Sorry for the lengthy delay. Re-installing libc6 libglib2.0-0 and libmono did the trick. What in these three packages was bad, I have no idea. My guess is that something got b0rked due to hard reboots, due to X locking up occasionally, thus the filesystem wound up with some oddities. So should
