Trying the ALSA and PULSE audio settings recommended on various sites had a
strange result: the volume icon and slider show the preset volume (~40%) after
boot, but the real, I mean audible volume is @ 100%. Simply clicking the volume
slider will set the volume right.
Another strange thing:

I have 12.10 running on a toshiba nb510 netbook with the intel graphics.
I also tested 13.04 and still have the same problem. Using compizconfig-ubuntu
unity plugin-experimental
one can change settings hide animation or dash blur (sorry forgot which setting
worked for me - running 12.04

Being quite new to ubuntu I have still to find my way around.
I am now using Evolution for my emailing and getting lots of unwanted
email. I would like to be able to block it or better still to have it
