Hmm, after swapping out the hard drive a TOSHIBA_MK2555GSX for a WDC_WD2500BEVS I was able to succesfully install Grub! Hmm, I've found that gdm will just sit there after I've swiped my fingerprint until I press carriage return. Before this update I had everything working fine, e.g. enter username swipe finger and gnome would load, no need for carriage return.
