[Bug 1832812] Re: Locking and unlocking the screen is slow and stuttery

2020-08-11 Thread dan the person
A thousand thank yous.

Disabling 'desktop icons' from the extensions app fixes this for me.

Once disabled, even just the action of clicking on the toggle in the
extensions app has the same effect, the desktop becomes unresponsive
(though the mouse moves) for about 30 seconds, then finally the toggle
redraws to show the extension is enabled.

Totally repeatable, with them enabled, unlock takes forever, with them
disabled, unlock is instant.

This is 20.04
The 'Ubuntu Dock' extension is still enabled.

[Bug 1880723] Re: gnome-shell high CPU usage on Ubuntu 20.04

2020-07-16 Thread dan the person
I'm seeing something very similar.
Did a fresh install of 20.04 a week ago.

After being logged in half a day things really start slowing down.
Alt+Tab takes a few seconds to pop up, then you tab through to e.g. an
open Calculator instance and that takes 8 seconds to come to the
foreground. gnone-shell using 50% of one CPU.

Have tried your suggestions to no avail.

attaching the logs requested. journalctl shows a tone of javascript errors
e.g.
JS ERROR: TypeError: null has no properties

[Bug 1886414] Re: chromium wont install

2020-07-06 Thread dan the person
ok thanks that worked a treat.

Running snap directly there was a progress indicator so i could see that
snap downloads are very very very slow. 200kb/s. I'm on a a basic
residential 100Mbits fibre line, so apt downloading deps from the ubuntu
mirror is usually quick, 10MB/s. So the snap download is 50x slower than
what i am used to.

So download 50x slower than usual, and no progress indicator, made me
think it was hung when i probably should have just waited half an hour.

Normal download speed from apt upgrade straight after the snap install:

The following packages will be upgraded:
  libnss3 snapd
2 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 28.4 MB of archives.
After this operation, 15.2 MB of additional disk space will be used.

[Bug 1283938] Re: [Samsung NP535U4X-S01TH] Ubuntu 14.04 blank screen after wakeup from sleep

2014-07-18 Thread dan the person
Updating my graphics driver from catalyst 14.4 (14.10) to 14.6 beta
(14.20) fixed the resume from sleep issue.

Version numbers are a bit confusing, the ATI branded version number on
the download is 14.6, but the driver itself once installed reports
itself as 14.20

2014-07-15 Thread dan the person
Same here Ubuntu 14.04. Acer Aspire One 722 with AMD C-60 APU.

screen does not come back after sleep. Backlight comes on but blank
screen. Alt+f1 to console works. From there restart lightdm and all is
good. PITFA to have to restart after every sleep. Kinda defeats the
point of 'sleep' when you loose all your work.

Using fglrx driver.

You should test on a test machine. Promoting changes to production

[Bug 773979] Re: legacy applications (using system tray) do not work in unity without a porting effort

2011-12-29 Thread dan the person
Totally breaks the user experience for many applications. An icon that
behaves inconsistently is better than an application running in the
background with no UI and no explanation to the user why it has
apparently failed to start.

It also seems like ubuntu is going down it's own parallel world here.

If there is a need for this, why isn't freedesktop.org running with it?
Seems application developers now have to choose or support both the
standard way of doing things, and also the ubuntu way. Embrace and
extend
