[Bug 2048472] Re: [24.04 LTS] AMD driver-errors on E-350 APU during boot

2024-02-26 Thread thom
I found new info:

First, this errormessage always pop up with all AMD drivers on newer
kernels.

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2874

Most important takeaway from this is the comment of Alex Deucher: "All
of these are variable sized arrays so these are false positives."

Although innocent, it may needlessly worry a lot of people that
encounter it for the first time.

  AMD Ryzen 5 + RX570 (desktop)
  Thinkpad T420 i5 (laptop)
  AMD A4 (laptop)
  intel N4200 SOC (laptop)
AMD Turion x2 on NV2 chipset (laptop)

}
All are running up to date ubunutu-MATE 20.04 LTS

I couldn't get it to crash on any of them :-)
no really, it is rock-solid. More than it ever was.

Seems to me that this bug can be closed.

I havent used mate-dock-applet in years, bet let's test:

Give me a few days so i can abuse the hell out of it in the meantime.
;-)

If it crashes, I'll report immediately.

Is there anything you would like me to do immediately after it crashes ?
(like sending logs, running apport, running other tools)

If it hasn't crashed by friday, I'll let you know immediately.

[Bug 1805129] Re: appmenu-gtk-module makes glade crash

2021-02-04 Thread thom
I toyed around a bit based on the post #11 from Alkis Georgopoulos
(thank you for that, vala-panel-appmenu.sh is indeed the culprit, that was
really really helpful)

One solution is change the exec line in the desktop file like: env
GTK_MODULES=glade glade %f
this is one solution that works.

But I think a better solution would be to delete /etc/profile.d/vala-
panel-appmenu.sh altogether because the environment variables
GTK_MODULES and UBUNTU_MENUPROXY are both not in use in Ubuntu-MATE and
AFAICT for GNOME-Desktop only.

I deleted /etc/profile.d/vala-panel-appmenu.sh
It works without problem and I think it is a bit more elegant.

Could/should the file /etc/profile.d/vala-panel-appmenu.sh be marked as a
conflict against mate-desktop-environment package ?
In that case it would only be installed if the desktop is NOT Ubuntu-MATE

[Bug 1909806] Re: [pluma] text autohyphenated on word wrap with pango >1.43

2021-01-01 Thread thom
This bug, it seems, has been willfully created by Matthias Clasen and Behdad
Esfahbod
who, driven by linguistic purism, seem to be blissfully unaware of the effect
on unimportant minor usecases like e.g. code editors, filemanagers, scientific
software etc. They call this bug a 'feature'.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/pango/-/issues/401

This 'feature' broke already Caja, Pluma, Nautilus, Gedit and probably
some more.

Is it possible to disable this 'feature' at the source ?
or better:
Is there a pango patch to change this 'feature' from opt-out to opt-in ?
(i.e. default 'off' instead of default 'on' )

I can add the info that:
1) Older versions of glade (i.e. 3.18) that worked before, crash with the
current library set.
2) the snap version of glade does work on Ubuntu MATE focal.

[Bug 1858593] [NEW] Brisk crashes spontaneously when invoked

2020-01-06 Thread thom
Public bug reported:

This only happens when brisk is immediately invoked just after closing a qt/kde
application.

Waiting a few seconds between closing a qt/kde application and invoking
brisk won't trigger the crash.

This happened with every brisk version (since the first version of
brisk) on my desktop (AMD Phenom II x4 965BE). It doesn't happen on my
laptop (Intel N4200).

[Bug 269441] Re: Trash always full

2019-12-16 Thread thom
I can confirm that this bug is still in ubuntu-mate (version 19.10).

when unmounting external drives without emptying trash, the trash icon
stays on "full" forever (until the next login)

Expected behaviour would be a re-evaluation of the trash state of the
mounted devices after any mount/unmount of any drive

This papercut has reached the respectable age of 11 years which, of
course, is getting a bit embarrassing. :-)

I don't know where the trashcan code hides (somewhere in caja ?)
I might try to give it a shot if I knew more. Tips anyone ?

Dell Precision 5510

since ugrade from 16.04 to 17.04 this bug happens to me.

Currently I'm on the latest kernel from the standard release:
4.10.0-21-generic #23-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 28 16:14:22 UTC 2017

Tried it with

SSD PMM951 NVMe 256 GB
SSD 960 PRO M.2 512 GB

Behaviour as already describes:

FS becomes read only, then full stop a few moments later.

Once I was able to make real screenshots, because a console was left and
somehow half operational.

[Bug 1575652] Re: PXE install prefixes /cdrom to squashfs location, fails to find it

2017-05-04 Thread Thom Yorke
I tried installing "live-installer" following Steve Langasek (vorlon)'s
instructions for the fix but it says the package cannot be found?

[Bug 1575652] Re: PXE install prefixes /cdrom to squashfs location, fails to find it

2017-05-03 Thread Thom Yorke
This bug is still plaguing me. I tried the hack of editing the initrd
and it did not fix the issue. Apparently there is a proposed test
package fix but I do not know how to apply it. I don't even see the
installer TRYING to access the filesystem.squashfs file when I check
ctrl-alt-f4. I'm completely at a loss here, I've been banging my head
against the wall for days trying to fix this. I've tried uploading the
squashfs file to a server, I've tried serving it from the tftp server ,
this is all after the hack mind you, and no joy. If someone could please
help I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

[Bug 1660636] [NEW] ^F does not open search (and other broken keys)

2017-01-31 Thread Thom
Public bug reported:

Since latest firefox upgrade, ^F (ctrl+F) no longer opens search.
Instead, it scrolls to next tab. The edit meny still shows that ^F
should search as one would expect.

In text boxes ^F however does work correctly, and advances one
characters (unlike ^N, which seems to have been completely stolen, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1660380)

As I'm writing this, it also appears that shift+arrows no longer select
text in text boxes, only move the cursor, so something is horribly wrong
with the keybindings.

Installing the Firemacs extension doens't help either. Ctrl-N is
completely stolen by something in Firefox even after disabling the
horrible window creation binding. No problems in other programs.

from history in the address bar, but it no longer does. It used to. Now

[Bug 1660380] [NEW] ^N stopped working

2017-01-30 Thread Thom
Public bug reported:

On the latest firefox update, ctrl-n stopped working as a key to move
one line down in text boxes. It now fires up a screen full of new
windows. Installing the Keybinder extension I managed to disable this
horrible Windows-like waste of good keys, but ctrl-n still does not work
in text boxes. It used to. ctrl-p, ctrl-b, ctrl-f, ctrl-e, and ctrl-a
work like they should.

[Bug 1479136] Re: [ubuntu 14.04.2] Artefacts in radeon driver on kernel 3.16 and upwards

2016-08-30 Thread thom
@Ivan: There is a slight possibility that the patch could work for you
(I don't know because I don't have that hardware). You could test by
installing kernel 4.7 from mainline.

The probable cause of the flickering is PLL-resonance which only seems
to affect LVDS and only on older GPU-chips. It is mitigated by switching
off the fractional divider of the PLL when an LVDS is connected, which
is exactly what the patch is doing for chips like RS780/880 (R600) and
older.

@everyone:
The patch is in kernel 4.7 now so there is no need anymore to post your results
here. Thank you all very much for what you posted thus far; It turned out to be
quite helpful.

If the patch is not working for you, you are probably hitting a
different bug. Please commit a new bugreport in that case.

[Bug 1613100] [NEW] Autologin for guest account fails

2016-08-14 Thread Thom Mayor
Public bug reported:

I researched and read extensively yet cannot find much information or
similar reports about lightdm failing to autologin the guest account.

lightdm version is 1.18.2

I am using the lightdm-gtk-greeter and have removed the unity greeter as
it did not allow the gtk-greeter to function.

The guest session uses a template defined in /etc/guest-session/skel,
which is a symbolic link to user "patron-template" using home directory
patronTemplate.

Any other pertinent information can be found in the logs attached.

[Bug 1479136] Re: [ubuntu 14.04.2] Artefacts in radeon driver on kernel 3.16 and upwards

2016-06-21 Thread thom
Before I forget:

What can I do to get the patch incorporated in the current LTS release ?
(Xenial 16.04)
According to Christian König the patch is backwards compatible with the 4.x
series kernels.

I've tested it (compiled against 4.4.0.26) and it works without problem.

Who do I have to contact to get this patch into the current 4.4 series ?

2016-05-08 Thread thom
OK, about the bisect:

c2fb3094669a3205f16a32f4119d0afe40b1a1fd is the first bad commit
Date: Sun Apr 20 13:24:32 2014 +0200

drm/radeon: improve PLL limit handling in post div calculation

This improves the PLL parameters when we work at
the limits of the allowed ranges.

I reverted this commit (I got some good working tips from Chris
Bainbridge), tested the result with the kernels 4.4.0-rc1 and 4.6.0-rc6+
and the problem is completely gone. I ended up with a good stable and
rock-solid display output without artefacts.

I could test against some other kernels if any of the devs here would
like me to do that.

2016-05-02 Thread thom
Mrerexx, I can confirm this... I have the EXACT same laptop model (I rarely use
nowadays) and just checked it.
Indeed this model still has the same problems with the newer kernels.

Since this is an upstream bug, please follow this link [
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=83461 ] and mention it there.
I don't think many people (or developers) have hardware vulnerable to this bug
so you might be asked to test some patches.

In a few days I hope to be able to add some information there myself.

[Bug 1479136] Re: [ubuntu 14.04.2] Artefacts in radeon driver on kernel 3.16 and upwards

2016-03-04 Thread thom
According to bugzilla:

32167016076f714f0e35e287fbead7de0f1fb179 seems to be the first bad
commit

bug seems to affect only the RS880 series and older

Christian König proposed a patch to limit the reference divider to fix
this and it seems to work.

Alex Deucher has committed it upstream
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=72edd83cc9e5819ed1ee771519143d7594e059f0

Hope it will land soon in Ubuntu.

it looks like it is driver-independent.

2015-07-29 Thread thom
Okay, I narrowed it down to this:

Running on bare recovery console without Xorg : no problem
Running on bare normal (??framebuffered??) console without Xorg: blipstorm

The difference seems to me a loaded kernel driver...am I correct ??

If so, I could try out some new drivermodules or patches if you want me to.
( I have never patched or compiled kernel modules so I think I need a bit of
hand-holding with this one )

[Bug 1479136] Re: [ubuntu 14.04.2] Artefacts in radeon driver on kernel 3.16 and upwards

2015-07-29 Thread thom
Hi, thanks for looking into this.

I just installed the meta packages xserver-xorg-lts-vivid ( --install-
recommends) and linux-generic-lts-vivid and rebooted

Running now:
Xorg X Server version 1.17 (1:7.7+7ubuntu3-trusty1)
vmlinuz-3.19.0-25-generic with options radeon.dpm=1 vt.handoff=7

the info I get from the xserver-xorg-video-radeon-lts-vivid package is:
Version 1:7.5.0-1ubuntu2-trusty1

However, I still have the 'blipstorm' on my screen.
Do I have the right kernel/Xorg/radeon-driver combination or are there any
tweaks I can try ?

[Bug 1479136] [NEW] [ubuntu 14.04.2] Artefacts in radeon driver on kernel 3.16 and upwards

2015-07-28 Thread thom
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu-Mate 14.04.2

This is what I get if I run a kernel newer than 3.13:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nx2-Fvihzxg
sorry for the link, I just don't know how to describe these artefacts verbally.
(a storm of small horizontal moving blips from right to left ??)

Those artefacts appear as soon as new kernel is selected in GRUB, and
remain during the whole session.

The lastest kernel (from the main repository that is) working without
artifacts is v3.13.0.59. All later kernels have artifacts. All later
kernels also are either -utopic or -vivid instead of -trusty, but
I do not know if it is related.

GPU: Mobility Radeon HD 3200 (RS780M)
System: Ubuntu Mate 14.04.2 32-bit

Kernels tested: 3.13.0.59 (and earlier) , 3.16.0.45 , 3.19.0.25
Only 3.13.0.59 (and earlier) are without problems.

** Affects: virtualbox (Ubuntu)

2015-05-07 Thread Thom Slattery
Thanks. I gave them a call, but then I noticed a new BIOS was posted.
Unfortunately it looks like I'll have to reinstall Windows in order to
flash it. I did not see anything directly related to this in the release
notes, but I'll give it a try.
I think I must get some sleep :P. I don't remember if it was specified
supported or not befor. Anyways I will contact them tomorow, I think
the problem is old enought to have a definitive answer. Now it's bed
time ;)

[Bug 1441852] Re: Audio broken on HP Spectre x360, broadwell-U audio controller

2015-05-06 Thread Thom Slattery
@Gabriel: Have you heard anything back from HP Support yet? I just got a
Spectre x360 and (obviously) have the same lack of audio. I have started
a case with HP, but just wanted to check if there was any progress or if
there was anything specifically I should tell them. I'm new to bug
tracking.

[Bug 1286588] Re: pcmanfm uses 100% cpu to draw two different desktops using arandr

Another workaround:

1) boot the system without the external monitor connected
2) after boot and login, connect the external monitor

Strange that the physical (electrical) presence of the monitor during
boot triggers this bug.

[Bug 1301843] Re: Terminator window shrinks while trying to reduce font size with CTRL - in split window

2014-08-31 Thread Thom Porter
Don't know if it's related, but recently (last week or so) I've had it
re-size when I open it, nothing else. The first few times it went to a
few pixels wide, maybe 10. More recently it seems to stop around 90px.
For me it's width only, height remains the same.

If it makes a difference, I was trying out different desktop gui's,
unity's so darned heavy... I tried: lubuntu-desktop, awesome xfce4
(settled on xfce, but the bug occurs in unity too.)

[Bug 1272720] Re: sometimes boot fails

2014-04-16 Thread thom
@Tima, yes that is correct, I have some dkms package installed that
needs the headers. I do have the linux-generic package installed and
it also pulls the headers in. The problem was that it consequently
installed the headers *after* processing dkms.

Since the last few updates, the problem seems to be solved upstream. (
Now running kernel 3.13.0-24-generic at the moment).

Still, I would consider this an real bug, especially because the
postgres error is misleading and incomplete.

SHMALL is measured in pages, whereas SHMMAX is measured in bytes. They
shouldn't be set to the same values as one another.

[Bug 1272720] Re: sometimes boot fails

2014-02-07 Thread thom
UPDATE

After installing linux-headers-3.13.0-7-generic manually
and re-installing linux-image-3.13.0-7-generic
the problem seems solved.

Not that I fully understand what happened but nevertheless... :-)

2014-02-06 Thread thom
Addendum:

Booting the previous 3.13.0-6-generic will continue to boot but shows the
firmwre not responding error briefly.
The update that triggered the regression was:

During upgrade this warning appeared twice:

dkms: WARNING: Linux headers are missing, which may explain the above failures.
please install the linux-headers-3.13.0-7-generic package to fix this.

Even though there were no further failures in the log I installed linux-

[Bug 1272720] Re: sometimes boot fails

2014-01-30 Thread thom
Additional info:

When problem occurs, this is the output:

[ 17.200131] b43-phy0 ERROR: Microcode not responding
[ 17.200140] b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the
correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all
instructions on this website.
[ 17.200367] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan2: link is not ready

I can start lightdm manually after that. X will start and the b43
driver seems to work properly.

I can attach the dmesg.log that I saved for this occasion if that is
helpful.
