[Bug 2062330] Re: Chromium fails to start with "invalid home directory"

2024-04-19 Thread macho
For (1), I do have encrypted home directory. Although this is probably
less relevant, I also use the second user I created (i.e. I'm UID 1001
and I don't really use the UID 1000 user)

For (2) and (3) (i.e. system-packages-doc) I'm not sure how to gather
the info you need. Do I need to revert snapd? How do I tell what
chromium interfaces are connected?

[Bug 1926028] [NEW] "About this computer" reports 20.04 instead of 20.10

2021-04-24 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

Top-right-widget >> About This Computer

pops up a window titled "Details" whose main contents report "ubuntu
20.04 LTS" in a large font.

This caused me some confusion, since I couldn't figure out for some time
why the Software Updater app was not offering version upgrades, despite
that I had it configured to do so. I started to become suspicious based
on the giant gorilla art all over my desktop, and it indeed turns out
I'm already running 20.10:

[Bug 1878732] [NEW] Ctrl+U / "Url(s) >> Open" fails

2020-05-14 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

As of my recent upgrade to 20.04 LTS which bumped me to 2.44 keepass2,
Ctrl+U normally works.

Expected/previous behaviour: open entry's url in default browser

Actual/current behaviour: modal error widget shows url with message

whereas the "Open with Firefox" and "Open with Google Chrome" options
both work as expected.

[Bug 1723757] Re: encfs fails to decrypt one of two sources

2018-02-13 Thread macho
Oops: the issue was that I tried using the same .encfs6.xml file for
both. Using the one from /etc fixed the problem. Still, it would be
nicer to receive a meaningful error message when this occurs to indicate
the .encfs6.xml is the wrong one.

[Bug 1730123] [NEW] Auto-type fails in gnome-terminal

2017-11-04 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

Auto-type works across most applications (browsers, email clients, etc.)
but fails specifically in gnome-terminal.

When I invoke auto-type with focus in gnome-terminal, KeePass pops up a
modal window whose title is "KeePass" reading: "For global auto-type,
the 'xdotool' utility/package is required (version 2.20100818.3004 or
higher!)."

$ dpkg -l keepass2 xdotool

I recently updated to Ubuntu 17.10. I'm fairly confident that I never
got this error in 17.04, but I may will simply never have tried auto-
type in gnome-terminal, at least recently.

[Bug 1723757] [NEW] encfs fails to decrypt one of two sources

2017-10-15 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

I am regularly backing up remote, incremental, encrypted copies of my
home dir as well as /etc. The encryption portion is done simply using
"encfs --reverse"

In both cases I can see what seem to be properly encrypted files copied
away.

But I get weird results when I mount the remote, encrypted directories
on /mnt/sshfs and run:

ENCFS6_CONFIG=/home/macho/.encfs6.xml encfs /mnt/sshfs /mnt/crypt

For my home directory this works expected, and I can see all my
decrypted files.

But for the remote copy of encrypted /etc, although the command happily
reports no errors, yet the mount is empty:

# sshfs :/media/backup/encfs/basic/etc/2017-10-14_12:37:828918549 /mnt/sshfs
# ENCFS6_CONFIG=/home/macho/.encfs6.xml encfs /mnt/sshfs /mnt/crypt
EncFS Password:
# ls /mnt/crypt -a
. ..
# mount | grep crypt
encfs on /mnt/crypt type fuse.encfs
(rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions)

Any thoughts on why this would be broken? Is it a problem with encfs
itself? I used the same password for both. The discrepancy between root
and user macho's versions of .encfs6.xml shouldn't be the problem: the
root user doesn't even have such a file. Should I not be using the same
xml file for more than one source? That would seem strange.

Thanks!

[Bug 1681110] Re: Passphrase dialog window shouldn't be system modal

2017-04-18 Thread macho
Thanks for the suggestion. 'dpkg-reconfigure pinentry-gnome3' didn't do
anything, so I installed looked through the documentation and couldn't
find any relevant configuration options.

Removing the package led to enigmail failing to even prompt me for a
passphrase, and hence decryption obviously failed.

Installing pinentry-gtk2 restored the same problems I had with pinentry-
gnome3.

So I then tried pinentry-tty. This fixed the problem for gpg at the
command-line (the modal problem at least, there still isn't a helpful
title to be able to auto-type), but enigmail still didn't prompt me
(perhaps it's loathe to launch a terminal window), so decryption fails.

But this does all seem to strengthen the suggestion that the problem
isn't with gnupg2, but rather with either the pinentry suite or
enigmail. Can you confirm and, if possible, suggest the best alternative
venue to file this bug?

Thanks!

[Bug 1681110] [NEW] Passphrase dialog window shouldn't be system modal

The dialog that collects the user's passphrase shouldn't be modal (or at

[Bug 1656868] [NEW] Won't start / crashes

2017-01-16 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

As of today, I can't start Firefox: the crash window displays before I
ever see a browser window.

I have several add-ons installed, so I tried:
$ mv ~/.mozilla/firefox ~/.mozilla/firefox.old

Same result. I also tried launching using the "-safe-mode" flag, with
the same result.

I submitted a bug report through the crash window.

I'm unfortunately not sophisticated enough to use the "--debug" flag.

Any thoughts on what might be happening? Thanks.

[Bug 1582342] Re: nm-applet display doesn't correspond to connection status

2016-06-07 Thread macho
Thanks so much. The bug started to be more annoying when trying to
connect to new wifi networks. The fix works great, and is much
appreciated.

[Bug 1582342] [NEW] nm-applet display doesn't correspond to connection status

2016-05-16 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

nm-applet displays the wrong icon and shows no wireless networks post-
xenial upgrade, although the network manager does continue to auto-
connect to wifi. At first, it showed the greyed-out wifi icon, though it
was connected, and now it's showing the wired connection icon despite
only being connected through wifi (see the attached file).

This is with the amd64 network-manager-gnome version
1.2.0-0ubuntu0.16.04

[Bug 1520426] [NEW] Improve animation adding icon to launcher

2015-11-26 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

Feature request:

When you install a new application, a little animation follows in which
the icon flies from the software centre window into the launcher. But it
is a very basic and unbecoming animation. I think it could be improved
by by making it less linear in one (or preferably several) of the
following ways:

* varying the speed at which it moves
* varying the path through which it travels (e.g. spiral, erratic, etc.)
* varying the icon size (start huge and shrink down to size as it moves, or
grow and then shrink)
* begin transparent and then become progressively more opaque as it moves

and so on ...

[Bug 1519116] [NEW] Cantata handbook unusable

2015-11-23 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

Cantata on its own doesn't install the dependencies needed to access its
own documentation under the menu Help » Cantata Handbook.

The errors that arise when trying to open the handbook suggest an apt-
get khelpcenter, so I did that, but still no luck.

Now when I try to open the handbook I get a window whose title is
"Error: Cannot initiate the help Protocol - help:/cantata/index.html —
KDE Help Center". The window body includes a long, vague error message
beginning with:

The requested operation could not be completed
  Cannot Initiate the help Protocol
Technical Reason: Unable to Launch Process

It seems to me that the best thing to do is to add the necessary
dependencies to this package so that the documentation works. If seen as
too burdensome to force the installation of vast quantities of KDE just
to read the docs, then I would point out that for some unfathomable
reason this core Cantata documentation seems to be unavailable on the
web, so I would recommend filing an upstream request to get it online,
and have the menu item in the Ubuntu package link to it.

[Bug 1378362] [NEW] Associate Ctrl+Q with File Exit

2014-10-07 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

I would like for Keepass to associate the Ctrl+Q key combination with
the File Exit menu action.

This would be in keeping with the standard behaviour for Ubuntu
applications, which associate Ctrl+Q with File Quit.

Although the specific menu item differs here (“Quit” vs. “Exit”), and I
am not sure what Keepass’s behaviour is on other platforms, I think that
Ctrl+Q should be preferred over an alternative such as Alt+X. This would
keep with the practice in other software, such as LibreOffice, which
includes an “Exit” option associated with Ctrl+Q.

For consistency, however, I would also suggest renaming Keepass’s menu
item to “Quit” instead of “Exit”. Please let me know if you prefer that
I file a separate bug for this request, but it seems to me to be very
closely linked to the issue here.

Thank you!

[Bug 1378365] [NEW] Adopt standard Ctrl+Q key combination over current Alt+X

2014-10-07 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

To conform to standard Ubuntu practice, I believe that the Torrent
Exit menu item should be associated with the Ctrl+Q key combination
rather than Alt+X, as it is currently. The vast majority of Ubuntu apps
associate “Quit” with Ctrl+Q, but even those that instead include an
“Exit” option (e.g. LibreOffice) still associate that option with
Ctrl+Q.

Ideally “Exit” would be renamed to “Quit” for consistency, but even
failing that change, I believe that Ctrl+Q should be preferred over the
idiosyncratic Alt+X.

Thank you!

[Bug 1313250] [NEW] Shortcut key Ctrl+L no longer sets cursor to page selector in 3.10.3

2014-04-26 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

In previous versions of evince, when I pressed Ctrl+L the cursor focus
would be set to the page number box. It made it extremely convenient to
navigate documents. Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 / evince 3.10.3,
this seems no longer to work. Would be great to get the functionality
back. Thanks!

[Bug 932900] Re: Unity freeze, crashes when trying to restart - GPU lockup with IPEHR: 0x7a000002

2012-11-29 Thread Maik Macho
I do not know if it will help either, but replacing sna with uxa in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf ( or creating a new file with these contents:

Section Device
Identifier intel
Driver intel
Option AccelMethod uxa
EndSection

) will at least make gnome-shell / unity / ... run. The problem:
graphics problems (transparency, smoothing, performance, ...).

My graphics card is defined as Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset
Family in Windows, as Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset x86/MMX/SSE2
in the Settings and yells about i915 hangs in dmesg on boot-time when
running with SNA.

I would like if there will be a fix for that without changing the
AccelMethod option.

[Bug 826940] Re: PDFMOD removes pages other than the one I have requested. End up with a file with just the page I would like removed...

Just FYI—in my experience although PDF Mod shows the wrong pages after
deletion, it actually has deleted the correct pages, which you can check
by saving the file and then reopening it.

[Bug 1017108] Re: crashes when it encounters PDFs in Windows encodings (codepage 1252)

2012-09-21 Thread macho
I've marked this bug as affecting me, although I'm not sure what
encoding the pdfs are which are crashing PDF Mod. They seem to often be
those generated by the book2net.net Spirit scanner.

A workaround seems to be to convert the file:

gs -q -sPAPERSIZE=letter -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite
-sOutputFile=converted_file.pdf original_file.pdf

[Bug 801415] [NEW] Perform Auto-Type is broken

2011-06-23 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

Strange behaviour for Perform Auto-Type/Ctrl+V. As soon as it's
pressed, the main window minimizes, and a superfluous Open Database
dialog opens up. After correctly entering the credentials, it performs
the auto-type, but with incorrect characters. I created a username of
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz and it auto-typed
abideyuhijkpmlorqrstuvwxtz. Interestingly, when my keyboard is set in
dvorak layout (which I normally use), it autotypes
axceḟgdchtlmnrpṕoygky.

I should mention, Ctrl+B and Ctrl+C work just fine for copying usernames

same as the user names.

[Bug 801417] [NEW] Font width glitch in Edit Entry dialog

2011-06-23 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

The cursor in the password textboxes in the Edit Entry dialog doesn't
match its position. It must be using a character width different than
the font's. For instance, if you look at the attached file, you can't
see the cursor, but if I put it in one of the password boxes and hit the
End key to move it to the end of the line, it shows up in line with
the end of the last character in the username box, a few characters back
from the end of the line.

[Bug 603348] [NEW] Rythmbox playback choppy

2010-07-08 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

Rhythmbox playback has become really choppy a few days ago. I'd been
happily using it for years prior without any problems. It plays maybe a
half-second at a time, and then a half second of silence, and on like
that. Maybe less than half a second.

I've closed every other program, and checked 'top' which shows nothing
taking more than a few percent of the CPU, and like I said, it worked
before. It appears to be happening for all of my music files.

After finding this thread: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
users/2005-July/043809.html

I did as instructed and tried running gst-launch-0.10 playbin
uri=file:/somefile.mp3 which plays back completely fine (no
choppiness). Oo does that mean this is a bug within Rhythmbox, as that
thread suggests?

Sometimes rebooting the system seems to restore Rythmbox to normal
playback for a while. I'm running Lucid Lynx Ubuntu, with Rythmbox
0.12.8. Happy to provide any more info if helpful.

Thanks.

[Bug 503833] [NEW] ktorrent gui constantly hangs after intrepid update

2010-01-06 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ktorrent

I just upgraded from hardy to intrepid. On hardy, ktorrent
2.2.5-0ubuntu1.1 had been working fine for me for quite some time, but
in ktorrent 3.1.2+dfsg.1-0 on intrepid the GUI is running extremely
slowly for no apparent reason. The application started by sending me a
series of modal information widgets I had to click OK on, each of which
took about five minutes to appear on the screen, and five more minutes
to acknowledge I'd clicked OK and disappear.

After getting through this, the GUI started, but grayed out, as though
it was hung. After about five minutes of sitting there, it comes back
to life, but as soon as I click anywhere inside the window it grays
itself out again for another five minutes.

Running top I can see that it's using roughly 90% of the CPU (though it
varies), and consistently 50% of available memory.

As I say, I never had these problems running the older version on hardy,
and at that point I had only 1/3 the amount of memory I do now. All the
other intrepid applications appear to be acting normally.

I'm happy to send along more information, if that would be helpful.

[Bug 493445] [NEW] fails to install on upgrade

2009-12-06 Thread macho
Public bug reported:

Some security upgrades to the kernel came through recently via the icon
in the taskbar. It included

linux-image-2.6.24-26-generic
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-26-generic
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-26-generic

among others. I did /not/ get this package (linux-backports-
modules-2.6.24-26-generic) which was a big issue for me, because it
includes my wireless network driver (rtl8180), so I lost internet access
after rebooting once the security upgrade happened. I was able to
figure out quickly enough what happened and install the missing package
to fix the problem, but this could be a big problem for other users.
Prior to the upgrade, the module in linux-backports-
modules-2.6.24-25-generic was working fine.

I do have the linux-generic package installed, which I believe is the
meta package responsible for sorting all of this out.
