Hi Daniel, indeed the CL is how i solved my problem, but that is completely beside the point. We're talking about the User Experience bug on Jockey. [Bug 606743] Re: Rhythmbox missing the normal synchronization feature in Lucid
@Sebastien Bacher i implore you to change your mind on this. Please hear me out. Can we not only emulate, but can we blow right past Apple? Mark Shuttleworth, July 22 2008. The answer is definitely yes! if we take care of these vital user experience details. Bear in mind that Rythmbox = iTunes for the new customer to Ubuntu coming over from the Mac or Windows world. It has to compete head to head and at least roughly stack up or it creates an enormous hole for the Ubuntu customer who then can not achieve this functionality without keeping a Mac or Windows machine around. Contemporary versions of iTunes itself will not play on Linux even with Wine so Rhythmbox *has* to play this role. Millions of customers have iPods or other media players that they have become accustomed to syncing with iTunes on Mac or Windows so their expectations have been firmly set. Even before it is important to be 'Social from the start' it is much more important to be able to This fix has actually been done since *summer of 2009* and released since 2, July 2010 in the 0.13.0 Albatross release of Rythmbox and there is plenty of time and its such a breathtakingly basic feature of the leading GNU/Linux distro's default modern media player to be missing from an LTS that it is compelling to incorporate into the 10.0.4.2 LiveCD and even earlier than that via updates for 10.04 and 10.04.1. Would we really want LTS users to be stuck without such a fundamental capacity until April 2013??? Absolutely not. Lucid is a very special release, not just because it is an LTS, but because of the truly revolutionary breakthrough it represents in ease of use for Ubuntu. Tremendous numbers of new Ubuntu customers are being exposed to Ubuntu and Linux through this release. In order to fully back up Mark Shuttleworth's vision of GNU/Linux that is as easy to use as the Mac, we must take care to fill in the basic functions of a modern OS and like it or not, support for basic synchronization of media players as iTunes has spoiled millions of customers with is very much one of those features. Even though it is challenging to move from 0.12.8 to 0.13.0, it is very important in order to do so to move toward the Ubuntu vision of Mark Shuttleworth. The developer, Jonathan Matthew announced the fix release in the 0.13.0 and later versions: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=310774 Jonathan Matthew [rhythmbox developer] 2010-03-29 I've just merged code based on Paul Bellamy's GSoC 2009 project into master. iPod sync now works. ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #310774 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=310774 ** Summary changed: - Rhythmbox missing the normal synchronization feature in Lucid + Rhythmbox missing the basic, normal syncing feature in Lucid ** Changed in: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed ** Changed in: ayatana-ubuntu Status: New = Confirmed -- Rhythmbox missing the basic, normal syncing feature in Lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/606743 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I and a group from Ubuntu Beginners Team are reviving the Wifix project, which is roughly similar to Jockey (except only focused on Wifi drivers). We hope to accumulate, and maintain a database of wifi adaptors and corresponding drivers and publish it for everyone to use. We hope that Jockey will make use of the resources we provide. We definitely will be studying Jockey to learn all we can and provide whatever patches and code we can help out with. Please feel free to participate in the Wifix project as we contribute to Jockey also. [Bug 433714] Re: initial empathy account wizard does not offer IRC as an account
@ Jeff how about we fix it and push it upstream to GNOME instead of waiting for them? Lately that's what we (Ubuntu and Canonical) been criticized for failing to do. If it is trivial then we can 1) solve our problem and 2) be heroes to GNOME and good FLOSS community members simultaneously. Obviously i misspoke above and it would have to be 10.04.2 since 10.04.1 has already been shipped. -- initial empathy account wizard does not offer IRC as an account https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433714 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 433714] Re: initial empathy account wizard does not offer IRC as an account
I think this fix needs to be put into 10.04.1 . As i wrote above, this is a serious problem for supporting new users and since 10.04 is an LTS we could be faced with this issue for a long time unless the fix is added to the LiveCD. I continue to believe this should be raised from 'low' importance to at least medium or high for empathy (Ubuntu). -- initial empathy account wizard does not offer IRC as an account https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433714 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 609815] Re: Fresh Wubi 10.04 install + grub update renders system unbootable
bcbc: This bug may relate to #604417, but in the instance i observed with xissburg wubi was installed on the same partition as Win 7. In xissburg's system there was an original XP partition, then a second Win 7 partition. Wubi was installed on the Win 7 partition. Then a Wubi Ubuntu install was added and it appeared that the windows bootloader (i would think that was a Win 7 boot loader since Win 7 was added later and was the first entry in the boot loader, but can't say with 100% certainty) was disrupted after a grub update to Ubuntu. -- Fresh Wubi 10.04 install + grub update renders system unbootable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/609815 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 609815] Re: Fresh Wubi 10.04 install + grub update renders system unbootable
Question for BCBD: what if the bug is not about whether its the same partition as windows is on (because in xissburg's case it was the same partition as Windows 7) but whether it is on the first partition created or not? Because in xissburg's case Wubi was installed on a partition with the Windows 7 so Windows was definitely present, however it was the second partition created, so maybe THAT is the real key factor(?) So the way to test this theory would be to set up a dual boot system with two windows systems. Try installing Wubi on both (especially the second windows system you create), and continue to run the experiment as you did previously. @xiss burg, @bcbc, okay xissburg clarified something i'd not known: that on xiss burg's system Wubi was installed not on the Windows 7 partition, but on another partition that didn't have a windows system on it. So this seems to reinforce bcbc's theory that the key is installing Wubi on a non windows system partition and subtract from my alternative theory that it is related to just installing on a later partition (2nd or later) than the first created partition. -- Fresh Wubi 10.04 install + grub update renders system unbootable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/609815 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

On 8/14/10 in #ubuntu a number of us supported xissburg for something like 15 hours as this bug was preventing booting. Finally xissburg solved it by using a Windows7 recovery CD, but we left it before xissburg had been able to reestablish the 2nd entry in the bootloader for Win XP or their wubi ubuntu install. Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200, 4GB RAM DDR2 667 MHz, HDD 320 GB, Mobo P5N-E SLI Wubi install ubuntu 10.04 32bit Noted: xissburg also had some version of XT as the second entry in the windows boot loader and had split the hard disk equally between Win 7 and XP. At one point in the troubleshooting this was xissburg'sd partition info: http://imagebin.org/109698 . [Bug 606743] Re: Rhythmbox missing normal synchronization feature with iPod / iPhone / Audio player
Based on Pedro Villavicencio's comment's actions it sounds like this bug should be narrowed to be more specific, so I'll narrow it to being Rhythmbox Sync Feature Missing on Lucid. It needs to be included in Lucid (and hopefully when the Lucid liveCD is remade since it is such a fundamental function) when it becomes available since Lucid is an LTS. Public bug reported: I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with Rhythmbox 1.12.8 and an iPod Nano 5th Generation. I can't figure out how to sync music and podcasts (in both directions like iTunes does) between RB and the iPod. Can Rhythmbox even do it? I think I have all the codecs necessary and Rythmbox has the Portable Players - iPod plugin installed and enabled. After much experimenting I figured out I can drag and drop individual Podcasts from Rb to the iP (but not in the other direction) and songs in both directions, but the interface is not intuitive at all and I can't figure out if there's a way to sync up as I normally would with iTunes. I also can't figure out how to move playlists from one to the other. After I figured out the limited workarounds noted above I saw similar workarounds proposed as an 'answer' to Question #97074, but I do not consider work arounds an adequate answer to my question. Since Rhythmbox is the default player in Lucid I believe it needs to 'just work' in order to give the fantastic user experience that Mark Shuttleworth has made the goal for Ubuntu. If these features are just missing as it appears, I consider them deficiencies in Rhythmbox and I'll create bug/wishlist items for them. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Rhythmbox missing normal iPod/iPhone/mp3Player syncronization https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/606743 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 433714] Re: initial empathy account wizard does not offer IRC as an account
I completely disagree with this bug being labeled of 'Low' importance. Note that this is important enough that it will need to be included in the liveCD of Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx when it gets updated. Otherwise since Empathy is the default IRC client new users of Lucid may mistakenly think IRC is simply unavailable to them. This is vital because our #ubuntu-beginners, #ubuntu, and many other support IRC channels are critically important to new users. ** Also affects: ayatana-ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: ayatana-ubuntu Status: New = Confirmed -- initial empathy account wizard does not offer IRC as an account https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433714 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 605290] Re: Unplug, replug AC on laptop, screen pulses, battery indicator not updated, power statistics and preferences screens unavailable
The above apport update was collected while this sydrome is taking place. Currently upower --dump reports the battery is discharging even though the AC is plugged in and the battery indicator shows charging, but the battery indicator detail screens are inaccessible and a little rectangle pops up saying the battery is discharging. So some parts of the indicator say one thing and some say another. [Bug 591129] Re: Install Button not Working - nothing happens
THE ESSENCE OF THIS USC BUG is that USC fails silently and inexplicably leaving the new user (the target audience for Ubuntu Software Center) in the dark as to what to do next. Below are listed least three slightly different circumstances that result in this bug. . FIXES: 1) Minimally the USC needs to give a) meangful error message that b) provide a course of resolution action doable by a new Ubuntu user. There are probably always going to be circumstances where USC will fail so *at least* meaningful error messages are always going to be a bottom line requirement. 2) Even better would be if USC attempted to resolve the underlying issues that are triggering the bug. So if it is an apt-get problme maybe running running apt-get -f install . (For more see http://www.linux.com/archive/feed/48910 for an escalating solutions for when apt-get fails). 3) One easy partial 'fix' that at least sometimes will avoid triggering the bug is to change the default to have the application menu item run with 'gksudo softwarecenter' instead of its current default which is simply 'softwarecenter'. This would avoid some of the policykit errors. 3 TRIGGERS/WORK AROUNDS FOUND (SO FAR): 1a) In the quarkrad's forum post ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1500473 ) according to post #18 he said it appears a policykit startup program was launching a KDE rather than a gnome version. He did a workaround by [quote] System/Preferences/Startup Applications Under the Startup Programs tab uncheck PolicyKit Authentication Agent. Click on Add to create a new startup program. [Bug 321287] Re: Seahorse will not generate a key
Confirm this on Lucid 10.04 i686 Above is requested: please do a 'ls -l ~/.gnupg/*.gpg'. This will will list (among other things) which user and group owns the files. There should be 3 files, pubring.gpg, secring.gpg, and trustdb.gpg. These 3 files -- in fact, *all* under ~/.gnupg -- should be owned by your userid, your group, not by root, or any other user. Please comment on what you find. Thanks. Here is my finding: $ ls -l ~/.gnupg/*.gpg ls: cannot access /home/username/.gnupg/*.gpg: Permission denied username@computername:~$ sudo ls -l ~/.gnupg/*.gpg ls: cannot access /home/username/.gnupg/*.gpg: No such file or directory My steps were: first I tried to generate a PGP key from the command line but failed and was unable to find the steps to do it properly that way. So I installed Seahorse. 1) Started Seahorse from menu 2) Tried 'Sync and publish keys' but that seemed to stall, so I cancelled it. 3) I press on the 'new' button to generate a new key. I select PGP key and press continue. I fill out the fields for 'real name', 'email address', and 'comment'. I so NOT click on the arrow for advanced options. I click on 'Create'. It asks me for a Passphrase for New PGP Key. I enter my password two times, the same both times. I click OK. [Bug 321287] Re: Seahorse will not generate a key
Update and RESOLUTION: What it boils down to is that previously I'd run the command line gpg tool with sudo. Like the original gug reporter, my .gnupg directory was therefore owned by root. To fix it I deleted the directory and ran Seahorse again in normal user mode (ie. w/o sudo). Here's my investigative steps that lead me there: even though above I reported that ls -l and even sudo ls -l didn't see the file, when I check it with sudo nautilus (view hidden files) it does see the .gnupg directory and the directory and files are owned by root. Since the date on the files is yesterday I'm guessing that they were created by my command line attempts yesterday and since they are owned by root I'm guessing I did 'sudo' to create a PGP key pair after an attempt to create it without sudo failed with an error. The files are: gpg.conf pubring.gpg pubring.gpg~ trustdb.gpg I deleted the entire directory and try again from Seahorse without sudo priviledges. WORKED! ** Changed in: seahorse (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- Seahorse will not generate a key https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321287 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 321287] Re: Seahorse will not generate a key
Suggested Fix: 1) inform the operator that the .gnupg directory is owned by root and therefore cannot be used to generate a key 2) either (preferred) a) give operator option to delete the directory b) authenticate their sudo password, delete the directory and then c) ask if they wish to try again (ie. without having to re-enter the configuration info). or (at least) b) provide a short explanation that they will need to do the steps above manually. Note: the op reported that the error dialog box actually showed the html tags. Since this is no longer the case, that aspect of the bug seems to have been fixed. ** Summary changed: - Seahorse will not generate a key + Seahorse won't generate a key when .gnupg directory owned by root, only gives unhelpful General error -- Seahorse won't generate a key when .gnupg directory owned by root, only gives unhelpful General error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321287 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 321287] Re: Seahorse won't generate a key when .gnupg directory owned by root, only gives unhelpful General error
I think the comments by Jimbo and Dominic above are probably a different bug (possibly bug #321287) which then would need to be written up separately. Note: looking at the gpg documentation, my guess is that http://www.gnupg.org/gph/en/manual.html#AEN26 gives General error for several different error conditions and cannot therefor be used to identify exactly what the underlying problem is. -- Seahorse won't generate a key when .gnupg directory owned by root, only gives unhelpful General error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321287 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 321287] Re: Seahorse won't generate a key when .gnupg directory owned by root, only gives unhelpful General error
C de-Avillez, yes that is a good point about potentially unintentionally destroying other data. I wonder if Seahorse just changed the permissions to be controlled by userid if that would solve the problem. I think it probably would. The thing is that if you give new to intermediate users with the info but no immediate action they can take to fix it, they could be stuck w/ no knowledge of how to fix the situation, so I favor a fix that Seahorse immediately offers and can carry out in entirety.
New Suggested Fix (taking into account C de-Avillez's input above): 1) inform the operator that the ~/.gnupg/ directory and all the files in it are owned by root and therefore cannot be used to generate a key. 2) either (my strong preference) 2.1.1) give operator option to change the ownership of the directory and files to be controlled by their userid. 2.1.2) authenticate their sudo password, make the ownership changes. 2.1.3) ask if they wish to try creating the keys again (ie. without having to re-enter the configuration info). or (minimally -- I don't prefer this and think its inadequate) 2.2.0 provide a short explanation that they will need to do the steps above manually. From a user experience view point I think the 2.1.1-3 branch is quite a bit better. The user is well-informed as to what the problem is and has an immediate action they can take to fix the brokeness and to continue on with the creation of their keys. Otherwise they may be stuck in a situation they don't have the knowledge to fix and essentially Seahorse will stop working for them -- again note that in this root ownership condition 'Syncing and Publishing' is broken as well, so applying this fix would solve that problem as well. Also this set of actions could be added to the 'Syncing and Publishing' function as well (if there is not already a bug report written for that bug there probably should be). -- Seahorse won't generate a key when .gnupg directory owned by root, only gives unhelpful General error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321287 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
