[Bug 925296] [NEW] 11.10 fails to boot from usb with Boot Error

2012-02-01 Thread thearthur
Public bug reported:

I downloaded ubuntu-11.10-desktop-amd64.iso and attempted to make a
bootable USB drive to install it with.

I used two different (both new) USB drives and tried with both usb-creator-gtk
and unetbootin to boot both a desktop and a laptop. in all cases I simply get a
black screen with Boot Error before grub starts.
I also tried creating the image with 11.10 and 11.04

one clue is that I see this message on (only) one of the systems I tried
to use to create the image

[Bug 909869] [NEW] xmonad crashes on start after upgrading to 11.10

2011-12-29 Thread thearthur
Public bug reported:

when upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10 the libffi5 package is deleated.

if you are upgrading and used xmonad on 11.04 then xmonad will try to use the
already compiled
xmonad-x86_64-linux in ~/.xmonad that was build from xmonad.hs before the
upgrade. This binary
will still be linked against the libffi5 package and will try to open
libffi.so.5 and then crash because
the file does not exist.

home/arthur/.xmonad/xmonad-x86_64-linux: error while loading shared
libraries: libffi.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory

this is easily fixed by logging in with unity and deleting the compiled
files

rm ~/.xmonad/xmonad-x86_64-linux ~/.xmonad/xmonad.o ~/.xmonad/.hs

it would be nice if the post-install step of the .deb package would remove
these compiled files on upgrade
with a command such as this:

rm -f /home/*/.xmonad/xmonad-x86_64-linux
rm -f /home/*/.xmonad/xmonad.o
rm -f /home/*/.xmonad/xmonad.hi

These could be cases where this fails to find users (with non-standard
directories) and it may be safer to ensure that
~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs exists to ensure that the user is actually using xmonad
(though this may not be required)

these already compiled binaries will never work and can always be automatically
rebuilt to deleting them seems
both wise and safe, as well as much more convenient.

Description: Secure distributed filesystem
Tahoe, the Least Authority File System, is a distributed filesystem that
features high reliability, strong security properties, and a fine-grained
sharing model. Files are encrypted, signed, erasure-coded, then distributed
over multiple servers, such that any (configurable) subset of the servers
will be sufficient to recover the data. The default 3-of-10 configuration
tolerates up to 7 server failures before data becomes unrecoverable.
 .
Tahoe offers provider-independent security: the confidentiality and
integrity of your data do not depend upon the behavior of the servers. The
use of erasure-coding means that reliability and availability depend only
upon a subset of the servers.
 .
Tahoe files are accessed through a RESTful web API, a human-oriented web
 server interface, and CLI tools.

Re: [Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.4.1

2008-11-25 Thread thearthur
It seems to me the .deb should include no plugins, or as close that as
possable. and have a plugin manager that hooks into eclipse's plugin manager
and causes, perhaps upon first use (ie if no .eclipse dir exists), the main
plugins to be installed for that user. This would be able to remain
consistent on a multi user system where one user wishes not to ever update
anything, and the other user wishes to keep everything current.

Probably in a perfect world it'd be possible to override the default
