[Bug 548992] Re: Wireless connection frequently drops [deauthenticating by local choice (reason=3)]

2010-07-30 Thread quixote
Well, turning off ipv.6 at bootup hasn't worked for me. I tend to lose
wireless after coming out of suspend, and that hasn't changed. What has
helped is manually reassociating the Access Point, sometimes repeatedly.
E.g. using the command: sudo iwconfig wlan0 ap 00:80:4D:99:D7:10
(Substitute your own wlan# and ap, which you can see by running iwconfig
by itself.)

[Bug 548992] Re: Wireless connection frequently drops [deauthenticating by local choice (reason=3)]

2010-07-26 Thread quixote
I seem to have this problem too on a Thinkpad X201s running 64-bit Lucid
with all the updates, except that I'm currently using the 2.6.32.22
kernel. Wireless is dropped at some point, from hours to minutes,
especially after coming out of suspend. Sometimes the connection is
recovered once or twice, but usually it stays dropped until a reboot.

Just a side note for anyone who may not know exactly how to add the ipv6
line: open /etc/default/grub as sudo (eg sudo nano /etc/grub/default),
and alter this line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash ipv6.disable=1

[Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion

2010-05-08 Thread quixote
I've been helping plenty of people over on the forums who
install/upgrade to Lucid and are faced with a nonfunctional computer on
the next boot because they misunderstood something in the grub install
or upgrade process. It's not always this particular bug, but all user
interface issues in grub are astronomically important.

Please mark this important! The trauma for new users whose computer
seems to have died on them post-ubuntu is huge.

In my case, the bug doesn't appear until I install Vbox Guest Additions.
The non-free Vbox 3.14 itself is fine under the 2.6.32-16 32-bit kernel.
So I'd be very surprised if vbox-ose showed any problems. I'll try to

2010-03-15 Thread quixote
Sorry I didn't respond to your earlier message. Since I have only

for some reason I have to use numerical addresses without it. So, since
I had a workaround, and other things came up, I sort of forgot all about

[Bug 534765] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 21b0001c

2010-03-12 Thread quixote
After the 03-11 kernel update (I think it was 2.6.32-16-25??) the
constant crashes seemed to be resolved. However, as soon as I tried to
implement vbox guest additions, they came back.

So, at least in my case, the problem has something to do with the
interaction of the kernel and vbox guest additions. Without the latter,
it seems to be quite stable.

[Bug 534765] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 21b0001c

2010-03-09 Thread quixote
I'm a mere user, I have no idea whether this is exactly the bug I have.
But the title here is exactly the error message. When filling out the
crash report, I listed once a day. Actually, it seems to be happening
every few minutes after the latest lucid update, as of half an hour ago.

I run 32-bit lucid, inside virtualbox 3.1.4.

Very sad. So far, it's been an amazingly stable alpha! :(

Don't know whether it could be related, but after the update and a
restart, virtualbox guest additions no longer worked, so I reinstalled
that and rebooted again, and that was when I noticed all hell breaking
loose.

[Bug 441889] [NEW] update requests restart at wrong time

2009-10-03 Thread quixote
Public bug reported:

The latest updates to karmic (Oct 2) required a restart. There was also

I don't know whether just hitting restart would have caused problems.
If yes, then that sequence needs cleaning up before the next batch of

[Bug 346691] Re: 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption on 64 bit installations

Just two things for what it's worth:

Fact: I've been using the 2.6.29-04 kernel with up to date 64-bit Jaunty
on ext3 for a couple of months now with no problems at all.

Opinion: I am still horrified, appalled, perplexed, and angry that there
are neither any warnings on LiveCD iso downloads for 64-bit, nor an
update for the kernel shipped with the iso. I'm starting to get the
impression that whoever makes those decisions at ubuntu doesn't think
it's very important if I lose data. I know I'm repeating myself, and it
amazes me that in this community that should even be necessary, but that
is Not Good.

[Bug 392234] [NEW] vboxdrv creation and permission issues during install

2009-06-25 Thread quixote
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

I installed the dependencies and then VirtualBox-ose 2.2.4 r47978 from
source on Karmic (9.10). I could run it initially only as sudo because
a vboxusers group hadn't been created during the install. I added the
group, and my user to the group.

Vbox would start, but the virtual machines (eg winxp) would not. Turned
out the kernel module had not been compiled. modprobe vboxdrv fixed
that, but then the permissions were insufficient. A question a
href=https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox-
ose/+question/74867here/a indicated that changing permission on
/dev/vboxdrv to 666 might help. That does solve the problem for that
particular session, but rebooting reverts to 660.

I'm saw somewhere that the kernel module not being compiled is related
to the fact that vboxusers is not created at the right time during
install.

This report I think is related to these older ones, a
href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox-
ose/+bug/147076Bug#147076/a and a
href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox-
ose/+bug/137599Bug #137599/a.

#147076 has the suggestion to do sudo chgrp vboxusers /dev/vboxdrv
Again, this works, just like changing perms to 666, but is not
persistent between boots.

I should probably also mention that the file /etc/init.d/vboxdrv is
never created. So running sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup does
nothing.

[Bug 346691] Re: 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption on 64 bit installations

2009-06-20 Thread quixote
This is just to second (and third and fourth and fifteenth!) the
comments by mirix and Tim McCormack above.

It is essential that Ubuntu's processes for software release are able to
prevent such appalling disasters in the future. It is a measure of how
much goodwill Ubuntu has in the community that nobody took this story
and ran with it. That goodwill won't last if this sort of thing
happens.

I'm not saying the devs have to be perfect and never make a mistake.

What I'm saying is that when a potentially data-destroying bug is KNOWN
to be present before the release, there need to be methods in place to
prevent the problem.

[Bug 346691] Re: 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption with ICH8/ICH9 on 64 bits installations

2009-05-31 Thread quixote
As one of the regular users who's been KO'ed by this bug (and who's
pretty much frothing that this bug was *known* prior to the final
release and nobody bothered to put out a huge general HEADS UP about it
... but that's another whole issue) --

could somebody post easy instructions on how to install the kernel that
seems to solve the problem? At least then us poor schmoes could get
some use out of our jaunty installs. I'll be glad to put the workaround
in the known jaunty bugs and workarounds sticky on ubuntuforums.

For instance, would something along these lines be right:
[CODE]wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.29.3/
sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.29-and-then-what-goes-here??.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.29-and-then-what-goes-here??.deb
linux-headers-2.6.29-and-then-what-goes-here??_all.deb[/CODE]

(I gather the 29 kernel would be the preferred solution? Yes? No?)

Which commands -- or which further commands -- would one need?

I understand that this is not is not standard practice, yadda, yadda,
yadda. Having constant filesystem corruption is worse, though, so
please give us a fix!

Please at least give us a workaround!

I'm using 64-bit Intrepid, using my Pictures folder for the screensaver,
compiz is at the intermediate setting. Somewhere on the forums I saw
the suggestion to disable unredirect windows in the compiz general
settings, but that hasn't fixed it. Graphics is Intel GMA X4500.

[Bug 229144] Re: [hardy] screensaver fails to start and screen fails to completely black out

2009-02-07 Thread quixote
I just found a workaround. (Must be something about posting a problem.
I've been looking for this for ages.) From PhilCash in this thread
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6680279 :

Find the dir used by one of the default screensavers and put your link
there. For instance, cosmos is in
/usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/cosmos/

[CODE]sudo ln -s /full-path-to-desired-pictures/eg/astron-general/
/usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/cosmos/astron-general [/CODE]

[Bug 275742] Re: Ubuntu 8.10alpha6 failed to start on Dell Vostro 200

2008-11-01 Thread quixote
8.10 LiveCD as released on Oct 30th would not load on my Sharp MP30
laptop. It also quit the boot process with an initramfs prompt.

(Apologies if this is not the right place to file this. It's the only
related-seeming issue I found.)

I have ATI Radeon 7500 graphics, so I always (since Feisty when I
started with Ubuntu) run in safe graphics mode. I also use noapic
nolapic as options to the boot process on the advice of a knowledgeable
person. Ubuntu never boots properly without those options on my system,
but the failure happens when X starts, as might be expected.

This is the first time a LiveCD has failed to load like this.

(I'm an UNknowledgeable user, so if you'd like me to run any tests,
please give me the commands I'll need.)

The MP30 has a 1GHz Transmeta Crusoe CPU, 1GB RAM. I'm currently
running Hardy.

Just in case anyone reads these things (yes, I know, I'm feeling

Nice to finally have that annoyance fixed!

[Bug 93281] Re: Suspend failed message gives false advice

2008-05-31 Thread quixote
I get that error message regularly in Hardy 8.04. Your computer failed
to suspend. Check the help file for common problems. It's definitely a
low priority because it doesn't actually seem to affect function. But
what irritates me is that check help file business.

WHICH HELP FILE? Maybe the term help file could be made into a link
to the right one. Or it could be turned into the full path to the
relevant file. The way it is, it's just frustrating.

[Bug 187982] Re: update-manager fails to bring up the password prompt for root privileges

2008-05-30 Thread quixote
I hate to keep being the wet blanket here, but . . . my /etc/hosts file
looks okay (127.0.0.1 localhost, 127.0.1.1 my hostname). But I
continue to have the gksu problem. It affects not just the upgrade
manager. Anything accessed via the GUI that normally asks for a
password hangs up at that point. If I really need the utility, I have
to figure out which command calls it up, and then try $sudo command.
The problem started with Hardy. I've been using Ubuntu since Dapper.

[Bug 227753] Re: gvfs reports root partition 100% full

2008-05-11 Thread quixote
This is what finally worked to get my hard drive back:

All done as root:

umount gvfs-fuse-daemon

Change ownership of backup file generated by SimpleBackup on network
drive, and move to another location.

Change group of that network directory from 1000 to root.

remove that directory and all its subdirectories (#rm -r /mnt/network-
drive/backup) It had no visible or hidden subdirs, but an ordinary
rmdir command kept saying it was not empty.

On my computer (not the network drive), remove .gvfs both in my user
home dir, and in root's home directory.

exit root. reboot.

The gnome devs really need to get to work on this issue. A filesystem
that can make your computer next to nonfunctional is not a minor bug.

[Bug 217389] Re: Root partition usage reaches 100% without reason

2008-05-07 Thread quixote
I too use Simple Backup, but I'm not sure the problem is as Jan Rybka
says. In my case, it's not just background jobs without notices. gvfs-
fuse-daemon thinks the root partition is full, and even rebooting
doesn't help (so not just a matter of restarting the service). Since
the partition is full, I can't do the simplest operation that wants to
store anything to the filesystem, so this is a huge problem!

As far as I can tell, what happened is this: After my last sbackup (the
first under Hardy), the 2GB backup file was somehow seen as being on my
root partition, even though it's really on a network drive under /mnt.

I cannot umount it, even with -f. It says it's not mounted. I tried
moving the backup to a different directory on the network drive, so that
the backup dir it insisted on seeing was empty. It still showed a 2GB
backup in that dir. I tried uninstalling sbackup. gvfs still thinks
there's a 2GB file there.

I'm running 8.04 with all updates installed on a Sharp MP30 laptop.
This is an oldish (2005) slowish computer, and using Gimp for a huge
file, plus Firefox with multiple tabs, as I was doing ... :S , can
really slow down the system. It hasn't crashed, so I didn't think this
was the problem, but who knows.

If there's any workaround I can apply before the bug is fixed, please
let me know! Delete ~/.gvfs for instance? Anything?? I want my
computer back!

[Bug 227753] [NEW] gvfs reports root partition 100% full

2008-05-07 Thread quixote
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs-fuse

This is a major problem since it prevents any operation that wants to
store to the filesystem, including /tmp. gvfs seems to have decided
that one of my network drives is in my root partition. That makes it
think the root partition is full. (it isn't, really.)

A backup, made with Simple Backup, is in /mnt/mediavault/backup
/computer-backup-filename.ful . That dir and backup now show up no
matter what. I can't umount the partition, even using -f. I moved the
backup out of that dir, and it still lists as being in that location,
although it no longer is. In desperation, I tried to remove ~/.gvfs,
hoping that would straighten gvfs out, but it won't let me since the
resource is busy.

I'm running, 8.04. gvfs-fuse 0.2.3-0ubuntu5

This is similar to, but not the same as these bugs:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/217389 root partition usage
reaches 100% without reason. In that case extra backup files weren't
noticed and could be removed once they were.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-utils/+bug/211789 disk
usage analyzer shows twice disk capacity Deselecting gvfs-fuse-daemon
and rebooting did not solve the problem for me. Also, this bug is said
to be fixed upstream but whatever is causing my problem is not fixed
:(

How can I wake gvfs up to the fact that 2.2GB are NOT on my root
partition, but somewhere else entirely?!

[Bug 75324] Re: Gnome file chooser/selector is way to small

2008-04-21 Thread quixote
If it's been fixed, why in hell do I have a pathetically small file
selector box under Hardy 8.04?

One of the early commenters was right: this is one of the first
usability issues a new user bumps into. If it annoys an ubuntu fanatic
like me, what's it doing to them?

And, no, sorry, I don't know enough to contribute to fixing the bug.
Nor do I know how to recompile gtk. I'd just like a dialog window I can
resize THAT STAYS THAT WAY. (Do I sound frustrated? Really?)

If it's compiz's fault --and much as I like compiz on the whole -- how
do I turn it off? Can I turn it off?

Honestly, this is such a visible and important usability issue that it
really needs to be dealt with faster than two years!

I wish I could fix it. Unfortunately, all I can do is complain :(

[Bug 35638] Re: Printer is not detected properly over USB

2008-04-20 Thread quixote
I'm suddenly having major issues with my USB-connected printer. I have
a Sharp MP30 laptop (from 2005), Epson Stylus Photo R220 printer, and
running Hardy 8.04 with all updates applied as of Apr 20. (As a user,
not a developer, I don't know what the problem really is or whether this
is the correct thread.)

Before I read this thread, this was the problem: after a cold start,
everything worked, but after suspend, the system thought the printer was
unplugged. Other USB devices, like a thumbdrive, would not work
either. I have two USB ports, and either one would become nonfunctional
after trying to talk to the printer. Restarting cupsys, restarting X,
nothing worked. Only a complete shutdown and boot up made the USB ports
available again.

After I read this thread and tried some of the diagnostics after
suspending, it turned out that $lsusb or $lpinfo -v somehow woke the
port back up and it would print. So what's the deal?? Any command to
poll the printer or usb reminds the system of something and everything
works again??

Bizarre. I hope I'm not the only person with this problem and it's
something that can get sorted out. I've been using Ubuntu since Dapper,
and this is the first time anything like this has happened.

Some of the output from diagnostics:

[Bug 35638] Re: Printer is not detected properly over USB

2008-04-20 Thread quixote
I tried setting up a new printer, R220-test, with the URI as suggested.
Otherwise, same driver, etc. It worked, I made it default, printed
again, then suspended.

When I came back from suspend, the old Stylus-R220 definition was
working fine and the new default R220-test was unplugged !

$lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID :
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 04b8:0005 Seiko Epson Corp. Stylus Printer
Bus 001 Device 001: ID :

Running that command did not make R220-test become functional.

I then made the old Stylus-220 definition the default again, and re-
suspended.

Then both R220-test and Stylus-R220 come up as unplugged. lsusb shows
nothing on Bus001 or 002. But just running that command makes both
R220-test and Stylus-R220 work.

$lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID :
Bus 001 Device 008: ID 04b8:0005 Seiko Epson Corp. Stylus Printer
Bus 001 Device 001: ID :

Color me totally puzzled. Hopefully it means something to you!

[Bug 187982] Re: update-manager fails to bring up the password prompt for root privileges

2008-04-18 Thread quixote
I have this problem on Hardy Heron with all updates installed as of Apr
18, 11 am Los Angeles time. I have a relatively old Sharp MP30 laptop.
After I kill the process and retry update-manager, it just hangs before
the password window appears, so retry does not work in my case.

I get the same issue when I try to start synaptic via the menu (start-
system-admin-synaptic).

Starting synaptic via the terminal (sudo synaptic) works fine. That's
how I've been getting my updates.

Unless I'm the only person left with this problem ( I do have an odd
laptop ;) ) it seems pretty important to get this fixed before the 24th.

before the password window appears, so retry does not work in my case.

[Bug 213476] [NEW] new partition naming breaks paths

2008-04-07 Thread quixote
Public bug reported:

release: 8.04
Please note: I DON'T KNOW which package is responsible for the behavior. I'm
GUESSING:
gnome-system-tools 2.22.0-0ubuntu6

In previous releases, partitions show up in nautilus or on the desktop
using their mountpoint. E.g. /media/data/ shows up as data on the
desktop icon.

In Hardy, the same thing is showing up as 12 GB Volume. This is ugly
and for some reason rename is blanked out even for root, but it wouldn't
be a major problem by itself. However, that also seems to be the name
now expected in paths, and that's a huge problem. For instance, I
imported my old Thunderbird settings to my clean install of Hardy with a
clean install of Thunderbird. Even though in Server settings the path
to mail is /media/data/mail and even though that's the same path I get
if I browse to the folder, Thunderbird just trundles and can't find it.

I asked about this on the forum
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=748172). Apparently, it's
something in Hardy...?

[Bug 213476] Re: new partition naming breaks paths

2008-04-07 Thread quixote
Followup: it's not quite what I thought Since the default nautilus
view doesn't show permissions and owners, I didn't realize the 12 GB
Volume was owned by root, which explains why Tbird can't write to it.

There's still a problem, though. Trying sudo chown -R me /media/data
said operation not permitted. It seems like root ought to be able to
give ownership to someone else? I unmounted it and then mounted it as
a user, which changed both owner and group to that user. Then, for
instance, Tbird could write to it without a problem. But having to
unmount and remount partitions just to make them accessible to the
logged in user seems less than ideal.

Maybe I have some mistake in my fstab?
UUID-yadda-yadda /media/data vfat utf8,auto,user,exec 0 1
