What is interestin is that thunderbird seems to trigger this (e.g. when i shut down thunderbird everything comes ot normal, so let me know if you need to know the size of my thunderbird databases) more info on this comment https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/721896/comments/39 When this is happening, the free -m outout looks liek this: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3920 3822 97 0 0 344 -/+ buffers/cache: 3477 442 Swap: 0 0 0 Enabling 1Gb swap seems to solve this issue but i did not manage to full the swap, but if important i can try to do this. This happens pretty often on my system too (4Gb ram dual core, SSD) especially when running some java application together with thunderbird. [Bug 727903] Re: XDnD directly to a window in the spread fails
I updated to Precise and the drag and drop still sucks... The current way of handling it is unproductive. I agree that the current behavior when dropping to icon opens a NEW app instance with the dropped file loaded, is useful too, but this is not the purpose of the drag and drop. Because the app instance can be opened by simply doubleclicking the file (if from nautilus). The real problem now is that it should only raise windows, so the user can select to which windows to drop the file, and even in which place! Ideally i see it working like this: 1. Dropping to an icon opens a new instance with the file loaded. 2. Hovering over an icon exposes all app windows then user has the possibility to hover over needed window, and after that window is raised. In case the application has one single window - it is raised automatically. 3. Now the user can select where to drop the file. (e.g. in Thunderbird he can drop it in attachment field, or in the body directly which is different, same for nautilus with 2 panes open, user can drop the file to the right pane) 4. A hot key must exist, which if pressed while dragging a file will clear all mime type restrictions :) 5. When doing 2, the 1 should still work. Is there any chance these are done in ubuntu? if i get some free time and produce patches what are the chances these are accepted? Weird thing about unity is that the idea is great but realization is disappointing (this is not the only bug which affects productivity, there are others too). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/727903 Title: XDnD directly to a window in the spread fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/727903/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 862171] Re: Running instance of Libreoffice writer disappears from launcher, but keeps running
Hi, this bug affects me too. Here is how to reproduce it: uncheck keep in launcher for all libreoffice software (I really don't need them there all the time... ) Then go to some directory that contains some documents or spreadsheets and click them. On my machine (oneiric 32bit) this bug is reproduced 100% all the time. Note that if you use launcher to run the libreoffice directly, then its icon shows properly in dock and alt-tab works. Re: [Bug 178442] Re: Pulseaudio fails to initialize ICE17xx chipsets
I confirm this too on ubuntu maverick. I can live with the default.pa modified but the problem is worse: I use 2 sound cards the onboard one and the PCI ICE17xx chipset and their order is not stable. Sometimes it boots with the onboard one being hw:1 other time hw:0 so I have to always modify and restart pulseaudio according to the hw detection... this is really annoying, the worst is that it really worked fine 2 years ago... Thank you for the suggesiton, at least i have a sound now. however the problem with volume slider still remains. The volume slider behaves the same either in pulseaudio volume settings either in Rythmbox. As before, the problem is not see when using mpg123 or Totem. So may be it is a specific rythmbox issue? After some more experiments I noticed that volume control problem is caused by replay gain settings in Rhythmbox. After disabling replay gain - volume control is behaving normally. Re: [Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime
just installed ubuntu intrepid - and again HDD clicks are going crazy :( does anybody know if this is going to be fixed ? On Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 11:38 PM, foucault [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: 1) I use my laptop almost the entire time on battery power. I bought one of this small, long-lasting Netbooks, which you can take everywhere and which you will not often use with power cable attached: an EeePC 1000H. 2) With Windows XP, i don't hear any clicks. There seem to be no load cycles while the laptop is on. 3) With default Intrepid, the head is parked every few seconds, far too much. I just can't see, how this should enhance battery power. I changed that to the save Windows XP behavior. 4) If Ubuntu could park the head and leave it there for some time, everything would be fine. Unfortunately, there is just too much disk access rendering the head parking thing entirely useless and destroying the hard disk. 5) If Ubuntu uses the hard disk that differently from Windows XP, and puts my hard disk at risk, I call it a bug. Intentionally implementing is even worse. I also found out, that while -B 191 parks the head roughly as often as -B 128, -B 192 doesn't park it at all. 6) Conclusion: fix this. As it seems, some hard disks work entirely different on this matter as others. The only way to fix this bug ist therefore the openSUSE way: Use a Blacklist that knows, how to handle specific disks and apart from that use safe values. Safe values as in: Utilize the disk the same way Windows does, because that's what the manufacturer had in mind. -- High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/59695 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. You can scan through the bug for links to the Ubuntu forums where many, many different questions have been asked, answered, and re-answered. The temporary workaround is just below. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerManagement for an overview about what is involved and for a remedy. Following is a summary of the issue: It is confirmed that some systems are seeing an unusually high number of load/unload cycles on their hard disks, as evidenced by smartctl. It was originally surmised that this was related to laptop-mode being enabled, but this especially affects systems where laptop-mode is disabled. In fact, aggressive APM is not a bad idea while a system is not on AC, as that system is much more likely to encounter a physical impact. This is due to disk APM settings that let the heads park or disk spin down after an idle period that is shorter than the regular disk access patterns of the OS. Then, the heads are only parked for a very short period of time and almost imediately loaded again. Making impact protection much ineffective and wearing out the drive. It can happen when the disk asumes aggressive APM settings (like many laptop disks) and the OS does not take care to set the APM settings accordingly to its current disk access pattern. This problem has been confirmed in Ubuntu as well as in other distributions and on MacOS X and Windows. Symptoms of this bug are: * Frequent HD clicks -- more than one per 3 minutes while idle, louder than the typical access sounds. Often more than twice per minute. On some disks, the click is very quiet * Rapidly Increasing Load_Cycle_Count as displayed in the final number in sudo smartctl -a /dev/hda | grep Load_Cycle_Count (where /dev/hda is replaced with your own hard disk device) * Early hard disk failure never stay parked, due to very frequent disk activity. Thus this cycle occurs often, thus wearing out the drive, and any comparative benefit is negligible (whereas, if the-- some disks are cut down to less than a year of actual uptime. The problem is only present due to the existence of *all four* of the following factors: * Hardware is set (default or otherwise) to aggressive power management, causing heads to park. (default behaviour of many drives and often the only user available type of power management) * Disk is touched often, causing heads to unpark. (default behaviour of many distributions) * Drives are spec'd to a limited
[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime
Interesting! Setting ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true really helps, but not after start. On my ACER Extensa 5210 it helps after I unplug and plug back the AC cord. So just after the start (if laptop started on AC) it is just as before, but if you unplug the AC cord - the power management is beeing set to 1 (which is acceotble for running on battery) if you plug back the AC cord, APM is switched off. Just checked my ACER Extensa 5210, I bought it 3 months ago (laptop run mostly on AC power) Load_Cycle_Count 68629 Power_On_Hours 707 Seems like I have 97 cycles/hour - it seems too much for me, anyway I use thunderbird to check my email every 3 minutes, but it is still strange to have 97 cycles per hour.
