Writing this from the kernel on the 14.04.1 ISO. Everything appears to
work great from here, too.

Keeping the 3.14.1 kernel because it has served me well all this time.

[Bug 1315073] Re: Fresh Ubuntu 64-bit install boots with no keyboard, mouse, or network

2014-05-10 Thread GonzO
I have installed the kernel in proposed. Typing from it now.
Everything seems fine.

What I'd like to know, though, is whether or not the Trusty ISO is going
to be updated with this new kernel. Fixing the bug post-installation is
usually fine, but in this particular case, people on this hardware would
have to chroot from the install image to do that -- not something
Ubuntu's target audience is likely to know to do, much less know *how*
to do.

Would it be possible to upload patched ISOs, so that one can at least
log into the install after a reboot?

[Bug 1315073] Re: Fresh Ubuntu 64-bit install boots with no keyboard, mouse, or network

2014-05-08 Thread GonzO
In response to Missing required logs: Single-user mode also has the
same problem. When presented with the menu of what to do, I can't do
anything because of an unresponsive keyboard.

Due to the nature of the problem, I have no way of knowing or finding
out whether or not the system is frozen, or I just don't have input and
networking.

As for the upstream kernel, I can try it out tonight and report back.

[Bug 1315073] [NEW] Fresh Ubuntu 64-bit install boots with no keyboard, mouse, or network

2014-05-01 Thread GonzO
Public bug reported:

Hardware: Cyberpower Z77 computer, including the following relevant
parts:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z77-HD3 Intel Z77 Chipset
Video Card: nVidia 760
Hard Drive: Samsung 128GB SSD, SATA3
Keyboard: Moshi Luna USB
Mouse: Razer USB gaming mouse

Try Ubuntu 14.04 without installing from USB key: No problems.
Install Ubuntu while in LiveCD environment: No problems (even browsed the web a
bit).

On reboot, Ubuntu boots to LightDM, and that's as far as I can go. The
keyboard doesn't respond, though I can successfully toggle F-Lock on and
off and the lights are on. The mouse doesn't respond, and I see no
cursor. There's a notification in the upper-right hand corner that
there are no connected networks. I can't SSH in to get any logs.

WORKAROUND: Boot from LiveUSB; mount and chroot into install; download
and install Generic 3.14.1 MainLine kernel and reboot; everything is
fine. But I don't think I have to tell anyone how not-ideal that is,
especially since chrooting these days involves three or four mount
--bind commands that are difficult for people to remember.

This has occurred on Ubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome spins. This does not occur
with Fedora 20 (the only other distro I've tried on this hardware).

[Bug 1169984] Re: 3.8.0-18 HDMI audio regression: Either oops or opening device fails with -ENODEV

2013-05-20 Thread GonzO
If we're doing takeaway analysis here:

The first problem is that about a week before release, the -18 kernel
was released. Rather than being a simple ABI bump like the last few
kernels were, it contained a *large* number of cherry-picked patches
that contained a wide array of changes.

No kernel with that amount of code churn should ever be introduced to a
distro base a week before release. And in my experience, that's a first
for Ubuntu.

The second problem is that THIS bug was decided as the one all of the
others became duplicates of.  It downplays the severity of the defect;
this isn't just about losing HDMI in all relevant control panels, it's
about *being completely unable to get to a working GUI* (at least for
people using binary blob drivers). And while I reported the defect as
being THAT severe, that severity was lost when it got linked to a
lesser-severity defect.

If you take a high-severity defect and make it a duplicate of a lower
severity one, the source defect should have its severity raised.

The third problem is that this was reported a week before release, but
the flawed kernel line was released anyway. When hardware isn't working
(at best) or the machine isn't able to boot to a GUI (at worst), a
release note IMO isn't an adequate response. Rolling back to the last
kernel that worked would have been simpler, and easier.

[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver

2013-05-08 Thread GonzO
Wait: why is this marked fix released? Problem exists on a fresh
install of 13.04.

I don't so much care about compiz not having the right refresh rate
OOTB, but changing it and having that setting forgotten after a reboot
is *maddening*. It shouldn't take to much to make sure two settings
(detect refresh rate, manual refresh rate entry) don't erase themselves
every boot, and I'd consider the problem fixed if this were the case.

But having to resort to a kluudge (bash script with sleep 5 in it?
Really?) isn't really... optimal.

[Bug 1169984] Re: 3.8.0-18 HDMI audio regression: Either oops or opening device fails with -ENODEV

2013-05-07 Thread GonzO
bwat47 is correct.

What's worse, is that this defect is FAR worse than this bug makes it
out to be. This isn't JUST a problem where people's sound cards don't
work; on systems where the nVidia binary driver is installed, this
defect makes Ubuntu *unusable*: Unity fails to load due to the chain of
events at play (broken HDMI driver - unable to load nVidia video driver
- unable to load Nouveau, which is blacklisted by the installation of
the nVidia binary driver - unable to load Vesa, because it relies on
the framebuffer driver, which is *also* blacklisted by Ubuntu's nVidia
packages).

But none of that gets mentioned when they mark the higher-intensity
defect reports as duplicates of this one.

2013-05-03 Thread GonzO
I SPOKE TOO SOON.

3.8.0-19.30 stopped working after a reboot.

On one of my other computers, it boots to lightdm (after a wait), but in
the wrong resolution. The HDMI driver is still broken here, and it
takes the nVidia driver with it.

Still using 3.9 mainline, which really works great. I wish Raring would
just move to that and give up the 3.8 kernel with its odd patches
altogether.

[Bug 1172333] [NEW] Kernel 3.8.0-19 does not boot

2013-04-24 Thread GonzO
Public bug reported:

Kernel oops in logs, black screen, lightdm never loads. Keyboard non-
responsive after a minute or two (caps lock fails to toggle light).
Power button DOES attempt to shut the computer down, but never actually
does -- one must press and hold. Problem affects a Thinkpad W510 and a
home-built desktop computer, both of which have nVidia cards and are
using the nVidia drivers (and have worked mostly without issue for
years).

3.8.0-17 is the last raring kernel that booted for me. I think this is
a pretty critical problem. The 3.9 release candidates also boot and are
actually very stable.

Attaching dmesg.0 and kern.log, there is clearly an oops and bug in
there related to the snd_htmi_intel module.

[Bug 1169325] Re: Latest linux-headers-3.8.0-18 with Nvidia causes freeze on boot

2013-04-19 Thread GonzO
Latest kernel (3.8.0-19) also broken, across all nvidia driver packages
(not just 310.44). This is, IMO, a *show stopping defect*.

I'm pasting a snippet of the kernel log below. It's where the kernel
starts to go south. Of interest is the fact that if you wait long
enough, the kernel might boot, but it never shuts down completely (have
to manually power off).

This is the jumbled text that the OP sees, and this issue is seen in
3.8.0-18 and -19, where things do not work correctly. My current theory
is that the hdmi sound driver in these kernels dies when an nVidia HDMI
capable card is in the machine and loaded with any of the proprietary
drivers.

[Bug 1169325] Re: Latest linux-headers-3.8.0-18 with Nvidia causes freeze on boot

2013-04-18 Thread GonzO
I spoke too soon. 3.8.0-18 is still giving me issues after a few
reboots, no matter what.

I installed 3.9 mainline, and its doing fine. What is going on. The new
pulseaudio takes up most of the CPU, 3.8.0-18 doesn't boot... it's a
little late to be doing world-shaking bugs, no?

Addendum: this fix works with *all* nVidia drivers in the repositories,
it is not specific to 310. I've tried it with all of them -- 304, 310,
313 and their -updates counterparts.

[Bug 1169325] Re: Latest linux-headers-3.8.0-18 with Nvidia causes freeze on boot

2013-04-17 Thread GonzO
It's *Plymouth*, of all things.

Workaround: Your normal grub boot line parameters are quiet splash
$vt_handoff. If your boot parameters are vga=normal nofb nomodeset,
this kernel boots and works 100%. I know this because I'm writing this
on Raring, with that kernel, and those parameters, whereas I was
freezing before.

[Bug 1061620] Re: Screen won't refresh after timed lock

2013-03-23 Thread GonzO
Same thing here.

I notice when the inactive time period is reached, the screen fades to
black, then turns off. My GUESS is that nothing tells it to fade back
up to color -- that the lock screen is actually displayed (as evidenced
by hitting enter to roll it up, and then password + enter to get back
into your session), but with a black overlay on it.

[Bug 1158915] [NEW] Unity: unmaximize puts window in the wrong position, and titlebar + window control buttons become unresponsive

2013-03-22 Thread GonzO
Public bug reported:

To replicate:

1) Log into unity.
2) Open Nautilus.
3) Maximize Nautilus (either by double-clicking the title bar or using the
button)
4) Unmaximize naitlus (either by double-clicking the title bar or using the
button)

Expected behavior: Nautilus returns to the same size and position it was
at before, and the title bar and its buttons continue to function

Actual behavior: Nautilus returns to the same size, but not the same
position... it is placed a title bar's height lower than it used to be,
and the title bar is completely non-responsive to any mouse interaction.
I can't click it, drag the window to a new position, or use any of the
buttons -- they do not highlight or respond to clicks.

Keyboard controls still work (CTRL + SUPER + UP/DOWN), but with every
unmaximization, the window gets placed 1 titlebar's height further down
the screen, and the titlebar and buttons never work again until the
program is killed (which I have to do in the launcher or with the pull-
downs) and restarted.

This makes Unity borderline unusable for me, and only started very
recently.

Not to be a stickler for details, but Launchpad appears to be completely

[Bug 877885] Re: memory leak in gnome-shell

2012-10-08 Thread GonzO
Spoke too soon. Leak still exists in Quantal/3.6, though
smaller/slower, and requires using the computer (not just letting it sit
there).

The Gnome team claims this is a known issue with the binary nVidia
driver, but have yet to state exactly *which* known issue it is.
Regardless, I've also reported it to nVidia.

[Bug 1061792] Re: Memory Leak in Unity (Compiz)

2012-10-04 Thread GonzO
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected quantal third-party-packages

** Description changed:

There seems to be a memory leak in Unity that comes with use (not age).

Hardware: ThinkPad W510 (nVidia Quadro FX 880M, driver 304.51), Core2
-Duo-based desktop with nVidia 560Ti (same driver)

Software: Quantal Beta, up-to-the-moment updates, both 64- and 32-bit
  (one of each).

*Note: I can *not* test with nouveau. Not only is it completely
unsuitable for laptops due to terrible power management, but neither
computer will boot with it - I get the PFIFO stuff, even though the -16
kernel was supposed to fix that.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1) Log into Unity and launch System Monitor (gnome-system-monitor). Set
to view all processes and organize by the memory column. Take note
of the amount of RAM taken by the Compiz and Xorg processes.

  2) Open a bunch of programs. I use: Nautilus, Gnome-Terminal, Chrome,
Banshee, EasyTag, EasyMP3Gain, Empathy, Eclipse, and Rhythmbox.

  3) Close all of the programs except gnome-system-monitor. Note the
increase in RAM the Compiz and Xorg processes take.

  4) Repeat steps 3-4. Memory on each process steadily rises.

It isn't by a lot, but it creates an environment wherein the longer one
uses one's Unity session, the less free RAM one has to work with (as
neither process ever seems to give up any of its RAM, ever, not even
  after 10 hours of use).

I don't seem to have any stability or performance issues stemming from
  this.

ALSO: Opening the dash at all raises the RAM usage by a LOT, and
subsequent openings of the dash (poking around, clicking on new buttons
that reveal icons I haven't seen before, etc) also grows the process's
RAM. By a LOT on the first run, but by a noticeable amount on later
  runs.

*I* think this is a pretty high-priority issue, but as the RAM use and
growth isn't all THAT large (~0.5/1 MiB every time steps 2-3 are
repeated), I could understand if it weren't marked critical... but I
think any leak is critical, so there's my bias.

STEALTH EDIT: I want to point out that just leaving the system logged in
does not cause Unity *or* Xorg to use more RAM over time. Not even with
  the indicator-multiload running.

- STEALTH EDIT #2: All lenses and scopes except the Application lens have
- been uninstalled, and do not factor into this. So I'm pretty sure we
- don't have a runaway call in any indexer or anything like it.

[Bug 1061792] Re: Memory Leak in Unity (Compiz)

2012-10-04 Thread GonzO
The Xorg leaks are very likely the X resource leaks described in bug
1050610 and bug 1057263. Those will bloat X rather than bloating the
offending process gtk-window-decorator.

I'm using the versions of Compiz that the fix for both were supposed to
have been released in.

Also, X is bloating, yes -- but much slower than the Compiz proc. It is always
smaller than the Compiz proc.

The issue with opening the dash using lots of memory is bug 982434.

...that's also my defect. :-)

Though this isn't complaining about that - the mem usage in the Dash is
high, yes, but eventually *stops* once you've seen everything you can
possibly see in there. (The shopping icons throw a monkey wrench into
that - whenever those options change up, the memory usage increases, so
there is a chance that the shopping lens can create an environment
wherein Unity will expand indefinitely. But I uninstalled that lens
anyway. :-))

If you think you have a new leak that is none of the above, please run this
command so we know what package versions are affected:
apport-collect 1061792

Oh my. That is *slick*. Incoming.

[Bug 885051] Re: eject stop working

2012-08-30 Thread GonzO
WORKAROUND (found on http://chakra-project.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?id=7513
, to give credit where its due):

There is a UDEV rule that prevents eject -i from working. The
following method helps it to get working again, but I have *no* real
idea why.

1. open /lib/udev/rules.d/60-cdrom_id.rules for editing

2. comment out (using the # symbol) the following line:

  ENV{DISK_EJECT_REQUEST}==?*, RUN+=cdrom_id --eject-media
$tempnode, GOTO=cdrom_end

3. If you don't feel like rebooting, reload the UDEV rules with

  sudo udevadm control --reload-rules

Now locking with eject -i 1 or eject -i on should work. I can
confirm this to be the case on my Thinkpad w510.

Thanks to all the devs for going above and beyond the call of duty --

OK, wow.

I hate to cloud up the bug with non-technical data, but Sebastian: I
want to go on record stating that I fully agreed with your assessment,
and *strongly* disagree with the assertion that you have some sort of an
attitude problem.

I'm actually embarrassed that some of the more recent comments have been
made in a defect report I submitted. I hope you do not think the entire
community is as ornery and entitled as all that.

And, thank you for expediting the process despite all that. I'm not
sure I would have had it in me to do the same.

[Bug 996604] Re: When number of workspaces is set to 1, the Spread no longer works

2012-06-28 Thread GonzO
Oh, right, somebody on the internet stated that's false, if that go
written on the internet that must be true... /irony

...was about to say that myself, and I'm the submitter. :-)

Not sure what you mean there. Unity doesn't put anything on other
workspace, if it does that's a bug and High one in this case.

Then I'll open one, but basically, yes: Unity can, and does, put things
on other workspaces under certain circumstances, and to make matters
worse, I'm not sure those circumstances are uncommon.

The one I'm most intimately familiar with right now: laptop that I use
in a dual-screen configuration at work, but a single-screen
configuration at home. I place Empathy and its chat windows on the
external monitor's screen at work (to the right, physically). At home,
when I launch Empathy, nothing shows up anywhere - because the Empathy
window has been automatically placed on the *workspace* to the right.

(Note: I never use workspaces proper, and this is not a problem that
occurs when I lower the number of available workspaces to 1.)

Hum, so it's working with unity 5.10, do you downgrade compiz as
well? The bug is currently assigned to compiz, if that's an unity issue
it should be reassigned

...it should definitely be reassigned, then. I can keep current Compiz
and downgrade unity to 5.10, and that does work as the other poster
says. (I'm not *going* to do that, because the bugfixes and
advancements in 5.12 outweigh this defect, but still).

[Bug 991552] Re: gtk-window-decorator crashes regularly

2012-05-01 Thread GonzO
Oh, goody. I was wondering if there was any movement on this.

I was unable to generate any sort of crash data myself.

Also, the defect isn't triggered by running Lotus Notes itself, but
rather by doing anything in Notes that would open a sub-dialog - i.e.,
inserting a signature, or opening the Preferences window. And the
problem isn't consistent - one of these dialog windows will take out the
decorator on the first run, but after its re-run, it doesn't always.

2012-04-16 Thread GonzO
Yup.

This is with all plugins and crossfading backend disabled, too. It
*looks like* its caching the song in memory, and never releasing it -
memory usage goes up every time there is a song change, be it natural or
prompted (ff/rewind buttons).

This is completely unusuable; you can *easily* accumulate hundreds, if
not thousands, of RAM by simply pushing FF a bunch of times.

[Bug 982434] [NEW] Dash uses a suspiciously large amount of memory

2012-04-15 Thread GonzO
Public bug reported:

This may not be a bug at all, but thought I'd report it anyway.

I am NOT reporting a memory leak - at least, I don't think so. I am
simply reporting this:

When I start a desktop session, Compiz uses 85M of memory. It stays
there as long as I *do not open the Dash*.

Once I open the Dash - simply pushing the Ubuntu button, and then
closing immediately - the memory usage climbs to ~120-150.

If I go through every page in the Dash and open every sub-page and see
every icon available, the memory usage clibms to ~185M.

Re-visiting the Dash, no matter how often, doesn't cause a further
increase, but I'm not certain the Dash should use ~100M of RAM all by
itself. I'm not sure how much it *should* use, but it just seems a bit
excessive.

[Bug 967879] [NEW] hud-service has a memory leak (I think)

2012-03-28 Thread GonzO
Public bug reported:

After about 8 hours of use, I closed all the following programs:

Pidgin
Eclipse
Rational Team Concert
ATT's AGNclient VPN software
Banshee
Chrome
Synaptic
Gnome-Calculator
Gnome-Terminal
Nautilus
Lotus Notes

...and noticed that hud-service is taking up 162M of RAM. It started
out taking up something like 24M.

Isn't that memory usage a little high?

[Bug 877885] Re: memory leak in gnome-shell

2012-02-17 Thread GonzO
I am using 3.3.5 from the Testing repositories.

If I DO NOT use the System Monitor extension, the leaks appear to be all
fixed. G-S starts with 85M, and eventually expands to no more than
~110-120M, depending on how many windows and workspaces I have open.

If I DO use the System Monitor extension, there is still a leak.

[Bug 732653] Re: Menus are hidden by default

2011-10-21 Thread GonzO
This is my #1 complaint about Unity.

And I actually *like* the GlobalMenu idea.

At least with the Launcher, I could turn the hiding behavior off (I hate
it when my shell hides things from me by default. I don't mind a switch
to *allow* me to hide things, if I want, but I never generally want
anything hidden, ever.)

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens

2011-10-18 Thread GonzO
I also vote [x] Global Menu only for maximized windows.

Having said that: I generally LIKE the Global Menu... however, I
genuinely *hate* that it is hidden until mouseover. There is just not
enough visual data to suggest that it is under there somewhere, and it
removes the ability to just click on what I want (instead having to
discover where the menu entries are first).

If we *must* have a global menu, let's please stop making it invisible.
That's flashy, but makes the desktop harder to use.

[Bug 735876] [NEW] Compiz Opacity not working in Ubuntu 10.10 x64 using IntelGraphics

2011-03-15 Thread Gonzo
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 w/Intel Integrated graphics chipset running Ubuntu
10.10 x64. It is a fresh install. In prior releases I
simply had to open CompizConfig Opacity New. Tap the Plus sign Grab
and then click on which ever item I wished to
Opacify. Then the item would be placed on the list and easily configured. I
have tried this several times now; even tried to
manually add items to the list. However, no matter how I add the item to the
list or whichever level of transparency I select, there is no response. Using
UbuntuTweak, panel and menu transparency is enabled. Anything I add my self
using the
CompizConfiguration Settings application doesn't work though. I have been
searching the web and my own brain for days now.
I'm spent. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas what I may be missing, their
help is appreciated. Thank you.

[Bug 546871] Re: ath5k system freeze induced by Chrome bookmark sync

2010-09-04 Thread GonzO
@Jens: It took a very long time, but even with that kernel I got the
black screen, blinking-caps-lock freeze on my T42p.

It SEEMS to only happen on this kernel when I leave the machine on long
enough for the screensaver to kick in - i.e., left it on overnight, came
to it in the morning all frozen.

The _only thing_ that keeps this machine stable is the MadWiFi (ath_pci)
driver. This driver works just fine with every network I try it on, but
it is a pain to have to recompile/re-insert the mod every time there is
a kernel upgrade. I've not once crashed when using that; I was trying
the new kernel out just to see if there was an easier way.

[Bug 581284] Re: ath5k kernel panic

2010-09-03 Thread GonzO
I've been using the Kernel PPA to run the mainline (2.6.35-19-generic
#25~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP, as of the time of this writing), and tempting
fate (using LOTS of bandwidth with ath5k, and then using Chrome's
bookmark/account sync in the middle of all of it).

It seems practically bullet-proof on this kernel. I wonder why 2.6.32
is so badly broken with this wifi module, but I can't say I'll be
thinking about it a lot now that I'm on Maverick's kernel.

[Bug 546871] Re: ath5k system freeze induced by Chrome bookmark sync

2010-09-03 Thread GonzO
I, too, seem to be solid as a rock using latest mainline kernel
(2.6.35-19-generic #25~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP as of the time of this
writing).

I wonder exactly what is wrong with 2.6.32's wifi stack - it clearly
isn't JUST the ath5k module, but the overall interaction between

- ath5k
- the rest of the TCP/IP networking stack, and
- NetworkManager (I've seen reports of fixing this problem by using WicD
instead)

Can't say I'll be thinking about it beyond today, as this new kernel
seems to cure my ills (and tell me that Maverick will be a good upgrade.

2010-09-03 Thread GonzO
I TAKE IT ALL BACK.

The new maverick kernel did NOT fix the problem. It just took a very
long time to replicate.

The only fix, so far, is to use the MadWiFi driver, compiled from

kind of bad... drops connections a lot.

Help?
