Raymond, I followed the advice given here:

to wit, add

blacklist i82975x_edac

to

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

It really did kill two birds with a stone: booting Ubuntu could take
several minutes and the sound was disabled, now both problems are gone.

[Bug 1075367] [NEW] PCI/internal sound card not detected

Public bug reported:

Sound was disabled after upgrading from 12.04. Today I did a clean 12.10
install, to no avail. The only device listed is Dummy Output. Added
here some outputs that seem to be relevant:
