First there was an issue with hibernation: after resuming, the gnome
session was not restored and a new one was created (I had to login again
from start). Here are some relevant log lines:

[ 21.375254] PM: Image signature found, resuming

Then, since next restart I cannot login anymore, as the session keeps crashing
immediately after entering user's password.
The only way I could login back was by selecting the previous kernel version on
boot (5.3.0-26-generic instead of 5.3.0-29-generic).

I also noticed all gnome extensions (Applications Menu and Hibernate
Status Button ) stopped working and were disabled.

Boot journal attached.

[Bug 1835654] [NEW] Extracting a zip archieve creates a new unwanted folder

2019-07-07 Thread giacof
Public bug reported:

version of the package file-roller: 3.32.1-1 on Ubuntu 19.04

If I right click on the .zip file and choose "extract here" from the context
menu, then the archieve content is extracted into a newly created folder, with
the same name as the zip file.
The expected behavior would be extracting the content into the folder where the
archieve is located.

Note this does NOT occur for tar.xz archieves, which are correctly
extracted into the current folder instead.

[Bug 1791981] [NEW] X Server session crash for "No space left on device"

2018-09-11 Thread giacof
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Release: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Package version: xserver-xorg: 1:7.7+19ubuntu7.1

When my laptop resumes after suspend, the desktop session crashes and a new one
is started. So each time I lose all open applications and unsaved data!
The expected behavior would be obviously to restore the suspended session.

I had a look through log files and found that Xorg.0.log ends with the
following error lines:

[ 6004.019] (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "NULL"
[ 6004.026] (EE) modeset(G0): failed to set mode: No space left on device

[Bug 1780677] Re: X session crash after resuming from suspend

2018-07-11 Thread giacof
Hi, I did apply the workaround, yet I can't find anything related in the
/var/crash directory.
With my ID I only find a systemd crash on 2018-06-21 and other issues dated
back to 2017 and older.

Actually, this is the content of the /var/crash directory:

_usr_lib_virtualbox_VBoxHeadless.0.crash
_usr_lib_virtualbox_VBoxHeadless.0.upload

[Bug 1780677] [NEW] X session crash after resuming from suspend

2018-07-08 Thread giacof
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
Release:18.04

xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.7+19ubuntu7

First I suspended my laptop, while a few applications were running
(Firefox, Chrome and some others much smaller). A couple of hours later,
I opened the lid and expected the Gnome session would resume.

What happened instead was a crash of the X server, then the login page
was shown again and a new Gnome session started: the old session got
killed!

In the Xorg.0.log.old file I found this, not sure if related:

[ 21189.337] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Deleting GPU-0
[ 21189.338] (WW) xf86CloseConsole: KDSETMODE failed: Input/output error
[ 21189.338] (WW) xf86CloseConsole: VT_GETMODE failed: Input/output error
[ 21189.338] (WW) xf86CloseConsole: VT_ACTIVATE failed: Input/output error
[ 21189.338] (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

[Bug 1705345] [NEW] Installing new kernel hangs on plymouth --ping

2017-07-19 Thread giacof
Public bug reported:

I tried to upgrade linux kernel, from 4.10.0-26 to 4.10.0-28, but the
installation hangs on the following output lines:

sudo apt-get install unrar linux-generic linux-headers-generic

Then I used ps to see running processes on the console, and notice this
one was blocking post-installation:

I could not but manually kill plymouth, then the script resumed but then
froze again a few line later and so on, but is that safe for the

nor magic keys were working. I could not but switch power off.

[Bug 1626729] [NEW] Evolution keeps using wrong password instead of asking it again

2016-09-22 Thread giacof
Public bug reported:

I sent an email via SMTP and mistyped the password, so the server
rejected the message. Then I tried to send again the same message.

Expected behavior: a new dialog should have prompted for the correct
password.

What happened instead: Evolution did NOT ask the password again, but
tried to send the message reusing the wrong one! The following popup was
then displayed:

The reported error was "AUTH command failed: ...authentication rejected"

Below the message are three buttons, the last of which is "Retry", but
it keeps using the wrong password

I even tried to exit Evolution and restart it, but it was still
remembering the wrong password instead of asking it!

Package Version: 3.18.5.2
OS: Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.1 LTS

** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1511817] [NEW] bluetoothd consumes 100% CPU when scanning for devices, system hangs

2015-10-30 Thread giacof
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to use the bluedevil wizard on Kubuntu 15.04 to add a new device
(BT headset). The scan window opens but no device is found.
Meanwhile, both cpu and memory usage start to increase until memory is 100%
full and the system hangs!
If I just kill bluedevil, then dbus-daemon keeps using 100% cpu, the only way
to stop it is by manually stopping the bluetooth service.

[Bug 1434052] Re: kwallet wants to migrate empty kwallet4

2015-06-21 Thread giacof
I have installed the package libkf5wallet5:amd64 version
5.9.0-0ubuntu1.1 and this issue is NOT fixed to me.

As a consequence, I cannot connect to any encrypted Wifi network, as
Network Manager keeps asking for the password forever (the passwork is
100% correct as I chose it on my own network).

[Bug 1460731] [NEW] Cannot set proxy for Kmail

2015-06-01 Thread giacof
Public bug reported:

I'm using Kmail on Kubuntu 15.04:

uname -r

apt-cache policy kdepim

I tried to set a proxy for Kmail from the menu Settings - Configure Kmail...
and then selecting the Proxy tab.
I expected to find a form to enter proxy settings, but instead I read the
following errors:

Cannot find module

The diagnosis is:

[Bug 1318951] Re: kernel update fails with /boot on FAT32

I had the same issue with kernel 3.13.0-40.69.
I could successfully update the kernel by editing the configuration file
/etc/kernel-img.conf as follows:

do_symlinks = no

[Bug 1370725] Re: ksmserver crash on login on Kubuntu with Nvidia Quadro K1100M

2014-09-18 Thread giacof
I tried to restore the desktop environment by typing from a virtual
console:

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331 nvidia-prime

Since then, I'm able to login into lightdm only by booting in failsafe mode at
grub menu, but one odd thing is the lame nvidia-settings window shown in the
attached picture. Also, the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf is now missing.
I also tried to select the intel card with the command:

sudo prime-select intel

but then I get plenty of errors in kernel.log:

[Bug 1354711] [NEW] incoming call popup disappears after a few seconds

2014-08-09 Thread giacof
Public bug reported:

ekiga: 4.0.1-4 on Kubuntu 14.04.1 LTS

Whenever there is an incoming call, the popup window with the accept button
is shown for just a few seconds, then it disappears.
So if I fail to click the button within that short time, I can still hear the
ringing phone sound but there is no way to answer the call!

Expected behavior: the popup window should be displayed as long as the
phone is ringing

** Affects: ekiga (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Description changed:

- ekiga: 4.0.1-4 on Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
+ ekiga: 4.0.1-4 on Kubuntu 14.04.1 LTS

I confirm this bug on saucy.
Adding the /usr/sbin/tor Ux, line to AppArmor configuration does NOT fix the
issue to me.

[Bug 354650] [NEW] fail to run/install firewall

2009-04-03 Thread giacof
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kmyfirewall

I installed kmyfirewall version 1.1.1-2ubuntu1 on Kubuntu Jaunty beta
(KDE 4.2.2).

I used a saved configuration file (.kmfnet) which was working fine in Intrepid,
but as I tried to run or install the firewall, I got an ugly error dialog (see
attached screenshot).
From the console I also read the following error lines:

[Bug 330067] Re: X server crash while running Google Earth

2009-02-19 Thread giacof
Hi Jan,

I know the application did not come from any official Ubuntu repository,
and I certainly would have reported the issue to the Google Earth
support only, if I had experienced nothing more than a crash of Google
Earth itself.

Unfortunately, the final consequence was a X server failure, which
ultimately resulted in a system wide crash (system unresponsive and hard
restart needed), that sounds like a far more critical issue.

Actually, I have seen lots of errors in the Xorg.0.log.old and thought they
might imply a bug in Xorg or in the intel driver, which was someway triggered
by GE: that is why I reported the issue here, as well.
Do you think all those errors come only from a bug in Google Earth?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

[Bug 330067] [NEW] X server crash while running Google Earth

I am using Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10 with KDE 4.1.4 on a Compaq Presario

I installed the last version of Google Earth: 5.0.11337.1968 (beta). I
noticed several problems with it, such as flashing and texture errors.
After a while, the X server crashed and the system hung.

[Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad

2009-02-13 Thread giacof
Geir,

sorry for misunderstanding.. I actually tried it the way you suggest:

1. restart computer and select the Kubuntu partition
2. login as default user and wait for KDE complete startup
3. avoid touching the touchpad until switch to a different VT (by pressing
Ctrl+Alt+F1)
4. touch the touchpad

well, nothing happened... I could even get back to the KDE session and
this time the kernel panic did not occur! All worked fine, including
input devices!

So, it seems it happens only if I try to use the touchpad right after
logging into KDE. I'm getting a bit confused...

2009-02-12 Thread giacof
Hello, I recently experienced a different type of crash: no kernel panic this
time, but system hung. The atteched Xorg.0.log file reported the following
error:
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

I also found a strange connection: the bug ALWAYS occur when using the Windows
Vista partition on the same laptop, and then rebooting and logging into Kubuntu.
On the countrary, when I start again Kubuntu after a previous Kubuntu session,
everything works fine.

[Bug 312270] Re: [i965] Xorg lockup

2009-02-12 Thread giacof
Geir,

thank you for your care about it.
I think I messed up this bug report, as I finally realized it is about several
possibly unrelated issues: I apologize.

Actually, the originally reported lockup events has ceased after
deactivating NetworkManager on boot and manually setting up the network
after login. I have no idea whether the bug is in NetworkManager or in
Xorg, but at least there is a workaround.

Regarding the kernel panic, I submitted a new bug (Bug #321972), and
provided more detailed information pertaining this specific issue.

[Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad

2009-02-05 Thread giacof
Back to Intrepid, this time I had to reboot twice, as the first attempt
resulted in a failure in starting the X server with the vesa driver (see
attached Xorg.failsafe.log). The splash screen slowly faded and then
the monitor turned blank. No kernel panic occurred, though, and I could
restart by hitting [ctrl-alt-del].

I am eager to hear news about a possible fix or work around.
Thank you in advance.

[Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad

2009-01-30 Thread giacof
Hi again,

I made a test on Jaunty and there was no kernel panic. The touchpad worked fine
and no error was reported in the Xorg.0.log file.
The only two problems I encountered are on the Atheros madwifi driver (see
attached dmesg) and the Proxy authentication settings in Network preference.
Though I set the proxy user and password, I could not install/update anything
from Synaptic, due to http 407 errors.

Therefore, I could only test the Gnome environment, while it would be
more convenient to check if the bug may be related to KDE 4.

In any case, is there any work around for Intrepid? This issue is very
annoying: I always have to hard restart and select the recovery entry in
the grub menu.

[Bug 321972] Re: [i965] kernel panic after touching touchpad

2009-01-29 Thread giacof
Hi Leann,

enclose is a screenshot that is nearly identical to what I see, the only
difference being in the mouse cursor (missing in the attached picture).
Actually, I doubt that could be much helpful, as all works fine until I use the
touchpad: I can switch to any window by pressing Alt+Tab, issue any command
from the console, and even change virtual terminal by hitting Ctrl+Alt +Fn and
get back.
As I finally touch the touchpad, the desktop simply freezes with no change at
all in what I see, and the capslock led starts blinking. Thereafter, the system
is totally unresponsive and I have to manually switch the power off.

Regarding regression, the first time the kernel panic occurred I was
using the freshly released Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10, with kernel 2.6.27-7.
The same happened after any kernel upgrade up to 2.6.27-11. I have never
tried this laptop with any previous Ubuntu release.

I will soon give Jaunty a try and report here the results.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

[Bug 312270] Re: [i965] Xorg lockup

Today I had a kernel panic!!

I brought my laptop to my office, where we have a ethernet LAN, while at home I
only have a wireless network.
I could successfully login, KDE started and all was fine on the desktop, until
I inserted the cable into the ethernet port.
Then, as soon as I put my finger on the touchpad, the capslock key started
blinking and the system hung again.
File kern.log follows.

[Bug 286861] Re: AR5006EG/AR242x/AR2423 wireless not working

2009-01-09 Thread giacof
what is acp_pci? I have never heard of it. AFAIK, ath5k is the Open Source
alternative to ath_pci/ath_hal, and a new ath5k branch is now part of the
wireless-2.6 tree.
What I actually did was getting latest ath5k code by downloading
compat-wireless package from wireless.kernel.org
(http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download).
