I can also confirm that this happens on my Dell Inspiron 4150 using Hardy. As far as I recall this issue has been around in every Ubuntu release I have used (from 5.04 that is). The graphics adapter is ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]. -- garbled or no video
