[Bug 1311247] Re: [Grubenv] error: malformed file, press any key to continue
To clarify, which one of the proposed workarounds fixes the issue ? Does fixing in this case mean that no separate /boot partition is needed ? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1311247 Title: [Grubenv] error: malformed file, press any key to continue To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/grub/+bug/1311247/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1311247] Re: [Grubenv] error: malformed file, press any key to continue
Here's another strange fact:I've also experimented with a Grub live cd (Super grub 2disk) and a Grub recovery cd made with grub-mkrescue,they both have troubles finding the partitions on the disk. There are three in total: /boot partition /root partition /swap partition all of them are primary. For some reason to detect all three takes several attempts,at first the ls command or the detect any grub.cfg in the case of Super grub 2disk only sees the root partition, then after repeated attempts the full disk layout is recognized and the system can be booted.
[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found
I can't believe that anyone may chalk this up to a supposedly incorrect setup:as many others have reported,I've just done a clean install (Lubuntu Trusty) from CD to a new hard drive, the installation process finished normally and then the system could not be booted, period. After fiddling with grub commands and managing to boot the system only to confirm that once booted there were no issues and the problem was the boot process in itself,I've resorted to a separate boot partition as advised in many threads, which only partially solves the issue:the system can now boot, yet it still spits out error messages in the process, and furthermore can't be rebooted,it has to be shut down and then restarted. I've installed several Debian and Debian-based distros so far (including earlier Ubuntu releases) on not-standard multi-boot setups, reinstalled Grub after recovering some partition, and not once run into this issue:I can't see how reinstalling/reconfiguring Grub, resorting to command line methods or having to otherwise repair Grub may be part of a normal installation process. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1289977 Title: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1289977/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1311247] Re: [Grubenv] error: malformed file, press any key to continue
Follow up to my comment #69 : what is triggering the random READ ERROR message is apparently rebooting the system:cold boot does now (kinda) work with a separate boot partition and the workaround from comment #53 to hide the error message, however attempting to reboot the system often triggers this other READ ERROR message for which I've found no other solution than hard reset (power off) the computer and then booting it again.

Just a clarification, the error message when trying to reinstall Grub in the first case (I was able to boot the system but then it was not possible to reinstall grub from the running system with the usual sudo grub-install /dev/sdX command.) was: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklistts are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged.. grub-setup: error: will not proceed with blocklists. The workaround described in comment #53 apparently works for me,as the error message is no longer visible, however the boot process itself now seems to take a bit longer.
I've run into this issue after installing Lubuntu 14.04 32 bit on an old laptop upgraded with a new 64GB SSD:the disk had first been partitioned with only a primary root partition (ext4) and swap, the installation process apparently went normally, then after installing the system I did get this error message on boot: error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'. Entering rescue mode... grub rescue from that I was able to boot the system following this advice http://askubuntu.com/questions/397485/what-to-do-when-i-get-an-attempt-to-read-or-write-outside-of-disk-hd0-error basically with grub rescue set root=(hd0,root partition) grub rescue set prefix=(hd0,root partition)/boot/grub grub rescue insmod normal grub rescue normal I was able to boot the system but then it was not possible to reinstall grub from the running system with the usual sudo grub-install /dev/sdX command. As a next step, following the advice from the same link posted above,I've reformatted the drive with a dedicated boot primary partition and a primary root partition (still ext4) plus swap and installed grub to the boot partition during the installation process:now I'm getting the [Grubenv] error: malformed file, press any key to continue message but the system boots most of the times either by hitting a key or waiting for the message to time out, except for some times when I see another READ ERROR message and I have power off and then on again the laptop. This was a clean install on a new SSD in single boot mode (no other OS and no other partitions are present on the disk) and furthermore I've tried also Mint 17 (based off Ubuntu 14.04 as well) and got stuck in the same situation.

It works for me too:now cube is back,I just followed the instructions, dropped libcube.so in ~/.compiz-1/plugins,logged out and then in again, and it works-with just the slightest hint of flicker maybe, but it could be my ATI card as well,or the AMD proprietary driver, who knows. [Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from current workspace.
This fix works perfectly in Mint 13 64 bit Mate edition,I can also set custom keyboard shortcuts in Compiz preferences to see windows from all workspaces,no issues-just a note,in my case logging in again via Mint's new login didn't do the trick,a full reboot was needed to have things working. As for my comment #189 and reply #191,in reality I can't recall what was going wrong, after this fix now everything is working as expected, with button 3 zooming on the selected window-if anything, the scale addon that makes possible to pull a window to another workspace to the current one (when viewing windows from all workspaces) isn't working, but I don't know if that would be worth fixing. [Bug 933776] Re: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. It shows only windows from current workspace.
Apart from Initiate Window Picker For All Windows being still broken to date,I would also point out that, once the plugin action (for a single window,obviously...) is initiated, the right-click (or button 3 ) click to exit the plugin doesn't work as it used to in previous compiz versions, which is kinda annoying and also IMHO inconsistent with the usual behavior, still found for instance in the Expo plugin. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/933776 Title: [regression] scale/spread: Initiate Window Picker for All Windows does not show all windows. [Bug 1164741] [NEW] Consider extending support for Lucid 10.04.4 LTS
Public bug reported: Now that Ubuntu Lucid 10.0.4 has almost reached the end of its life- cycle, considering how much of a dramatic change would be the upgrade to the current 12.04 LTS release, would it be possible to consider an extension of its support, although strictly limited to security updates? People who still use Lucid do this for a reason, they have in all likeliness tried the newer Ubuntu releases and drawn the conclusion that they are far too distant from Lucid to be considered an update, they actually are a different OS altogether. Lucid has indeed been working flawlessly (at least,as far as a software can be flawless) so far and actually still does,so giving up on this release for something else that is not nearly as easy and comfortable to use for them may not be an option. Considering that this kind of users is certainly not interested in using the latest and greatest software (or else they would have made the move to the current 12.x releases by now),why not consider a limited form of support for keeping this traditional yet still very functional and widely appreciated Ubuntu release still alive? ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1164741 Title: Consider extending support for Lucid 10.04.4 LTS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1164741/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
