[Bug 826864] [NEW] Grid plugin + xterm = no size cycling

2011-08-15 Thread jmcantrell
Public bug reported:

When doing window placement, pressing the hotkey in succession cycles
the window sizes. With xterm, it jumps to the first size (50%, I think),
and subsequent presses do nothing.

I'm using Ubuntu Natty with gnome classic, but I'm fairly certain it
does this in unity, as well.

[Bug 544812] [NEW] LUKS encrypted partition does not mount during boot

2010-03-22 Thread jmcantrell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cryptsetup

This happens in Ubuntu Lucid (development branch) 10.04 fully updated.
Cryptsetup version: 2:1.1.0~rc2-1ubuntu12

I have this in /etc/crypttab:

crypt_home UUID=... none luks

And this in /etc/fstab:

/dev/mapper/crypt_home /home ext4 defaults 0 2

During boot, I get prompted for my password. I get no error message, but
I also get no Successfully unlocked slot... message. It just hangs

[Bug 301593] Re: network-manager-pptp lacks refuse-eap option in advanced ... dialog

2008-11-24 Thread jmcantrell
@Alexander Sack:

When you set an encryption level other than the default, it would unset
require-mppe and add require-mppe-128 (or require-mppe-40). If you
close the dialog and reopened it, it wouldn't recognize the require-
mppe-128/40, and the widget for the require mppe checkbox would be
unchecked. If you closed it again, it would save the unchecked state and
wipe out all mppe settings. The simplest solution that I saw was to make
it write both require-mppe and the specific encryption setting.

[Bug 298312] [NEW] /etc/X11/rgb.txt is missing

2008-11-15 Thread jmcantrell
Public bug reported:

On my fresh install of Intrepid, I began noticing various programs
complaining that they didn't understand certain color names. I saw some
things that pointed me toward a problem with the rgb.txt file. My system
only had one rgb.txt which was in /usr/share/X11/rgb.txt which was a
broken symlink to /etc/X11/rgb.txt. Using apt-file, I was able to
determine that /usr/share/X11/rgb.txt is provided by x11-common, which

[Bug 259168] Re: Network Manager unable to connect to PPTP VPN

2008-11-11 Thread jmcantrell
Folks, I think we all need to take a deep breath and come to some
painful realizations.

If you're looking for the most rock-solid Ubuntu experience, then you
should stick with the LTS releases. The last one was Hardy Heron. Using
the non-LTS releases, you have to understand that they're going to be a
bit more bleeding edge. At the very least, you should wait to verify
that packages which are critical to you are not broken before upgrading.

I've personally been using Ubuntu since Warty Warthog (4.10) for both my
desktop environment and several servers. I've used every version since.
My experience has been that Ubuntu has done nothing but improve with
every version. Sure, there are some regressions, but the overall trend
is upward.

Bottom line: If you want the latest and greatest, you should be prepared
for some headaches.

[Bug 236888] Re: GDM does not start gnome-session when logging in

2008-07-29 Thread jmcantrell
Currently hardy, but it was also present in gutsy. There's no errors,
per se. I just don't think it should be done this way. I can login fine,
everything appears to work correctly, but there's no process for gnome-
session. It doesn't appear that it's ever started. Like I said, I can
work around using .xinitrc, and it's not a critical issue, by any means.

[Bug 236888] [NEW] GDM does not start gnome-session when logging in

2008-06-02 Thread jmcantrell
Public bug reported:

when logging in through GDM, I don't see a gnome-session process.
everything appears to load fine, but this causes probems when using
remote desktop apps like nomachine (nx, freenx). I can workaround this
by using a .xinitrc and exec'ing gnome-session from there instead of the
default option in gdm.

Re: [Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-13 Thread jmcantrell
i'm sorry, i completely disagree. user-space tools should not be
polluting the rest of the system. having a directory, like /tmp, that
is writable by everyone is not the same thing as having a directory
that is owned by some specific user.

not to mention, i may have my home folder permissions set so that i'm
the only one that can read files. if i mount some share with fuse, i'm
expecting it to be just as protected as any of my other files, whereas
if it were in something like /media, it would likely not be.

the reason why the file system hierarchy is so nice is because i know
(as the one who has root access to a particular machine) that all
files related to a particular user are going to be in that user's home
folder (as defined in /etc/passwd), instead of spread out all over the
system.

every goofy enhancement that comes along, i am close minded? wow...
and since we're on the topic, i actually find the automatic creation

wants a music directory, is it really that difficult to just create

Re: [Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-12 Thread jmcantrell
I think that ~/.gvfs is an appropriate location for fuse mounts. If
you want them to be more visible, then do: ln -s .gvfs Volumes. To
have gvfs create a real directory called Volumes in the home folder
doesn't seem like the right thing to do. To have it mount them in
/Volumes is definitely not the right thing to do. It violates the
linux filesystem hierarchy standard, which, i hope, is still followed.
Linux is not OSX, thankfully. Also, being that it's a user-space tool,
it only belongs in the home folder.

Re: [Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-12 Thread jmcantrell
i could go into a rant about capitalization and whitespace in system
paths, but i'll save that for another day. there is already a
directory for system level mountpoints. it's called /mnt. the ubuntu
equivalent to mac's /Volumes appears to be /media. i'm not exactly
clear on what the difference is, other than gnome/nautilus sees one
and not the other.

we've already established that mounting user-space volumes outside of
the home folder is a no-no. exposing the mount points as a visible
directory in the home directory does not exactly follow with the gnome
standard. it doesn't exactly fit with what I, personally, would want,
but if you were following gnome's lead, it would have the volumes
visible on the desktop (similar to other mounted volumes), which could
be turned on/off via gconf editor
(/apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible). this whole business about
whether or not to create a symlink to ~/.gvfs seems pretty pointless.
If you want the link, create it.. if not, don't.

also, i don't mean to be a party pooper, but does any of this
discussion have anything to do with the big hairy wart of a bug that
this thread is supposed to be about. if you ask me, this bug is more
detrimental to the user experience than whether or not we can see the
volumes in our home folder.

[Bug 225432] [NEW] nautilus's Open With context menu is short by one item

2008-05-01 Thread jmcantrell
Public bug reported:

Nautilus always shows one item less than it should in the Open With
context menu. I first noticed this when trying to associate an
application with a directory. Looking at
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list shows that all of the correct
apps are there. For example, if I have a line in mimeapps.list that
looks like:

inode/directory=totem.desktop;exfalso.desktop;gthumb.desktop;

Only exfalso, and gthumb would show in the menu. If I add another item
to the beginning of this list, totem shows up, but the first item is
always missing.

I should note that if you go to Properties in nautilus and then to
Open With tab, it shows all of the correct items there.

It almost feels like a fencepost error, but I can't find any evidence of
that. I got as far as the function
nautilus_mime_get_applications_for_file in libnautilus-private
/nautilus-mime-actions.c in the package nautilus-2.22.2, but I don't
know enough about the project or the best way to debug it.

[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-04-27 Thread jmcantrell
i am seeing the same behavior... transport endpoint is not connected.
is there anything that i can disable to get this to go away? i don't use
windows shares.

i ended up creating a shell script called gnome-session in my bin
folder that unmounts the folder first, then runs the real gnome-session.
my xinitrc runs this wrapper script instead, which seems to fix this.
the advantage being that it works with any display manager and with
nomachine.

[Bug 162676] Network manager (nm-applet) asks for keyring password after login or resume

2007-11-14 Thread jmcantrell
Public bug reported:

On a completely fresh install of Gutsy on an IBM Thinkpad T43, network
manager stores the network key in the keyring, but on the first login
after a boot or after resuming, nm-applet prompts for the keyring
password. Others have said that I should have a remember the password
permanently option, but this is not present (it is present in other
things, though). In feisty, I used libpam-keyring, but it's my
understanding that similar functionality was integrated into gutsy,
eliminating the need for it. The libpam-keyring package is available in
gutsy as a virtual package, and installing it appears to do nothing. If
manually installing the libpam-keyring package from feisty will work, I
have no problem doing that, but I haven't tried this, and I would prefer
that this work without the need for that.

perfectly. Please mark this as resolved. Thanks!
