I'm on Lucid and this is affecting me as well.
Installing the nvidia drivers removes xorg and ubuntu-desktop amongs
others and leaves the system at the command line after a restart

I have no clue what that did but it did the trick!

I'm stuck at 1024x768 at the moment but driver manager says it is in
use.

After upgrading to 2.6.24-19-generic the nvidia.ko module is no longer
added and therefore ubuntu boots into safe graphics mode. The previous
kernel: 2.6.24-18 still boots up fine with the nvidia module inserted.
Because the module isn't there there is no way to

I reconfigured xorg, added the Driver nvidia line and I still get the
same.
Remember, the previous kernel used the same xorg.conf previously and it
still boots fine.

slight problem with that in that 2.6.24-3 was the last kernel where it
didn't hang at Loading hardware drivers when I boot.
As a consequence it is the only kernel I can use at the moment. I
suppose i should check the bugs for that first.
