[Bug 1713510] [NEW] nouveau driver crashes like once every few minutes, and whole system hangs

2017-08-28 Thread rohshall
Public bug reported:

$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=17.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=artful
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu Artful Aardvark (development branch)"

This driver is atrocious. I never have been able to use this on dual monitors,
and always had to resort to proprietory nvidia driver.
There is no trigger for this crash - it can crash anytime.

Attached is the kern.log

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

nvidia-258, available in the ubuntu repository, worked mostly. I don't
remember what didn't work. However, I can vouch for nvidia-367, which is
avalable through ppa ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa. It worked without any issues.

Re: [Bug 1573773] Re: System freezes randomly a few times a day

2016-07-29 Thread rohshall
I updated the BIOS and still the same result.
I also tried using ppa ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
.
But, still the same.
Finally, I switched to nvidia-367 drivers and it works without crashing
(though not everything works -
 gdm does not work with nvidia drivers - only xdm
)
.
Anyway, I don't like proprietory stuff and would really love to have
nouveau drivers work
.

[Bug 668673] Re: Recording does not work in Ubuntu

2010-11-11 Thread rohshall
I found out the problem. By default, the mic input is muted. I don't
know whether it is a bug or a deliberate choice to save power. if it is
trivial, feel free to close the bug.

[Bug 668673] Re: Recording does not work in Ubuntu

2010-11-10 Thread rohshall
Yes, it is reproducible.
When you have a newly installed Ubuntu, you can run the System -
Administration - System Testing and see that the mic test fails because you
cannot hear what you recorded. Of course, you can run any sound recording
program and verify it also.
I am not facing this problem now; but I am sorry to say that I don't know how
the problem got resolved.

Re: [Bug 498405] Re: emacs installation crashes

2009-12-21 Thread rohshall
Hi,

Yes, recreating the directory and appropriate files solves this problem.
I had removed /etc/site-lisp directory. After I reinstalled the
package (the name escapes me now, but it was related with lisp) which
creates this directory, I installed emacs23 again and it worked.
So, basically the problem was I had this lisp package installed, but I
manually removed /etc/site-lisp and I guess emacs23 assumed the
presence of the site-lisp directory and the appropriate files and
crashed when it could not find them.
