[Bug 1741509] Re: Thunderbolt updates on Dell systems fail to apply if nothing connected

2018-01-17 Thread Joss Smith
It works for me (Ubuntu 17.10, Dell XPS 13 9360).

Applied fwupd update using aptitude. Rebooted. Nothing plugged into
thunderbolt port. Applied Thunderbolt update via Software Center.

Hi Doug - wow this original bug report was a long time ago! I don't think
i have ever had to do this same action again, but thanks for letting me
know the solution.

[Bug 696232] Re: Incomplete support for Apple Aluminium Keyboard

2011-04-18 Thread Joss Winn
I've just upgraded to Natty Beta2 and have run into what appears to be
the same bug. The number pad is not working and some key mappings are
incorrect (hash, pound sign).

Previously, my Apple aluminium keyboard worked fine when the right
options were set in the Gnome keyboard preferences. However, since the
upgrade, I'm getting a warning whenever I login or try to change the
keyboard preferences. The error message is asking me to run to commands
if reporting a bug:

root@jwinn-desktop:~# xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = evdev, applealu_iso, gb, mac,
terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,apple:alupckeys,numpad:mac
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = evdev, applealu_iso, gb, mac,

root@jwinn-desktop:~# gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
 layouts = []
 model =
 options = [terminate   terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,apple   apple:alupckeys,numpad
numpad:mac,compat apple:alupckeys,compat numpad:mac]

I have xkeyboard-config (2.1-1ubuntu3) installed.

Thanks for your help.

[Bug 658755] Re: Samsung N230 with xubuntu 10.10 fresh installed does not resume after suspend

2011-03-11 Thread Joss Wright
This seems to be a kernel issue, and to have a workaround. See:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/640100?comments=all

In short, adding intel_idle.max_cstate=0 to the kernel boot options (in
/etc/default/grub) will resolve this problem. More details at the link
above.

(It works for me, based on a few tries.)

[Bug 658755] Re: Samsung N230 with xubuntu 10.10 fresh installed does not resume after suspend

2011-01-02 Thread Joss Wright
As someone who is also having this problem, I can confirm that the
problem is definitely not just a display issue.

Two cases:
1) Play an audio file and suspend whilst playing. On resume, no audio will be
heard.
2) Try to ssh into the machine after resume. The machine will not be found on
the network.

I haven't been able to get anything useful from the logs that I can see
on my machine. For the moment my only workaround is to hibernate the
machine on lid-close rather than suspend.

Re: [Bug 257025] Re: mint 5 kde beta 045 installer crashes

2008-08-12 Thread richard joss
Sorry mate but I have binned this dreadful version of what was a decent bit
of software before it got hooked up to Kubuntu/Ubiquity. I have no intention
of trying to install it again.

The crash of PartMan completely trashed my hard disk, making it impossible
to boot the previously installed version of Linux Mint 5 Gnome. This is in
spite of the fact that I never made any choices when the Partition Manager
had run. It showed my HDD as having no partitions, even though I knew there
were three partitions (root, swap and home). I just cancelled the install at
that point, but still found it had trashed the HDD. Using a live CD I found
that fdisk could not even open /dev/sda and even qparted said no device
found.

So thanks to whoever for hours of downloading a crappy dvd only to have it
trash my HDD.

[Bug 74394] Re: power.sh should allow laptop_mode to do it's thing

2008-07-11 Thread Joss Winn
Running Hardy on a Dell D430.

I've installed the laptop-mode-tools upstream deb package from the
maintainer's website on his suggestion. It's seems to be widely
acknowledged that good laptop power management in Ubuntu is broken.

With the upstream Debian package, things appear to be working but I'm
unsure what power.sh should now look like when using laptop-mode for
power management. Most people suggest commenting out/removing the hdparm
commands and changing $LAPTOP_MODE to auto.

Can anyone confirm that all that is needed is:

function laptop_mode_enable {
$LAPTOP_MODE auto
}

Thank you
Joss

[Bug 241867] Re: Display brightness requires manual intervention

2008-06-24 Thread Joss Winn
Brightness control works before the OS is loaded. i.e. I can use the Fn
keys to increase/decrease brightness at the bios screen before the OS
loads. If I do increase it to 100%, the OS decreases the display
brightness around the time the acpi video driver is loading. You're
right, it's clearly unrelated and independent of X.

I don't have access to the laptop right now but I'm pretty sure there's
no brightness settings in the bios. Will confirm and attach logs later.

Thanks

I've blacklisted the video module and the screen does not noticeably dim
on boot. However, the Fn key controls no longer work and nor does
display dimming on battery power. I get better functionality with the
video module loaded, despite the reported problem above. The Thinkpad

I've attached the logs when the video module is blacklisted.

[Bug 241867] Re: Display brightness requires manual intervention

2008-06-22 Thread Joss Winn
Yes, you're right. I just booted up in recovery mode and around the time
the screen dimmed, I saw something about acpi video fly up the screen.
Where are these boot time messages logged?

After booting up, I have this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/LCD/brightness
levels: 100 57 0 14 28 43 57 71 86 100
current: 0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

If I use the Fn keys to increase the brightness to 100, I get this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/LCD/brightness
levels: 100 57 0 14 28 43 57 71 86 100
current: 100
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

If I unplug the AC power, I get this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/LCD/brightness
levels: 100 57 0 14 28 43 57 71 86 100
current: 43
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

When I plug AC power back in, I get this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/LCD/brightness
levels: 100 57 0 14 28 43 57 71 86 100
current: 86
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

And when I unplug it again:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/LCD/brightness
levels: 100 57 0 14 28 43 57 71 86 100
current: 28
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

and plug it in:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/LCD/brightness
levels: 100 57 0 14 28 43 57 71 86 100
current: 71
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

So, you can see, it's incrementally decreasing every time I unplug AC.

So, for me, there's two problems:

1. On boot, brightness is dimmed to 0
2. Unplugging AC repeatedly, incrementally decreases the display brightness.

Each problem can be overcome by using the Fn keys after boot and
plugging AC back in, but it's clearly not how it should work.

Thanks for any help with this. Please point me to logs or anything I can
do help debug it further.

Joss

[Bug 241867] [NEW] Display brightness requires manual intervention

2008-06-21 Thread Joss Winn
Public bug reported:

I first reported this as bug #214440, thinking it was gnome-power-
manager related. It's not. The display automatically dims on boot when
drivers are being loaded, before any Gnome stuff is introduced. Please
see that bug for some log output.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-
manager/+bug/214440

I can control display brightness using the keyboard but the settings in
Power Manager preferences, seem to be ignored. For example, when I
unplug the AC power, the screen dims, but when I plug it back in again,
the screen notifier shows the brightness increasing to about 90% (it is
set to be 100% on AC power) but in fact the screen remains dimmed and
does not actually increase. If I unplug the AC power again, the display
brightness decreases and so on until after unplugging the AC power four
times, the display brightness is at its lowest level and plugging in AC
power makes no difference to the actual brightness. I can rectify this
by using the FN-F11 keys.

I'm running the latest Hardy updates on a Lenovo 3000 N100 Centrino Duo.
I've attached some logs. This is not a recent problem but started
occurring a few months ago.

Thanks for any help solving this.

[Bug 159421] Re: ATA exception on resume from sleep

Hello,

I think I may be experiencing this or a similar bug. It's been
occurring on random occasions over the last few months when my Lenovo
3000 N100 laptop has been waking from Sleep under Hardy. I'm currently
running Hardy with the latest updates and it happened again this
morning.

On wake from sleep, I get a console screen with a very rapidly repeating
error message (transcribed - incomplete):

ata1.00: status {DRDY ERR}
   error {ABRT}
   exception Emask
   BMDMA
   CMD

I have to power off the machine to overcome this error.

Please let me know what else I can do to help. The problem is, that this
seems to occur randomly, so it's difficult to know when it will occur
next.

Thank you

[Bug 211322] [NEW] network manager fails to find wireless network after suspend

2008-04-03 Thread joss
Public bug reported:

For the last week or so, whenever I've suspended and resumed my laptop,
network-manager has failed to pick up the wireless network again. I've

[Bug 178491] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] spreadsheet editing email addresses

2008-03-30 Thread richard joss
Hope this is the right place to add a comment. I am using openoffice
2.3 under simplymepis 7.0 - which i presume uses the ubuntu package. If
I type an email address into a cell in Calc - it changes colour to blue
with a grey background and then refuses to allow any editing. I cannot
even highlet/select the cell!! It has also added the typed address into
each cell as around 3-4 point when the column is clearly formatted for
12 point. Then when I try to print, it prints the whole page as 4 point
which is unreadable!! This cannot be changed anywhere - it makes Calc
UNUSABLE for any file that has email addresses in it. Come on guys this
is more than a LOW priority!!!

2008-03-30 Thread richard joss
OK - a possible quick workaround for this bug. Hover mouse over the
cell with an email address in it and RIGHT click. If you are lucky you
will get a Default Formatting option. Click on this and it will
change the formatting to the default for the rest of the document. It
can then be edited. Well worked for me!

BTW - I can send you an example of a spreadsheet with this problem if
you want to see one...

[Bug 182682] First instance of video playback is corrupted, subsequent playback ok

2008-01-13 Thread joss
Public bug reported:

When I launch a video in any application (totem, totem-xine, xfmedia,
VLC, etc) it runs with corrupted picture colour (the colours are
extremely luminous bright, although everything else appears ok).
However, when a subsequent video playback is made whilst the first is
still playing (either using the same application as the first, or a
differnt one), the playback is fine. So long as one video file is open,
the others seem to work ok.

I have tried a miriad drivers, video playback applications, plugins, and
config settings without success.

I have been unable to get any assistance from the Ubuntu forums. System
info is as follows. If anymore information is required, please let me
know.

Thanks.

[Bug 67788] Re: WEP Key for one SSID carries over to all SSIDs

2008-01-10 Thread joss
Just a comment to confirm I have the same issues setting up 2 WPA
wireless locations in Ubuntu Xubuntu 7.10. All the locations info (IP
address/ESSID/etc) is correctly saved recalled for each location, but
the PSK is not. Problem seems to be entirely within Network Manager.

[Bug 164910] Tracker not searching content of rtf files

2007-11-24 Thread joss
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

I have an .rtf file and a .pdf version of the same file. The rtf file is
older. Tracker only finds the pdf file when searching for a word in the
document.

Tracker does find the file when searching for the file name:
'joss_winn_cv'

Tracker doesn't find the file when I search for 'cv' - are search
expressions limited to more than two letters?

When tracker finds the rtf file by searching for the file title, it does
not display any of the content.

[Bug 164265] Re: Transferring AAC files to iPod is broken

2007-11-22 Thread joss
I can see mine are mp3 just by looking at the properties of one of the
files I've transferred to the ipod in the rythmnbox ipod window. Also,
when I delete those files from the ipod and look in my Trash, they are
all .mp3 files - the original library tracks are .m4a files, encoded
using iTunes.

[Bug 164265] Re: Transferring AAC files to iPod is broken

2007-11-21 Thread joss
I've noticed this. Rhythmbox transcodes my m4a files to mp3 when moving
it to an ipod. I'd really like to just *copy* my m4a files to my ipod.
They don't need to be transcoded to mp3.

[Bug 163654] Re: Tracker search not showing indexed files

2007-11-19 Thread joss
There's plenty of files indexed as shown below, but the search tools
don't seem to be picking them up. If I use the GUI search too, and
search for 'joss', I get 166 emails returned. That's all. With the
command line, I get nothing.

[Bug 159368] network connection stops

2007-11-01 Thread joss
Public bug reported:

For the last two days, my network connection has been stopping randomly.
The gnome network manager shows the wireless is connected and the router
and other PCs in the house can browse the web fine. The Gutsy laptop
can't ping to anywhere or browse the web. If I reboot the laptop, the
connection comes back. When the network is dead, if I right-click on
the nm-applet and stop networking and then start it again, I can browse
the web again. I don't think it's losing the connection to my router as
my connection to the router *appears* to be OK according to nm-applet.
However, I can't blame it on the router as other PCs are networking OK.

I have the latest Gutsy updates installed. Have been following Gutsy
updates for the last two months.

Thanks.

Hello,

[Bug 141248] Re: screen and graphics preferences doesn't quite work

2007-10-06 Thread joss
It doesn't work for me either. Doesn't allow me to save any settings. My
display is fine but this application seems irrelevant to setting up my
display. I'm running the latest Gutsy release. If this application is
part of the default Gutsy install, users will expect it to work. I'm
using a Lenovo 300 N100, a popular laptop for linux. If I can help,
please let me know.

When I open 'Screen and Graphics', my set up is configured as:

Screen 1:
Model: Custom 1
Resolution: 640x480
at 60hz
Graphics Card: intel (this is correct)

When I try to detect card, it goes to Plug n' Play.

I select widescreen since it's a 1280 x 800 LCD display.

When I try to save this, I get the notification that a Crash report has
been detected.

When I try to select a resolution under the plug n' play monitor, the
resolution and Hz are blank with no options.

When I manually select LC display 1280x800, intially it only offers me
800x600 resolution to choose from.

I have to save the display location and press OK. When I next go to the
settings, it offers me more screen resolutions. If I pick 1280x800 and
save the lcoation again and press OK, then open the app again, it shows
the original Custom 1 option (above). If I select the location settings,
it shows my saved setting sonly with a resolution of 1280x768. If I
change it back to 1280x800, it forgets it each time.

Despite all of this, my display is fine and these settings seem to have
no effect whatsoever!

[Bug 149947] Re: Provides no functionality for my display and doesn't save changes

2007-10-06 Thread joss
I've just repeated these steps a couple of times and I was finally given
the message that for the settings to take effects, all users must log
out. I've never seen this message before. I did this and now my
settings of LCD Display 1280x800 have been remembered. However, the
location field is blank, which doesn't seem right.

So it has worked, but I shouldn't have had to go through all of the
above to finally save and remember settings I manually selected. Auto-
detect didn't help at all.

I'm very willing to help debug this if necessary.

Thanks very much

[Bug 123548] Re: lcd brightness down doesn't work when gpm running (t60)

2007-09-23 Thread joss
Similar problems on a Lenovo 3000 N100 0768FPG.

I can only set my brightness correctly with:

cat $level /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

and then entering a number between 0 and 100.

There seems to be a patch here that works for someone:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg08822.html

When I type:

cat $level /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

I get this:

levels: 100 57 0 14 28 43 57 71 86 100
current: 0

despite having just set it at 100.

[Bug 140892] Usplash appears to break suspend/hibernate

2007-09-19 Thread joss
Public bug reported:

When using Usplash on Ubuntu Feisty (Lenovo 3000 N100), Usplash works
well but it breaks suspend and hibernate. When I uninstall Usplash,
suspend and hibernate work fine.

When Usplash is installed and I suspend or hibernate, the machine goes
into suspend/hibernate but when it wakes, GDM appears to hang. I can't
change to console mode and have to hard reboot using the power switch.

This is similar to previous bugs reported but also occurs when coming
out of suspend, not just hibernate.

If there are logs I can include, please let me know which ones you want.

[Bug 140892] Re: Usplash appears to break suspend/hibernate

OK. I've figured out why this was happening. If I remove the vga=
option from the /boot/grub/menu.lst, usplash works fine and so does
suspend and hibernate. It seems that passing that option to grub is not
necessary and was breaking suspend and hibernate (on wake up).
