To clarify, which one of the proposed workarounds fixes the issue ?
Does fixing in this case mean that no separate /boot partition is
needed ?

Here's another strange fact:I've also experimented with a Grub live cd
(Super grub 2disk) and a Grub recovery cd made with grub-mkrescue,they
both have troubles finding the partitions on the disk.
There are three in total:
/boot partition
/root partition
/swap partition
all of them are primary.
I can't believe that anyone may chalk this up to a supposedly incorrect
setup:as many others have reported,I've just done a clean install
(Lubuntu Trusty) from CD to a new hard drive, the installation process
finished normally and then the system could not be booted, period.
After fiddling with
I still can't get this to work in my current installation of Lubuntu 14.04:I've
set all available updates to be displayed immediately, added update-notifier to
start up applications, and yet no notifications are ever visible.
So far,the only way to find updates has been to manually launch the
Follow up to my comment #69 : what is triggering the random READ ERROR
message is apparently rebooting the system:cold boot does now (kinda)
work with a separate boot partition and the workaround from comment #53
to hide the error message, however attempting to reboot the system often
triggers this
Following comment #30,I've also verified the md5sum of my /sbin/init
with the original package on http://packages.ubuntu.com/ and they do
match.

Same here on Lubuntu 14.04 : on a new install chkrootkit reports Warning:
/sbin/init INFECTED but then there's no evidence of this with repeated passes
of unhide and rkhunter.
Apparently, also running chkrootkit -x and chkrootkit -x does not report the
infection,as far as I can see.

I can report the same issue in Lubuntu 14.04 32 bit:trying to benchmark my SSD
fails after few seconds with the message:

I can see this bug on a new install of Lubuntu 14.04:no notifications for
updates are ever seen, even if there's indeed hundreds of packages to be updated
(easily verified either manually launching the GUI update manager or with
apt-get -s upgrade) and update-notifier has been added to start
Just a clarification, the error message when trying to reinstall Grub in

possible to reinstall grub from the running system with the usual sudo
grub-install /dev/sdX command.) was:

I've run into this issue after installing Lubuntu 14.04 32 bit on an old laptop
upgraded with a new 64GB SSD:the disk had first been partitioned with only a
primary root partition (ext4) and swap, the installation process apparently
went normally, then after installing the system I did get this
It works for me too:now cube is back,I just followed the instructions, dropped
libcube.so in ~/.compiz-1/plugins,logged out and then in again, and it
works-with just the slightest hint of flicker maybe, but it could be my ATI card
as well,or the AMD proprietary driver, who knows.
Thanks a lot
This fix works perfectly in Mint 13 64 bit Mate edition,I can also set
custom keyboard shortcuts in Compiz preferences to see windows from all
workspaces,no issues-just a note,in my case logging in again via Mint's
new login didn't do the trick,a full reboot was needed to have things
working.

Apart from Initiate Window Picker For All Windows being still broken

to exit the plugin doesn't work as it used to in previous compiz
versions,which is

In reply to comment #28 : does this fix currently work with the Mate desktop
environment ? I've been trying with Mint 12,Mint 13 and Mint Debian and I can't
see any raw (Cr2) thumbnail at all, furthermore according to this issue
https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-file-manager/issues/21 , Mate
Bug still existent in Linux Mint 13 and Mint Debian,gThumb can open and
display CR2 files but no thumbnails are visible (this actually applies
not only to CR2 Canon raw image files but to also to other (possibly
all ?) comparable image formats from other camera makers.

I've tried this workaround as described in comment 28 both in Mint 13
Mate and Mint Debian Mate,it doesn't work for me,still no thumbnails
whatsoever for raw photo files.

I've reported this bug referring to Linux mintdebian (LMDE),and yes,it
is still there with any Firefox version I've tried so far, including the
current 17.0.01,even in safe mode: the Open Directory button in
about:support doesn't work.
