[Bug 1376154] Re: data grid not displaying resultset is blank

2014-12-01 Thread dvid seaward
@Nuno - By utopic update do you mean a normal system update, or
enabling utopic-proposed?

It sounds like you did the former, but if you want the fix **right
now**, you need to do the latter. Instructions for this are at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed ... if they are unclear,
you might get help here or at https://askubuntu.com (and maybe someone
can improve the instructions?)

Once a number of people have tested on utopic-proposed and found that
it works, the fix will appear in a normal system update. But, you have
to wait for the testing process to be completed before this happens.
(No-one wants a bug fix that doesn't work or introduces another bug.)

While bugs are frustrating, I hope you can see why the wait is
neccessary and that no-one here is demanding anything of you. My guess
is that most of the people commenting on this thread are users like you
and I, and the rest are developers and maintainers who are also keen to
get the bug fixed. We are all in this together.

Confirmed for me too (results appear, other basic functions continue
working as expected). Thanks! :)

@Rocko afaik once an Ubuntu release is made, packages are not updated,
but critical bugfixes (like this one) are backported - you can expect
the new version to be included in Ubuntu 15.04

Alternatively, 14.10 is better at picking up a previously existing issue
:D

(More seriously, though, I recall Apport sometimes providing a hide
further instances of this error option. I wonder why it doesn't come up
in this case?)

@albertomilone In this case is there any kind of debug package we can
install to provide more detailed error reports? Or does that not really
apply to Makefiles?

The 2.x line has security issues only resolved in 2.1.1. Precise and
earlier have much older versions (1.23.1) - I don't think these need to
be updated, afaik 1.x is a substantially different codebase - but
maintainer would know better than me.

[Bug 1354386] [NEW] Software Updater fails to lauch apt-listchanges

2014-08-08 Thread dvid seaward
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

* Install apt-listchanges and configure
* Run Software Updater (or wait for automatic run)
* If there are no changes, no error occurs
* If there are changes, accept them
* Wait for download

What should happen:

* Once download is complete, apt-listchange output should appear (possibly
asking for confirmation)
* Then installation of changes should continue

What happens instead:

* Once download is complete, error occurs when apt-listchange is called
* Installation continues successfully

Notes:

* My apt-listchanges config does *not* include asking for confirmation
* This works if I do an update from the command line using apt (apt-listchanges
behaves as expected)
* Will post error message when problem recurs (next time I have a download)

[Bug 1276186] Re: System becomes unresponsive, ibus-ui-daemon takes ~150 % cpu

2014-07-03 Thread dvid seaward
Based on http://askubuntu.com/a/490326/7146 I determined that I don't
need ibus-daemon, since I don't use multilingual input. I disabled it by
switching System Setting Language to none rather than ibus, and then
restarting. Since then I have not suffered from slowdowns in the middle
of application use. (Of course, this is not a suitable workaround for
anyone who needs multilingual input.)

However, I still encounter a slowdown/hang on minimising/closing
windows, as reported here

workaround there, but that workaround doesn't fix this issue).

Improvements:

 * Closing or minimising the last window has improved. The window
usually disappears, however the global menu remains. Bringing up a
hidden launcher in this situation sometimes fails.

Remaining problems:

 * Bringing up the Dash still fails most of the time.

Additional info: I had an issue with the cursor flickering that was
solved by disabling a mysterious extra display on my (Optimus) system.

[Bug 1314587] Re: Windows slow/stall/freeze when minimizing/restoring/etc in Unity 7 14.04

2014-05-19 Thread dvid seaward
This issue seems to have improved, I presume with package updates since
it was first reported. Animations are generally no longer jerky. Soft
and hard reboot are generally no longer required. Keyboard Shortcuts
appear/disappear smoothly. Remaining problems:

 * Opening the Dash almost never works. Certainly not the first time or
after having other windows have been open for a while. It behaves almost
as though we have switch to the Dash pane, but it hasn't been rendered.
As a workaround, if I open Dash then trigger Guake, Dash appears (with
Guake behind it).

 * Closing or minimising windows generally works, except for the last
window. Closing or minimising the last window fails completely, or
starts the minimise animation but then halts. Either way, despite the
window remaining visible, it is no longer clickable.

[Bug 702748] Re: Liferea does not appear in Messaging Menu

2014-05-15 Thread dvid seaward
Comment from upstream:

This will be solved by removing the trayicon support and replacing it with an
optional plugin that supports only GNOME classic. The user will have to
manually enable it. Additionally the hiding to tray icon will be removed as
this causes heavy problems with GNOME shell.

Fix (removal) will be released with 1.11.0

2014-05-09 Thread dvid seaward
This was working for me in 13.10 with the Ubuntu Handbook PPA version.
It is no longer working in 14.04 with the main repo version or the
Ubuntu Handbook PPA version.

** Description changed:

Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal

  What i expect to happen:
When i start Liferea i expect to see the icon in the message tray (system
tray) area.

  What happens:
Liferea starts, and the message tray flickers a bit (most likely trying to
add the icon) but then nothing gets added.
If when i start liferea from terminal the only output is set zoom: 1.00

[Bug 1314587] [NEW] Windows slow/stall/freeze when minimizing/restoring/etc in Unity 7 14.04

2014-04-30 Thread dvid seaward
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

 * Minimize current window or alt-tab between windows
 * Reveal launcher to click on application
 * Click `Super` to bring up Dash
 * Hold `Super` to bring up Keyboard Shortcuts

What should happen:

Action completes smoothly and quickly.

What happens instead:

 * Action may be slow / animation jerky.
 * Action may stall (animation frozen on given frame, e.g. window partially
minimized) - initiating another action cancels first action and second action
may succeed (most often calling Guake with F12 seems to solve the issue)
 * Action may freeze - cursor no longer moves - a soft reboot
(Alt+PrtScr+REISUB) usually works, otherwise a hard reboot

Notes:

 * Not application specific. Minimizing is reliably slow/stalls with minimizing
Firefox (including 29, I do not have a lot of bookmarks) or Pidgin, but I use
those programs more often.
 * I am using an Nvidia Optimus machine with the default Nouveau driver - no
`nvidia-prime`, no Bumblebee. I temporarily installed the latest stable Nvidia
driver (including `nvidia-prime`) and it made no difference.
 * I did not experience this issue on the same machine running 13.10 (with
Bumblebee).
 * I am running Maximus.

[Bug 1314126] [NEW] Ubuntu logo from login screen remains visible on desktop after login

2014-04-29 Thread dvid seaward
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

 * Log in to Ubuntu (Unity) session from login screen

What should happen:

 * On login screen: desktop background appears as background, dots are
overlayed, Ubuntu logo is overlayed
 * Once logged in: desktop background appears as background, no dots, no Ubuntu

What happens instead:

 * Once logged in: desktop background appears, Ubuntu logo is overlayed

Further notes:

 * I disabled the dots on the login screen, so I'm not sure if they appear, I'm
pretty sure not
 * I am pretty sure that the logo was appearing on the desktop from when I
first installed 14.04, it has remained after changing the background and
disabling the dots

@Stéphane - I'm also not sure how to proceed. Would it be valid to: get
the new package on my system, use Startup Disk Creator to create an
ISO/USB installer, test with that installer (either on my live machine

[Bug 947107] Re: No partition labels in the resize widgets

2014-01-24 Thread dvid seaward
Unfortunately I do not get a side-by-side option on the machines I have
access to (laptop already dual-booting, and VM is acting up :P ), so I
can't confirm this on my side.

One query: in the screenshots I have seen so far, the existing partition
is always fully labelled (Ubuntu 13.10) but to-be-installed partition
is always called just Ubuntu (rather than Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS). Is
this intential?

Not sure if this bug is the same as wanting only a single cursor to

[Bug 1055952] Re: Direct data leaking to Amazon

2012-12-10 Thread dvid seaward
Would it be possible to use Tor (or some other anonymising protocol) to
send and receive each request? (Whether the request is to Canonical,
Amazon or some other vendor.)

This way individual requests may be identifiable (IP address for sale of
item X occurred shortly after anonymous query for X), but sequential
requests would not be identifiable (cannot identify that anonymous query
X and anonymous query Y were in fact from the same IP address, unless
they happen to both result in sales).

I believe this would also address some of the concerns raised in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-lens-
shopping/+bug/1073114

[Bug 1086351] [NEW] ValueError: Unable to parse section data on SourceGear package diffmerge

2012-12-04 Thread dvid seaward
Public bug reported:

...

This error occurs whenever I check for software updates (through the
Update Manager), but I think the command line output is more useful
(below). It appears to be caused by the description of a non-Ubuntu
package diffmerge, which is not installed (the description is included
in the traceback below). The package comes from the stable SourceGear
deb repository deb http://debian.sourcegear.com/ubuntu precise main
(see http://www.veracity-scm.com/help/ubuntu_install.html for details).

Is there a formatting issue in the package description? If not, update-
apt-xapian-index should not be failing.

Please let me know if I can provide any further details.

[Bug 1021274] [NEW] Second massive file is not burnt to DVD - never added to project

2012-07-05 Thread dvid seaward
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

 * Running Ubuntu 12.04, brasero 3.4.1-0ubuntu1, nautilus 1:3.4.2-0ubuntu3
 * Insert blank DVD
 * Open blank DVD in Nautilus
 * Drag two files each 2GiB into DVD window
 * Click Write to Disc
 * Receive query about one file 2GiB
 * Select Always Add Such A File to go ahead with third version of ISO9660
 * Select Burn

What should happen?

Two files are burnt to DVD.

What happens instead?

Only one file is burnt to DVD.

Notes

Reproduced this using Brasero interface. Dragged two massive files into
empty Brasero data project at the same time. Received query about one
file, selected Always Add Such A File. Only queried file was added.
Could add second file by dragging it manually.

Workaround

Use Brasero interface and add massive files one-by-one.

[Bug 997488] [NEW] Clicking active Launcher icon does not initiate window picker in 1x1 workspaces

2012-05-10 Thread dvid seaward
Public bug reported:

I am using 12.04, I recently received an update to Unity 5.12-0ubuntu1.
Before that, this issue did not occur. My workspaces are set to 1
horizontal and 1 vertical.

When I click on the Launcher icon of an active application with multiple
windows, the window picker does not appear. This occurs with multiple
applications.

If I change my workspaces to 2x2, clicking the activate icon does
trigger the window picker correctly.

Is there any additional information I can provide?

[Bug 741562] Re: Upgrade rabbitvcs to version 0.14+

2012-04-17 Thread dvid seaward
Please consider a feature freeze exception. Version 0.15 contains
important new features since the version currently in Ubuntu, namely Git
support in addition to SVN support, and bug fixes. More importantly, it
includes support for Gnome 3 Nautilus (the old version only support
Gnome 2).

The upstream PPA contains all of these features, and (as far as I am
aware) all of the files required for this request.

[Bug 952719] [NEW] Ubuntu 12.04 LTS repo contains old version of RabbitVCS

2012-03-11 Thread dvid seaward
Public bug reported:

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Beta 1 (Precise Pangolin)
2. Open Software Centre or Synaptic
3. Search for RabbitVCS

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expected to see latest versions, including rabbitvcs-nautilus3. Instead
old versions (0.13.1-2) appear, and rabbitvcs-nautilus3 is missing.

Workaround: install from PPA.

p.s. RabbitVCS doesn't appear when typing RabbitVCS into the
applications lens. Perhaps RabbitVCS Nautilus 3 should appear here?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/947107/+attachment/2828475/+files/2-partition-sizing.png

** Description changed:

I clicked through the 12.04 LTS Beta 1 installation wizard and selected
Install 12.04 LTS alongside 11.10. I am presented with a simple slider
to manage the partitions for the existing and new version of Ubuntu.
However, the only labels present on the partitions are the sizes (approx
- 120GB and 60GB). Which one is for 12.04 and which for 11.10?
+ 240GB and 60GB). Which one is for 12.04 and which for 11.10?

I would suggest adding labels either for the partition names
(/dev/sda1, /dev/sda2) or (preferably) for the OS that is/is going
to be installed on the partition (Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu 12.04). The
latter would obviously be preferred because I wouldn't neccesarily know
what the former means. (btw, I'm assuming my existing installation would
stay on the existing partition, /dev/sda1?)

At the moment I can't continue past this step knowing what is going to
happen, which means I don't really want to! :)

I will add a screenshot asap.

However, the only labels present on the partitions are the sizes (approx
120GB and 60GB).

[Bug 763688] Re: [915GM] S-video output doesn't work in Natty (i386)

2011-11-21 Thread dvid seaward
I'm now using Ubuntu 11.10 and the issue does not occur with kernel
3.0.0-12 or 3.0.0-13. I resolved it in Ubuntu 11.04 by installing a
mainline kernel (approx 3.1), which I've since disabled in favor of the
kernel released with 11.10.

[Bug 763688] Re: [915GM] S-video output doesn't work in Natty (i386)

2011-07-14 Thread dvid seaward
I got a kernel update this morning. It has *partially* fixed the
problem. If I plug my machine into the TV via S-Video an image now
appears. However, every 2 minutes (approx) the TV screen (but not the
laptop monitor) flashes blue (it displays blue if there is no signal or
the laptop is not plugged in).

The updates were for Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.38 on
x86/x86_64. Packages linux-headers-2.6.38-10-generic and friends were
added.

[Bug 575877] Re: gnome-keyring mysteriously asks for keyring password on startup

2011-02-03 Thread dvid seaward
I think there needs to be more clarification about this bug.

1. For some people it occurs when they log in with a password - this is
clearly wrong. (Could it be that your account password and keyring
password don't match?) This is in the original bug report.

2. For others it occurs when they auto-login. Arguments about security
aside, they don't want it. This is my issue, and I think warrants a
separate ticket.

3. Keyring steals focus. I think this is a feature, which wouldn't be
annoying if 1 2 weren't happening. Warrants a separate ticket if you
disagree.

4. Keyring only says an application. There is an existing ticket for
this issue at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
keyring/+bug/246185 After lots of searching I got clarification from a

[Bug 708573] [NEW] USB headset mic not picked when I plug headset in

2011-01-27 Thread dvid seaward
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Whenever I plugged in my old audio jack headset, sound was immediately
diverted from my speakers to the headset speakers, and the microphone
was immediately available.

When I plug in my new USB headset, I have to open Sound Preferences and
switch both input to the headset. (Output is selected automatically, but
I'm not sure if the first time it wasn't.)

Aparrently this is a bug, not a configuration problem on my side. This may be a
duplicate of or related to the following bugs - but none of these bugs
described my specific issue (USB headset mic is not automatically picked):

[Bug 392066] Re: hamster-applet doesn't show anything at panel

2010-11-17 Thread dvid seaward
I reported this at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=635052 and
