[Bug 283659] Re: buffer overflow in amsynth in 8.10

2009-05-28 Thread huiii
I had exactly the same problem after installing amsynth with synaptic on ubuntu
jaunty 64bit.
never had problems on previous ubuntu versions...
so i uninstalled it, went to amsynth website and downloaded source, compiled
and now it works perfect.

[Bug 49965] Re: dosfsck breaks usplash

2009-05-15 Thread huiii
ubuntu jaunty,

this bug still persists.
it is a bug here, as it does not just break usplash (i would not bother) but it
forces fsck routine check on every boot-up.
annoying.. first i thought it was a disk-error, but several checks on all
partitions of this 1year old HDD showed that there is nothing wrong with my
disks. Just after 2h fiddling around I came across this page and went right
away to switch off fsck-check on my fat32 disk by editing fstab. Now everything
goes as it should.

[Bug 275379] Re: Intrepid: KDM Sometimes Doesn't Appear

2009-03-06 Thread huiii
I just discovered that when starting with kernel option verbose instead of

(at grub select boot entry - press e - select the kernel options - press e -
remove the trailing splash)
everything just goes fine.
now i just need to know how i can reconfigure the splash seq in a way, that
this annoyance does not happen anymore, any ideas?

as i have tested the boot up with nvidia enabled and without, always

[Bug 309139] Re: Disk idle timeout settings (30sec) of Laptop-mode are not being respected, disk spins down every 5sec

2008-12-18 Thread huiii
I am so sorry, yesterday, i was quite tired and wrote spin UP but i ment spin
DOWN!! which is a different story!!!
embarrassing.. well, i fixed the subject now, my apologies..
the spinUP times are ok so far, i tweaked around and have chosen different apps
for battery-time (like browsing with opera is far less disk-agressive than
firefox)

but back to the subject:

my disk spins down after 5sec,
i have set laptop-mode to spin down disk after 30sec,
but it is ignored, also after restarting / rebooting.
$ sudo hdparm -S 12 /dev/sda is being ignored, too.

now my bug-question:
could this be related to pm-utils?
ubuntu seems to be moving slowly towrds pm-utils...
could it be, that my settings are being brutally overridden by pm-utils?

./usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/laptop-mode script seems to point to a non existing
file (/etc/default/laptop-mode)..
should i disable it and see what happens?

thx again

[Bug 135548] Re: [Gutsy] Action on critical battery isn't triggered - regression

2008-12-17 Thread huiii
this is very bad:

i got it too!
Sony VAIO FZ31M, ubuntu intrepid

the first time, after installation it worked automatically; gpm warned me and
1min later hibernated as set.
i was so happy, the first time it ever worked out of the box.
so i never thought about it anymore.. BUT since then it never worked again,
meaning, i am trusting the gpm to do his job and suddenly, BUZZ laptop dead.

since then i tried gconf-manager, changing settings like mentioned above, but
nothing works.
what works is the warning you have one minute remaining before hibernation
and after 5min BUZZ dead.

in Hardy i helped myself by adjustin laptop-mode.conf, but those options are
gone in Intrepid!
what can we do?

[Bug 95444] Re: No Screen Backlight Control; Sony Vaio with nvidia 8 series graphics

2008-12-15 Thread huiii
@all,

first thanks for putting so much energy into this,

I recently wrote such an how-to here:

but just today i found this bug report with other solutions by coincidence...

i have a request though:
the procedure displayed here is quite confusing,
after reading the whole page, i do not know for sure what i should do and why i
am doing it?!

so i think it would be a very good idea to put this down on a how-to.
would somebody be willing to help me implement the solutions from here into
that how-to?

thx again

1)

2)

paste this text and save:

3)
now we need to make it executable:

4)
and then under

test and reboot and voila, works,,,
if not try to play with the sleep ... setting in the script, perhaps on your

ok, nevertheless i tried the script of Shawe Ewahs and the one of yleetiny on

unfortunately i do not know exactly what both solutions where supposed to do,
but apart from the weird effect i got now when changing brightness with the

shivering, nothing else did work:
no gnome-power-manager-support
no dim when switching to battery...

[Bug 301791] Re: flash player not fully working on Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit Firefox 3

2008-12-09 Thread huiii
thanks for advice, i followed it,
went to adobe's site and got newest flashplugin for 64bit,
removed all flash-pkgs and the nasty nspwrapper,
created a folder in /usr/lib called flashplugin-nonfree and extracted it there.
made simlinks to it under the plugi-folders of mozilla, firefox and iceweasel.
everything is working fine,
it is way better than before...
nevertheless, i still get 60% CPU...
is this normal?
under windows i would get for the same film 25% CPU...
what is this?

[Bug 301791] Re: flash player not fully working on Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit Firefox 3

2008-12-09 Thread huiii
thank you very much for your swift response!

in the meantime I was checking the behavior of the CPU with the new 64bit
flashplugin,
while with the former set of npwrapper and flashplugin the CPU would shoot up
to 60-80% on 2GHZ,
it now seems to stay on 800MHZ, indeed, even-though it shows 60% CPU.

also, the ventilation does not kick in now, which means something good.
I did the checks unplugged from power and it was behaving much better than
before:
Now i would be able to watch 100min of a flash-movie (and have still some
battery left) where with the old plugin battery would exhaust completely after
80min... great!

thanks again to you...
bye

I wated for that now very long...

[Bug 286932] Re: openoffice and skype menus and buttons disappear and reappear hovering over with mouse

2008-12-04 Thread huiii
i am using now the newest nvidia prop. driver 177.83 from nvidia-site.
fresh ibex i installation.
openoffice is nearly unusable with compiz enabled.
skype got better, but now and than shows some similar symptoms.

from my observation this has something to do with non refreshing graphics,
so in openoffice, when the progress bar appears in the status-bar, the image of
it will remain there and just disappear when moving the window of oo.
the same happens with text: if i write something and than i delete it, the
deleted text will not disappear.
it does so when moving the window of oo.

hope this helps somehow..

SOLVED for me today with installation beta prop. driver from nvidia

this driver does it very well.
no problems at all so far, better overall performance...
openoffice is working fine now, skype too.
it was after all an nvidia-driver issue.

[Bug 245847] Re: high cpu load cairo-dock (interpid)

2008-12-03 Thread huiii
hello, to inform you on what i understood is really the case:

-on hardy we have a package which we need to run nearly any app on ubuntu
called libcairo.
this package was compiled with --glitz enabled.
glitz renders the graphics through the gpu of your 3d-graphic-card, like nvidia.
which means, what costs normally 70% CPU to render zooming .svg, with GPU it is
1000x faster and keeps CPU low at 5%.

-now on inteprid, this package libcairo is called libcairo2 and it comes
unfortunately without --glitz enabled.
so your cairo-dock is not usable or works very slow and slugish.
compiling libcairo2 myself with --glitz enabled resulted in cairo-dock being
able to run with the option --glitz but there seems something in libcairo2 to
be wrong and the rendering looks very bad.
i guess that is why it comes now without glitz enabled.

hope this helps to look further

2008-11-28 Thread huiii
the problem is:
cairo-dock from ubuntu repo is compiled without glitz.
even though depends on glitz libs when installing.

this makes cairo-dock unusable, so that is why some people get a cairo-dock
repo.
than, after installing that version, ibex wants to make an update.
unless you lock the version in synaptic.
and than it crashes, blablabla and you end up here..

how about compiling cairo-dock for ubuntu-repo with glitz?
that would be genius! and great.
thx 1000x

[Bug 258823] Re: OpenOffice buttons are invisible and reappear when you hover over them

2008-11-27 Thread huiii
as i understand it from my observations is that the whole application OO will
not refresh its graphics.
this causes buttons to appear and disappear, but also leaves the process-bar on
the status bar once it is ready. to have the satus-bar refreshed, i need to
move the OO window around. the same thing goes for deleted text: instead of
disappearing, it remains full or half drawn, but once i move the OO-window, it
refreshes and the deleted words disappear.

hope this helps to find out if this is the same bug when using newest
nvidia-driver OR fglrx / with compiz enabled.

thx

ok, it is proven on this system here,
going back to nvidia-drivers version 173 (proprietary) helped,

bugs are there in combination of compiz and proprietary drivers from

[Bug 283681] Re: tracker-applet disappeared

2008-10-15 Thread huiii
now i removed everything tracker-related from the system.
wipe-out.
than restarted the box.
than installed all back again.
restarted the box, systempreferencessearch and indexing on, on,
and voila.
that icon is back.
i will see how well this went at the end of the day.
if you hear nothing from me, everything is fine.
thx

[Bug 283681] [NEW] tracker-applet disappeared

2008-10-15 Thread huiii
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

This is happening on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 64bit.
tracker version 0.6.6-0ubuntu3.8.04.1
tracker is enabled and when session starts, after login, tracker-applet icon
appears in gnome-panel-system-tray beside the other icons, like power,
bluetooth, network, sound, etc...
Tracker was working fine for nearly half a year now, till some days ago, when
the tracker-applet icon somehow disappeared from the gnome-panel and never came
back.
?

now i filed a new bug-report, since the other bugreports similar to this
one are at the end not the same.

if i do
$ ps -e |grep tracker
i get nothing wierd:
trackerd and tracker-applet are working, no double-processes or so.
tracker-search-tool works from terminal and it is still working fine.
trackerd starts at session-start and indexes like always.

it is just that stupid icon that is gone.
i tried a lot of stuff, but its a waste of time.
starting tracker-applet with sudo leads to the same, no icon.

the file tracker-applet.cfg shows AutoHideIcon=false.
what can i do?
what have i done?

[Bug 205005] Re: scripts in /etc/acpi/resume.d don't run after resume from suspend-to-ram [hardy]

2008-07-13 Thread huiii
edit:
i managed to get pm-sleep working by doing the following (tip from launchpad):
$ sudo su
$ echo SUSPEND_MODULES=\uvcvideo\ /etc/pm/config.d/unload_modules
$ chmod +x /etc/pm/config.d/unload_modules

now, after suspend with pm-suspend, the changes suggested above had
effect.

[Bug 205005] Re: scripts in /etc/acpi/resume.d don't run after resume from suspend-to-ram [hardy]

2008-07-09 Thread huiii
hello.
what a big mess... is billy behind all this, hahaha,
first of all: the pm-sleep and pm-hibernate do not work for me,
instead i use suspend scripts in /etc/acpi/ folder, they work perfect.
as a consequence i added the extra-scripts in the /etc/acpi/resume.d.
when i put laptop to hibernate, the extra-scripts are executed well on resume.
when i put laptop to sleep, they do not work... why?

also, i cannot switch of the login-prompt that appears after resume from sleep,
not in the old fashion way, change in the acpi-support not to prompt, does not
work and also not by disabling it under gconf-editor. should i file a new
bugreport?
also googling for hours and i still cannot find an answer as the whole net is
spammed with millions of ubuntu sleep/hibernation bugs latelly... phew

[Bug 33214] Re: gnome-screensaver restores default color-correction settings

2008-07-08 Thread huiii
my gnome-screensaver won't get dark, it stops half way.
btw: this application s*cks big time and resources when glitz-apps running, you
can see gnome-screensaver going up with cpu-usage to around 20%,
it is simply irritating and the best way to save screens, i thought, is to
switch them off / put them to sleep, especially on laptops, regarding batt-life.

[Bug 199803] Re: Restarting X causes Xfce Xfapplet with Gnome System Monitor to fail

2008-07-07 Thread huiii
this is so annoying:
always, when restarting X, with
ctrl-alt-backspace
or
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
or in tty by doing
/etc/init.d/gdm stop / start,
I got 100% cpu load. oaa
so I always had to go back to tty (ctrl-alt-f1) and do
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
killall xfce4-xfapplet-plugin
/etc/init.d/gdm start

but now i have a very well working workaround: :)

sudo gedit /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default
add the command
killall xfce4-xfapplet-plugin
at the end right before exit 0:
save, now everytime you logout or do ctrl-alt-backspace
the applet will be killed without being deleted from panel.

sudo gedit /etc/init.d/gdm
add the command
killall xfce4-xfapplet-plugin
to line 83, it should look like this:
  stop)
log_begin_msg Stopping GNOME Display Manager...
start-stop-daemon --stop --quiet --oknodo --pidfile $PIDFILE --name
gdm $SSD_ARG --retry 30 /dev/null 21
killall xfce4-xfapplet-plugin
log_end_msg 0

save, now you can work normal in tty and once you have to resatrt gdm,
you will notice nothing anymore.

hope this helps the few, till its fixed.
cheers.

[Bug 190754] Re: Over-optimistic buffering in PulseAudio causes underruns (audible stuttering, pops)

2008-06-10 Thread huiii
might this be related to Xorg? in conjunction with other bugs /
de-optimizations here and elsewhere?
I find it very demanding, lately..
scrolling firefox, openoffice, thunderbird, skype, switching tabs, minimizing,
maximizing, etc.. peaks Xorg to exaggerated CPU-usage...it got better in
average, dropouts of sound became rare, but i find it altogether worse than
under gutsy on slower laptop.

[Bug 236516] [NEW] [users-admin] add-user-button inactive / sudo has no permission

2008-06-01 Thread huiii
Public bug reported:

i am running ubuntu hardy 64bit and i have this bug now:
i wanted to add a new user.
under systemadministrationusers and groups the add-user button is inactive

i also cannot change settings of my own account, as if i am some user, but i am

everything is grayed out. so i could not, by any means add a new user, nor
change my own settings.
when launching this application through xterm
$ sudo users-admin
i get following message:
** (users-admin:15450): CRITICAL **: Unable to lookup session information for

i was able to create a new user by doing
$ sudo adduser username though..
i installed this system fresh one week ago and i did, as far as i can remember,
nothing weird.
is there any solution?

2008-05-31 Thread huiii
hello,
i followed by now more or less the suggestions / links mentioned in this thread:
things got better in general. latest updates seem to fix some related stuff too.

experiencing some symptoms discribed above:
when listening to rhythmbox while browsing the net with firefox, switching fro
tab to tab can cause interrupts in playback.
anyone experiencing this?

[Bug 190754] Re: Over-optimistic buffering in PulseAudio causes underruns (audible stuttering, pops)

2008-05-25 Thread huiii
some usb cards NEED asoundrc, otherwise ALSA has no clue how to deal with it.
my alesis io|2 worked just with asound configured under ubuntu gutsy but under
hardy it goes without.
anyway,
since hardy i am experiencing a lot aof issues.
one of them is rhytmbox in combo with browsing the net with firefox.
sound stops for a moment when i switch between tabs inside the browser.
Xorg shoots up to 100% CPU for a moment.
the funny thing is:
its running on a intel 2ghz 2duo, 2gb ram, sony vaio, xubuntu hardy 8.04 64bit,
2.6.24-16-rt.
compiz is on.
i tried pulseaudio -k:
it is slightly better, but after a while when wild-tabbing inside firefox,
rhythmbox will interrupt sound again. viewing top reveals dramatic increase
of CPU through Xorg up to 100%.
on my system is not just rhythmbox that stutters:
if u use brasero and burn a cd while watching a film or listen to music in any
player everything will shutter, spit and chopp till cd burning is finished.
compiz-animations are than affected, too.
again viewing top reveals dramatic usage of CPU of Xorg by 100%.
my guess is that we are dealing here not just with one bug.
changing buffersizes is like opium for tooth-pain, it minimizes the symptoms
but does not fix the cause(s).
it might be linked to some changes / bugs that came together
-in the kernel,
-in ubuntu hardy
-in pulseaudio
-gstreamer
-in Xserver
-in compiz
??
where should i start?

i installed nvclock from repo which is the latest (nvclock 0.8beta3) and that
says it just supports nvidia cards up to 7xxx series.
i got now, lets see what this does...

Error!
Smartdimmer is only supported on certain laptops using a Geforce 6200/7x00Go.

Re: [Bug 173517] Re: ubuntu gutsy 7.10 / compiz / second xscreen / no keyboard

2007-12-10 Thread huiii
i'm sure this is a bug, the keyboard should not be claimed. and the
other bug is that nobody who uses compiz on gnome seems to use keyboard
on second xscreen .. :)
but to be sure: your keyboard works on second xscreen when compiz disabled?
perhaps we should spam our bug-report to attract some attention on
similiar bug-reports... 0_O

marriouss wrote:
 Yes, I use GNOME (ubuntu).
I have noticed that the keyboard seem to be claimed by one of the screens.
So, if initially is claimed by the first screen, when I'm making the smplayer
fullscreen, then the second screen claims the keyboard. Until then (until
making the smplayer window fullscreen), even if the mouse is on the second
screen and I click on a window on the second screen, any keyboard input is
still sent to the first screen.

Another thing: the fullscreen thing doesn't work on totem player, but
works with vlc and smplayer (that uses qt, so it is for KDE).

[Bug 173517] Re: ubuntu gutsy 7.10 / compiz / second xscreen / no keyboard

2007-12-09 Thread huiii
marrious, hello,

thanks for your advice, actually it has the same effect as the temporary
solution i mentioned above, but it was worth trying it.
are you using GNOME-desktop?
i heard that it is a GNOME issue, not KDE, but i cannot confirm this.
In the mean-time, i installed and configured Fluxbox for my
live-video-performances, its a great, very light window-manager,, after login
you count not even 1 second and your desktop is ONLINE!
It does not work with compiz but is lightning fast and no problems with second
xscreen, of course. so for now i go like this:
-GNOME-environment for daily use and watch tv in same conditions like you
described, FLUXBOX for serious stuff.
it is a pitty that nobody seems to care about keyboard access to second xscreen
under GNOME/Compiz/Emerald... i cannot believe that you and me are the only
nurds complaining about this!
bye

[Bug 173517] Re: ubuntu gutsy 7.10 / compiz / second xscreen / no keyboard

2007-12-03 Thread huiii
well, i followed your comment above (update1, the weird part) and this will not
work for me... so, my second screen stays useless, unless i switch off compiz.
it means: with metacity, gtk-window-decorator enabled and compiz disabled,
everything works perfect...

/ubuntu/7.10/nvidia/6600go/laptop

to at least (with two xscreens) have primary screen work nice with
compiz and emerald, menus working normal etc I wrote a script :) that
goes on gdm start-up :

#!/bin/bash
#switch between compiz 2 screens or 1 screen

VIDEOCARD1=`/bin/cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |grep -c TV-0`
VIDEOCARD2=`/bin/cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |grep -c CRT-0`
if [ $VIDEOCARD1 = 0 ] [ $VIDEOCARD2 = 0 ]; then
sleep 0
else
TWINVIEW=`/bin/cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf |grep -c TWINVIEW`
fi
if [ $TWINVIEW = 0 ]; then
sleep 3
compiz --replace --only-current-screen
emerald --replace
else
sleep 0
fi

basically what it does is: checks if any second monitor is attached to my
laptop.
than if not, nothing happens, if yes, it checks if i have a xorg.conf for
twinview.
if so: nothing happens cause there, compiz works fine on both screens.
if not twinview xorg.conf, than it will do this:

compiz --replace --only-current-screen
emerald --replace

this two little lines i found in the ubuntu forum.
when applying them, first screen works fine, but second screen not.
well, at least i can use now the second screen to watch a film on the
TV-monitor, while first screen behaves normal.
but to perform with veejay i have to switch off compiz, as i need the keyboard
to control video on second screen.
i dont use twinview for video on second screen, as the quality gets bad there:
the well-known horizontal split-line in the middle of the screen;
xscreen-setup in xorg allows me to pass an exact modeline for PAL-TV, witch
makes video look correct again (no horizontal split).
to be honest, i dont care if compiz works when I'm performing with live video,
but it would be schick, of course, to show off, 0-o
perhaps all this information helps!?

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2007-12-02 Thread huiii
well, i agree on bug nr 1.
microsoft.
i work a lot with video-editing-suits for professional use and its frustrating
to still have to boot on windows to run premiere pro or aftereffects. mac has a
better feeling than windows but ubuntu feels like home and it made wonderful
improvements. everything works smooth and barely hangs. plus all the other
super-top-features. if there would be some kind of commercial software market
for the middle-class linux freelance video-editors or artists, that would
help a lot.
so i will have to live double lives, windows and mac for professional
audio/video-editing, linux for all the rest:
internet, experimenting, vj, daily-use, etc...
:(

[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy

i would recommend not to comment out nvidiafb.
there are issues known and what you really want is vesafb.
leaving nvidiafb in the blacklist is goood.

[Bug 149764] Re: slow gtk popup menus with gtk dual head

2007-11-12 Thread huiii
yesyes, i got it too
buaah
i followed the same tip as Pasi Savolainen and the delaying menus thing is gone.
but it looks not nice when starting up, makes me remember my first winter-car
experience:
you turn arround the key, the car gasps and gasps and gasps and hey it
started up!
if anybody knows what i mean..
