- from a cold boot (or any other starting condition)
- connect and power up external usb drive with encrypted LUKS volume in first
partition
- use GUI or command line to unlock and mount volume
- use the volume for backup
- umount the encrypted volume

I installed this kernel 2.6.38-13 so I could purge the updated kernel,
and the same error reports.
I am going to try apt-get purge nvidia-common to see what happens.

This occurred to me after
1 dist upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04
2 apt-get clean
3 apt-get autoclean
4 some other cleanup involving booting up with a rescue CD, (and, critically,
cleaning the /tmp directory) in order to tar up the image for future deployment
in the field (20 laptops).

been resolved.
