If this is not gdm job to make other softwares exit correctly ( that I
think too ), why don't those other softwares were not fixed !!
This must be this way.
Since 2007-07-18 this report exist !!! We say that gnu-linux ( desktop )
can work well without rebooting, ctrl+alt+backspace is this symbol

Hi same problem, it happens only when expand is disable in panel
proprieties ( where window list applet is ) .
You can reproduce it :
Enable compiz ,
Disable Expand in panel proprieties ( where window list applet is )
alt+f2 , enable run in terminal , paste this :
echo -e This is a bug !

This bug appear if you open and closing often DIFFERENT windows.
