[Bug 2065639] [NEW] Splash screen shows Ubuntu 23.10 instead of 24.04 and forces logout

2024-05-13 Thread Richard M
Public bug reported:

We performed a minimal install of Ubuntu Server 24.04, disabled swap.
This is a machine with limited resources (8GB SSD, 2GB RAM).

Installed ubuntu-desktop-minimal, stopped/disabled/removed gdm3;
installed lightdm and rebooted.

After reboot we see the maroon X splash asking us to login. However at
the bottom right of the screen it says "Ubuntu 23.10", not "Ubuntu
24.04".

When we login by entering the password we get a white screen with a sad face
icon and the words:
"Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't
recover. Please log out and try again." Trying again results in the same
problems.

The above set of install steps works fine using the Ubuntu Server ISO
for Ubuntu 22.04.4.

Got the auto comment about lack of package. Looked at Finding the Right
Package. It happens during the installation of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS so it
looks like the right package is ubiquity.

[Bug 2065367] [NEW] 24.04 LTS Installation failed on RPI5

2024-05-10 Thread M Gordon
Public bug reported:

I had RaspiOS Debian 12 bookworm desktop running on my 8GB Raspberry Pi
5. I'm attempting to switch to the RPi version of Ubuntu Desktop 24.04
LTS. I've created an install microSD card with raspi-imager and selected
Other OS then Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS.

After picking English, Los Angeles, etc., then I get to the point where
I input details to name the host and create my user account, click next
and get Installation Failed. I click OK, some text flashes by fast, then
get a basic sign-in screen but can't sign in. It won't accept the
username and password I selected, and ubuntu/ubuntu. I tried a terminal
session on tty2 to see if I could check any logs but again, no working
username/password.

In case it was some sort of download error with raspi-imager, I
downloaded the "ubuntu-24.04-preinstalled-desktop-arm64+raspi.img.xz"
file and used Rufus to write that to the install media. The microSDXC
card is a brand new Samsung 256GB Pro Plus A2 V30.

What do I do now?

[Bug 2061118] Re: Rendering issues in virtual machines (GTK ngl backend)

2024-04-29 Thread Philip M
I was able to get something working on my win 11 i9-13900H discrete
RTX2000 laptop.

I used:
mks.enable3d = "TRUE"
mks.enableDX12Renderer = "TRUE"
mks.enableDX11Renderer = "FALSE"
mks.dx12.vendorID = "0x17AA"

and I also had to do:
settings->system->dislay->graphics
entries for both vmware.exe and vmware-vmx.exe (its in a subdirectory)
Both entries specify that vmware must run only on RTX2000 and not the cpu GPU.

Still seeing
MESA: error: ZINK: failed to choose pdev
glx: failed to create drisw screen
but that might be known?
I dont think linux will be stable until you back off mesa to not have that
error.

[Bug 2060665] Re: Unable to click on top left screen

2024-04-27 Thread Yoann M
I just got the bug again (you can see it's not very often)

I just sent the debug.

xwininfo is not working on that zone top left zone. I can't click on it.
I can only click outside this box.

I tried again with "lg", and the text show that it's some notification.
It's some "old" Skype notification.

Stopping Skype do not solve the issue, so I think it's linked with the
notification system.

(Note : My notifications are showned on bottom right of my screen, not
top left)

2024-04-26 Thread Philip M
Also tried virtualbox this morning on a different win 11 machine with an
nvidia laptop gpu and same thing.

No 3D acceleration is not stable on vmware (crashes after a while)
With 3D acceleration black screens really fast on vmware and virtualbox (which
uses the vmware driver by default)

yes please do so and thanks for the proper re-classification.

if i am not mistaken i couldn't mark this a security issue w/o creating
this non-public, even though I thought this description is not very
sensitive.

(edit: found the right option for security public. is this only visible
after the bug is submitted, or did I simply miss this?)

2024-04-04 Thread Filip M
This one really affects my productivity. It's not only terminal it's also slack
and some other apps.
Looking forward to @Daniel's PPA.
This also raises a question of testing upstream packages by Ubuntu team, as
clearly this wasn't tested in all possible usage cases. I understand not
everything can be tested in depth, but a bug of this magnitude needs to be
triaged ASAP and not in weeks time frame. It's bad for enterprise users, and
it's bad for all the newcomers. We decade old Ubuntu users are kinda used to
this situations, not happy but used to it.

[Bug 2047758] Re: Cannot save PDFs due to PikePDF incompatibility, solved & patched upstream

2024-04-01 Thread Fabio M. Panico
UPGRADE pdfarranger via SNAP:

I'm on Ubuntu 22.04.04 and I was facing the same issue, having installed
pdfarranger 1.8.2 via command line apt install.

Removing it (with sudo apt remove --purge pdfarranger) and reinstalling
via snap (sudo snap install pdfarranger) I got version 1.10.1 and fixed
the issue.

[Bug 2058829] [NEW] Extreme low audio when using headphones

2024-03-23 Thread Vanderson M. do Rosario
Public bug reported:

The laptop audio works fine, but when I plug a headphone it seems that
there is no audio. If I turn on overamplification it is possible to hear
some low volume sound. So, the audio is actually there, it is just
extremely low.

I tried multiple things that I found only but none seems to work.

[Bug 2047758] Re: Cannot save PDFs due to PikePDF incompatibility, solved & patched upstream

2024-03-15 Thread Fabio M. Panico
Hi, I would like to say that I'm facing the same problem. Hope it's ok
to add this comment into this bug report.

I recently made a fresh install of ubuntu 22.04-04. And when trying to
combine 2 pdfs, PDF-Arranger gives me this error: "use
pikepdf.PDF.pages interface to copy pages from one PDF to another"

Installed versions are:
pdfarranger 1.8.2-1
libqpdf28 10.6.3-1

I don't know to tell if pdfarranger is using this libqpdf or another
version, but if someone could explain I'm willing to do it.

[Bug 1992187] Re: hplip not working after install in 22.04, python error

2024-03-12 Thread Fabio M. Panico
Could not understand how to implement the workaround suggested by
Alterbo Donato #4. I would appreciate if you could clarify.

But uninstalling the package available at Ubuntu 22.04 repository and
installing the package downloaded from HP Developers
(https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/gethplip)
worked fine for me.

[Bug 1760325] Re: Unresponsive scrollbars in application categories of Application Dashboard widget

2024-03-08 Thread Anjune M
** Description changed:

  Ubuntu release:

Ubuntu Bionic Beaver (development branch), but the problem also occurs
in Kubuntu 17.10 if upgraded to Plasma 5.12 through the backports PPA.

  Package version:

  plasma-desktop:
    Installed: 4:5.12.4-0ubuntu1
    Candidate: 4:5.12.4-0ubuntu1
    Version table:
   *** 4:5.12.4-0ubuntu1 500
  500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/universe amd64 Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

  What I expect to happen:

Application categories with more applications than will fit on one page
naturally get a scrollbar. I expect this scrollbar to turn blue/display
some other "hover decoration" when moused over and to respond to
  clicking and dragging.

  What happens instead:

Nothing. Clicking the scrollbar in (say) my rather large Games category
has the same effect as clicking on an empty space in the Application
Dashboard widget; i.e., it just exits the widget.

Please note: the scrollbar in the All Applications page DOES work; it's
only the scrollbars for the regular categories (as specified in a .menu)
  file that do not.

Also, scrolling with the mouse wheel still works, and the scrollbars
(while unresponsive to clicking) will move correctly when doing so.

I wish I had any logs to provide but I don't know where this would be
  logged, if anywhere.

It still works on my Kubuntu 17.10 install with Plasma 5.10.

  Using Xorg.
+
+ ---
+
+ 8 March 2024: Still broken in exactly the same way on Plasma 6 on Arch,
+ so I suppose bugs.kde.org would be the place for it.

[Bug 2054861] [NEW] suspend-target and systemd-suspend.service hang on resume and blocks shutdown/reboot

2024-02-25 Thread M. Kurt
Public bug reported:

This happens only after I connect my Toshiba FireTV via HDMI. I don't need to
be using the TV. If I have connected TV just once it is enough to trigger this
bug. Laptop goes to sleep just fine but when it wakes up from sleep I see 5
services when I execute
$ systemctl list-jobs

JOB UNIT TYPE STATE
7348 nvidia-resume.servicestart waiting
7236 suspend.target start waiting
7346 grub-common.service start waiting
7237 systemd-suspend.service start running
7241 grub-initrd-fallback.service start waiting

In this state, I have to cancel suspend-target which in turn cancels
7346 grub-common.service start waiting
7237 systemd-suspend.service start running
7241 grub-initrd-fallback.service start waiting

Then, I have to cancel cancelling systemd-suspend.service which cancels
7348 nvidia-resume.servicestart waiting

I use the laptop without issues but then if I need to shut it down or
reboot, system gets stuck after logging out of X. I end up doing a
REISUB.

[Bug 39376]

2023-06-16 Thread Marcin-kasperski-m
- Do editors in 2023 still save files like sth.txt~, sth.txt.bak and
similars?

  Yes, they do.
Some skip that when working inside git/hg/svn/… folder, some allow
to use separate folder, but such files are still fairly frequent.

- Would some users prefer not to see those files?

  Yes. For example myself.

- Does KDE allow user to manage which files are hidden, and which are
not?

  No, it doesn't.
There is option to show or hide „Hidden files” but no way to influence
which file is considered to be „Hidden”.

So functionality-wise bug is just as sound and valid, as it was when it
was reported.

Projects make various priorities, open-source projects even more so
(considering people come to work on what they fancy or what they find
troublesome). Some bugs are less lucky. But if there is to be any hope,
the open issue means the thought of doing sth is not abandoned.

And it is somewhat heart-warming to get mail that sb. started working on
issue I reported 20 years ago (OK, OK, I reported one of the early
dupes, not this one)

Yep, this affects all versions. FWIW, the ddebs repository seems to break
like this every 1-2 years and after reporting it, it's usually cleaned up
in a week or two.

[Bug 1971642] [NEW] Can't resume from sleep with Alder Lake and AMD GPU

2022-05-04 Thread M Willis Monroe
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to Jammy I can no longer put the desktop to sleep and
successfully resume. I'm using the stock kernel and stock mesa drivers
for the GPU.

When I press the wake button on my desktop the computer lights turn on
briefly, but no power is going to USB devices (e.g. the mouse doesn't
light up) and the computer never seems to wake. It also can't be reached
via SSH on the local network.

The /var/log/syslog is not helpful as its corrupted right at the point
of sleep.

[Bug 1970282] Re: Flatpak apps are not properly themed if a accent color other than the default is choosed

2022-04-29 Thread Joao M
For a Flatpak application to follow the system theme in use, the corresponding
Flatpak theme needs to be installed. For example, if I use the "Yaru" theme in
"Dark mode" with the "Prussian Green" accent color, the
"org.gtk.Gtk3theme.Yaru-prussiangreen-dark" needs to be installed. If it is,
both system applications and Flatpak applications look consistent.
However, only a few themes are available in the Flathub repos. If you search
for Yaru themes on Flathub (flatpak search Yaru), you will notice there are
alot of variations, but only the packages not presenting a "Version" number
correspond to the new 22.04 Yaru theme. As such, only the following Yaru
(22.04) themes have a correspondent Flatpak theme:

Yaru
Yaru-dark
Yaru-sage
Yaru-bark
Yaru-bark-dark
Yaru-prussiangreen
Yaru-prussiangreen-dark
Yaru-olive
Yaru-olive-dark
Yaru-magenta
Yaru-magenta-dark

For a consistent look between Flatpak and non-Flatpak applications in
Ubuntu 22.04, the missing accent color themes need to be available in
Flathub.

It doesn't freeze. The primary monitor is connected to the RX 580, and
2nd monitor is connected to the motherboard. If I unplug the 2nd monitor
thats using i915 there is no crash. Suspend and switching to TTY's work
if I unplug the 2nd monitor.

Are you sure your receiving reports? Are you talking about that popup
that that says Ubuntu has encountered and error and do you want to send
an error report or something? That doesn't happen.

I'm still crashing with the exact same issue with 42.0-2ubuntu1. If i
blacklist amdgpu at boot time and use the Intel monitor there is no
crashing but obviously it isn't ideal.

[Bug 1968912] [NEW] vim.tiny reports 'E1187: Failed to source defaults.vim' on execution in default install

2022-04-13 Thread M
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 22.04

When running vim.tiny it says:

$ vim.tiny
E1187: Failed to source defaults.vim
Press ENTER or type command to continue

This is due to the defaults.vim file not being available. If you just
run it as vi

$ vi

this message does not appear as vim.tiny runs in compatibility mode. I found
mention of this issue in:
https://github.com/grml/grml-etc-core/issues/99

The defaults.vim file is provided by the package vim-runtime.

I'm unsure what the issue is, if something needs to be in
/etc/vim/vimrc.tiny or a /etc/vim/vimrc needs to be provided dpkg claims
vimrc is in vim-common, but no file is installed for me from that
package, or if vim-runtime needs to be a required package for vim-tiny

$ dpkg -S /etc/vim/vimrc
vim-common: /etc/vim/vimrc
$ ls -al /etc/vim/vimrc
ls: cannot access '/etc/vim/vimrc': No such file or directory

I discovered this because my .selected-editor was vim.tiny after running
crontab -e

$ crontab -e

Select an editor. To change later, run 'select-editor'.
  1. /bin/nano< easiest
  2. /usr/bin/vim.tiny
  3. /bin/ed

Those options are disabled in Mate Tweak.

Re: [Bug 1967673] Re: coredump when attempting to use menu options

2022-04-04 Thread M Conrad
I ended up deleting the app and installing the snap as a workaround - which
is working so far without any issues.

[Bug 1967702] [NEW] Accessibility features have been disabled, modules like speakup_soft and others are missing

2022-04-03 Thread Tiago M. C.
Public bug reported:

From very old versions of Kernel for Ubuntu until version 5.13, accessibility
features were enabled, allowing blind users to use screen readers in text mode,
such as "speakup" via "espeakup" package.
In Kernels 5.15 packages for Ubuntu 22.04 beta, such as
"linux-image-5.15.0-23-generic", accessibility features are disabled (no
justification for such occurrence was listed in the file
"changelog.Debian.gz"), with this the espeakup application doesn't work, it
depends on the missing speakup_soft module.
Missing in the file "/boot/config-5.15.0-23-generic" comparing with the file
"/boot/config-5.13.0-39-generic", the line
CONFIG_ACCESSIBILITY=y
and the following lines are also missing:

[Bug 1962718] Re: Firefox snap crashes on every upgrade

2022-03-26 Thread Thomas M Steenholdt
While the problem might be in snapd, Firefox is still very much
impacted, when it comes to the decision to ship 22.04 LTS without a deb
version of Firefox to fall back to. In my experience, this is just one
of many ways the experience with the snap version of Firefox is not on
par with the traditional package time - yet. Lots of serious problems
exist, that have still not been sorted out since the beginning of the
21.10 lifecycle.

[Bug 1949212] Re: mate-panel Redmond layout is not showing "Places", "System", or "Applications"

Is this a layout change from the way it used to be? Previous releases
had places, etc, it is only after the upgrade the functionality
disappeared. It is actually a very negative user experience.

[Bug 1804554] Re: 18.10: lubuntu sddm crashes with openbox session

2022-03-15 Thread Nils Erik M.
I had the same issue as described when installing fresh 20.04.

I fixed it by adding `~/.config/openbox/autostart` and adding the line:
`feh --bg-scale "path/to/image"`

After that I could login to the openbox session as normal.

2022-02-23 Thread Leonard M Struttmann
I am also affected by this bug. Running 20.04.3 LTS on a SAGER laptop.

System hangs. Sometimes I can recover by switching to another window,
but most times I need to reboot.

After reboot syslog is full of:

gnome-shell[1979]: Window manager warning: Overwriting existing binding
of keysym 36 with keysym 36 (keycode f).

...messages

[Bug 1012858]

2022-02-18 Thread K-it-m
Somewhat nice that after nearly 10 years something has been done about
this.

Yet I strongly suspect that this "cures" just one of the symptoms of a deeper
issue,
namely some busy waiting whenever a network connection is a attempted but the
network or the addressed server is (temporarily) unavailable.

See also bug 1107251, bug 683651, bug 562977, and likely several more.

[Bug 1960256] [NEW] compilation due to "peermem" module

2022-02-07 Thread D M
Public bug reported:

Installed with the following:

apt-get install --no-install-recommends nvidia-driver-470 nvidia-
modprobe libnvidia-cfg1-470 libnvidia-common-470 libnvidia-compute-470
libnvidia-decode-470 libnvidia-encode-470 libnvidia-extra-470 libnvidia-

nvidia-dkms-470 nvidia-driver-470 nvidia-kernel-common-470 nvidia-

Seems to generate /var/crash/nvidia-dkms-470.0.crash (tail -20):

   /usr/bin/ld.bfd -m elf_x86_64 -z max-page-size=0x20-r -o

Title: nvidia-dkms-470 470.103.01-0ubuntu0.18.04.1: nvidia kernel module failed
to build

It is added:

# dkms status -k `uname -r`
iser, 4.7: added

nvidia, 470.103.01: added
rshim, 1.8, 5.4.0-97-generic, x86_64: installed
srp, 4.7: added

However, doing a build gets:

 dkms build nvidia/470.103.01

Kernel preparation unnecessary for this kernel. Skipping...

Which I suspect is related to the "peermem" module:

This does not seem to be supported on (unpatched?) 5.4 kernels per this
thread I found:

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2106512#p2106512

Downloading and running "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-470.103.01.run" directly
also fails, UNLESS the following options is used:

  --no-peermem
Do not install the nvidia-peermem kernel module. This kernel module
provides support for peer-to-peer memory sharing with Mellanox HCAs (Host
Channel Adapters) via GPUDir
