[Bug 1938013] Re: 4.15.0-151 is freezing various CPUs

2021-07-28 Thread Richard Gray
I want to add that I too began having problems on my Lenovo T480 after I
installed the 4.15.0-151 kernel. I have gone back to kernel 147 and
that solved all the problems. My problems were similar to those
reported above: the computer sometimes crashed on boot. When it did
manage to boot the mouse was often frozen and other things as well did
not function, such as volume control from the keyboard. Programs either
did not run or malfunctioned when run. When I tried to shutdown, it
would often just hang for an extended period of time and it was
necessary to use the power button.

[Bug 1891222] Re: Only notify Hyper-V for die events that are oops

2020-08-26 Thread William Breathitt Gray
SRU Template

[Impact]

Currently, Hyper-V may be notified of a panic for any die event.

However, this results in false panic notifications for various user
space traps that are die events.

The following commit fixes this by ignoring die events that is not an
oops:

608a973bd52e ("Drivers: hv: vmbus: Only notify Hyper-V for die events
that are oops")

[Test Case]

Without the fix in the Linux VM, do the following to demonstrate the
problem:

1. Create a VM in Azure.
2. Run a user space program that does a divide-by-zero. The user space
program will terminate abnormally because of the error.
3. Monitor notifications in the Azure portal in the Resource Health
section of the VM. There should be a report that the Linux VM has
   panicked.

With the fix, do the same steps. The panic report in Step #3 should not
happen.

[Regression Potential]

The risk of regression is low. This patch fixes the issue by ignoring
die events that aren't oops.

The upstream LKML thread mentions that DIE_PANIC may also be something
that should be reported, but it doesn't get emitted anywhere so this
might not be significantly different than DIE_OOPS.

[Bug 1875577] Re: Encrypted swap won't load on 20.04 with zfs root

2020-05-06 Thread John Gray
>Can you share a bit more details about how you have yours setup?

Sure!

Partitions:

root@eu1 ~ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:00 9.1T 0 disk
├─sda1 8:10 9.1T 0 part
└─sda9 8:90 8M 0 part
sdb 8:16 0 9.1T 0 disk
├─sdb1 8:17 0 9.1T 0 part

  └─md1 9:10 128.9G 0 raid1
└─md1swap 253:00 128.9G 0 crypt [SWAP]

(the nvme part 1 and 2s are set to type bf (solaris) using fdisk, and
the part 3s are set to type fd (linux raid auto)

MD config was set up with the command
DISK1=/dev/disk/by-id/nvme-SAMSUNG_MZVLB1T0HALR-0_S3W6NX0M802914
DISK2=/dev/disk/by-id/nvme-SAMSUNG_MZVLB1T0HALR-0_S3W6NX0M802933
mdadm --create /dev/md1 --level 1 --raid-disks 2 --metadata 1.0 ${DISK1}-part3
${DISK2}-part3

Then crypto device was configured:

root@eu1 ~ cat /etc/crypttab
#
md1swap /dev/md1/dev/urandom swap,cipher=aes-xts-plain64,size=256

And fstab:

root@eu1 ~ cat /etc/fstab
#
/dev/mapper/md1swap none swapdefaults 0 0

Then I rebooted to activate those last two.

FWIW, here is how I did the install, according to my notes, in case
there is something in there (or missing from there) that makes the
difference:

1. It's a Hetzner server, so I did the install from a PXE boot Debian
Buster rescue console - basically the same as installing from a live CD
command line rather than using the live CD installer

2. set disk variables for use by later commands
DISK1=/dev/disk/by-id/nvme-SAMSUNG_MZVLB1T0HALR-0_S3W6NX0M802914
DISK2=/dev/disk/by-id/nvme-SAMSUNG_MZVLB1T0HALR-0_S3W6NX0M802933

3. reset and partition disks

parted --script $DISK1 mklabel msdos mkpart primary 1 5Gib mkpart
primary 5GiB 825GiB mkpartprimary 825GiB 100% set 1 boot on

parted --script $DISK2 mklabel msdos mkpart primary 1 5Gib mkpart
primary 5GiB 825GiB mkpart primary 825GiB 100% set 1 boot on

fdisk $DISK1
  t
  1
  bf
  t
  2
  bf
  t
  3
  fd
  w

fdisk $DISK2
  t
  1
  bf
  t
  2
  bf
  t
  3
  fd
  w

fdisk -l
  check:
  DiskLabel type msdos
  2048 sector alignment
bootable flag set on partition 1
  size is correct
Type = Solaris, Solaris, Linux Raid Auto

4. create ZFS pools and datasets

  root pool
zpool create -R /mnt -O mountpoint=none -f -o ashift=13 ssd mirror
${DISK1}-part2 ${DISK2}-part2

  root dataset
zfs create -o acltype=posixacl -o compression=lz4 -o normalization=formD -o
relatime=on -o dnodesize=auto -o xattr=sa -o mountpoint=/ ssd/root

  boot pool
zpool create -o ashift=13 -d \
  -o feature@async_destroy=enabled \
  -o feature@bookmarks=enabled \
  -o feature@embedded_data=enabled \
  -o feature@empty_bpobj=enabled \
  -o feature@enabled_txg=enabled \
  -o feature@extensible_dataset=enabled \
  -o feature@filesystem_limits=enabled \
  -o feature@hole_birth=enabled \
  -o feature@large_blocks=enabled \
  -o feature@lz4_compress=enabled \
  -o feature@spacemap_histogram=enabled \
  -o feature@userobj_accounting=enabled \
  -O acltype=posixacl -O canmount=off -O compression=lz4 \
  -O devices=off -O mountpoint=none \
  -O normalization=formD -O relatime=on -O xattr=sa \
  -R /mnt -f bpool mirror ${DISK1}-part1 ${DISK2}-part1

  boot dataset
zfs create -o mountpoint=/boot bpool/boot

(order here was important - when I created the boot dataset first,
then I couldn't mount the root dataset and had to unmount and remount
them in correct order)

5. Install the minimal system

  cd ~

  wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/d/debootstrap/debootstrap_1.0.118ubuntu1_all.deb

  dpkg --install debootstrap_1.0.118ubuntu1_all.deb

  debootstrap --arch=amd64 focal /mnt http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/

6. System Configuration

Bind the virtual filesystems from the rescue environment to the new system
and chroot into it
mount --rbind /dev /mnt/dev
mount --rbind /proc /mnt/proc
mount --rbind /sys /mnt/sys
chroot /mnt /usr/bin/env DISK1=$DISK1 DISK2=$DISK2 bash --login

  Configure a basic system environment

hostname
  echo eu1.kapitalyou.com > /etc/hostname && echo 127.0.0.1
eu1.kapitalyou.com >> /etc/hosts

network
get rescue shell interface name and convert it to persistent naming
ip addr show
udevadm test-builtin net_id

[Bug 1875577] Re: Encrypted swap won't load on 20.04 with zfs root

2020-05-05 Thread John Gray
While we are waiting for upstream to include the patch, is this bug
report and attached patch something that would be suitable for me to
share on zfs forums so other keen Ubuntu zfs-on-root users can have a
workaround, or would that constitute rushing out a fix without
review/testing?

[Bug 1875577] Re: Encrypted swap won't load on 20.04 with zfs root

2020-05-05 Thread John Gray
Hi Richard and Dider, thanks - I have set up encrypted swap on mdraid1
instead. It works but is subject to the same cycle issue - sometimes
swap doesn't load, sometimes the boot zfs pool won't mount.

I went to apply the patch, but my system doesn't seem to have the two files
that are referenced,
etc/systemd/system-generators/zfs-mount-generator.in
and
/etc/systemd/system/zfs-mount.service.in
and so the patch command failed.

I have probably misunderstood something, sorry... I'm way out of my
depth here. FWIW here are the contents of the directories for the
missing files:

The system was installed with debootstrap:

dpkg --install debootstrap_1.0.118ubuntu1_all.deb
debootstrap --arch=amd64 focal /mnt http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/

I did not install any zfs packages separately - the system only has what
debootstrap gave it:

root@eu1 ~ dpkg -l | grep zfs
ii libzfs2linux 0.8.3-1ubuntu12
amd64OpenZFS filesystem library for Linux
ii zfs-initramfs0.8.3-1ubuntu12
amd64OpenZFS root filesystem capabilities for Linux - initramfs
ii zfs-zed 0.8.3-1ubuntu12
amd64OpenZFS Event Daemon
ii zfsutils-linux 0.8.3-1ubuntu12
amd64command-line tools to manage OpenZFS filesystems

Many thanks for looking at this so quickly! :-)

[Bug 1875577] [NEW] Encrypted swap won't load on 20.04 with zfs root

2020-04-28 Thread John Gray
Public bug reported:

root@eu1:/var/log# lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Release:20.04
Codename: focal

OTHER BACKGROUND INFO:
==

1. machine has 2 drives. each drive is partitioned into 2 partitions,
zfs and swap

2. Ubuntu 20.04 installed on ZFS root using debootstrap
(debootstrap_1.0.118ubuntu1_all)

3. The ZFS root pool is a 2 partition mirror (the first partition of each disk)

4. /etc/crypttab is set up as follows:

swap /dev/disk/by-id/nvme-SAMSUNG_MZVLB1T0HALR-0_S3W6NX0M802914-part2
  /dev/urandom swap,cipher=aes-xts-plain64,size=256
swap /dev/disk/by-id/nvme-SAMSUNG_MZVLB1T0HALR-0_S3W6NX0M802933-part2
  /dev/urandom swap,cipher=aes-xts-plain64,size=256

WHAT I EXPECTED
===

I expected machine would reboot and have encrypted swap that used two
devices under /dev/mapper

WHAT HAPPENED INSTEAD
=

On reboot, swap setup fails with the following messages in /var/log/syslog:

Apr 28 17:13:01 eu1 kernel: [5.360793] systemd[1]: cryptsetup.target: Found
ordering cycle on systemd-cryptsetup@swap.service/start

Apr 28 17:13:01 eu1 kernel: [5.360797] systemd[1]: cryptsetup.target: Found
dependency on zfs-load-module.service/start
Apr 28 17:13:01 eu1 kernel: [5.360798] systemd[1]: cryptsetup.target: Found
dependency on cryptsetup.target/start
Apr 28 17:13:01 eu1 kernel: [5.360799] systemd[1]: cryptsetup.target: Job
systemd-cryptsetup@swap.service/start deleted to break ordering cycle starting
with cryptsetup.target/start
. . . . . .
Apr 28 17:13:01 eu1 kernel: [5.361082] systemd[1]: Unnecessary job for
/dev/disk/by-id/nvme-SAMSUNG_MZVLB1T0HALR-0_S3W6NX0M802914-part2 was removed

Also, /dev/mapper does not contain any swap devices:

root@eu1:/var/log# ls -l /dev/mapper
total 0
crw--- 1 root root 10, 236 Apr 28 17:13 control
root@eu1:/var/log#

And top shows no swap:

When trying to use SDL2 in a project (GZDoom) with CMake, I encountered the
following error:

CMake Error at src/CMakeLists.txt:1164 (add_executable):
Target "zdoom" links to item "-L/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu -lSDL2 " which
has leading or trailing whitespace. This is now an error according to
  policy CMP0004.

This is the relevant part of the CMakeLists.txt:

--

find_package( SDL2 REQUIRED CONFIG )

--

I see that this bug was fix in Debian back in 2016 with the release of
package version 2.0.4+dfsg2-1: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=822210#52

Ubuntu xenial (16.04LTS) is currently on an older version
(2.0.4+dfsg1-2ubuntu2.16.04.2) before the bug fix was applied.

Can the Debian bug fix be picked up for Ubuntu xenial (16.04LTS)?

[Bug 1782709] Re: Updating systemd kills network on bionic

2019-06-12 Thread James Gray
Can confirm the same behaviour on my systems too. Updating systemd
recently caused the entire routing table to be dropped (I had console
access and was able to confirm no routes - not even loopback worked). In
normal operation I see:

>ip route show
default via 10.0.0.1 dev eno1 src 10.0.0.60 metric 202
10.0.0.0/24 dev eno1 proto dhcp scope link src 10.0.0.60 metric 202

However, when systemd is updated, the route table is blank although
interfaces maintain their addresses etc. When working remotely, I need
to get remote hands to reboot the system to restore normal functionality
which obviously extends down time. We have implemented procedures to
watch the route table and if it disappears, triggers a reboot but this
is problematic as it could happen before the update process is finished.

then I ran the update-initramfs -u, as suggested. I got this:

[Bug 1793350] [NEW] column error if no trailing newline

2018-09-19 Thread Patrick Gray
Public bug reported:

The utility ``column`` gives the error ``column: line too long``, and
does not produce the correct output, when given an input without a
trailing newline:

$ python3 -c "print('a\nb\nc')" | column
a b c
$ python3 -c "print('a\nb\nc', end='')" | column
column: line too long
a b
$

This seems to be a bug, as it is not the case on my Manjaro laptop,
which uses the column utility from pacman's util-linux package:

$ python3 -c "print('a\nb\nc')" | column
a b c
$ python3 -c "print('a\nb\nc', end='')" | column
a b c
$ pacman -Qo column
/usr/bin/column is owned by util-linux 2.32.1-2

Building the util-linux on ubuntu similarly gives what would appear to
be correct behaviour:

$ make column > /dev/null
$ python3 -c "print('a\nb\nc', end='')" | ./column
a b c
$

[Bug 1772530] Re: OpenLDAP depends on old version of KRB5 which conflicts with other packages

2018-05-23 Thread Dylan Gray
I did some research, and it looks like adcli fires the same linker
warnings I was seeing, but just ignores them and everything works. I
guess I will have to go down the path of dynamically checking
dependencies for the LDAP package at runtime and only load the library
if it doesn't conflict, meaning this feature won't be on Ubuntu, but it
doesn't look like there is another option from my end. I would still
love it if there were MIT specific LDAP packages released, so if you
decide to go down that path, please let me know. Thanks for the help!

Yes. On other distros, it links directly to libkrb5.so. That in turn can
either link to Heimdal or MIT, resolving the problem.

I will look into nslcd and adcli and can hopefully get working from
there. Thanks for the help.

[Bug 1772530] Re: OpenLDAP depends on old version of KRB5 which conflicts with other packages

2018-05-22 Thread Dylan Gray
Ryan,

That makes sense. And yes, if I could deal with credentials like LDAP
does, that would be incredibly convenient, but I cannot.

In theory, I can parse the ELF structure of the LDAP library at runtime,
check if there is the dependency issue, and then load the ldap library
dynamically if everything is fine, but that would be a pain to implement
and we would essentially just be disabling this feature on Ubuntu which
would be sad. I know RHEL and SLES have an OpenLDAP version which has a
dependency on MIT Kerberos. Ideally for me, there would be libldap2-mit
and libldap2-mit-dev packages I could apt-get, and all my problems would
go away without breaking anyone. That being said, I know that is kind of
a big ask.

[Bug 1772530] Re: OpenLDAP depends on old version of KRB5 which conflicts with other packages

2018-05-22 Thread Dylan Gray
Ryan,

The dependency is a problem because my program depends on gssapi_krb5,
krb5, sasl, and openldap. On Ubuntu, the linker will throw errors
because "libkrb5.so.26, needed by //usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/libgssapi.so.3, may conflict with libkrb5.so." libgssapi.so.3 is
required by libldap2-dev as we discussed earlier. On other distro's,
they have an option for openldap which relies on MIT Kerberos instead of
Heimdal. Installing libsasl2-modules-gssapi-mit doesn't resolve this as
openldap still relies on Heimdal instead of MIT Kerberos like the other
modules.

[Bug 1772530] Re: OpenLDAP depends on old version of KRB5 which conflicts with other packages

2018-05-22 Thread Dylan Gray
Ryan,

Ah, MIT vs Heimdal implementations make sense. Is there a way to install
openldap with a dependency on MIT kerberos instead of Heimdal? From the
dependencies listed at https://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libldap-2.4-2,
it looks like the default openldap package depends on Heimdal. Also, is
there a dev package for the MIT version? I would love to have both the
dev and standard packages available. Thanks!

[Bug 1772530] [NEW] OpenLDAP depends on old version of KRB5 which conflicts with other packages

2018-05-21 Thread Dylan Gray
Public bug reported:

Currently, Ubuntu 16.04's newest offered version of OpenLDAP is version
2.4.42. This version depends on libgssapi3 which in turn depends libkrb5
version 2.6. Many other common libraries (like gssapi_krb5) depend on
libkrb5 3.0. From what I can tell, OpenLDAP version 2.4.44 fixes this
issue, but it is not available from any of the Ubuntu repo's. It would
be fabulous if this could be fixed.

I can confirm that I also had an issue with this. Could not create an
account until I rebooted my system AND deleted the config files in my
home directory. The "check for authentication types" button auto set it
to kerberos, but that later threw the odd "SPNEGO cannot find mechanisms
to negotiate" error. After changing it BACK to NTML, it worked
flawlessly.

[Bug 1690441] [NEW] libappindicator should check for the StatusNotifierWatcher interface.

2017-05-12 Thread Jason L Gray
Public bug reported:

libappindicator should check for the StatusNotifierWatcher interface as
it indicates that something is actually listening and throw an error if
the interface is not found. As it depends on that interface (and it's
kin) for functionality.

Example case:

GNOME Shell (and really EVERY other DE except Plasma or Unity) does not
have native libappindicator support therefor if an app were to try to
use libappindicator for a tray icon you get no tray icon with no clear
reason why.

Silent failure isn't cool guys.

[Bug 1663906] Re: indicator-sound does not listen for MPRIS Playlist Property changes or PlaylistChanged Signal

2017-02-11 Thread Jason L Gray
** Description changed:

indicator-sound checks for playlists once when the player interface
becomes available but after that does not listen for ANY Property
changes or the PlaylistChanged Signal(correctly at least if it tries,
it's doing it wrong. I have not read the source code).

This leads to players that don't immediately have playlists available on
interface creation not having playlists displayed. This also leaves
players no way to update the playlists even if they are present. The
effect then is that new playlists are not added to the list and
playlists that have been renamed are not updated in the sound menu's
  playlist list.

indicator-sound should listen for all Property changes and the
  PlaylistChanged Signal.

For a working implementation see https://github.com/eonpatapon/gnome-
  shell-extensions-mediaplayer

- For a example of an app that implements the interface correctly(as many

I do not know how this relates, but I used ramdisk (tmpfs) for /tmp directory.
strange. I thought it was normal practice. now i commented out corresponding
line in fstab and those additional lines from previous message are gone away.
although this does not solve the whole problem, I think initially it appeared
because of this
