[Bug 1810362] Re: System completely hangs, high disk I/O when running a VirtualBox VM alongside Firefox with a few tabs open

2019-01-02 Thread spm2011
** Description changed:

Experienced complete system lockup and hang on two different machines
when trying to boot a VirtualBox VM running Fedora 29 live (no virtual
disk) when Firefox is open with a few (~5-10) inactive tabs.

  System 1:
  4GB RAM host
  1536MB guest, no virtual disk
  swapfile

  System 2:
  6 GB RAM host
  1792MB guest, no virtual disk
  separate swap partition (4GB)

  - Load Fedora in guest from live ISO

- The entire system locks up for easily 30 minutes or more, with constant
- host disk activity. GNOME shell becomes completely unresponsive.
- Requires closing the lid to attempt force sleep and resume to be able to
- regain access to the applications and GNOME shell. After resuming, VM
- seems to be usable.
+ On boot of the guest (after boot menu), the entire system locks up for

+ interacting doesn't work and the UI shell doesn't respond to mouse

[Bug 1809274] [NEW] Secure boot MOK password requested for every kernel update even when booting in insecure mode

2018-12-20 Thread spm2011
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:
 - Disable kernel secure boot (booting in insecure mode). System secure boot
still enabled
 - Update kernel with update-manager

On every kernel update, a dialog appears asking me to enter a MOK secure boot
password for temporarily disabling secure boot.
See screenshot

When I reboot, the MOK config screen appears, but I can just ignore it and it
boots fine, since secure boot is already disabled in the kernel.
Which makes me wonder why it even needs to ask me to enter a secure boot
password every time I update the kernel.

Expected: only ask for a secure boot password on update if it actually
needs to disable kernel secure boot, and kernel secure boot is not
already disabled.

Note that the output of mokutil --sb-state
SecureBoot enabled

However, kernel secure boot is disabled and the system GRUB bootloader
prints a message "Booting in insecure mode" on startup

[Bug 1808631] [NEW] Wireshark no longer finds vboxnet0 interface

2018-12-15 Thread spm2011
Public bug reported:

vboxnet0 was available on the list of interfaces in previous sessions,
now it is missing even when a VirtualBox VM is running. Refreshing with
F5 has no effect.

ifconfig has vboxnet0 listed.

User is a member of wireshark group

I think a system update or update to VirtualBox 5.2.18 may have changed
something that caused this.

This causes a crash that forces a hard log-out, closing running applications
and losing unsaved work.
That is unacceptable for a stable LTS system (Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS).

[Bug 1805753] Re: Windows on external monitor are inaccessible after disconnecting HDMI

2018-11-30 Thread spm2011
I've also noticed that after disconnecting, if I drag windows to the
right, they go off the laptop screen and become inaccessible from the
screen.

So it seems it isn't properly detecting that the HDMI is disconnected
(from laptop)

This is an extremely annoying and astonishing usability issue.

Expected: on disconnect, windowing reset to normal primary mode, moving all
windows back to the active screen

Workaround: opening Displays Settings forces reset

[Bug 1796397] Re: DuckDuckGo search icon is blurry, low resolution

2018-11-28 Thread spm2011
@osomon are you sure ?

The icon in /usr/lib/firefox/distribution/searchplugins/ ddg.xml is
different than the one in https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/raw-

normal in Fedora 29.

Could the snap be loading the icon from the distro locale that has the
old icon ?

[Bug 1805753] [NEW] Windows on external monitor are off main screen after disconnecting HDMI

2018-11-28 Thread spm2011
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:

 - Connected to 1920x1080 monitor HDMI (LG 22MC57HQ-P)
 - Dragged windows to monitor display
 - Disconnected HDMI from laptop after resuming locked session

Program windows that were on the monitor display stayed off the screen
after disconnecting, could not be dragged back even with GNOME dock ->
"All Windows" displaying the preview. Had to reconnect to the monitor
and manually drag them back to the laptop screen.

It sounds like others have had this issue:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/665709/how-to-recover-offscreen-window-after-disconnecting-second-monitor
https://superuser.com/questions/382165/connect-and-disconnect-a-monitor-in-ubuntu/1215472#1215472

Expected: disconnect from external monitor detected by windowing system, always
moves all windows to the active screen automatically.

[Bug 1738399] Re: Wrong package version

2018-11-09 Thread spm2011
This is not a bug in the package. Unfortunately, the version of
smartmontools does not match the version number given in smartctl.

smartmontools 6.6 was released in 2017-11-05, after the date given by
smartctl 6.6 -
https://www.smartmontools.org/browser/tags/RELEASE_6_6/smartmontools/NEWS

@ahasenack The Ubuntu package could be updated to 6.6 however.

[Bug 1801380] Re: Right side of window and menu area is duplicated every time on first run

2018-11-08 Thread spm2011
Happened again, this time when opening firefox right after gnome-
terminal was opened and moved to the right side of the screen. The
terminal window portion can be seen in the firefox window area.

Dragging and remaximising Firefox fixed the window.

[Bug 1801380] [NEW] Right side of window and menu area is duplicated every time on first run

2018-11-02 Thread spm2011
Public bug reported:

Every time I open Firefox with previous session tabs the first time
right after logging in, the usable portion of the window is shrunk, and
the right side of the window with the last tab, menus, and extension
icons is duplicated on the right side of the window. (See screenshot)

Closing and reopening Firefox almost always fixes the issue. I may have
had this happen once on a non-first run after resuming.

Started happening recently I think in 62.0.3

[Bug 1800500] [NEW] Default Crop mode is confusing

2018-10-29 Thread spm2011
Public bug reported:

>From https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/shotwell/issues/68

Steps to reproduce:
 - Open an image in Shotwell with default config.
 - Select Crop tool
 - Select area to crop, try to drag crop area horizontally.

What was actually happening

Crop tool uses Square mode by default, which prevents horizontal
adjustment. This is an astonishing behaviour.

The expected behaviour

When I crop an image, the crop tool uses Unconstrained mode by default.
This is the sane default, found in every other image editor I have used.

[Bug 1796397] [NEW] DuckDuckGo search icon is blurry, low resolution

2018-10-05 Thread spm2011
Public bug reported:

Firefox 62.0+build2-0ubuntu0.18.04.5 amd64

To reproduce:
 - Set search engine to DDG
 - Go to the new tab page.

The DDG search icon is very low resolution and looks like it hasn't been
updated with the new logo.

Expected: Use the icon built into Firefox

[Bug 1782216] [NEW] Faster release updates

2018-07-17 Thread spm2011
Public bug reported:

Is there a reason why it can take a month from when a stable Chromium
version is released for the Ubuntu package to be updated ?

67.0.3396.99 was released almost a month ago, 67 has been stable even
longer, and Trusty - Bionic still have not been updated to the latest
release version. The last few releases have been delayed by several
weeks from the upstream stable release.

This seems like a long release delay especially for a high-risk
application such as a browser and when compared to the Firefox package's
release times.

Can the maintainers prioritise faster release times, considering this is
a high-risk application with regular security updates ?

Thanks,

[Bug 1776326] [NEW] Uninstalling VLC removes libdvdread4 which breaks other DVD playback

2018-06-11 Thread spm2011
Public bug reported:

vlc bionic-updates 3.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 amd64
4.15.0-22-generic #24-Ubuntu

To reproduce:
1. Install vlc with DVD playback support (libdvd-pkg)
2. Install another DVD player application, e.g. Kodi
3. With DVD playback working, sudo apt autoremove vlc

Actual: apt autoremove vlc removes libdvdread4 package, breaking DVD playback
in other media applications.
Reinstalling libdvdread4 and rebooting restored playback in kodi.

Expected: Keeps libdvdread4 installed so DVD playback can still function
in other applications.

[Bug 1716289] Re: DuckDuckGo Default Search URL is insecure

2017-09-11 Thread spm2011
@osomon Yes, you are correct, my mistake. This is a Linux Mint specific issue,
moving over accordingly.
I can't find the specific LM package / code that contains the search engines.

** Package changed: chromium-browser (Ubuntu) => linuxmint

[Bug 1716139] [NEW] Remove "Ubuntu" identifier from User Agent strings

2017-09-09 Thread spm2011
Public bug reported:

The Chromium and Firefox builds add an extra Ubuntu identifier in their
user-agent strings. The inclusion of the OS name is unnecessary and
could contribute to user fingerprinting.

Other distros such as Fedora do not add their name to the distro browser
builds' UA as far as I can tell, and google-chrome UAs do not reveal OS
distro version info.

chromium-browser:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Ubuntu
Chromium/60.0.3112.113 Chrome/60.0.3112.113 Safari/537.36

Change to:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko)
Chromium/60.0.3112.113 Chrome/60.0.3112.113 Safari/537.36

Firefox:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:55.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/55.0

Change to: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:55.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/55.0

In Firefox the build ID can identify the package build anyway so it
isn't necessary to have the distro in the UA string.
