Ok. Again I experience the same as kilroy. Didn't do anything special,
not even asoundrc but sound works perfectly including gdm login
window. Perhaps a regular update did the job already...

No sound in fresh Jaunty/Karmic install until disabling external amplifier
I can confirm the behaviour kilroy experiences. I did an upgrade from
9.04 to 9.10 immediatly after upgrade there was sound. After reboot no
sound. By toggling Amplifier sound starts. After reboot there is no
sound any more until toggling Amplifier again. I have to do that after
every reboot of
