RE: [Bug 393989] Re: Nautilus - Deleting files on USB hangs - Moving to trash zooms
Just tried the same computer Lucid. It is still an issue. I deleted large numbers of files > 8gb on a usb - still very slow but no longer infinitely hangs. Even so I'm unable to multitask while deletion in progress. Cpu and drives both pegged at 100%. Moving same usb files to trash significantly faster and I'm able to continue to multitask. The process of deleting slows and in some cases completely stops other processes that were running before the deletion event. I'd worry about this on a production server - esp since I actively use large usb towers on each machine. This is probably not frequently noticed in the community because deleting is not a default option so few people use it. Deleting few, small files is not a problem. -Original Message- From: boun...@canonical.com [mailto:boun...@canonical.com] On Behalf Of Jeremy Foshee Sent: Sunday, March 14, 2010 12:39 AM To: mich...@alft.net Subject: [Bug 393989] Re: Nautilus - Deleting files on USB hangs - Moving to trash zooms Hi ebeneezer, This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux 393989 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. [This is an automated message. [Bug 393989] [NEW] Nautilus - Deleting files on USB hangs - Moving to trash zooms
Public bug reported: I'm sure this is a previous reported bug but didn't see it. Kindly redirect. I had 25,500 files in two folders on a usb drive that I wanted to delete. They were all old backup files. Instead of "Move to Trash", I used Nautilus and with a right-click selected "Delete". After 5 minutes it deleted about 500 files and was continuing to progress at that speed. Painfully slow! I cancelled and moved the two folders containing 25,000 files to the trash. Zoom! Then I emptied the trash. Zoom again! Less than 30 seconds later all was done. What's going on with the delete function in Nautilus?
