[Bug 1386005] Re: Password not accepted graphical boot for encrypted root system

2017-08-08 Thread dimovnike
This is still present in zesty :( what makes it worse is that nouveau
crashes my computer from time to time.

Also text boot is not as good. I have 2 partitions with the same
password and graphical boot asks for password only once. With text boot
i have to enter the password twice.

is there at least a way to make it ask the password once in
text/nosplash mode?

[Bug 1641380] Re: chromium-browser: ERR_CERTIFICATE_TRANSPARENCY_REQUIRED for Symantec certs

This is madness. A lot of sites are cut, like amazon, and others. I
tried the version 55 from staging but it doesn't work properly yet
(sites like amazon and youtube and up in "aw snap!"). Anyone knows when
to expect a fix?

[Bug 858188] Re: 168c:002b [Asus K52JT] Network manager fails to reconnect after suspend/resume

2013-11-12 Thread dimovnike
This happens on a desktop systems too, for example here:
ubuntu 13.10

uname -a
Linux nick-desktop 3.11.0-13-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 23 07:38:26 UTC
2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

lspci | grep -i ethern
00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82566DC-2 Gigabit Network
Connection (rev 02)

after resume, network manager comes with network disabled and if you
enable it, nothing happens. However doing dhclient eth0 setup the
interface properly.

Also: issuing sudo killall NetworkManager - brought back its
functionality, so that may be used as a workaround for now.

it doesnt matter how slow is computer as mentioned in the bug
description. Its happening on simple pages (e.g. on this one) on i7
with 8gb ram and SSD so the PC slowness is not an issue. It looks like
the touchpad is sending scroll events even after you lift the fingers up

kbits, according to iptraf. Is there a way to increase the pulseaudi
default buffering? May be there is a way to setup default lafency
required from such connections?

[Bug 1185172] Re: kswapd0 high CPU usage and lagging system

2013-05-30 Thread dimovnike
the prolem is gone in linux-
image-3.10.0-031000rc3-generic_3.10.0-031000rc3.201305261935_amd64.deb !
Also the system has a faster feel (and some of the apps as thunderbird
and android emulator seem to move faster)

Is it possible to get this kernel in raring via the usual update one
day? (because now there were some DKMS erros which ignored for the time
of this test) or is it possible to enable a PPA which will maintain this
mainline kernel up to date?

forgot to mention that the test was done with swap off. Also right
before the test I confirmed that the bug is still prezent with the
stable raring kernel (that the system becomes unresponsive and almost
hangs, u can barely move the mouse). After the new kernel was installed
and reboot, the problem is gone.

[Bug 1185172] [NEW] kswapd0 high CPU usage and lagging system

2013-05-28 Thread dimovnike
Public bug reported:

Hi,
when the RAM is about to be full the kswapd0 process starts using very much CPU
like 80-100%, and the system is unusable because of a severe lagging. What is
interestin is that thunderbird seems to trigger this (e.g. when i shut down
thunderbird everything comes ot normal, so let me know if you need to know the
size of my thunderbird databases) more info on this comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/721896/comments/39

When this is happening, the free -m outout looks liek this:

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3920 3822 97 0 0 344
-/+ buffers/cache: 3477 442
Swap: 0 0 0

Enabling 1Gb swap seems to solve this issue but i did not manage to full
the swap, but if important i can try to do this.

[Bug 721896] Re: kswapd0 100% cpu usage

2013-05-27 Thread dimovnike
This happens pretty often on my system too (4Gb ram dual core, SSD)
especially when running some java application together with thunderbird.
(Anyway thunderbird slowness is another story..) but for example now i
have the android emulator and android studio and as soon as I run
thunderbird - the system goes very slow and barelyt responding to
keypresses/mouse even the switching to VT1 works very slow. The top
shows kswapd0 cpu usage to be 85-100% and the free ram is this:

 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 3920 3822 97 0 0344
-/+ buffers/cache: 3477442
Swap:0 0 0

and this, is on raring! i remember this was happening on quantal and
precise too ... please, if you need any tests done, let me know as this
bugs renders this OS unusable for programming work. I am able to provide
any logs u need.

[Bug 727903] Re: XDnD directly to a window in the spread fails

2012-05-15 Thread dimovnike
I updated to Precise and the drag and drop still sucks... The current
way of handling it is unproductive. I agree that the current behavior
when dropping to icon opens a NEW app instance with the dropped file
loaded, is useful too, but this is not the purpose of the drag and drop.
Because the app instance can be opened by simply doubleclicking the file
(if from nautilus).

The real problem now is that it should only raise windows, so the user
can select to which windows to drop the file, and even in which place!

Ideally i see it working like this:
1. Dropping to an icon opens a new instance with the file loaded.
2. Hovering over an icon exposes all app windows then user has the possibility
to hover over needed window, and after that window is raised. In case the
application has one single window - it is raised automatically.
3. Now the user can select where to drop the file. (e.g. in Thunderbird he can
drop it in attachment field, or in the body directly which is different, same
for nautilus with 2 panes open, user can drop the file to the right pane)
4. A hot key must exist, which if pressed while dragging a file will clear all
mime type restrictions :)
5. When doing 2, the 1 should still work.

Is there any chance these are done in ubuntu? if i get some free time
and produce patches what are the chances these are accepted? Weird thing
about unity is that the idea is great but realization is disappointing
(this is not the only bug which affects productivity, there are others
too).

[Bug 665388] Re: [maverick] pulseaudio-module-bluetooth hangs pulseaudio when connect a bluetooth headset

2011-11-30 Thread dimovnike
Still present in Oneiric. I have a fresh installed system with no major
tweaks and no pulseaudio/bluez tweaks at all. The headset i am trying to
connect is Motorola Motorokr HD9. I also use BT apple magic mouse via
the same BT dongle.

Just to mention: This setup worked some time ago, about 2 ubuntu
versions ago, then I bought a dedicated dongle for the headset, but now
I have a single dongle again.

If devs need me some special tests to do - I am open.

[Bug 873167] Re: Cannot drag emails between Thunderbird windows [regression]

2011-11-29 Thread dimovnike
Yes this is really annoying and as far as I remember this worked in
11.04. And it seems to be not only the thunderbird affected. It also
affects nautilus, i.e. it doesn't raise all nautilus windows so I can
choose where to drop the file but instead, when i release the mouse
button it opens a new nautilus window but doesn't drop the file there.

[Bug 862171] Re: Running instance of Libreoffice writer disappears from launcher, but keeps running

2011-10-24 Thread dimovnike
Hi, this bug affects me too. Here is how to reproduce it: uncheck keep
in launcher for all libreoffice software (I really don't need them
there all the time... ) Then go to some directory that contains some
documents or spreadsheets and click them. On my machine (oneiric 32bit)
this bug is reproduced 100% all the time. Note that if you use launcher
to run the libreoffice directly, then its icon shows properly in dock
and alt-tab works. I had the same bug for pidgin, and I solved it by
adding an icon in unity dock. And yes, the bug is pretty annoying...

One more thing: Even if the icon is not show in dock and alt-tab doesnt
work properly, the Expose (Super-W) still shows all windows, so you can
use this until the bug is fixed.

Mistake: this Then go to some directory that contains some documents or

contains some documents or spreadsheets and open them. because the
method is not important e.g. you can doubleclick them or press enter,
whatever..

And BTW: Unity really rocks! I waited for something like this for
years...

Thank you for the hint with unity --replace. I think the the status of

very complicated as meta key, the most people are used to, doesn't work.

[Bug 766729] [NEW] Focus capture problem in embedded videos

2011-04-19 Thread dimovnike
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Hi, a very annoying problem is happening on pages with embedded videos. Once
the video is clicked (played) the keyboard simply stops working (until another
non-video area on the page is clicked). I can not neither refresh or close page
with F5 or ctrl-w or any other hotkey. I can not even change the tabs using the
keyboard. it is really annoying because sometimes yotube videos do not start
from the first try, and the page needs to be refreshed, but the refresh can be
done only using the keyboard. Is there a solution for this? And btw chrome is
just ok with this (but i can not switch to chrome due to the amazing sync
feature in FF)
Thank you.

Re: [Bug 178442] Re: Pulseaudio fails to initialize ICE17xx chipsets

2010-10-28 Thread dimovnike
I confirm this too on ubuntu maverick. I can live with the default.pa
modified but the problem is worse: I use 2 sound cards the onboard one
and the PCI ICE17xx chipset and their order is not stable. Sometimes it
boots with the onboard one being hw:1 other time hw:0 so I have to
always modify and restart pulseaudio according to the hw detection...
this is really annoying, the worst is that it really worked fine 2 years
ago...

On 10/28/2010 07:31 PM, John Patrick wrote:
I can confirm that I'm still getting this on upgrade to 10.10 today (and
that manually modifying /etc/pulse/default.pa as suggested in this
thread still works OK for me - at least for output - I've not tested
input yet). I just wondered if there was a chance of upping the priority
of this one though? I obviously realise you folks can't do everything at
once but it's been a minor but repeated frustration for a number of
releases and seems a shame to leave outstanding when you've got most
other stuff so well sorted out of the box.

2009-10-10 Thread dimovnike
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to karmik beda: (Release:9.10)

Alsa works OK, i.e. aplay -Dplug:hw:1 works. The secondary card is

connecting to bluetooth headset blocks pulseaudio daemon. Nother
problems are detected with the primary on-board card - the volume
becomes impossible to set up. I.e. After setting it up to a certain
level it returns itself. Also when rythmbox changes from one track to

The ice1712 issue is well-known and depends on a fix landing in
alsa-lib (that will not be in Karmic without sufficient testing,
which, at this point, is fairly unlikely).

Thank you for the suggesiton, at least i have a sound now. however the
problem with volume slider still remains. The volume slider behaves the
same either in pulseaudio volume settings either in Rythmbox. As before,
the problem is not see when using mpg123 or Totem. So may be it is a
specific rythmbox issue? Also any ideeas how to fix bt headset issue?
A simple power on of the headset block pulseaudio daemon for about 1 minute.

Please see the PulseAudio Trac ticket for the front:0 definition, or
you can modify /etc/pulse/default.pa (or ~/.pulse/default.pa) with the
 appropriate channelmap.

After some more experiments I noticed that volume control problem is
caused by replay gain settings in Rhythmbox. After disabling replay gain
- volume control is behaving normally.

just installed ubuntu intrepid - and again HDD clicks are going crazy :(
does anybody know if this is going to be fixed ?

 2) With Windows XP, i don't hear any clicks. There seem to be no load
cycles while the laptop is on.
 3) With default Intrepid, the head is parked every few seconds, far too
much. I just can't see, how this should enhance battery power. I changed
that to the save Windows XP behavior.
 4) If Ubuntu could park the head and leave it there for some time,
everything would be fine. Unfortunately, there is just too much disk access
rendering the head parking thing entirely useless and destroying the hard
 disk.
 5) If Ubuntu uses the hard disk that differently from Windows XP, and puts
my hard disk at risk, I call it a bug. Intentionally implementing is even
worse. I also found out, that while -B 191 parks the head roughly as often
 as -B 128, -B 192 doesn't park it at all.
 6) Conclusion: fix this. As it seems, some hard disks work entirely
different on this matter as others. The only way to fix this bug ist
therefore the openSUSE way: Use a Blacklist that knows, how to handle
specific disks and apart from that use safe values. Safe values as in:
Utilize the disk the same way Windows does, because that's what the
 manufacturer had in mind.

 temporary workaround is just below.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerManagement for an overview about what is
 involved and for a remedy.

Following is a summary of the issue:
It is confirmed that some systems are seeing an unusually high number of
load/unload cycles on their hard disks, as evidenced by smartctl.

It was originally surmised that this was related to laptop-mode being
enabled, but this especially affects systems where laptop-mode is disabled.
In fact, aggressive APM is not a bad idea while a system is not on AC, as
that system is much more likely to encounter a physical impact.

This is due to disk APM settings that let the heads park or disk spin down
after an idle period that is shorter than the regular disk access patterns
 of the OS.

Then, the heads are only parked for a very short period of time and almost
imediately loaded again. Making impact protection much ineffective and
 wearing out the drive.

It can happen when the disk asumes aggressive APM settings (like many
laptop disks) and the OS does not take care to set the APM settings
accordingly to its current disk access pattern.

This problem has been confirmed in Ubuntu as well as in other distributions
and on MacOS X and Windows.

 Symptoms of this bug are:
 * Frequent HD clicks -- more than one per 3 minutes while idle, louder
than the typical access sounds. Often more than twice per minute. On some
disks, the click is very quiet
 * Rapidly Increasing Load_Cycle_Count as displayed in the final number in
 sudo smartctl -a /dev/hda | grep Load_Cycle_Count (where /dev/hda is
replaced with your own hard disk device)
 * Early hard disk failure never stay parked, due to very frequent disk
activity. Thus this cycle occurs often, thus wearing out the drive, and any
comparative benefit is negligible (whereas, if the-- some disks are cut down
to less than a year of actual uptime.

The problem is only present due to the existence of *all four* of the
 following factors:
 * Hardware is set (default or otherwise) to aggressive power management,
causing heads to park. (default behaviour of many drives and often the only
user available type of power management)
 * Disk is touched often, causing heads to unpark. (default behaviour of
 many distributions)
 * Drives are spec'd to a limited

2008-06-16 Thread dimovnike
Interesting! Setting ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true really helps, but not after
start. On my ACER Extensa 5210 it helps after I unplug and plug back the
AC cord. So just after the start (if laptop started on AC) it is just as
before, but if you unplug the AC cord - the power management is beeing
set to 1 (which is acceotble for running on battery) if you plug back
the AC cord, APM is switched off. I;m going to write a startup script
which changes APM settings on startup...

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-06-10 Thread dimovnike
Just checked my ACER Extensa 5210, I bought it 3 months ago (laptop run mostly
on AC power)
Load_Cycle_Count 68629
Power_On_Hours 707
Seems like I have 97 cycles/hour - it seems too much for me, anyway I use
thunderbird to check my email every 3 minutes, but it is still strange to have
97 cycles per hour. Now I disabled APM using hdparm and cycles stopped
increasing. Really strange that developers don't care about such an important
bug...

I am also concerned about the cooler, it turns on every minute for 30
seconds then stops, this happens even if laptop is totally idle. Any
ideas? Is it normal?
