Re: [Bug 1895157] Re: Boinc cannot enable RPC access to start client or manager

2020-10-26 Thread ikesterhaney
This bug specifically references a case where the password is created
properly. The password that auto generates oui r is put in manually is
inaccessible by the boinc manager. This is due to it being owned by root
and only viewable by the boinc group. The boinc client is run under the
boinc username and group and can thus edit the file. Boinc Manager is run
under the local username and thus cannot access the password in the file.
Creation if the files password or lack thereof is technically a different
bug.
The possible solutions that come to mind are
1. Make the file world readable or at least readable to the local user
group.
2. Make Boinc Manager an elevated task much like the package manager apps.
I'm sure there are other solutions but I am not a programmer or packager.

[Bug 1895157] Re: Boinc cannot enable RPC access to start client or manager

2020-10-02 Thread ikesterhaney
By manually extracting the password from the file in /etc/boinc-client
and entering it into Boinc Manager does connect it to the client. So
this might be a minor configuration issue.

[Bug 1895157] Re: Boinc cannot enable RPC access to start client or manager

2020-09-11 Thread ikesterhaney
Some research unearthed a reason and possible solution -

This error happens when the user has no permission to use the RPC port number,
or forgotten to allow it through the firewall.
Happens in combination with Gstate.init() failed, error code: -180

To set BOINC to use a specific port number, one different from the default
31316, do:
boinc --gui_rpc_port N, example given boinc --gui_rpc_port 3, this starts
the BOINC client with TCP port 3.

If you don't want to use any GUI to check on this BOINC from a remote location,
you can also start BOINC without any GUI RPC:
boinc --no_gui_rpc

[Bug 1895157] [NEW] Boinc cannot enable RPC access to start client or manager

2020-09-10 Thread ikesterhaney
Public bug reported:

Boinc Manager and Boinc Client cannot start in Xubuntu 20.10 due to an RPC
issue.
Boinc Manager starts with a connection error - gui_rpc_auth.cfg exists but
cannot be read. Check the file permission. - The file is a link and flagged as
root/root in the var/lib/boinc and points to the /etc/boinc as root/boinc

a sudo boinc leads to the following messages on the terminal.

The left box offers both a selection of countries based on your language

The right box offers (for the countries where it makes sense -- namely
CA/US/MX), human-understandable timezones like Eastern, Central,
Mountain as well as the previous list of city-zones. Such choices
aren't reflected in map-clicks, which still use city-zones, but they are
 selectable through the dropbox.

I believe this hits the main point in this bug: desire to be able to
select zones in US as denizens know them (Pacific, Central, etc).

[Bug 228204] Re: bluetooth mouse and keyboard do not work with kde

2008-07-29 Thread ikesterhaney
It is a Logitech DiNovo Laser Bluetooth Combo kit.
The Logitech Bluetooth hub came with the set.
Unfortunately, I have installed open Suse in place of Kubuntu right now.
I am under the impression that this bug is in the KDE side of things. I guess
this got fixed upstream since the versionof KDE 4 I have installed right now
works fine.
I will run lusb tommorow under Open Suse and post the results.

[Bug 228204] [NEW] bluetooth mouse and keyboard do not work with kde

2008-05-08 Thread ikesterhaney
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-hal-device-manager

My Logitech Mouse and Keyboard do not work with KDE. The bt connection thing
says device at (hardware address) is connected, but wants to access files and
such on it. Having no files or such on my mouse and keyboard, I find this to
be ridiculous. The mouse and keyboard work fine for grub and the bios menus.
Only KDE seems to think that they are storage devices.
They work fine under other distributions, although I have not actually loaded
KDE in the other distributions yet.

[Bug 190492] Re: Kernel hangs on boot (SATA, AMD64/i386)

2008-05-06 Thread ikesterhaney
Is there any information about the cause of this bug? All these bugs
get named as duplicates of this one. I have not seen any progress
towards resolution of this problem. To clarify, if I use pci=nomsi I
get no hard disks. Ubuntu will not install. Something must be causing
this bug. If the AHCI driver does not work it should be fixed, or at
least mitigated so that we know if Ubuntu can be installed or not.

I only have SATA drives right now and the SATA drives are not accessible
with the nomsi option.

Could someone please look into the root cause of this issue?

Thank you.

All I get is the USB thumb drive.

I have the sis chipset, which conforms to the AHCI specification.

[Bug 103583] Re: Improve graphical timezone chooser, provide choice to enter actual timezones

2008-03-20 Thread ikesterhaney
The issue was a lack of cities in my particular region of the USA.
I know that I am in the USA/Central Timezone, yet there was no option to select
the timezone directly.
Also, selecting the City from the drop down list did not reveal the timezone it
was in.

My suggestion was that the drop down list should include the basic +/-
GMT hours and the USA/Central options.

[Bug 107651] Re: timezone selection differs alternate vs gaphical install

2007-04-22 Thread ikesterhaney
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 103583 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/103583

I don't remember the zoom option, this was the Ubuntu install disk by the way.
The zoneinfo has the entire list of CST and so forth. It is odd that they are
not
listed. I read the other bug report and while there are Central Time Zone
cities
listed, it is hard to select them. Most of the obvious choices end up in
Mexico,
Canada or Indiana. Indiana is a special case as some cities do not do Daylight
Savings Time.

Thank you,
Ian

[Bug 107651] timezone selection differs alternate vs gaphical install

2007-04-19 Thread ikesterhaney
Public bug reported:

When using the graphical installer, the timezones show up on a map of the world
The simple Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific timezones are not listed,
instead a bunch of red dots indicate cities with the corresponding timezone.
The cities are very sparse for my region, and the only way to select the
Central Zone
put me in Canada.
The alternate install lets me select from a list, the wacky cites are still
listed, however
Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific are actually listed. They are not
listed on the list
below the giant graphical map.

[Bug 107651] Re: timezone selection differs alternate vs gaphical install

2007-04-19 Thread ikesterhaney
Just wanted to put a few things out here.

The basic issue with the Ubiquity system is that many cities are not listed.
For instance, I live in Houston, TX which is a pretty big city, yet it is not
an option.
In fact, there are very few cities listed in the middle of the US on the map.
I can think of two possible solution.
   1. Add more cities
   2. Put the timezone dividers on the map
Other things that may help would be to allow a zoom-in on the map.
it is a little hard to tell where you are clicking.

Obviously, putting the EST, CST, MST and PST would help.

Thank you for accepting the bug,
   Ian
