[Bug 1914110] Re: Update very old RNBC packages

2021-02-01 Thread ethanay
I submitted a report upstream via reportbug -B debian

In the mean time rncbc has been nice enough to include binaries for
debian based systems.

** Description changed:

current versions of RNCBC packages are very outdated. Example:
rtirq-init is stuck at the 2015 version and there have been very significant
updates to this software, which is critical for all audio workstation users
(e.g. Ubuntu Studio).

- RNCBC maintains updated versions here:
+ RNCBC maintains updated .deb binaries here:
  https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:rncbc
  https://launchpad.net/~rncbc

Is it possible to get these into the repositories? This could be an
upstream issue if Ubuntu depends on taking whatever version Debian has
  already packaged...

Re: [Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) with LibreOffice is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04 (see comment 93)

2020-05-27 Thread ethanay
I wonder if there are residual components of the problem that go away when
you upgrade against or do a fresh install? I never tested 3.36.2 against my
original 19.10 install, I just went to 20.04 when the fix was released.

So, for example, maybe if I had installed 3.36.2 while running my original
19.10 install and config, I would be seeing problems still. Just a thought!

2020-05-20 Thread ethanay
Tim, I don't know, I am just "another user"

But I appreciate you testing! For me, the pattern has always been quite
consistent for the first cut/copy to fail, and so is fairly easy for me to
test.

The different symptoms are curious, with it being very predictable for some
and random for others!

It is also interesting to me that the problem appears only in copying to
clipboard from some programs but not others.

Lastly, it is interesting that it was fixed first in some programs (eg for
me, LO calc) before others (LO Writer).

I don't know enough about how different sources for clipboard data interact
with the clipboard manager, but it leads me to believe there is actually
more than one clipboard bug. If so, it will take users being vigilant to
collect log and other debug info as they try to reproduce the more
intermittent symptoms, and submit in a different report.

Also I don't understand how the comments implying that this problem
isn't being given "high enough priority" are a. valid (as in true; in my
experience this bug is getting a lot of attention, and the main thing
holding back the release of the fix right now is *user testing* e.g.,
from the people complaining?) and b. helpful to resolving the bug.

Version: 3.36.1-3ubuntu3

This is the default install configuration for Pop!_OS. Under this
configuration, the bug is no longer reproduceable in LibreOffice Calc,
but is consistently present in LibreOffice Writer.

I am installing --proposed updates and will reboot and retest.

2020-04-28 Thread ethanay
Copy Q does nothing to fix the issue for me. It exists with or without any
clipboard manager or extension on my Pop!_OS 19.10 install.

Fortunately for my workflow I do as much work as possible in programs not
affected by the bug such as gedit and zim and I believe focuswriter.

Much thanks to the people working to squash this bug! And apologies to real
life bugs for the violent analogy!

the bug persists on my system with or without any clipboard manager or
extension installed. And others have reported the behavior in default
installs. so I feel a bit skeptical that a clipboard manager or extension
is implicated.

Re: [Bug 1852183]

2020-04-27 Thread ethanay
But you are not a consumer, and this is free (libre) open-source software,
not something you bought. It is something you participate in. "Won't fix"
doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't going to participate in or assist
a solution, it means that the ultimate responsibility lies with the
upstream maintainer of the package.

In your analogy, toyota would pass the info (and offer support to) the
company that makes the defective part. Either that company comes through or
they end up needimg to select a different part (or package) from a
different company. It is a process that requires patience and good faith
coordination.

There are good reasons for this. Not just to avoid duplication of effort,
but also to avoid unnecessarily creating confusion, fragmentation, new
problems or even messing up the upstream efforts to solve the issue.

So from a fellow FLOSS end user (who unfortunately has few skills to offer
except bug reporting), I feel that your attitude is far more interesting to
examen.

Toward an open source world,

Ethan

[Bug 1518408] Re: Interrupt audio on bluetooth headset when wifi is on

I have symptoms of this same problem in Pop!_OS 19.10.

Bluetooth audio connections stutter, skip or disconnect entirely during
moderate to heavy wifi use.

However, my problem involves Intel 9650 Wifi/BT adapter not a Broadcom

issue.

Re: [Bug 1852183]

2020-03-30 Thread ethanay
This bug occurs in Pop!_OS 19.10 for me with or without a clipboard manager
installed.

In addition, when I do have a clipboard manager installed, it occurs BEFORE
any clipboard manager i tried receives any information about what I tried
to copy or paste, so seems inaccurate to me that blaming a clipboard
manager will get to the root issue.

[Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10

2019-11-12 Thread ethanay
I can only reproduce this bug in LibreOffice Calc (spreadsheet). I
cannot reproduce it in Writer or Geary.

But it is a consistent problem for me in Calc.

Here are the symptoms/process:
1. First new copy invariably fails to copy text, instead copies/stores a bitmap
image.
2. If I "cut" instead of "copy" then I have to use the "undo" function to
restore the text so I can attempt again.
3. Undoing my paste/cut operations consistently causes LibreOffice to crash.
4. Second attempt at cut/copy invariably succeeds.

I will try to grab a crash report as it seems specifically related to
this bug.

I noticed this immediately upon upgrading from 19.04 to 19.10, all with
latest stock kernel/software/updates. IE, using the standard versions in
the repositories.

The behavior from this bug has the potential to cause data loss: When
LibreOffice crashes before "undo" can restore the cut text, whatever
chunk of data that was intended to be cut gets completely discarded and
does not get recovered with the rest of the document, probably because
it was stored in a buffer somewhere separate from the actual document
data itself.

So all in all this bug converts text into image and then deletes the
data altogether.

[Bug 1833322] [NEW] Consider removing irqbalance from default install on desktop images

2019-06-18 Thread ethanay
Public bug reported:

as per https://github.com/pop-os/default-settings/issues/60

Distribution (run cat /etc/os-release):

$ cat /etc/os-release
NAME="Pop!_OS"
VERSION="19.04"

BUG_REPORT_URL="https://github.com/pop-os/pop/issues;
PRIVACY_POLICY_URL="https://system76.com/privacy;

UBUNTU_CODENAME=disco

Related Application and/or Package Version (run apt policy $PACKAGE
NAME):

$ apt policy irqbalance
irqbalance:
Installed: 1.5.0-3ubuntu1
Candidate: 1.5.0-3ubuntu1
Version table:

$ apt rdepends irqbalance
irqbalance
Reverse Depends:
Recommends: ubuntu-standard
gce-compute-image-packages

Issue/Bug Description:

as per konkor/cpufreq#48 and http://konkor.github.io/cpufreq/faq
/#irqbalance-detected

irqbalance is technically not needed on desktop systems (supposedly it
is mainly for servers), and may actually reduce performance and power
savings. It appears to provide benefits only to server environments that
have relatively-constant loading. If it is truly a server-oriented
package, then it shouldn't be installed by default on a desktop/laptop
system and shouldn't be included in desktop OS images.

Steps to reproduce (if you know):

This is potentially an issue with all default installs.

Expected behavior:

n/a

Other Notes:

I can safely remove it via "sudo apt purge irqbalance" without any
apparent adverse side-effects. If someone is running a situation where
they need it, then they always have the option of installing it from the
repositories.

Re: [Bug 1804744] Re: Restoring from new location does not find backup files

2019-01-06 Thread ethanay
Eero I filed the original report. To me your comment seems only critical
and not helpful, especially in a report where a fix is being released. If
someone uses the same location for backup this problem doesn't appear to
exist.

I try to file bug reports as I encounter them, along with any workaround,
as a way of being helpful and contributing to something I believe in, they
are not always fixed but if you have an urgent issue that needs attention
you have plenty of options. Have you discussed on Ubuntu forums? filed a
separate report(s) for issues you face? posted a bounty? Use/purchase a
different program? Developing software takes money and/or time. It is
unfair as well as unhelpful to stand back and complain without contributing
either money or time to support. Asking people to work for free for the
most part is unreasonable. People deserve compensation for their work for
food, clothing, shelter, etc.

Apart from this interface bug the backup process has been fast and reliable
for me. I have relied on it on several occasions, and have yet to find a
program with the same power, reliability, flexibility and ease of use.

I use primarily Elementary OS which includes no backup software by default.
I don't like its default music player but that change to a preferred
software takes me less than a minute.

If you don't like deja dup an up-to-date forum post exploring/testing
preferred alternatives or outlining your specific unmet needs is more
helpful and potentially more constructive.

[Bug 1793256] [NEW] gnome-contacts failed to find primary personastore

2018-09-19 Thread ethanay
Public bug reported:

Gnome Contacts freezes for a moment during startup. When I start
contacts via terminal, I get the following message:

(gnome-contacts:22862): folks-WARNING **: 15:41:16.720: Failed to find primary
PersonaStore with type ID 'eds' and ID
'f011fc492aced318ea4fd3536397095a23fe7712'.
Individuals will not be linked properly and creating new links between Personas
will not work.
The configured primary PersonaStore's backend may not be installed. If you are
unsure, check with your distribution.

I cannot add or edit contacts. Gnome Contacts does not provide any
information why. I suspect this underlies the similar misbehavior of
Gnome Calendar and Gnome Tasks (see bug 1792668)

If this is a configuration issue, it should be resolvable upon install
of the application, by presenting actionable information that makes
sense to the user.

I am renaming all "evolution" folders in ~.config ~.cache and
~.local/share to see if that fixes the behavior.

[Bug 1792668] Re: gnome-calendar fails to sync, update, or cache

2018-09-16 Thread ethanay
Experiencing similar issues/behavior in other gnome office apps:
contacts and todo list.

Contacts has actually given a useful error when trying to edit a google
contact, but the error message disappears very quickly and cannot be
copied or pasted. Attached is a screenshot.

This is all occurring on a fresh install. All I did was install the
software, link my google accounts, and try to run the apps. For some
reason, they are not self-configuring with the google accounts
correctly.

[Bug 1792668] Re: gnome-calendar fails to sync, update, or cache

2018-09-15 Thread ethanay
1. Renamed "calendar" folder under ~/.cache/evolution, and also the
~/.config/evolution and .local/share/evolution folders
2. rebooted. Then I
3. de-activated and re-activated "calendar" under each separate online account.
4. then I restarted Calendar app.

This appears to have fixed many of the issues described above. But has
also produced a crash every time I modify a setting. These should be
automatically reported as bugs.

[Bug 1792668] Re: gnome-calendar fails to sync, update, or cache

2018-09-15 Thread ethanay
** Description changed:

Not sure if this is three different bugs or three symptoms of the same
problem, but I am observing three different problematic behaviors on a
fresh 18.04.1 install with latest updates:

  1. Failure to sync: I have all my online google accounts active, but the
calendar does not seem to grab new events from the online database. Nor
- does it transmit new events to the online database.
+ does it transmit new events to the online database. Nor does it do any
+ of these things when manually selecting the "synchronize" option under
+ the menu.

  2. Failure to update: I cannot manually add new events to the calendar.
Although the app appears fully interactive, none of my interactions
(e.g., adding an event) seem to actually get entered into the calendar,
  even locally.

  3. Failure to cache: I have many local calendars displayed that the
calendar app has appeared to pick up from other applications' data. I
try to manually remove them by opening the calendars display, clicking
on the calendar and clicking "remove." This appears to remove the
calendar from this menu, but it doesn't remove it from being
displayable. When I close and re-open the application, the local
calendars have reappeared. Also, I cannot permanently rename calendars.
When I close the app and re-open it, the calendar name has reverted to
  its original state.

This might be related in part to another issue, where I have my
UbuntuOne account active, but still get prompted regularly for my
username and password from various programs.

2016-01-22 Thread ethanay
It did not exist in 12.04. IIRC, the graphical artifacts symptomatic of
the issue for me appeared during an upgrade in Elementary OS Freya (based
on Ubuntu 14.04) from kernel 3.13 to 3.19 -- an upgrade intended to fix
another kernel bug! :P

I get no random suspend issues. The possibility exists for hardware
problems. I had to bypass my hardware wireless switch because it started
randomly turning the card on and off. Maybe something similar is happening
via a suspend parameter on your computer (did you try registering and
logging hardware keypresses? Those showed up with my wireless issue)

This bug seems fairly well confirmed as a software/kernel/driver issue,
though. Let me know if there's somewhere I can make noise and verify that
this is a problem.

[Bug 1390625] Re: mouse cursor gets corrupted

2015-09-05 Thread ethanay
I experience this problem running Freya on an intel graphics stack.
However, I use the Scratch text editor a lot. It is configured to "hide
the cursor while typing." If I type a little bit in the text editor to
hide the cursor, the next time I move the cursor, it reappears as
normal.

So consider that a workaround and better option than rebooting!

2015-08-31 Thread ethanay
adding "acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=linux" to grub boot options:
a. fully fixes this problem in a Dell Inspiron 1545 running 14.04 (all
behavior normal and as expected, including indicator popups for brightness
adjustment)
b. partially fixes the problem in a Dell Inspiron 1440 running 12.04 (full
access to all brightness levels via dedicated buttons, indicator pops up
but does not visually exhibit a brightness level change)

Re: [Bug 207473] Re: Screen brightness double level changes on Dell laptops

2015-08-31 Thread ethanay
The Fedora fix seems much more elegant and less invasive by simply finding
and eliminating a software keymapping duplicate of hardware/bios activated
keys, if it's the same issue! Maybe it's part of the fix, because the
Inspiron 1545 running 14.04 already has those changes in its
/lib/udev/hwdb.d/60-keyboard.hwdb

# Dell Inspiron 1520
keyboard:dmi:bvn*:bvr*:bd*:svnDell*:pnInspiron*1520:pvr*
KEYBOARD_KEY_85=unknown # Brightness Down, also emitted by acpi-video,
ignore
KEYBOARD_KEY_86=unknown # Brightness Up, also emitted by acpi-video,
ignore

although perhaps we need to generalize this to more Dells and activate it
via the computer model identifier referenced in the Fedora bug?

Re: [Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2015-08-29 Thread ethanay
For me, it's that the OS leaves insane hardware mfr defaults of hdparm
-B=128 in place even on AC power. I believe this was fixed in 12.04 but is
back for some reason in 14.04 for me... Installing TLP changes to B=254 on
AC and retains the B=128 on battery (with the addition of clustering hdd
writes to help prevent excessive disk activity and thus load/unload
cycles), so provides essentially the same fix with added benefits of actual
power saving on battery

This is not a support forum. Please do not use it as such (even though
it has been used as such already).

You can scan through the bug for links to the Ubuntu forums where
many, many different questions have been asked, answered, and re-
answered. The temporary workaround is just below.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerManagement for an overview about what
is involved and for a remedy.

SRU justification: current behavior may lead to premature disk failure
in laptops due to excessive unnecessary drive parking. Fix will
disable disk cycling by default when on AC power, by correcting an
error in the hdparm logic of acpi-support.

For jaunty, this issue is addressed in acpi-support 0.115.

   TEST CASE:

   1. With acpi-support 0.109 (hardy) or 0.114 (intrepid) installed and
laptop-mode *not* enabled in either /etc/default/laptop-mode or
/etc/default/acpi-support, monitor the load cycle count of your hard drive
by running 'sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda|grep Load_Cycle_Count' over an
interval of several minutes, and observe that it is incrementing. (If it
does not increment, your hard drive's manufacturer defaults are sane and
you are not affected by this problem.)
   2. install acpi-support from hardy-proposed or intrepid-proposed
   3. while connected to AC power, monitor 'sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda|grep
Load_Cycle_Count' again to confirm that the number is no longer incrementing
   4. (assuming that the system is a laptop:) disconnect the system from AC
power, and confirm that the number is incrementing again
   5. enable laptop mode by setting ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true in
/etc/default/laptop-mode and running 'sudo /etc/init.d/laptop-mode restart'
   6. reconnect the system to AC power and confirm that the
 Load_Cycle_Count stops incrementing.
   7. suspend and resume the system and confirm that the Load_Cycle_Count
 is still not incrementing.

   REGRESSION POTENTIAL:

As this patch causes hdparm -B 128 and hdparm -B 254 to be invoked
automatically on systems where it was not being run before, there is
some risk that this change will have a measurable impact on the disk
throughput, power consumption, and temperature of some hard drives.
Nevertheless, it is believed that these APM power settings are the
sensible default settings for the vast majority of hard drives and
that the current behavior poses a significant risk to the longevity of
hard drives used in a wide range of laptop models, so this update
should only be blocked if it results in confirmed hardware damage that
can be expected to apply to a similar range of configurations.

[Bug 1296504] Re: iwl3945 wireless connection becomes unreliable

2015-07-14 Thread ethanay
Ok, I swapped out my old Intel 3945abg card with a new intel 5300bgn
wifi card. Reliability seems to have increased, but problem still
occurs. See attached for dmesg output of dropout with new wifi card
installed, including two instances of wireless disabled by hardware
switch.

It leads me to believe that the problem was at least partially
hardware...

I will test the new mainline kernel and report back...

** Attachment added: dmesg output with recurrence after hardware swap

not sure, it happened several months after the upgrade if I remember
correctly, but seems regressive. I ordered a replacement wifi card to rule
out hardware issue, will update when that arrives and I can test.

Is it possible to run diagnostics to rule out faulty hardware? This is

failing? I don't have access to a replacement card.

I will test the upstream kernel and report back...

[Bug 1296504] Re: iwl3945 wireless connection becomes unreliable

2015-03-12 Thread ethanay
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Dell XPS m1330 with Intel Wireless ABG

  uname -a: Linux ethan-XPS-M1330 3.2.0-60-lowlatency-pae #62-Ubuntu SMP
  PREEMPT Tue Feb 25 00:32:18 UTC 2014 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

what I expect: wireless connectivity to be reliable and consistent
what happens instead: wireless connection cuts out, recovers, re-establishes
connection. sometimes (rare) requires disabling / re-enabling via hardware or
software switch. sometimes (more rare) hardware fails completely until reboot
(removing and re-inserting module fails -- hardware disappears to the system
until reboot). This problem will occur without a suspend / resume cycle.

This problem appeared recently, within the last month or two months of
kernel updates. I think the next step in debugging would be to test
  reliability against previous kernel versions.

[Bug 1364077] [NEW] rhythmbox crashes when updating all feeds

2014-09-01 Thread ethanay
Public bug reported:

I have three podcast streams. Sometimes rhythmbox crashes on startup. I
believe this is tied to a specific crash that occurs consistently, here's dmesg
(several crashes in a row trying to update all streams):
[112404.531570] rhythmbox[23277]: segfault at c ip b72cec74 sp ad27fffc error 4

To reproduce it, I
1. Open rhythmbox (assuming it doesn't crash on startup)
2. Click on the podcasts menu item
3. Ensure htat all feeds is highlighted
4. click on the update button

Another interesting artifact: all open windows unable to obtain focus
after compiz respawn. Only able to interact via mouse. Must close and

[Bug 1315209] [NEW] Compiz freeze

2014-05-01 Thread ethanay
Public bug reported:

What I was doing while it happened: Taking a screenshot using default
application, alt + prnt scrn, of a libreoffice drawing.

Mouse responsive, system still functional. Able to switch to TTY 6 and
killall compiz, which then automatically respawned. Sometimes it
doesn't automatically respawn, at which point I need to restart the
system, which causes me to lose work.

Compiz freezes during other activities, but this is the first freeze
I've reported. I can't pin down a specific behavioral trigger, other
than it freezes very definitively upon user input (e.g., clicking a
button in a dialogue box, taking a screenshot, switching desktop
workspaces, etc).

This error message appeared after the killall, but it might just be a
reflection of the killall:

2014-03-28 Thread ethanay
Thanks, Seth. It clearly did cause loss of data, though, so I'm confused
about that part of your statement?
Something in the crash OR an automatic recovery process erased saved work

gedit crash erases all data in open files

Status in gedit package in Ubuntu:

What I expected to happen: Gedit crashed, and I expected to be able to
open my saved files and resume working after the crash
What happened instead: Gedit somehow overwrote the saved files with
blank data. One file's hidden backup was deleted in the process, somehow.
I was able to restore a recent version from the other file's hidden backup
 copy.

   More information:

I had two saved files open as tabs in a single gedit window. I
copied a paragraph from the first tab, and opened up a saved
LibreOffice Writer document. Upon trying to paste the paragraph data
I had copied from gedit into libreoffice writer, gedit crashed.
Ubuntu prompt asked me whether I wanted to restart gedit, and i
confirmed. Gedit reopened the saved files as completely blank
   documents.

I am checking the box for security vulnerability because it might be
something someone could exploit to force unauthorized loss of data.

[Bug 1296504] [NEW] iwl3945 wireless connection becomes unreliable

2014-03-23 Thread ethanay
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1047996] Re: USB startup disk creator crashes compiz

2013-12-29 Thread ethanay
Dell XPS m1330 w/Intel GM965 graphics on Ubuntu 32-bit w/latest updates
onto Patriot 4gb flash drives

This bug occurs consistently at two points during the process:

1. durign the start of the copy process
2. During the system policy requires authentification for installation of
bootloader prompt (where you need to enter your password to finish the process)

It's not a huge deal -- it seems to just cause compiz to crash. Here's
my dmesg from the time I plugged into the flash drive through the entire
process:

Ubuntu seems to recover more-or-less gracefully, and it doesn't *seem*
to affect the performance of the flash drive. If others can verify,
then it might make sense to leave it as-is or with a brief popup
window on startup that informs the user of the bug and that it is
largely a cosmetic issue.

[Bug 875543] Re: can't eject cd rom : Inappropriate ioctl for device

2013-04-08 Thread ethanay
Step #3 in comment 5 above works for me:
3. 'sudo eject -i off'

So it seems that the drives are locking after eject for some reason?
For me, this happens on Lubuntu 12.10. I can insert one CD and eject
it, but then the drive is unusable again until I issue the command
above.

It only happens with my DVD reader (/dev/sr0), not my DVD writer
(/dev/sr1). lshw taken after issuing the command above, both drives are
in fact empty.

[Bug 861171] Re: Shutdown from greeter does nothing when multiple accounts open

2012-11-08 Thread ethanay
why can't the greeter just say, X user(s) is/are still logged in.
Please log out of all accounts before attempting to shut down or
reboot. and ignore all the nastly permissions stuff??

If an admin really needs to shut down, it's easy enough to do via
terminal or tty. are there really daily use cases where a standard user
needs permission to shut down if other accounts are still logged in?

i think we should also consider whether those other accounts are most
likely to be guest sessions, anyways...

if you can help populate the blueprint? not sure what the whiteboard is or
how to get it started. work items we need to start compiling as soon as we
decide on the strategy. FYI, i am NOT a coder, so any implementation stuff
is faaar beyond me.

Possibly. But maybe drafting a blueprint, with a whiteboard and specific
work items, would be even better. The natural person to approve it would
be Robert Ancell, the author of lightdm.

A couple of years ago I filed bug #667089, and comment #3 in that bug
report lists a few other guest session related bugs.

for users without the time or ability to manually customize their
  guest sessions to behave well?

 Hey, the tarballs at
 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CustomizeGuestSession are really easy
to use. ;-) But seriously I agree that much of it - and probably other
stuff as well - should be there by default.

   Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I have a fresh installation of Hardy with the latest updates installed
on a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. The brightness settings (Fn+Up/Down)
work although they seem to skip a level each time.

'/proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/brightness' tells me that it supports
   brightness levels 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84 and 100. Without gnome-
power-manager running pressing Fn+Up will transition up into each
level and back down again smoothly.

When gnome-power-manager is running increasing the brightness from 12
I can only get levels 36, 60, 84 and 100. Decreasing the levels from
   100 I only get 72, 48, 24 and 12. Running gnome-power-manager with the
verbose option shows that when I press the brightness-up button once
it is recorded twice. I ran gnome-power-manager in a debugger thinking
it was a timing issue and it still happened.

I have included the output from pressing the brightness-up button
(Fn+Up) once below. This only happens when gnome-power-manager is
running and did not happen using Feisty. I have looked at the code and
I cannot see why the button event is triggered twice, I don't have any
experience of the code but if you can give me any ideas of where to
start I can try to look into this myself.

   Thanks!

 Title:
guest session user prompted for password on resume from suspend

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
   Incomplete

 Bug description:
   In 12.04 with latest updates.

   Steps to reproduce:
   1. start a guest session
   2. allow the computer to suspend after timeout
   3. resume the computer from suspend
   4. a password prompt prevents guest (or any) user from resuming session

As it stands, the user must press switch user at #4 above to go back
to the login screen and may then re-enter the guest session from
   there.

If the way that a guest session works is that it creates a temporary
random password every time, that password should automatically be
entered at step 4 above so the user never sees the password prompt,

OR the guest session should always be created with require my
password when waking from suspend unchecked.

OR, computer should resume at login screen indicating that a guest
user is already logged in (automatically run switch user command
   before suspend or after resume)?

this is a great resource, thank you! it is good to see some foundational
material already in existence, people recognizing at least on an initial
level that the default guest session is not sufficient.

would another bug report be appropriate for organizing sane guest session
defaults to be included in Ubuntu for users without the time or ability to
manually customize their guest sessions to behave well?

That tutorial addresses some of the things you mention.

I have played with the thought of modifying the lightdm package, making
some customization ideas the default for the guest session feature.

this does appear to be a duplicate, thanks! but part of a larger series of
bugs affecting sane defaults for guest session, e.g., web browser remember
password prompts are unnecessary, prompts to backup the computer are
unnecessary and misleading, etc. there are a few others but they escape my
memory at the moment.

all these problems appear to stem from guest account using /etc/skel to
form a temporary new user account, yes?whereas a guest account isn't
simply a temporary new account to be discarded on exit, it is a specialized
restricted account that should have certain settings completely disabled,
like screen lock and backup and automatic updates checking, etc.

while i like that guest accounts can be customized from the default using
/etc/skel/ i think there is another layer of customization that should be
off-limits as it would make no sense (e.g., enabling screen lock). i am
unfamiliar with the mechanics of current guest account creation, but maybe
someone could manually define the sane guest-session defaults, and then use
a script to derive any customizations that don't affect those sane defaults
from /etc/skel

thus, the system administrator would get their custom new user accounts,
but not at the expense of corrupting sane guest session defaults.

is this worth another bug report?

[Bug 868904] Re: Redshift fails to start with session due to geoclue failure

2012-10-01 Thread ethanay
The -l lat:lon is what I use and sufficient for me, but the workaround
is insufficient, though, from a design perspective. For example, both
my parents and my girlfriend just think the program is completely broken
if they try to use it while not connected to the internet.

Both Unity and Gnome allow setting your current location. Redshift
should probably do the following automatically by default unless given a
manual over-ride (such as using the -l lat:lon option):

1. Try to find current location using geoclue and internet connection
2. If #1 doesn't work, fall back to using Unity / Gnome location in the clock
applet
3. If #2 doesn't work, fall back to using last-known good startup location
4. If #3 doesn't work, prompt use to enter a location manually at least once
using the -l switch (so it can create a config file and fall back to #3 next
time)

to handle printing control through a lab monitor computer that doubles

This implementation will be much more volunteer and user friendly as it
will provide a dedicated print management interface that automatically
updates as new jobs appear.
