I believe what caused this issue is I added the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver in Additional Drivers application and then removed it. I don't think it removed it properly. I can now log into kubuntu because I reinstalled fglrx with apt-get install fglrx but when I got into Additional Drivers it doesn't show it as active.
