[Bug 1791014] Re: Upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04.1 fails

2018-09-11 Thread Reini
I did a completely new install with 18.04 so I cannot try the migration again.
You can close the issue.
It would be nice if the installer gave more information so I could find the
solution myself on the next upgrade ...
Thanks for your help.

[Bug 883324] Re: False positive: Hidden file (symbolic link to directory) cannot be white-listed

2012-05-03 Thread reini
Who is the maintainer of this package in Ubuntu ?¿?¿

According to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rkhunter, the Debian
Forensics team (https://launchpad.net/~forensics-devel) which, apparently,
does not use Launchpad...
(IOW, there doesn't seem to be anyone in Ubuntu claiming responsibility.)

According to https://launchpad.net/rkhunter, the Registry
Administrators team (https://launchpad.net/~registry). IOW, nobody in
Ubuntu really cares about this.

[Bug 963151] Re: apt-get / update-manager multiarch broke on libfreetype6 in Oneric today

2012-03-24 Thread reini
I experienced this as well, although I don't really consider it an important
bug; if multiarch is disabled, there probably shouldn't be any foreign-arch
packages installed, anyway.
To work around this bug, uninstall all foreign-arch (i386) packages.

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-10-19 Thread reini
Well, for one Live CDs tend to run drom CD, which tends to use a bucketload of
energy over time...
I'm not sure if you can compare Live CDs to other ones, but you definitely
can't compare them to a system installed on a hard drive.

[Bug 733510] Re: xine-ui freezes until DNS resolution succeeds/fails/times out

2011-09-16 Thread reini
It's definitely also happening in Debian (surprise, surprise...).
However, I'm not convinced anymore, that it has to do with DNS
resolution. OTOH I haven't gone to the trouble of trying to capture
network traffic when this occurs, so I can't be certain.

[Bug 821388] Re: ẞ ( german Umlaut upper case eszett) cannot be written in qt4 windows

2011-08-13 Thread reini
That doesn't really excuse not having it available. If I want to reproduce one
of the rare cases in which it was used, I now can't. (Spelling rules have
little to no impact on historical fact...)
If I want to follow the spelling rules, I'll just type SS - no need to
prevent me from writing it in the first place.

(Also, in current times, spelling seems to be becoming a lost art... :-P
)

[Bug 759803] Re: Unity-2d not working on KVM with xen and cirrus video devices

2011-07-26 Thread reini
I'm using Kubuntu 11.04 and am getting some really similar glitches with normal
(effects-enabled) KDE (not 100% reproducably, though). 24bpp is a really common
value for all the machines I used in the last 8 years (X has been
auto-detecting this for years). This is physical machines I'm talking about,
btw.
IIRC, it used to be a pretty standard reply that 24bpp and 32bpp were
essentially the same thing and, for some reason I never quite understood, X11
prefers the former.

I believe it is quite safe to say that 24bpp need to be supported
properly...

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-04-28 Thread reini
@Julian: From this bug's description, it's a regression from maverick, which
comes with 2.6.35. In the comment to bug #524281 you reference, the big
discrepancy is between 34 and 35, i.e. it should have been apparent in maverick
and not just have appeared in natty.
IMHO this all points to different bugs with similar symptoms.

[Bug 539898] Re: [i965gm] X server crash with KDE SC 4.4 compositing

2011-04-27 Thread reini
The issue was present up to and including maverick, at which point I did
a complete reinstall since I had previously confirmed that this would
get rid of the problem. The issue hasn't occurred for me since, even
though I seriously doubt it has been fixed in natty.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

Since I've activated KDE SC 4.4's compositing, my X server crashes every
couple of days. No advance warning, no apparent ill effects apart from
having to log back in and redo every piece of work that wasn't saved.
The screen goes blank, then switches to whatever tty was active before.
Any sound output keeps playing for a couple of seconds (3-5) and the
just stops. After I've logged back in, it takes another couple of days
  before the crash reoccurs.

The crash trace is in the .old log near the end.

[Bug 733510] [NEW] xine-ui freezes until DNS resolution succeeds/fails/times out

2011-03-11 Thread reini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xine-ui

When DNS resolution times out due to network problems (annoyingly common where
I live), xine-ui displays the blank startup screen and ignores all input until
DNS resolution actually times out.

[Bug 717292] [NEW] KDM fails to login when not using the same password for login and Private directory

2011-02-11 Thread reini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils

Steps to reproduce:
.1 Create a Private/ directory using the command ecryptfs-setup-private -w
--noautomount --noautoumount.
 2. KDM will not allow the user to login anymore. After entering the correct
username and password, the screen will blank an KDM will reappear.

Workarounds:
 1. (re)move the ~/.ecryptfs directory
 2. comment out the ecryptfs pam module in /etc/pam.d/common-session

Neither of these workarounds is satisfactory as 1. is *really* tedious
and 2. prevents other users of the system from having encrypted home
directories.

This bug has been around since I started using ecryptfs, which was either in
9.04 or 9.10 (probably the latter).

[Bug 147426] Re: G-key doesn't bring xine's control panel to the foreground in full screen mode

2011-01-30 Thread reini
There is a setting somewhere in xine, something about keeping it in the
foreground (always_layer_above in the gui section). Unchecking that works
around the issue but obviously stops stupid popups from being hidden.
In a somewhat related matter, having always_layer_above enabled will keep xine
above the popups but still give them keyboard focus, resulting in *really*
akward behaviour. I personally consider the always_layer_above option too buggy
to use because of this.

[Bug 575055] Re: Xserver crash when hitting certain keys while scroll lock is activated

using startx instead of KDM still works, even though that means no
standby, suspend to disk or power management functionality from within
KDE.

[Bug 590342] [NEW] logrotate rotates logs before analysers can parse them

2010-06-06 Thread reini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: logrotate

Since logrotate is called from anacron via the cron.daily directory,
anything that is also located in that directory and has a name after
logrotate, won't be able to access the logs rotated by logrotate.

I want to generate reports about my local squid3 installation and the
analysers I use are srg and sarg. Since they are executed after
logrotate, the squid3 log will be empty when they run, making the whole
effort an exercise in futility and annoying me with emails such as this:

/etc/cron.daily/sarg:
SARG: unexpected end of file encountered in /var/log/squid3/access.log
SARG: Keine Datensaetze gefunden
/etc/cron.daily/srg:
No logfile lines found to process!
run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/srg exited with return code 1

To remedy this, /etc/cron.daily/logrotate should be run after all other
files run by anacron.

[Bug 575055] Re: Xserver crash when hitting certain keys while scroll lock is activated

2010-05-07 Thread reini
I have tried several things to work around this problem by now:

 * adding nomodeset to the kernel parameters in grub
 * using the vesa driver instead of the intel driver
 * removing xorg.conf altogether
 * turning off DRI
 * disabling scim
 * using a different user account

None of these made a difference - X still crashes whenever the Enter
key is hit while scroll lock is behaving erratically.

I also tried installing a fresh version of Kubuntu (Lucid, 64bit
version this time) to an external harddrive and it did not exhibit
the bug. I will try to apply my current configuration to that install
over the next few days to see if I can find out what triggers the
bug.

As soon as I actually had to use the Enter key again, the next crash
occured. I also noticed that using either the enter key or pressing

resulted in the crash.

[Bug 564263] Re: No resource agents found error when starting for the first time

2010-04-29 Thread reini
Unless the system is super slow akonadi should definitely start within one
 minute,
and should akonadi terminate with error should that show up in the test
 report.

Actually, when KDE ist started, there is enough disk activity for it to
become *super* slow for more than a minute. As a result, Akonadi
regularly displays the error dialog. Adding it to autostart definitely
helped here, though.

[Bug 539898] [NEW] X server crash with KDE SC 4.4 compositing

2010-03-16 Thread reini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Since I've activated KDE SC 4.4's compositing, my X server crashes every
couple of days. No advance warning, no apparent ill effects apart from
having to log back in and redo every piece of work that wasn't saved.
The screen goes blank, then switches to whatever tty was active before.
Any sound output keeps playing for a couple of seconds (3-5) and the
just stops. After I've logged back in, it takes another couple of days
before the crash reoccurs.

The crash trace is in the .old log near the end.

[Bug 442078] Re: Buttons in Eclipse not working correctly with GTK+ 2.18.1-1

2010-03-13 Thread reini
Seeing as it seems to work for everyone else (me included), chances are
that you are doing something wrong.

Could you quickly open a terminal and issue the command:

GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 eclipse

If you aren't using the Ubuntu-provided eclipse, substitute the path to
the eclipse executable for eclipse.

If it works that way, you definitely were doing something wrong before.
If not, you have stumbled across a different bug and should report that
separately.

Yes, I also got the crashing - the buttons problem is fixed,

I managed to decrease the frequency of the crashes by forbidding
libgtk version 2.18.3-1ubuntu2.1 and by removing the KDE bespin

[Bug 513135] [NEW] MySQL logrotate script returns with error when server isn't running

2010-01-27 Thread reini
Public bug reported:

Every day, I get a mail from the cron daemon that the logrotate script
for mysql failed to run:

/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'
exists!

I don't know what the little telephone is supposed to imply, but the mail is
hugely annoying in the long run.
I only use mysql as a database for some projects I'm developing and therefore
rarely need to run it. Since this is a laptop, I prefer to keep it inactive
unless I need it. The logrotate script therefore usually can't connect to a
running mysql daemon.

I would expect the script to silently do nothing, since this is not an

Systems which actually need their mysqld will probably notice any
failures long before the logrotate script does...

This behviour (i.e. assuming that a server is running, simply because it
is installed) seems to be pretty common among Ubuntu scripts. Perhaps
re-thinking that assuption in general may be useful. It has caused quite
a few upgrade errors here.

[Bug 397230] Re: ignoredupes in HISTCONTROL does not work anymore

2009-12-01 Thread reini
Regarding comment #3: HISTCONTROL is colon-separated, not semicolon-
separated.

HISTCONTROL used to work on .bash_history. I liked that behaviour since it
minimised the .bash_history file's size allowing for more commands to be
remembered. (It also stopped duplicates from cluttering the file.)
Since there are a lot of commands that one uses rather infrequently but
regularly that are long enough so that one doesn't always want to completely
spell them out, the current behaviour is pretty annoying. It is, in fact, only
useful if one wants a log of commands entered - which isn't .bash_historys
job...

[Bug 450858] [NEW] X server crash while watching video and playing cards

2009-10-13 Thread reini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The X server frequently crashes if I watch a video using xine while doing
something else (playing cards in KPatience, programming in Eclipse, sometimes
even just switching desktops).
After the crash, kdm re-starts the X server and I can log back in.
The crash also sometimes happens while I'm simply working, although it occurrs
much more frequently when I watch video.

What happens during the crash:
The screen switches to tty1 while any sound (music, from the video, ...) keeps
playing for several seconds (3-5). After a while the X server comes back on and
the login screen is displayed.

I'm using Jaunty.

I haven't had this kind of freeze in several hours now. I have,
however, experienced another freeze where the screen just froze and
nothing reacted anymore (no mouse movement, nothing).

I believe this to be a different bug and will report it separately as
soon as I get around to it.

For now, this should count as positive feedback for the patch in the
green repository.

[Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd

2009-06-05 Thread reini
Am Freitag 05 Juni 2009 schrieb Vincenzo Ciancia:
But to clarify: does plain intrepid work for you?

Yes.

 I think there
are at least two different deadlockers in jaunty. I know this
because I have a machine with an ATI and with the intel centrino
chipset. It deadlocked a lot. Upgrading to the karmic kernel fixed
this. OTOH, I have a machine with an intel video card. Downgrading
the video driver fixed that. So are you sure you are experiencing
 the same bug?

I experience two bugs:
a) this one (where the mouse is still responsive after freeze)
b) another one (where, after the freeze, the mouse doesn't react
   anymore, either)

a) seems hasn't occured for me with the current driver since I
applied Albert's patch. It occurred quite frequently after I
downgraded to 2.4 (using the same link you provided above).
b) never really had a chance of occurring before I applied Albert's
patch (since it seems quite rare) and only occurred once since.

(I will file separate reports for these bugs as soon as I get around
to it.)

I tend to agree with you.

I'd like to point out that I tried the old (i.e. intrepid) driver
version (don't remember where I found it - it was somewhere in the
ubuntu wiki AFAIR). It didn't change the freezing problem at all
(made it worse if anything).

So switching back to the old driver isn't really a very helpful
suggestion...

That's very odd... the problem definitely wasn't around in
 Intrepid, at least for me.

Same here. It would seem that the bug was already present but not
provoked, I guess.
Anyway, since Albert posted his patch, all my problems with the
freezing issue have gone away, so I'm not switching to
Karmic/whatever until I know that there's a patch that will work on
that platform.
And Intrepid had a few other issues that I don't want to worry about
again.

[Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd

2009-06-04 Thread reini
I guess from your post that your Hardy and Intrepid were bug-free?
Because mine sure weren't...

The most annoying bugs I experienced had this nice little phrase
somewhere near the bottom of the bug-thread. I went something like
that: Please upgrade to intrepid to see if the the issue still
exists there. (jaunty, for those that existed in Intrepid).
Kinda like Bryce's response to santorc a few posts up...

Now, you tell me what to do when you experience *major*
inconveniences (e.g. network connection being dropped all the time
and no way to properly restore it - that was fixed by an upgrade to
jaunty, BTW; or this screen freezing issue) and being stonewalled
with the above suggestion...

[Bug 382625] [NEW] [Dell Inc. Inspiron 1525] suspend/resume failure

2009-06-01 Thread reini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image

Suspend/resume (to RAM) usually works, but sometimes after a lot of consecutive
suspend/resumes one will fail like this (laptop doesn't react afer lid is
re-opened). The suspend/resume cycles are usually spread over a large time

[Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd

2009-05-26 Thread reini
Neither the version in proposed (2.6.3-0ubuntu9.2) nor the one from x-swat
(2.7.1-0ubuntu1~xup~1) actually fix this bug. I can reproduce it by simply
deceasing CPU frequency as much as possible and starting up 4 glxgears. The
freeze usually occurs within one minute.
With Albert Damen's patch, the version from jaunty-proposed ran for the whole
night (6hrs) under these conditions.

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu Jaunty)

I've been running this patch (patched version 2.6.3-0ubuntu9) for
more than 24h now and haven't experienced any freezes since.

On Wednesday 20 May 2009, Albert Damen wrote:

My logs don't show any, but I think that would need further

[Bug 365527] Re: [i945g] Jaunty kubuntu freezes all the time

2009-05-14 Thread reini
Using the 2.7.1, I got an X server hang within 10 mins of usage.
The symptoms are:
 - mouse responds (movable)
 - apart from mouse movement, no other reaction could be provoked from anything
on-screen, either using mouse or keyboard
 - jaunty
 - ctrlaltbackspace doesn't work even with DontZap set to false
 - I can still login via ssh
 - The programs on the desktop still seem to be running (according to 'ps
aux'), but CPU activity is near 0%
 - The Xorg.0.log doesn't seem to contain anything suspicious (still added in
case I missed something)

I think this is a different bug, but it only occurred after I installed
the 2.7.1 driver, so it'd be nice if that wasn't added to the jaunty
repos until this is fixed.

[Bug 311895] Re: [i945] spontaneous black screen (major pipe-A underrun)

2009-02-13 Thread reini
I had to add the FramebufferCompression off to the monitor section
(see below). While the issue sometimes only occurred when watching two
videos in parallel and making some overly (KDE kicker tooltip) appear
over them, it doesn't occur anymore even when watching 4 videos +
overlay. IOW, issue closed for me. (Kubuntu 8.04.2 BTW)

2008-12-30 Thread reini
I have what appears the same problem with Hardy on my Dell Inspiron 1525 with
an Intel GM965 using the internal LCD screen (1280x800).
My hardy installation is up-to-date and my xserver-xorg-video-intel version is
2:2.2.1-1ubuntu13.8.
I have apport installed running, but there seem to be no files in /var/crash/.
