[Bug 454551] Re: Karmic: screen corrupted with ATI radeon driver

2009-11-14 Thread stek79
Hello,
I created a new xorg.conf file in /etc/X11 with the content you pasted but,
after logging out, X doesn't even start!

I had to log in through the console and remove the file, then X started
again.

Maybe it should contain some other directives?

Thanks

[Bug 469593] [NEW] Freshly installed karmic doesn't boot - acpi=off not set in grub.cfg

2009-11-01 Thread stek79
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Hello,
I've just installed Karmic on my laptop.

In order to boot, I always had to include a acpi=off directive to
grub. Due to this fact, I've chosen this option on the Karmic CD and
installed the system.

Nevertheless, the first reboot left me with an unusable system: only a
blinking cursor - which I recognised as the classic symptom of the
acpi=off parameter not set.

Fortunately, the next reboot grub let me modify the command line, so I
added the directive and the system booted ok. Later on I modified
grub.cfg and run update-grub.

So it seems that ubiquity doesn't set the boot options on the installed
system.

Let me know if you need any other information!

BTW, wonderful release guys!

[Bug 456400] Re: (karmic) can not connect to DSL either system wide or local setting

2009-10-25 Thread stek79
Same problem here guys,
NM can't connect to internet through DSL connections.

I've verified that DNS resolution works, though. Ping and web surfing
does not.

Interesting thing is that a simple 'pppoeconfig' brings the connection
up full and working. So it is not a hardware problem.

Let me know if you need any other information to sort this out.

Congrats for the wonderful work guys!

[Bug 383295] Re: update-manager hangs on Jaunty

2009-06-21 Thread stek79
Hi Christoph,
the dir you mention is empty.

Too bad I don't have a way to reproduce this bug, since actually I've
not done anything particular. It is a fresh install though. Only thing I
did is to install on an ext4 partition, but I don't think this might be
a problem.

Looking at the file:

/var/log/dpkg.log

I can see that the last package update of this laptop was on 6 June!
Even security fixes are not installed, given that I still have Firefox
3.0.10:

$ dpkg -l firefox
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Cfg-files/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Nome   Versione   Descrizione
+++-==-==-
ii firefox3.0.10+nobinon meta package for the popular mozilla web bro

This is really a serious problem, if people cannot get security updates.

I attach the last dpkg.log, let me know if there is anything more I can
do to track this down.

Laptop is an Olidata ACL 10.

Thanks!

[Bug 383295] [NEW] update-manager hangs on Jaunty

2009-06-03 Thread stek79
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Hi,
I'm experiencing some update-manager hangs on one of my laptops with Jaunty
freshly installed.

As you can see from the attached screenshot, the update-manager pops up,
I choose to install the proposed packages, but it stays grey
indefinitely - it doesn't even ask me the password for the
authentication.

This is problem doesn't always occur, in fact yesterday I updated the
system with success.

I've taken a look at my .xsession-errors and found something
interesting, I'm attaching that too.

Let me know if you need other info!

Thanks

Re: [Bug 328621] Re: Evolution: exchange email auto completion suddenly stops working

2009-05-08 Thread stek79
Thank you Pedro,
I really appreciate you bug squashing work.

I've continued to use Ubuntu despite casual difficulties with Exchange. I
really can't say where is the problem, but I think this is hard to solve,
since MS stuff is involved.

Ubuntu 9.04 made a radical change in that respect, since Evolution now
supports MAPI directly - whereas now Evolution connects to Exchange via web
interface.

I would really love to do the switch, too bad I'm hearing that this MAPI
support is still very limited and buggy, so being my production machine, for
now I prefer something more stable.

Nevertheless at home I've converted all my PCs to JJ and I think it is
simply AWESOME.

So I don't really know how to help here, I don't even know how to reproduce
this issue...

Thanks, see you soon.

2009/5/8 Pedro Villavicencio pe...@ubuntu.com

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 9.04? Thanks in
 advance.

Status in “evolution-exchange” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: evolution-exchange

 Hi,
I'm using Evolution with Exchange server in our organization.

What I'm finding is that, at random times, evolution email auto-completion
stops working. I start typing some email addresses, but it doesn't complete
them. The only remedy is to close and restart evolution.

I tried sniffing network traffic and I found something interesting.

The exchange server actually provides some reply but evolution-exchange
don't read the data. The socket queue is filled, and netstat reports high
RECVQ. Also from tcpdump I see a zero windows annouced from my PC, meaning
that the socket queue is full but the application process don't read it.

It is very likely that during such issues evolution-exchange hangs for some
 reason.

[Bug 373399] [NEW] Please add 'fio' to ubuntu universe

2009-05-07 Thread stek79
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I would be very glad to have in ubuntu repositories one of the best IO
performance testing tool out there, fio.

Its author doesn't need any presentations, since it is Jens Axboe, the
maintainer of the linux kernel block level, author of CFQ IO scheduler
and blktrace.

You can find it there:

Public bug reported:

Hi,
it would be very good to have the tool 'smem' into ubuntu repositories.

Its aim is to shed some light into process memory consumption, in a way
that no other program is able to do.

Its author is Matt Makart, a known linux kernel hacker. See here for the

Re: [Bug 246099] Re: Screen corruption while scrolling gnome-system-monitor process list

2009-05-05 Thread stek79
Hi Phil,
this is not a solution to this bug, but what about trying the nouveau
driver?

It's opensource from scratch and is included in Jaunty.

Too bad up to now 3D is not supported, but if you use 2D-only stuff like me,
I think you'll be quite happy.

I'm using it on a couple of PCs and so far I'm very happy, no issues found.
And it solved also some screen corruption issues I was having before with nv
and close driver.

If you want to give it a try:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=ubuntu_904_nouveaunum=1

2009/5/5 Phil Ayres ayres.p...@gmail.com

This is a bug for me. My configuration is a Dell Latitude D800 using
NVIDIA proprietary driver version 96. I tend to get horrible scrolling
performance in any Firefox that is graphically rich (or maybe that's
Adobe Flash doing that) , but nothing that corrupts like this.

System Monitor: 2.26.0.1 running on Jaunty 9.04. Previously 8.10 was
 equally bad.

Re: [Bug 217580] Re: Slow performance with Gmail

2009-05-03 Thread stek79
Sorry Alex,
I didn't checked the linked bugs actually!

I'm very glad that eventually we all have been able to track this down!

I'm not sure this might be a driver issue, IMHO. So far there have been
reports of users with Nvidia, Intel and ATI cards (fglrx, see first post of
Mozilla bug 422330). A friend of mine keep telling me about this slowness on
ATI + radeonhd, also.

I think that users that own older PCs tends to notice this much more - my
CPU is a 1.6 GHZ AMD Athlon, and scrolling is VERY slugghish. At work I use
a much more recent notebook with ATI + radeon, and the scrolling slowness is
still there, but a bit less relevant.

So, we've likely found the long standing bug that is affecting us, good. On
bugzilla I see the status is NEW, and no more activity since August 2008.

Alex, is there something we can do to speedup this bug fixing? Perhaps
aatdark work can be useful, since it provides a clean testcase? Will FF 3.5
still have this bug?

Thanks

2009/5/2 Alexander Sack a...@jwsdot.com

Did you find that gmail uses this kind of element? This might point
 directly
 to a firefox bug?

well. i already said above that fixed positioning is known to have
performance issues (and i gave bugzilla IDs above for them); besides
from that its also a driver issue, because it works better with some
drivers; the fact that other browsers dont hit this, doesn't mean that
 the drivers are right.

 Here's some hard performance data.

I've measured Xorg and firefox CPU consumption in two scenarios:

 1) System completely idle
 2) Firefox open on gmail, only 1 tab, no firefox extensions, scrolling down
this launchpad thread fully expaned with mouse wheel.

In both cases I've recorded CPU utilization, 10 top recordings every 5
seconds each of the two processes. Command line:

 top -b -n 10 -d 5 -p $(pidof firefox),$(pidof X)

I'm attaching the two top logs. Two noteworthy things to point out:

 1) CPU fully saturated (constantly 100%) when scrolling in gmail!
 2) Process responsible for this is Xorg!

See the attached logs. One important thing: I'm using nouveau now in
Jaunty. Later I'll redo the recordings with nv and possibily NVIDIA closed
drivers. I don't think it is a matter of driver though, I've opened this
slowness bug when I was using Intrepid with nv and the situation was the
 same.

Now, next step could be to profile the driver and see where the time is
spent. Anyone willing to dive into this with me? I'm willing to profile this
workload, if someone can guide me.

 2009/5/1 phinn phinn...@gmail.com

Because it's not entirely an Nvidia bug either. My IBM T60 laptop draws
Firefox pages perfectly smooth with crappy ATI X1400 card compared to my
high end PC, its ridiculous. However, If you try Opera or Webkit based
browsers in Linux this problem does not occur. It is only between
 Firefox + Nvidia.

Yea, there should be some kind of bug report filled with Nvidia for sure
though. As both Firefox and them are to blame.

driver.

It seems a little bit better, Xorg draws a little less CPU consumption
compared with nouveau, but it is still the bottleneck as you can see.

I've profiled the system while executing the previously described
workload.

Attached you can find oprofile output.

Even though there are no symbols (I guess I need debug packages for that),
it shows where the time is spent.

Alex, let me know if symbols might be interesting to track this down.

2009/5/2 aatdark bernhardr...@inode.at

although xorg uses all the cpu time it must be a firefox bug because opera
qt does not show any of this issues.
Is this an xulrunner or an firefox bug ?

Sounds like this might be the culprit.

Did you find that gmail uses this kind of element? This might point directly
to a firefox bug?

Thanks, great work!

Too bad I don't think this bug is considered anymore :(

I can confirm Firefox @ Jaunty running VERY SLOW on very long sites.
My hardware: Nvidia GTS 250 CPU E6600 2GB RAM.

I testet opera linked with qt3 and it is running extreme fast. No lag at
 all.
So this must be a problem either with gtk or with geko engine.

Re: [Bug 229745] Re: after fix for #215728 - Committing to urlclassifier3.sqlite still causes excessive CPU usage and disk I/O (the 2nd)

2009-04-14 Thread stek79
Hi,
I've just done that, reinstalled my machine by putting ext4 on / (and
/home) and keeping my data on a separate ext3 partition.

I can only say one word: WOW!

Jaunty coupled with ext4 is super fast. Previoulsy my disk was pretty busy,
especially during startup, with a lot of IO activity. I watch IO activity
all the time, since it is actually my bottleneck.

After the upgrade, I almost _NEVER_ see any IO activity!!! I suspect ext4
delayed allocation is the key here, along with the fact that I reinstalled,
my previous filesystem had certainly some fragmentation (upgraded since
Gutsy).

So I would suggest anybody to deploy a similar approach: ext4 on / and data
in a separate ext3 partition.

Furthermore with Jaunty I noticed that preload is not necessary anymore, it
seems that the filesystem cache is already primed. Many application start up
much faster!

I have a 8-years old PC with 512MB of RAM that now feels like a new
machine.

My best congratulations to all the devs :)

Thanks for that hint. I need clarification on the ext4 filesystem:

  1. Will it be an option in jaunty?

Yes, from what i can recall its available as an option in the jaunty
installer. However, its still not 100% finished (which is reflected by
the fact that its still not the default for us).

  2. Is it enough for the root partition / to be ext4 or should the /home
  partition also be ext4?

The write operation happens on your /home partition, so migrating that
to ext4 should help. However, remember that with ext4 keeping regular
 backups is even more important.

Yes, there is still some heavy disk I/O going on. It's no where near as
bad as it was before the update. This patch is a HUGE
improvement, but it still happens from time to time causing Firefox to
become unresponsive for a few seconds.

actually I've just measured some firefox heavy IO activity, but as Nick
reported, it is a matter of seconds and in my case it doesn't make the whole
system irresponsive as it was before the patch.

Luckily I had disktop running, so here is the output. I can say that the
the slowdown that I felt was probably due to the large write of 5.5MB in 5
seconds you can see at 18:28:31 - some random IO activity I guess.

after having viewed a video with mplayer! The only thing left to do was to
kill X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, since the computer becomes unusable.

I've found a way to reproduce that error.

 1) Download this HD movie (I don't know if this particular video is the
problem, but at least with that it occurs):

 http://anon.nasa-global.edgesuite.net/qt.nasa-global/ksc/ksc_061108_glast_launch_720p.mov

 2) Play it with mplayer.

 3) Close the video window.

Please let me know if you need more info to fix this! I've found that with
other players (VLC, totem) this do not occur.

Hi,
I've not noticed any more delay recently.

You can check if IO is the problem by keeping open a terminal with the
following command running:

# pidstat -d 10

Every 10 seconds, prints a stat of the most IO intensive processes.
Take a look at the output when FF hangs, and post the results.

pidstat is part of sysstat package.

Thanks!

Guys,
I've verified that this problem is not related to evolution at all.

It is an OWA bug! Same problem accessing my web mail!

So you can close this bug, Exchange is the real culprit here.

 Hi,
I finally figured out a what seems to me critical bug about evolution.

Since when I migrated to Ubuntu I've noticed that some received mails just
happen to disappear when I click on them to see the body.

A friend told me that evolution is known to be affected by a serious bug,
and actually it was the bug I was experiencing!

It is very simple to reproduce: simply send a mail with an ampersand in the
subject. Receive it with evolution and try to read it. I'll discover that
the mail just can't be read, since it disappears as you click on it.

I hope it will be fixed soon, we've lost tracking of important mails due to
 this bug.

Hello Sebastien,
   I' using an exchange account.

When I click on the email, for a fraction of a second I can see the
following message appear in the main windows:

I've checked my .xession-errors but no log entry is done when the problem
occurs.

I've not checked gnome bug tracking system, if you want I can have a
look.

Thanks

thank you for your bug report, what account type do you use (imap, pop,
etc)? do you get any warning on the command line when getting the issue?
do you get the issue with all the emails using that char? do you know if
there is an upstream bug about the issue somewhere?

2009-02-18 Thread stek79
Hi stat,
I'm looking forward to see the results!

Only suggestions is that perhaps this is not the right place to publish
them, maybe a blog post is more appropriate.

Have fun with the benchmarking :)

2009/2/18 stat maibpen...@gmail.com

 HI:

I agree it isn't all that easy but since I have the machines to play around
with I am going to take my main machine (the one I am experiencing the
issues with and install Win 7 and then use the Richard's python script
(cross platform) as described on the site you linked to. It is pretty
 funny
since I had created an outline of what I was going to do from the very site
you mentioned, what are the odds. I already have just about everything put
together. The difference for me of course will be that I will be using my
8.1 install as is and will perform those tests first (excluding the install
tests) and then redoing them using Win 7 and the same hardware. I have all
the tools I need including using a couple of Aspire ones and a DNS-323 that
I will use to measure throughput externally. I believe that by following
what they did on Tuxradar, connecting some separate machine tests etc. I
should be able to get a true test and relatively close to the true picture
 of things.

Once it is done I will post somewhere (here?) my steps and what results I
got. If my plan is flawed let me know, I am open to listen and am hoping
 to
get this done this weekend (it's good to be a lonely geek :) Kind of
looking forward to this, despite the work it entails and the fact that I
will have to turn my xbmc box into a production machine temporarily :(

Re: [Bug 216878] Re: [regression]Slow disk transfer rate on Hardy

2009-02-16 Thread stek79
Hi Zhang,
  you're welcome.

It is actually possible to get very high performance from SATA disks,
comparable to those of SAS or SCSI, by using a technique called
short-stroking.

If you understand the mechanics of the disks, you can actually build a
system with very low latency. You can get this by placing the most accessed
files on the outer zone of your disk, thus getting the max rotational speed
and reducing head movement.

This way you can greatly reduce the arm movement and get higher throughputs!
:)

2009/2/16 ZhangInSeattle yzhang...@gmail.com

 Hi Stek79,

 Thanks for your reply!

I understand the hdparm result is the best possible speed. But the
difference between 42.84MB/sec and 5MB/sec still shocked me.
It kinda implied that the file system (I'm using ext3) needs more
optimization to store big files in the way the hard disk can sequentially
read (with minimum arm movement). (I don't know much about ext3, maybe it
 did the optimization already).

My laptop (thinkpad t61) is purchased in October 2008. It has a SATA
disk. It should have a much better performance than 5MB/sec imho :-)

 Thanks!

Re: [Bug 216878] Re: [regression]Slow disk transfer rate on Hardy

2009-02-16 Thread stek79
Hello Zhang,
this is a common issue, and is not related to Linux.

It is important to understand the testing that we're doing and how a
rotational disk works.

hdparm test the _sequential_ transfer speed, which is the speed at which
data can be transferred from sequential sectors.

Real life data transfer can be much lower indeed - as you've measured -
since disks are mechanical parts, they have a moving arm inside. This
implies that if your workload is random (as opposed to sequential), you end
up with another bottleneck, which is arm movement. This slows down your
throughput to 5 MB/s.

If you generate a pure random workload for your disk, you'll see that you
can barely reach 1-2 MB/s! You can try that issuing a:

$ find / -ls  /dev/null

and watching disk stats with

# iostat -x 10

Bye!

2009/2/15 ZhangInSeattle yzhang...@gmail.com

My situation might be related to this bug:

I bought a Thinkpad T61 in last October. I erased Vista and installed
Ubuntu 8.7 and later upgraded to 8.10. The disk speed seemed slow. I
tried the following command to test the real read speed:

 $ date; cp a_100_MB_file /dev/null; date;

The copying takes about 20 seconds. So the speed is about 5MB/sec.

But when I try to use hdparm to test the read speed, the result is like
 this:

 $ sudo hdparm -t /dev/sda

 /dev/sda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 130 MB in 3.03 seconds = 42.84 MB/sec

Can anybody tell me why the real read speed is far from the 42.84MB/sec?

Status in linux source package in Ubuntu: Triaged

 Bug description:
 Hi,
upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy I've seen a considerable HD transfer rate
 slowdown.

I have a machine with two IDE disks, both are udma5 capable. In Gutsy, they
were recognised as 'hd[ab]' and I with hdparm sequential thoughput was:

 /dev/hdb:
  Timing buffered disk reads: 172 MB in 3.01 seconds = 57.19 MB/sec

which is quite correct for that kind of drive.

In Hardy, they are recognized as 'sd[ab]', and the performance regarding
transfer rate is LESS THAN HALF:

 /dev/sdb:
  Timing buffered disk reads: 78 MB in 3.01 seconds = 25.92 MB/sec

That slowdown is visible also during file transfer operations, obviously.
One thing I've noticed is that in the dmesg, my drive is set at UDMA/33, and
also hdparm reports that udma2 is currently configured:

 sudo hdparm -i /dev/sdb

I've seen a number of users complaining about that, a number of bugs with
status Incomplete or Release Fixed. I can say that with the latest Hardy
patches (as of now), the problem is still there. Will that be fixed before
the final release? If not, that can be a huge performance penalty!

Here are some infos. I'm willing to help to solve the problem, just ask if
 you need any info.

[Bug 328621] [NEW] Evolution: echange email auto completion suddenly stops working

2009-02-12 Thread stek79
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-exchange

Hi,
I'm using Evolution with Exchange server in our organization.

What I'm finding is that, at random times, evolution email auto-
completion stops working. I start typing some email addresses, but it
doesn't complete them. The only remedy is to close and restart
evolution.

I tried sniffing network traffic and I found something interesting.

The exchange server actually provides some reply but evolution-exchange
don't read the data. The socket queue is filled, and netstat reports
high RECVQ. Also from tcpdump I see a zero windows annouced from my PC,
meaning that the socket queue is full but the application process don't
read it.

It is very likely that during such issues evolution-exchange hangs for
some reason.

[Bug 303691] Re: Intrepid, print broken with Minolta PagePro 8L printer

2009-02-09 Thread stek79
Hi Till,
I've experienced twice an error during printing.

It is not a matter of image corruption, but in those times the printer
did not print at all.

A small windows told me too many failed attempts.

I attach the error_log, it seems to be a Bad Request problem.

Please note that they're pretty random. For example, now I've turned on
the laptop to print a document. I got the error. Then I printed again,
and it worked.

Can this be related to the applied changes? It looks like a different
issue.

Ok Till,
I'm happy that we finally sorted this out!

them!

stek79, thank you for confirming that all relevant bugs in foomatic-
 filters are now fixed.

The SRU on foomatic-filters is completed and verified now. The package
 can be moved to -updates.

Note that this bug report has still to be open as an SRU request for
CUPS, as the proposed SRU with the fix in the pdftopdf filter has not
yet arrived in -proposed. So, stek79, please stay tuned for the next
CUPS upload into -proposed. We will inform you on this bug report and
ask you test then to see whether the patch has really made it into the
enew package and other fixes in it will not break your printing. Even if
you are already able to print now with the new foomatic-filters and my
pdftopdf binary, we will also need your confirmation on the new CUPS
 package. Thank you in advance.

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: foomatic-db

 Hi,
with Intrepid I can no longer print correctly with the said printer.

In particular, what happens is that the page is printed, but the margins
are wrong. It seems that the page is printed with zoom, the fonts are huge
and the page does not fit the paper. Printing for example the ubuntu test
page, I see the top left corner aligned correctly, but I cannot see the
other three corners since the page is like zoomed. On the top right corner,
I see the ubuntu logo, and on the right paper edge I see the 50% label of
 the various colors.

One important fact I discovered is that this happens with the recommented
driver, which is Foomatic/ljet2p. If I choose the other avalable driver,
which is CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.0-rc1, the printing is correct!

Let me know if you need other info to track this down. Basically a single
test page print should be enough to determine if the bug is solved, since
currently the printed page doesn't fit the corners at all.

I don't actually know what is causing this.

Now I've tried to open the share and I get the error. Even after reopening
the share and exploring it inside the nautilus window, I continue to get the
error (if I click on the bookmark, the connection is always successfull).

Let me know if there is some log to consult in order to track this down!

I've tried to sniff the network, but I don't see any package generated when
I click on the icon. If I open the share clicking on the bookmark, instead,
I obviously see traffic flowing.

[Bug 303691] Re: Intrepid, print broken with Minolta PagePro 8L printer

2009-02-01 Thread stek79
Till,
  sorry for the inconvenience.

I've redone all the tests. To be sure about the results, I've configured
five queues with distinctive names:

- PagePro-8L-Gutenprint
- PagePro-8L-ljet2p-300
- PagePro-8L-ljet2p-600
- PCL-4-Printer
- debug (ljet2p, 600 DPI)

I can confirm you that the problem is with the PagePro-8L-ljet2p, both
600 DPI and 300. Printing with the 300 DPI resolution, actually there is
only a small black square dot near the top left, but the page is not
centered correctly. Gutenprint is and has always been ok.

Interesting news is that the PCL-4-Printer, with ljet2p, prints ok! Page
well centered with no weird characters.

You can find attached the new error_log. The test print is the Job 80.

Also I attach the new printout, to the print debug.

One important note, perhaps I haven't been clear about this point
previusly. The previous print pictures I attached (DSC0070-low) was a
direct cat output.pcl /dev/lp0 of YOUR output.pcl, and it was BROKEN
too (as you can see).

[Bug 303691] Re: Intrepid, print broken with Minolta PagePro 8L printer

2009-01-31 Thread stek79
Hello Tim,
here are the results of your requests.

a) Attached you can find a picture of the print of your output file. As
you can see, it is not correct:

1) there are those weird chars
2) it is not vertically centered

b) Yes, the paper I've used was blank

c) How can I print some straight text to the printer? I've tried
something like:

cat /etc/hosts /dev/lp0

but the printer keeps blinking with no printing at all

d) Yes, the pdftopdf is the dummy one. Here it is:

cat /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf
#!/bin/sh
cat $6

e) You can find in following attachments both the /tmp/printout and the
error_log.

f) I'm using a 32 bit system

Thanks for the help.

2009-01-30 Thread stek79
Hi,
  I'll test it.

In every case, my problem is the pdftopdf file, which belongs to cups:

d...@sdoni-laptop-dev53:~$ dpkg -S /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf
cups: /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf

So in other words, I can't reproduce the bug fixed with this last
release.

2009/1/30 Martin Pitt martin.p...@ubuntu.com

There is an updated version which fixes a regression:

  foomatic-filters (4.0.0-0ubuntu0.2) intrepid-proposed; urgency=low
  .
   * debian/patches/foomatic-rip-segfault-on-jcl-merging.patch: Fixed
segfault of the JCL merging process on long JCL command lists
(LP: #321164). This was also reported on the Intrepid SRU
 4.0.0-0ubuntu0.1 in LP: #318614.

Can you please test this version instead/again, and report back here?
 Thank you!

 Hi,
with Intrepid I can no longer print correctly with the said printer.

[Bug 303691] Re: Intrepid, print broken with Minolta PagePro 8L printer

2009-01-30 Thread stek79
Guys,
 I've tested the last foomatic-filters.

There is a problem, the output is a bit scrambled. Size is ok, but I
find some weird chars at the top of the page, see attached pictures.

I have checked if the previous test page is ok (when I told you that it
was printing correctly), but I found them here too. They are small, I
missed them since I was mainly looking at the page size, which were ok.

I've tried to switch to the gutenprint drivers, just to see if they
print correctly, and the do.

Can this be a problem of the dummy pdftopdf filter? I don't remember to
have ever had such a problem, previously.

Thanks guys.

2009-01-29 Thread stek79
I think I have the same problem,

Hope this helps!

[Bug 322449] [NEW] transmission-daemon doesn't consider settings.json

2009-01-28 Thread stek79
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: transmission-cli

Hi,
I've installed transmission-daemon on my machine in order to control it
from remote.

Everything works well but the fact that the settings.json configuration
file is not obeyed.

As a startup script, since it is missing from the ubuntu package, I've
used the suggested one
(http://trac.transmissionbt.com/wiki/Scripts/initd)

In my TRANSMISSION_HOME I've put the settings.json file, which has the
following content:

{
rpc-enabled: 1,
upload-limit-enabled: 1,
upload-limit: 20,
peer-port : 9091,
rpc-whitelist: 127.0.0.1,
}

What happens is that the upload rate limit is not obeyed. In particular,
Transmission seems to not read the file at all, since in the GUI I see
the unlimited setting. When I limit the upload rate using the GUI, it
works correctly.

[Bug 159065] Re: Alarm does not work properly

2009-01-22 Thread stek79
Update guys,
   now the alarms are working!

Yesterday I've done two changes:

1) Enabled alerts, which were off by default. Check Evolution Preferences -
Calendar Tasks - Alerts - Show a reminder...
2) When I received a calender, I clicked on the showed combo box and choosed
Import to calendar
3) Clicked Accept

I'm not sure if the second action is actually useful, previously I just
clicked Accept but no alarm fired.

After the change (Enabled alerts), yesterday I tried to create a fake
appointment, but not alarm fired again.

Today, just after booting my pc, I was pleased to watch my first
Evolution alarm, alerting me of an imminent meeting!

So I can say that now the alarms works for me, I suggest to try the
mentioned steps!

Bye!

 the various colors.

[Bug 317490] [NEW] gnome-power-statistics seems to stop data graph

2009-01-15 Thread stek79
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Hi,
I've just installed a fresh ubuntu Intrepid into my laptop at work.

I've keep open gnome-power-statistics in a separate workspace, just to
look at power consumption.

I've noticed that it seems to stop the data graph at some time. For
example, today I powered on my laptop at 9 AM and opened up g-p-s.

Now, at 3 PM, g-p-s shows last data point at 3h30, as you can see in the
attached screenshot. No more data is plotted since some hours, actually.

If I generate an event, for example unplug the AC, then the graphs
suddenly animate again and it show power consumption again.

Furthermore, also see that in the bottom right of the screen saver you can see
a white square (which is a data point I guess) outside of the drawing area.
Let me know if any other info is needed.

Re: [Bug 216878] Re: [regression]Slow disk transfer rate on Hardy

2009-01-07 Thread stek79
Hal,
  it is just the opposite.

This bug is not present in Hardy, but it is there in Intrepid.

The fact that you notice an improvement, IMHO means that you are not hitting
this bug actually.

2009/1/7 Hal halbo...@verizon.net

This bug seems to be fixed in 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex). All systems I
reported above exhibit improved performance in 8.10 as well as several
more with Compact Flash adapters. A Fix for this in Hardy would be good
to allow continued use of an LTS system.

 /dev/sdb:

I've seen a number of users complaining about that, a number of bugs with
status Incomplete or Release Fixed. I can say that with the latest Hardy
patches (as of now), the problem is still there. Will that be fixed before
the final release? If not, that can be a huge performance penalty!

Here are some infos. I'm willing to help to solve the problem, just ask if
 you need any info.

[Bug 314358] [NEW] 'ubuntu-bug -p linux' redirects me to a non existent launchpad page

2009-01-06 Thread stek79
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

Hi,
I've just had a kernel lockup on my Intrepid Ubuntu.

Searching for the correct way to report this, I've seen that the wiki
suggests using:

$ ubuntu-bug -p linux

So I did, but after the data collection, firefox is redirected to a
wrong launchpad page, so the result is that this is actually useless.

The URL on which ubuntu-bug redirects me is:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+filebug/9pYf8pj539SpOCGCOoAucMXsZKj?

and the error that LP gives is a Page Not Found:

Lost something?

There’s no page with this address in Launchpad.

Check that you entered the address correctly.

[Bug 314362] [NEW] Intrepid kernel lockup

2009-01-06 Thread stek79
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I've just experimented a kernel lockup.

Here is what I did. I was surfing the net as usual, as a NIC I have a
USB wireless card (see lspci attached). I had the need to upload some
pictures taken with my camera.

So:

1) I unplugged my USB wireless card
2) I plugged my USB cable connected to the camera
3) Downloaded the pics
4) Unmounted the camera
5) Unplugged the camera
6) Plugged the USB wireless card again

After the 6th step, the system was freezed. No more input to any key.
I've not tried Sysrq though, I read about it after the reboot :)

However, I can tell you that two of my keyboard leds were blinking. What
does that mean?

I attach the relevant data, albeit into kernel.log. I've not used
ubuntu-bug -p linux since that didn't work (I just opened a new bug for
this).

Any other info, just ask, I'm willing to help!

Bye!
