[Bug 875564] Re: Compiz will not redraw anything, anywhere with nvidia-current
I don't think it's a problem with compiz nor nvidia-comon. The same happened to me this morning with upgrade. In the morning I was still on 10.10. from apt/history.log (I removed some packages like thunderbird from the list) : Upgrade: linux-image-2.6.35-30-generic:amd64 (2.6.35-30.60, 2.6.35-30.61), linux-generic:amd64 (2.6.35.30.38, 2.6.35.30.39), linux-headers-2.6.35-30-generic:amd64 (2.6.35-30.60, 2.6.35-30.61), tzdata-java:amd64 (2011j-0ubuntu0.10.10, 2011k-0ubuntu0.10.10), linux-headers-generic:amd64 (2.6.35.30.38, 2.6.35.30.39), linux-image-generic:amd64 (2.6.35.30.38, 2.6.35.30.39), linux-headers-2.6.35-30:amd64 (2.6.35-30.60, 2.6.35-30.61), ibpq-dev:amd64 (8.4.8-0ubuntu0.10.10, 8.4.9-0ubuntu0.10.10), tzdata:amd64 (2011j-0ubuntu0.10.10, 2011k-0ubuntu0.10.10), libpq5:amd64 (8.4.8-0ubuntu0.10.10, 8.4.9-0ubuntu0.10.10), linux-libc-dev:amd64 (2.6.35-1030.60, 2.6.35-1030.61), After that I tried nouveau, starting with older kernel, upgrade to natty, xorg-edgers ... Now i'm running on Safe mode desktop. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/875564 Title: Compiz will not redraw anything, anywhere with nvidia-current To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/875564/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 383345] Re: [i945gm] dual screen not working with virtual resolution enabled: just a blank screen with a mouse pointer
@Jakob: yes, the limit is 2048x2048 But 2048 is the maximum size of a texture. that means that texture CAN BE 2048. 2049 is 1px over the maximum. Anyone with 945 can test it with intrepid live CD. Compiz WILL WORK on 2048x786 dual screen. This bug is not about disabling compiz at 2048, but about some mathematical problem with maximum size of a texture. I'd bet somebody on i965 would have the same problem on 4096 size of a screen. -- [i945gm] dual screen not working with virtual resolution enabled: just a blank screen with a mouse pointer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/383345 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 383345] Re: [i945gm] dual screen not working with virtual resolution enabled: just a blank screen with a mouse pointer
@Laurens my comments 42-43 compiz works even on that 1px. In jaunty I was on my daily work on 1024+1024 with compiz. Since Karmic I use 1024+1280 without compiz. The switch from compiz to metacity on changed resolution is without problems (gnome always starts with black screen 2048, I have keyboard shortcut to 1024+1280 - xrandr). Kwin nearly always crashes the whole xserver on this resolution change. Sometimes (20%) it's succesfull in survival after compositing is auto turned off. The maximum size of a 3D texture on i915/i945 is 2048x2048px. Since compiz is one big texture, it is supposed to work on that resolution. (Somewhere I red, that compiz developers plan to make compiz multitextured. I that case also older HW would manage big resolutions. Don't ask me how. I just red it on some compiz blog.) -- [i945gm] dual screen not working with virtual resolution enabled: just a blank screen with a mouse pointer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/383345 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@milos your problem is unrelated. i8xx HW cannot display framebuffer larger then 2048x2048. It's a hardware limitation, not a system BUG. @Radomirs Please, at which combined resolution you get the black screen? @Andcor Please, what is your hardware? [Bug 383345] Re: [i945GM] dual screen not working with virtual resolution enabled: just a blank screen with a mouse pointer
@Radomirs: Please, before setting dual screen, disable desktop effects (compiz). Compiz cannot work at resolution higher that 2048x2048 (yet) on i915/945 hardware, limitation of HW 2048x2048 max texture size. Without Desktop effects your dual screen configuration should work. (it is then limited to 4096x4096 framebuffer size.) With Desktop effects and resolution 1024+1024, you probably will experience this BUG. @MJB-ESOFT: The same as Radomirs. @Andcor: Please disable desktop effects. Then attach external display. Do what yo do to activate it. Check combined screen resolution. If it is 2040 width, then it is this BUG. If it is larger, then the same as Radomir. If lower, then different BUG. -- [i945GM] dual screen not working with virtual resolution enabled: just a blank screen with a mouse pointer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/383345 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

As the release of Karmic nears, this bug gets spookier :) (imagine the number of forum questions :) ) So I prepared for you 2 videos: http://launchpad.jay.cz/intel-compiz-pixel3.avi http://launchpad.jay.cz/intel-compiz-pixel4-zoom.avi (1280x720, xvid, 60MB and 40MB) (because of the size, I left it on my page) I think, this could be the main lead to track the problem. [Bug 383345] Re: [i945GM] dual screen not working with virtual resolution enabled: just a blank screen with a mouse pointer
I had an idea :) Do desktop effects work in that garbaged state? Yes they work. In that one pixel I could see, changes of opacity, wobbly windows ... That means that bug is somewhere, in manipulation with 3D texture and sending it to display. And if I take into consideration, that even older intel driver (deb package) doesn't help anymore (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/383345/comments/36 ), I'd say, that there were two bugs in game. One in intel driver - black/white screen with moving mouse (didn't have that special one pixel). That is fixed. And one in mesa/3D (I believe), or xserver - the garbaged screen with texture cropped to 1px. Message is flooding my logs since then. That time I was using 2.6.27 on intrepid. Then short time 2.6.28 on jaunty. Currently 2.6.30-9 from https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa (on jaunty) (I will update to 2.6.30-10 but I'm convinced it will not help.) I tryed also server and rt versions of kernel. A plead to package maintainer: Please confirm what is the root of the problem. intel drivers? -then why does ubuntu display settings work. xrandr code? For it looks like, the developers made some big change in driver, and xrandr didn't count with that. Also I believe that grandr and ubuntu display settings are using underlying libraries of xrandr, and not xrandr binary (as arandr does). [Bug 383345] Re: [i945GM] dual screen not working with virtual resolution enabled: just a blank screen with a mouse pointer
Hi, Confirming this bug. Running on https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa (newest xorg, intel driver and kernel) (so only UXA and DRI2) I have some xrandr configurations bind to keyboard shortcuts, so it's easy for me to test without restarts. Without compiz, everything works (curently running 2048x768 dual). Even resolutions greater than 2048x2048. With compiz: 1. xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1024x768 --primary --output VGA --mode 1024x768 --right-of LVDS Black or corrupt screen (but mouse shows it is in correct resolutions next to each other). 2. xrandr --output LVDS --mode 800x600 --primary --output VGA --mode 1024x768 --right-of LVDS WORKS 3. xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1024x768 --primary --output VGA --mode 800x600 --right-of LVDS WORKS 4. xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1024x768 --primary --output VGA --mode 1024x768 --same-as LVDS WORKS 5. xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1024x768 --primary --output VGA --mode 1360x768 --above LVDS WORKS - today morning worked :) For compiz settings loose bindings or indirect rendering in any configuration have no effect. Tested xserver-xorg-video-intel - 2:2.7.99.1+git20090528.704771f1-0ubuntu0morgwai1~jaunty1 No change. Tested kernels 2.6.30-9 and 2.6.30-8 with no difference. X log shows nothing interesting. [Bug 296825] Re: [intel] xserver lockup, mouse movable, sound in loop, SysRq unusable
I'm sorry it took so long, lets explain. After jaunty upgrade NonSteam CS dropped to 4 FPS and Steam CS didn't even care to start. (with EXA. XAA didn't start X, and UXA was crashing few minutes after desktop start) Today I found xorg-edgers https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa Finally is my desktop fast and usable. Unexpectedly also stable. But Steam errors, not even interface starts. And NonSteam crashes xorg immediately. So you can close this bug. It's impossible to debug it. Proppably usefull information: crash is independend of wine graphic settings vertex shader and pixel shader. Still freezes. Game did not crash in map without wall textures. There were just single color walls. After switching to a map with full textures. Lockup was inevitable. ** Description changed: Short description: xserver freeze. Total. Mouse is movable, but anything with keyboard (change to VT1, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Ctrl-Alt-Del, Alt-SysRq-B, or anything) is dead. Sound is in a short (0.5-1 sec) loop. CPU is on max (I hear the fan on max). Absolutely sure way to reproduce any time is to run Steam Counter strike online under wine. Within 3 minutes lockup. Long desc: Around a year ago, I had similiar lockups with compiz, but that time Alt-SysRq-B worked always , some workarounds worked. After the move to hardy, no more lockups any kind. Until this weekend. I instaled (in clean .wine enviroment) Steam Counter strike pack. Local game works (both CS 1.6 and CS:Condition Zero). But after logging onto an online server, freeze every time. (not immediately, but after around 20sec-3minutes). Nonsteam version of CS never had any problem. (I'm running game with compiz turned off). Here on launchpad are very very similiar bugs (a thought they are the same) Fixed in intrepid. So sunday I upgraded. Now I still have CounterStrike lockups, But now I have also a lower performance of compiz and already had 2 compiz lockups. (plus many other desktop related problems. Bugs that are filled with 965 seem to have the little things different, but maybe its not so much HW related, and it was just another bug. A have read about similiar bug also on non intel cards. Could by mesa or kernel related. Hardware: Fujitsu siemens T4210 Intel graphics 945GM/GMS Debug: * Untrap signals from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing * rebooted in single user mode * emptyed /var/logs * normal reboot * echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug * lockup with countestrike * boot in single user mode * copied /var/log I have no Idea how to strace or gbd a hardlocked pc, so not included. Included: whole /var/log (a lot of informations) lspci -vvnn xorg.conf If you need any info, debug, testing, I'm availiable. I will continue to search for any sollution or workaround. PS: just because I test crashes with counterstrike, it doesn't mean it schould go to wishlist or low priority. I haven't yet tryed vmware, graphic apps or intensive video play. But two compiz lockups say there will be a problem. ** Affects: mesa (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- xserver lockup, mouse movable, sound in loop, SysRq unusable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296825 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
