.cobnet, you are right! Sorry, I should have posted back here. It is still flaky, if I hit Ctl+Alt+F1 to go to a virtual console, I get a black screen. Or if I restart X, by logout/login it also goes black. So in those cases and system reboot is required. I'm glad to have confirmation from another source. Like I said, a new vanilla kernel worked around my problem. Updates on kernel-ppa... 2.6.34-020634 does not boot. 2.6.33-02063304 boots to console like 3303 did. I'd like to know how to blacklist the ATI ES1000 or give this bug report better debug output. When 2.6.33 boots the first thing it says is there is a PCI address space collision. I'm unsure how I can provide better information. I suspect upstream is moving forward, and this bug probably doesn't affect many people. This affects me too. FBDEV(0): FBIOPUTCMAP: Invalid argument Running 2.6.34-lucid (from kernel-ppa) on plain Ubuntu 10.04 i386. So, I don't think it's kubuntu or amd64 specific. It appears to be 2.6.34 on lucid specific. Xorg is using the nouveau driver but appears to be sick -- I assume this error is causing slowness in 2D acceleration. I'd love to disable it but it appears there is no BIOS option to do so. We have several of these and atleast one needs to have DVI out from an addon video card. [Bug 582414] [NEW] lucid freezes on Dell SC440 with addon video card
Public bug reported: During installation of Ubuntu 10.04 (x86) on any Dell SC440 with an addon PCI video card, boot up will freeze. The kernel parameter vga=791 allows the installation to complete. On first boot, Ubuntu 10.04 freezes about 8 seconds into boot process with black screen. Kernel parameters vga=791, text, nomodeset do not allow kernel to boot and result in no visible kernel debug output. This behavior is seen with any Dell SC440 and either ATI Radeon and NVidia addon PCI video cards. An attempt to boot 2.6.33-02063303-generic, http://kernel.ubuntu.com /~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.33.3-lucid/, was successful. It left me at the text console login prompt. Running startx was also successful. Another attempt with 2.6.34-020634rc7 was unsuccessful and behaved similar to the stock Ubuntu 10.04 kernel. How can I provide kernel debug output? I can't see it. Hi, I just installed 9.10 on a new consumer laptop, an HP DV4-1548dx. It has the above problem, with integrated audio and also with selecting a bluetooth headset. My Dell Mini9, with 9.10 (remix) works fine with Ekiga. I'm beginning to wonder if there is a hardware problem. I tried to remove pulse audio as above, but the sound applet said it could not find any devices, so I installed ubuntu-desktop again. I found the deciding factor on both the HP-DV4 and Mini9. For Ekiga to hang and use 100%, Ubuntu merely needs to have a bluetooth dongle plugged in. NO pairing needed! Happens with both laptops... and with 2 different Bluetooth dongles. One of which has no history of pairing on either install. This was very useful, I had the same problem. To be more clear, a person needs to remove -novtswitch -sharevts from ONLY one of the seat commands in gdm.conf. I'm having the same problem as VDR. Apparently the patch also causes the resolv.conf to get replaced with no server line if the OpenVPN server does not push DNS. I don't want my OpenVPN server to push DNS. --- my resolv.conf gets clobbered. (with white space) I have my OpenVPN server push DNS --- the patch above does it's job. I seem to be able to put it in this state by running VMware workstation on my workstation from my notebook. At that point VMware says something about mismatched keyboards. Apparently VMware has hooks in gnome and adjusts the keyboard. Next time I login to the workstation (head) it gives me the infamous message: The X system keyboard settings differ from your current GNOME keyboard settings. [...] Maybe this is a VMware workstation bug. Magnus: thanks for the helpful tip. I also have this exact same problem, but I did NOT do an upgrade from feisty... it was a clean install of gutsy x86_64. And English keyboards us. It seems to have been tickled when I logged in remotely, but I can't be sure. This is what I suspect caused mine: ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED] gnome-terminal I did this from a laptop with a pc101 keyboard to my workstation with a pc105. On subsequent logins on the workstation I get the dialog box.
