[Bug 1624765] Re: wifi broke after 16.04 upgrade

2016-10-22 Thread Parag Joshi
Hello Joseph,

Thanks for looking into the fix. Sorry for late reply as I was busy

during install it failed and so I reported a new bug at :

So, how to move forward?

Here are the errors trying to install headers. (Installing image worked

[Bug 1624765] Re: wifi broke after 16.04 upgrade

2016-09-26 Thread Parag Joshi
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I upgraded from ubuntu 14.04 LTS to ubuntu 16.04 LTS. My wifi was working
fine in previous version. But, after upgrade wifi broke. It won't show any wifi
networks and I couldn't enable wifi from ubuntu panel on top right corner.
I tried almost all suggestions in this page and few other askubuntu pages
with same problem:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/62166/siocsifflags-operation-not-possible-due-to-rf-kill
  But, nothing worked.

  Here is my console output:
  ~$ sudo rfkill list
  0: dell-rbtn: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: yes
  1: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
  7: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

Then, I ran "sudo rfkill unblock wifi" but that didn't fix anything.

Finally, the only thing that worked was:
  sudo modprobe -r dell-rbtn

I don't even know if this is the right way to fix it. Please fix the
16.04 kernel and OS upgrade package so that other users don't face this
problem that cost me 2 days. Thank you.

[Bug 1624765] Re: wifi broke after 16.04 upgrade

2016-09-17 Thread Parag Joshi
After upgrade, my hardware switch for wifi (accessed by Fn + function
key) stopped working. But, all other function keys to control display
brightness, volume, mute have been working fine.

There are some pages on askubuntu.com which discuss the same problem
that I have. But, they talk about re-installing broadcom drivers, etc. I
checked mine and I seem to have a qualcomm device instead of broadcom.
See below:

~$ lspci -vnn | grep Network
06:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless
Network Adapter [168c:0036] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Dell QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter [1028:020c]

[Bug 1075660] [NEW] Boots to corrupted/unusable screen

2012-11-06 Thread Parag Warudkar
Public bug reported:

The latest kernel update vmlinuz-3.5.0-18-generic breaks Radeon/KMS -

Stopping and restarting X server makes the problem go away. Here are
problem case and problem-free case Xorg logs - Xorg.0.log.good is
without problem after restart, Xorg.0.log is first log when screen is
corrupted.

[Bug 1075660] Re: Boots to corrupted/unusable screen

2012-11-06 Thread Parag Warudkar
** Description changed:

- The latest kernel update vmlinuz-3.5.0-18-generic breaks Radeon/KMS -
- machine always boots to a corrupted / unusable screen with artifacts.
+ iMac12 often boots to a corrupted / unusable screen with artifacts. VTs
+ are unusable. SSH login works and killing and restarting Xorg/lightdm
+ fixes the screen corruption problem.

- Reverting back to vmlinuz-3.5.0-17-generic version fixes the problem.
+ [ Update: Seems to be reproducible independent of kernel version - both
+ -17 and -18 give the same results.]

[Bug 264313] Re: ls --color hangs for directories linked from network

2011-12-19 Thread Parag Joshi
I don't think this bug should be closed or label WONTFIX.

Nothing should hang.

I recently face similar issue and ls keeps hanging and even the
workaround with eval doesn't fix it.

[Bug 906643] [NEW] ls hangs after using sshfs mount on a sub-directory

2011-12-19 Thread Parag Joshi
Public bug reported:

Using lucid LTS on both client and server machines. Recently, I installed fuse
and did mount on sshfs in a sub-directory in my home directory.
Here was the command:
sshfs -o idmap=user my-user-on-remote@tagz-2:/
/home/my-user-name/tagmount/
After this ls on the sub-dir tagmount worked and I could see files from server.

But, after weekend when I again tried to do ls or used konqueror to see
files in that dir they both keep hanging.

Even ls ~ keeps hanging and even Ctrl-C cannot kill it. I just had to do kill
-9.
strace shows hanging on stat64 on the sshfs mount directory.

I saw Bug #264313 which is similar but the work-around specified there doesn't
work for me.
I think neither this nor Bug #264313 should be closed. These should be
considered high priority bugs as nothing should hang without recourse.

In the meantime, please let me know if there is any work-around. I am
still unable to do ls or use dolphin in the home dir.

I reported Bug #906643 which involves sshfs and this eval work-around
didn't work for me. Not sure if the cause (following symlinks for
coloring) is similar in my case.

[Bug 857816] Re: X fails to start on boot

2011-11-08 Thread Parag Warudkar
No longer able to reproduce - there was a BIOS update meanwhile - not
sure if that fixed it or updated packages.

I do however see a separate issue - lightdm just brings up the cursor -
in the background the VT is still there and keyboard keys produce
gibberish but I realize that's a different issue - will open a new one
for that.

Thanks.

[Bug 314813] Re: root user consuming more power.

2010-01-10 Thread parag
Battery preferences in both the scenarios are same.

Conky is running in both sessions.

With the age of the laptop, now the gap between battery backup available
in normal user session and root user session has increased and is some
where around 15-20 minutes. Thus normal user still continues to provide
more backup.

Hope following information helps:

[Bug 314813] Re: root user consuming more power.

2010-01-10 Thread parag
Firefox was opened as I was posting the reply on the bug from user
'root'. In general when I freshly login as root I get starting backup of
1 Hour 10 Minutes.

If I immediately switch user to normal user I get around - 1 Hour 25
minutes

So I don't think Firefox made any major difference. If you still want I
can get you the results from freshly logged in session and no other
applications running in both the scenarios.

[Bug 461773] [NEW] apt-get installflashplugin-nonfree fails with HTTP 404 on fpdownload.macromedia.com

Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded to Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 (lsb_release shows Ubuntu 8.04.2), my
flash player stopped working. I have tried re-installing flashplugin-nonfree.
However, after removing it and running sudo apt-get install

The Flash plugin is NOT installed.

Note that, I did run sudo apt-get update before running this install command.
So, it should have the right URL.
Also, I could not view flash in Firefox even when flashplugin-nonfree was
installed and I had the .so files in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory.
Even after removing flashplugin-nonfree, I still have flash player in
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/. So, why does flash not work?
$ ls /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/

At the very least, this HTTP 404 should be fixed.

[Bug 364333] [NEW] ath9k crashes machine when joining wireless network

2009-04-20 Thread Parag Warudkar
Public bug reported:

I have a AR5008 PCI Wireless card in my workstation, and booting Jaunty
RC Kernel (+ all updates) and trying to join the WPA network always
results in a totally frozen machine.

I upgraded the kernel to mainline 2.6.30-rc2 and I was able to connect
and work with the wireless network without any problem.

[Bug 362678] [NEW] KDE4 NetWorkManager Unusably buggy

2009-04-16 Thread Parag Warudkar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: knetworkmanager

So I tried to use Kubuntu Jaunty RC LiveCD on 3 different machines and 2
different Access Points and KDE4 NetWorkManager failed horribly - HP
Mini (Broadcom WL module was loaded automatically) , HP 6910p (Intel
4965AGN) , Macbook Pro2,2 (ath9k).

Clicking on the SSID of my wireless network resulted in add network
dialog first. After adding all the details, it was followed by 2 more
unexplainable dialogs asking for the same network credentials. Upon
entering the credentials and clicking OK instantly there was a
notification that connecting to the network had failed. This whole
sequence was repeated each time I clicked on the SSID in list.

Opening the Manage Connections dialog - I found that same network was
added for as many times I had attempted to click on the SSID! Selecting
and removing the network resulted in blank screen - no VT switch
possible, no other interaction possible. Had do hard reboot.

I dared to do the installation on the Macbook Pro and the on-disk
install and this time around I was able to connect after going through a
similar sequence for few times but it constantly lost connection to the
AP and spewed warnings about having active connection but an empty
connection list or something like that. (The lost connections are due to
ath9k I am fairly certain - that got relatively better after upgrading
the kernel to 2.6.30-rc2 but the speeds were horrible - will file
another issue for that.)

Wonder if people are actually using Kde4 network manager and if yes
under what circumstances.

2009-03-25 Thread Parag Warudkar
Mainline kernel 2.6.29 does not seem to have this problem - same VM runs
ok on 2.6.29 while it gets stuck with the vcpu not ready for
apic_round_robin error.

BTW, I am not using multiple VCPUs - single cpu Intrepid x86 vm.

Re: [Bug 267241] Re: Xorg fails to start with more than one display adapter

I've done some analysis into this bug (as well as a number of other
related dual-card bugs) this week.  This patch changes the behavior such
that when it gets into this error condition, rather than giving up and
erroring out, it should make X select the card with the highest busid.

The use case I'm imagining here is where a user is having problems with
their on-board video and have purchased a second card to override it.
Don't know whether that use case is a good match to folks' issues here,
so am open to discussion on that.

Correct me if I am wrong but I *think* that would not be the most
common use case - in case of machines having built-in video and a
discrete card, the BIOS completely disables one of them depending on
what is chosen in BIOS. (At least the HP desktop I had did this - it
had Intel GMA on-board and when I put in a nv 8400 GS - I was allowed
to choose one - the other was completely 'gone' for the OS).
(I have no idea what the case is with Laptops using 2 cards which
allow for runtime switching between low-power / high-power - but since
I have heard of no problems with MacBooks which have this feature - I
suspect that only one is visible.) Your patch seems like it will pick
the last one seen - whether or not it will work obviously depends on
whether or not people have connected output to the last one seen by
Xorg.

The most common case in relation to this issue would be where people
actually have 2 discrete cards and BIOS allows one to be set to
primary - the second one is still visible to the OS. Figuring out what
the BIOS's notion of Primary/Secondary is may be easier I think to
determine where to output. I will put the 2nd card back in my
workstation and see if I can find any clues.

[Bug 291187] [NEW] Xorg Regression - fails to start with multiple GPUs

2008-10-30 Thread Parag Warudkar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

I have two graphics cards in my workstation - Nvidia 8800GT on bus
128:0:0 and ATI x1650 on bus 96:0:0. When booting Linux, I select the
ATI card as the active one in BIOS. The X server shipped with Debian
unstable deals with them correctly depending on which one is active. The
X Server shipped with 8.10 release just fails to start by default.

I have to hand edit the xorg.conf and specify a BusID in the device
section to get the server to start the live cd installer.

[Bug 279885] [NEW] No Way to correct mount options

2008-10-07 Thread Parag Warudkar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I have a internal sata disk formatted with one single ext3 partition.

I click on the volume in Nautilus-Places and it mounts fine. However
after mounting I try to incorrectly change the mount options or path -
there is no way to correct it once the Properties-Volume window is
closed.

With the wrong mount options, attempting to mount shows error as
expected (although the error message isn't exactly helpful, but that's
another bug) - but the Properties menu option is no longer accessible
(at least I did not find it anywhere) and thus the volume can never be
mounted again.

The Properties window should validate the options and force the user to
correct the wrong ones or go back to the previous ones before closing /
applying them. That way this situation will not arise.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/nautilus
Package: nautilus 1:2.24.0-0ubuntu1
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: nautilus

[Bug 279885] Re: No Way to correct mount options

2008-10-07 Thread Parag Warudkar
Well the options are editable using gconf-editor tool
(/system/storage) - they aren't part of fstab and I was able to find
the right keys to unset and it can mount now.

BUT this bug report is about the user interface which allows wrong
options to be set and then doesn't allow to easily change them.

Thanks
Parag

[Bug 248038] [NEW] Dependencies broken for zlib1g-dev

2008-07-13 Thread Parag Joshi
Public bug reported:

I am running gutsy 7.10 and my sources.list file does not refer to any
non-gutsy repositories.

I need zlib.h to compile another software and so using Adept Manager I
tried to install zlib1g-dev. I already had zlib1g installed previously.
After choosing Request install, Adept manager shows BREAK (install)
and it fails to install. I think this is similar to another bug about
cabal-install having dependencies broken.

Re: [Bug 243446] Re: Upgrade tool crashed

2008-07-02 Thread Parag Joshi
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 107188 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/107188

Hello Michael,
Thanks for the quick reply and suggestion. Actually, reading bug report on
launchpad, I came across the work-around of doing text mode upgrade.
Somebody suggested this:
Edit DistUpgrade.cfg so that it only tries to do the upgrade in text mode
since python can't load the libs for GTK, and QT has the memory issue.
So, I followed that and although that also resulted in an error at the end
but it seems I could upgrade to gusty. /etc/lsb-release shows gusty as I
would have liked. Not sure if the installation is fine in other ways. Are
there more robust checks to ensure integrity of upgrade / installation??

By the way, I had a crash while upgrading dictionaries as part of the
version upgrade. I am attaching file:
/var/crash/dictionaries-common.0.crash
Should I file a separate bug on this?

Thanks and I really appreciate your help, Michael.

@Parag: Hello! Please open a terminal window and try the following to work
 around the problem:
 $ sudo apt-get update
 $ sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
 $ sudo do-release-upgrade --mode=desktop

This should give you a text only upgrade, but at least you will be on
 feisty then.

Re: [Bug 243446] Re: Upgrade tool crashed

2008-06-28 Thread Parag Joshi
Hello,
I have been running ubuntu (I think edgy) 6.04 and I tried to do dist
upgrade from Adept Manager. I did see it crash in the middle. But,
there are no files in /var/crash.
After that I tried to do dist-upgrade twice and both times, it crashed
in the middle - but with a slightly different error. Now, I get out of
memory error when it crashes. So, I am not able to upgrade and I am
stuck at 6.04 (or 6.10). If you could help I will highly appreciate
it!

I have attached both files in /var/log.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks

Thanks for reporting this problem and helping to make Ubuntu better.

It is not 100% clear to me if update-manager crashed or not, if so
please include the .crash file or follow the following instructions:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport
report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic
 retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
 apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the
crash report you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
 /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash
in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to
 report.

If you do this and therefore create a new bug report, please make a
comment here to this extent, that this bug can be linked to the new one.

Furthermore, please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade to this bug
report (or the new report if you also follow the previous instructions).

 Thanks a lot.

remove that file from your profile and restart firefox. Does this help?

And it was answered 3 times - Chris Coulson (2 times - helped initially
