[Bug 1875025] Re: Cannot enter password to unlock session

2021-11-04 Thread joshyg6
Can one remove or disable xscreensaver, but leave xfce4-screensaver?
What are the consequences doing so? What are the steps to do so?

[Bug 1274332] [NEW] Print to File with File Renamed from Output.pdf Doesn't work

2014-01-29 Thread joshyg6
Public bug reported:

When you are on a webpage, for instance in Chrome, and you select print,
print to file, and then select a folder in which to save a .pdf output,
you can only save the file as output.pdf, and THEN rename the file to a
name you prefer. If you type a different name than output.pdf, the cups
package does not print anything to file at all. Just closes and exits.
In previous updates and versions, however, you could easily type
whatever your desired print to file file name, and then have the file be
printed to that file name .pdf. Strange!

Tried the ppa to see if it fixed problem per recommendation of your
previous comments and the referenced similar bug.. Did not fix it.. And
upgrading to the 3.7 kernel also breaks all the wireless modules.. which
aren't seemingly updated yet..

 ** Description changed:

 + ATTENTION*
+ THIS BUG HAS BEEN MARKED AS FIXED AND THE ISSUE HAS BEEN RESOLVED.
+ ANYONE EXPERIENCING THESE SYMPTOMS ON A COMPLETELY UP-TO-DATE SYSTEM
 SHOULD LOG A NEW BUG:
 +
 + 'ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel'
 +
+ PLEASE REFRAIN FROM UNNECESSARY COMMENTS. THANKS!
 + ATTENTION*
 +
   [Impact]:

severe, compiz hangs frequently after resuming from suspend or the
   screensaver

   [Testcase]:

   - grab xserver-xorg-video-intel from quantal
   - build it from the extracted directory
   - after the build run 'cd test make dri2-swap'
   - log in X
   - start two terminals
   - get dpms.sh from this bug, run it in the other terminal
   - on the other run ./dri2-swap

compiz should hang during the first couple of runs of dri2-swap

with the fixed package, it doesn't

   [Regression potential]

To ease the backporting, I did replace patch 101 with the commit that
was pulled upstream. This patch is needed for smooth transition from
plymouth to X. There _could_ be some issues with it (meaning additional
patches needed from upstream), but it seems to be working just fine for
   me.

The precise upload has another upstream fix for an issue referenced in
bug 992391, it should be safe.

   ---

This bug is about problems after resume, with Intel video hardware and
i965_dri.so. If you're having these symptoms with other hardware,
Nvidia or ATI/Radeon, this isn't the place for reports or questions.

[Those comments are building up, so brief links to direct other people
to appropriate bugs might be good here, if anyone has them. Thanks.]

This happens intermittently. Sometimes upon resume, all I see is a black
screen and the cursor. the mouse and keyboard respond (the mouse moves)
but nothing changes. Switching to console and back doesn't fix it.
Killing Compiz also does not fix the issue. Further, if one has password
lock disabled on resume the user will be stuck with a frozen display of
whatever was last shown on the screen before suspend. The mouse cursor
still changes as you hover over various elements but the display is
frozen solid. One can switch to another TTY via ctrl+alt+F1 but killing
the X session is the only way to get back to the desktop.

Attempts to replace compiz have been fruitless. Trying the 3.4 kernel
also did not fix the issue.

BTW, I haven nothing connected to the laptop when I resume and before
suspend. This is a very annoying issue because the only way to recover
is to reboot, which means all the open files will be lost.

   [UPDATE]
It was discovered that switching to a tty, killing compiz, then invoking
'metacity --replace' would successfully switch over to metacity. Attempting
to invoke 'compiz --replace' afterwards would put the state right back
where it was (frozen screen, etc.) and output error messages saying
something similar to invalid configuration, this should never happen, you
should probably raise a bug report about it. After killing Compiz again
and invoking compiz --replace yet again I can get basic window management
back (though unity --replace still does not work as it whines about unclean
exit states). So one still needs to start over again to get it all
 functioning properly.

[Bug 990129] Re: Suspend/Resume hangs and fails - Ubuntu 12.04LTS

2013-01-01 Thread joshyg6
On 3.5--- here too, and still happens.. Works once, and then doesn't
work in following suspends/resumes.. Keeps giving read error i/o error
swap error.. It's not the HD, though. Works fine with Windows. Totally a
kernel bug.. Why can't the resume/suspend be written to be so much more
failsafe than this? Very basic functionality indeed.. Big time problem..

Maybe it has to do with using the swap disk when in suspend mode?

[Bug 1086893] Re: SATA hard failure per every other reboot

2012-12-23 Thread joshyg6
Same problem - coming back from resume, hibernate, suspend, after one
good resume.. Subsequent resumes fail with end_request i/o errors.. Is
it swap disk related? This did not happen a few iterations before
12.xx.. I believe it was all right in 11.xx.. But a kernel update
definitely created this issue in my opinion.. Also, nothing wrong with
hd, although that was at first a concern and possibility. Tested, and
seems fine in Windows and with other tool examinations.

Did anyone come up with a solution or workaround or idea to test?

I ran the command.. It should be attached to this bug.. It still
exists..

christopher.penal...@gmx.com wrote:
joshyg6, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

 apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in
the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested
the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
 tested and remove the tag:
 needs-upstream-testing

This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag
located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the text:
 needs-upstream-testing

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
 kernel-fixed-upstream
 kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why
specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
 kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
 kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

 Title:
Various people have a bunch of unrelated problems with name resolution
  in Ubuntu 12.04

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

 Bug description:
I just updated to Ubuntu 12.04.
After the update I cannot resolve hostnames reliably:
I use Konsole in Unity. There sometimes the DNS resolving works fine and
suddenly after two commands or so it fails for the same address.

E.g. I ping a machine without DNS-Suffix (the suffix is shown in my network
config correctly aside 3 valid nameserver IPs) and everything works fine.
Then I try to log into the machine with the same address via ssh and I get a
 Name or service not known.
Trying again, it works with a fully qualified name containing the suffix. I
also had cases, when the IP wasn't resolved although I put in the fully
qualified name. When I am more lucky, it starts working again with machine
names only (without suffix, which is configured and worked perfectly up to
 now)

Is there probably a bug in the new Ubuntu Version?

[Bug 1025858] [NEW] Pavucontrol does NOT activate microphone

2012-07-17 Thread joshyg6
Public bug reported:

I open the pavucontrol program. I go to input devices. I adjust the
input levels of the desired mic. But I don't see any blue line movement
with audio sound stimulus. However, I go to a program like skype or
google chat, and test a call, and as soon as those programs activate the
microphone, the blue line starts responding to stimulus fine.
Pavucontrol seems NOT to activate the microphone, so you can't see if
your settings adjustments have worked!

 Please exercise the steps at
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting to determine at which
level your hotkey problems occur, and attach the collected information.
Most probably the keys will produce an unknown or wrong key code with
the keymap tool, in which case you need to follow
/usr/share/doc/udev/README.keymap.txt.gz to determine the scan code -
key code mapping for the broken/missing keys.

 Thank you!

I don't have Intrepid anymore, but only Jaunty and its kernel currently
does not ship the quickcam driver. But I'm quite sure the current behaviour

though it was wrong) and which change caused it to stop working, but I can't
remember that right now and I don't have the time to look it up again.
So I don't think all that info is actually needed, since it should be

Re: [Bug 283759] Re: rt73usb intrepid 8.10 beta -- wireless connection periodically lost; must restart driver

2008-11-10 Thread joshyg6
installing linux-backports-modules-'versionname' permanently fixed the
issue for me... i think 'cause it's a more recent rt2x00 and rt73usb
compilation from serialmonkey included... ??? so says some of the
posts by the serialmonkey authors..

[Bug 283759] Re: rt73usb intrepid 8.10 beta -- wireless connection periodically lost; must restart driver

2008-10-23 Thread joshyg6
OOOH I THINK I FOUND A PROVISIONAL SOLUTION! It seems that using the
linux-backports-modules-'versionname' does the trick, and uses a more
recent rt73usb/rt2x00 driver set/library which doesn't have the issues
anymore!! so said serialmonkey as well, that it could use a more
recent driver set with that module.. what do you think??

[Bug 284153] Re: KOPETE crashes on 8.10 INTREPID when vieweing Settings, Configure..

2008-10-20 Thread joshyg6
this continues to occur. every time one opens kopete, clicks settings,
then configure.. then the window pops up.. one mouses over the various
selections on the left, and the drop shadow follows accordingly for
about 5 seconds, and then soon enough, the background windows go
dark/shadowed (as if freezing), and the program freezes completely --
only to be rectified by a kill signal from the cli..

[Bug 268134] Re: qc-usb driver does not work anymore with 2.6.27-2.3

2008-10-20 Thread joshyg6
I can confirm a similar problem. I don't know how to apply and use this
patch, however? Should we all be using this patch, and will it fix the
issue?

I have a Quickcam Logitech Express 046d:0870, 2.26-27-7 Linux, Intrepid
8.10, and similar DMESG lines..

Please advise, or tell me what more information you need from me!

Even works on 8.04, actually, or at least, according to how it works on
my laptop which has 8.04 (instead of the Desktop which has 8.10)..

People seem to think this is related to the IP STACK.. as in it's a
deeper problem than just the drivers driving the wireless connections...
What do you all think

[Bug 285592] Re: KONVERSATION keeps disconnecting me from the irc.ubuntu.com even though i have a fine internet connection!!

2008-10-19 Thread joshyg6
was using intrepid 8.10, not 8.04.

1. opened konversation. it gives the motd. i identify. then it lags, and it
eventually cuts out/reconnects. (internet http seems fine at the moment.)
2. the regular channels i have bookmarked and set to auto-open to open. none
did. nor did my identity get successfully accepted, nor did i retain a
connection to the irc channel/server..
3. see 1. there's really no more detail i could see/discern, unless you can
suggest some info/specifically how to get it..

i've heard of their being possibly something awry with the ip stack and
how it deals with irc communication? there is also definitely a wireless
internet issue -- or general networking issue -- which has been noted in
some of my other bugs encountered, related for instance to rt73usb..
etc..

[Bug 285404] Re: ubuntu intrepid -- crazy annoying system sound (not beep, but alert-like sound) over and over!!!

2008-10-18 Thread joshyg6
so today i just got a msg that the gnome-sound something crashed... i
would include all the information, but when the system crash handler
went to report it, firefox wasn't running, and so when i ran firefox,
it didnt re-display all the information.. IMPORTANT THAT CRASH HANDLER
BE FIXED THAT WAY, so that it holds in memory the report, or can save it
somewhere on your hd, and then you can upload it to the launchpad, you
know! anyway, so gnome-sound something crashed, and it said it had
to do with libcanberra???
