[Bug 1135288] [NEW] Upgrade deleted my /opt symlink

2013-02-27 Thread edA-qa
Public bug reported:

I believe one of the Adobe upgrade packages caused my /opt directory
to be unlinked. Usually I symlink this directory to a path on another
partition /opt = /home/opt, something I've done since Ubuntu 8
series. After doing an upgrade today that link was lost and in its
place was a new /opt with contents /opt/Adobe/Reader9. So I assume
it is acroread which broke it.

I'm using Kubuntu 12.04 with the Muon update manager, but I suspect it
isn't related to those components.

I've attached a screenshot showing the other packages updated at the
same time.

[Bug 1033172] [NEW] libzip2 i386 and amd64 can't be installed

2012-08-05 Thread edA-qa
Public bug reported:

There is a dependency issue while installing packages with multi-arch.
If I attempt to install libzip2:i386 it says it must remove libzip2
(the amd64 version). I proceed. If I then wish to install the amd64
version it says it must remove the i386 version.

I've tried both apt-get and synaptic, both have the same issue.

This is Kubuntu 12.04 with all recent updates.

[Bug 674386] [NEW] audio playback device HDA Intel (HDA Generic) does not work (lenovo T410i)

2010-11-12 Thread edA-qa
Public bug reported:

On KDE startup I get the notice audio playback device HDA Intel (HDA
Generic) does not work. Indeed sound doesn't work. If I go to System
Settings | Multimedia and test the HDA Intel (HDA Generic) device it
works fine -- and then sounds work again until I reboot.

I assumed at first this came from upgrading the kernel from 2.6.32-24 to
-25, but booting back into the old kernel shows the audio is also broken
there now. Something else in the upgrade perhaps broke this: my
original install of Kubuntu worked fine, that's what I'd like to stress.

[Bug 673657] Re: kernel 2.6.32-25 audio failure / glib warning Lenovo T410i

2010-11-12 Thread edA-qa
I was able to get the old kernel to work again by doing this:
  update-initramfs -u -k 2.5.32-24
Booting there I realized the sound still didn't work correctly. This is likely
a separate issue, bug #674386

Issue with splash screen/boot hang of course remains.

[Bug 673657] [NEW] kernel 2.6.32-25 audio failure / glib warning Lenovo T410i

2010-11-10 Thread edA-qa
Public bug reported:

kernel 2.6.32-24 worked fine on the Lenovo T410i laptop. Upgrading to 25
introduced this two problems:
1. audio no longer works, Phonon reports at KDE startup that HDA Intel (HDA
Generic) does not work
2. boot shows the Glib-Warning: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user (a
common problem it appears)
2a. with the splash option the boot process hangs
2b. without the splash option the boot continues (still with problem #1)

To repeat, sound worked failure free previously and I can only think the
kernel upgrade caused the problem. I am unable to test the old kernel
again. Selecting it form the grub menu leaves me in an initramfs boot,
somehow the old kernel has been lost, or is broken during the upgrade.

[Bug 197057] Re: cannot boot 2.6.22-14 with Athlon 64, hangs/stops

2008-03-12 Thread edA-qa
I tried Alpha 6 and the 64-bit live CD boots, well, not quite.

If I accept the default options the screen goes blank and the booting
process stops (I waited just to be sure, and it really has stopped, no
activity, no progress).

If I modify the boot options to remove the splash and quiet options
the live CD boots into Gnome without a problem.

I should note that if I boot with the Splash screen with the Mepis kernel it
boots correctly, but the X display has a few odd artefacts -- which I suspect
is either a bug in the radeon driver, or in the card itself (simply switching
to a console and switching back fixes it). I mention this since perhaps it is
related to the splash crashing the boot process in this new Ubuntu CD.

2008-03-01 Thread edA-qa
Curiously the Mepis kernels work just fine on my machine, without
needing any additional flags. I tried the Mepis 2.6.22 32-bit and
64-bit kernel (currently running on 64-bit).

I am still quite happy to try options with the Ubuntu kernels to help
fix this defect though I might need to do it with a Live CD, or a boot
disc.

[Bug 197057] [NEW] cannot boot 2.6.22-14 with Athlon 64, hangs/stops

2008-02-29 Thread edA-qa
Public bug reported:

My machine hangs during the boot process for kernel 2.6.22-14-generic.
I have an Ahtlon 64 and it runs fine with kernel 2.6.15-26-386.

So far I have attempted all the following to no avail:
-switched from 386 to generic, seemed to help a bit
-recreated images initramfs -u -k all / update_grub
-removed potentially troublesome initrules (86-pcmia)
-disabling several USB devices
-acpi=false had no impact, but
-acpi_use_timer_override got my system to a BusyBox prompt eventually, but no
further

I am unable to boot at all in that kernel, so the attached logs are for
the 2.6.15-26-386 boot (otherwise the system is the same).

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=gutsy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 7.10

I have no /proc/version_signature

I recently followed the upgrade path 6.05 = 6.10 = 7.04 = 7.10. The
only unfinished package is cupsys due to apparmor not intiailizing,
which is of course due to the new kernel not loading which has the
apparmor patch.

If somebody could tell me how to get cupsys running without apparmor I'd
also be happy with that as a workaround for now.

[Bug 197057] Re: cannot boot 2.6.22-14 with Athlon 64, hangs/stops

2008-02-29 Thread edA-qa
Further trying with acpi=off I saw some more errors before the
initramfs/busybox prompt appears.

The SATA detection/negotation is taking a very long time, at (FDC 0 is
apost-1991)... faile dto recover some devices... just before the prompt
I see ALERT: /dev/sda1 does not exist which is what root is set to.

Booting a few more times and writing quickly I find ata problems:
  failed to set xfermode (err_mask_0x40)
  ata1.00: disabled

So the problem is somehow this kernel image doesn't want to recognize my
SATA drives, and thus can't boot any further. Anything else I can
check?

I tried with option irqpoll and got further -- the disks were detected
and boot continued, but this time it just stopped after the USB
detection part.

[Bug 64241] can't create mcop directory / unable to play sound as another user

2006-10-05 Thread edA-qa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

In the scenario where I use su to become a different user in KDE and then run
mplayer to play a sound file (ogg in this case), I get the error:
   can't create mcop directory

If I manually add the directory beforehand /tmp/ksocket-username then
mplayer works*.

This bug may be actually a sound system bug and related to #55973, and
possibly #42169. Though the scenario in which it appears is different.
I additionally suspect it would apply to more than just mplayer (for
instance Flash also has no sound unless I fix this, but I can't get
error messages anywhere).

(*Note: I actually also need to give universal read/write to /dev/dsp to
get this working in this scenario as well)
