Noticed two possible issues, insufficient but necessity possible.
Install doesn't check for sshd, required for MPI jobs. Passwordless
login also required, so interactive script with instructions and
warnings would seem advised.
Also on some distributions, a directory /dtemp/users is required for

Tried another PCMCIA card, this one with a VIA 6212 controller which
according to various posts works in ubuntu. (Note lspci sees it as VIA
82x or VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0.) Similar results.
Tried under KNOPPIX 5.3.1. WORKED PERFECTLY AT HIGH SPEED
AUTOMATICALLY.
During KNOPPIX boot,
moved root (made a livecd)...
apparently, rmmod ehci_hcd / modprobe ehci_hcd DOES NOT FIX THIS.

note console switching can be glitchy but after Ctrl-Alt-F1 Ctrl-Alt-F6
Ctrl-Alt-F7 desktop usually
comes back.

new variation seen with last boot parameters:
Plugging in a usb flash disk, then rmmod and modprobe ohci_hcd didn't yield
immediate "full speed" recognition but different errors with different hubs
