[Bug 461583] Re: Grub2 not updated after kernel upgrade.

2010-01-07 Thread tuxo
I have the same problem with a newly install and updated Kubuntu Karmic
9.10 on a 64bit machine.

Issuing uname -a gives the following result:
Linux lagoon 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009
x86_64 GNU/Linux

However, I have the following kernels installed via the security updates:
[~]dpkg -l | grep linux-image
ii linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic 2.6.31-14.48
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.31 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.31-15-generic 2.6.31-15.50
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.31 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.31-16-generic 2.6.31-16.53
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.31 on x86
ii linux-image-2.6.31-17-generic 2.6.31-17.54
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.31 on x86
ii linux-image-generic

Note that even though I rebooted the machine, still the old kernel
(linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic) gets selected. At reboot time I checked
out the grub2 menu and found that linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic is the
only boot option, even though I have newer kernels installed. Hence, I
tried to manually update grub2 then:

[~]sudo update-grub
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Searching for default file ... found: /boot/grub/default
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-17-generic
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-16-generic
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-15-generic
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
Found GRUB 2: /boot/grub/core.img
Found kernel: /boot/memtest86+.bin
Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done

Ok, looks good. Doing a less /boot/grub/menu.lst

Shows me the new kernels were added to the list. However, rebooting the
machine, grub2 does not display the new kernels and instead reboots with
the only option in the list, namely, linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic.

[Bug 461583] Re: Grub2 not updated after kernel upgrade.

2010-01-07 Thread tuxo
Thanks a lot for the quick reply, Felix!

Looking through my packages, I saw that grub2 was not installed but was
at state rc. Strange, I thought that grub2 was installed already given
that I installed Karmic, overwriting an existing ext4 root partition
(not updating the system via the update mechanism), only keeping my home
partition from a previous Jaunty install.

Issuing a sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop did not pull in grub2 as
a dependency either. Hence I installed grub2, which pulled in grub-pc.
Rebooting and everything is fine now. So I don't know whether this is an
expected behavior. I thought that newly installing a system onto an
already existing ext4 root partition would use the new grub2.

Thanks again!

[Bug 499782] [NEW] Special boot parameters of Live CD not carried over to installation

2009-12-23 Thread tuxo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Kubuntu Karmic, 9.10
System information: CPU: Intel Core i5, Bios Version: 0711

On the computer specified above we were not able to start the Live CD
correctly. It hanged during the booting process, leaving only a black
screen with a blinking cursor.

Providing a special boot parameter via F6 at the Live CD prompt
(acpi=off) allowed us to boot up the machine correctly. However, after a
successful permanent installation onto the harddrive, the computer
didn't boot up correctly (we ended up again at the cursors blinking on
an otherwise black screen). In order to solve this problem, we had to
manually provide the necessary boot parameter to Grub2 via the following
procedure:

sudo fdisk -l (to list the devices)
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo chroot /mnt
nano /etc/default/grub (add acpi=off to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT entry)
update-grub
sudo umount /mnt/dev
sudo umount /mnt

Given that Ubuntu states that it is Linux for human beings, we would
have assumed that the Live CD installer would automatically take care of
this situation and install Ubuntu to the the harddrive the way the Live
CD was booted. The user could be warned during the permanent
installation process about the necessary change to the Grub2
configuration and presented a choice if the installation should install
with or without the provided special boot parameters.

However, I encountered three problems:

1) Uppon reboot, the camera did not work anymore.
2) Pluging-in a second webcam did not produce a /dev/video1 in addition to the
/dev/video0 used by the on-board Genesys webcam and thus the plugged-in camera

[Bug 159421] Re: ATA exception on resume from sleep

2009-06-20 Thread tuxo
The problems of freezes after waking up from suspend continued for me
for many months after my comment at the end of 2008. Recently, the
computer froze on me at one point and which needed a hard reset. After
rebooting, smart monitor (smartmontools) did not report any problems and
I completed short and long harddrive checks without encountering any
errors.

Hence, opened up the the laptop, took out the harddrive, cleaned the
SATA contacts and put it back in. This seemed to improve the situation
for some days. However, delays appeared again later on. I was very
uncomfortable with this situation and did not trust the harddrive
anymore. Hence, I bought a new SSD drive to replace it. While I was at
it, I switched from Hardy 8.04 to Jaunty 9.04 (new installation). So
far, I haven't had problems anymore.

It seems like this problem was caused either by

1) Faulty connections / contacts
2) Bad or dying harddrive
3) Problem with the hardy heron kernel given my setup (SATA controller,
harddrive make)

Hence, I cannot help to nail down this bug any further.

desktop (that's how I configured it in the screensaver configuration window).

What happened instead
While watching the movie, the screensaver started up and locked the screen.

[Bug 375891] Re: [kubuntu] OpenOffice Impress: Movies do not play

2009-06-15 Thread tuxo
If anyone has a suggestion of what to do here and how to make it fit
onto the cd I am open to the idea.

As I suggested above, when inserting a movie with an unsupported format,
a pop-up window could provide the user the choice of installing the
necessary packages if wanted (via the relevant repository). A package
suggests mentioned within the package description is simply not a
solution for human beings as it is hardly discoverable.

Apart from that, the default openoffice install does not even support
non-patent encumbered ogg theora files which I find just not acceptable.
Why not support at least these out-of-the-box? Non playable movie files
is one of the main reasons why everybody uses powerpoint at my
workplace.

[Bug 375891] Re: OpenOffice Impress: Movies do not play

2009-05-18 Thread tuxo
Ok, I investigated this problem further and found out that by installing
the package gstreamer0.10-plugins-good, I was able to listen to mp3
and ogg vorbis files as well as inserting them into OpenOffice Impress
slides. Furthermore, installing the package gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
allowed me to watch avi movie files as well.

While this solved my original problem, I think this is not the way it
should be. A novice or casual user would probably not have found out how
to solve this problem, given that OpenOffice did not tell the user what
was wrong (e.g. via a pop-up) and neither proposed to install the
missing packages for the user. I think that OpenOffice should do the
latter or, alternatively, should automatically install at least the
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good package via a dependency.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Excellent attitude. Look, there are people out there who earn money

What about *fixing bugs* instead of waiting for upstream to bring out a

There was no fix released for KDE 3.5.

What about Hardy Heron 8.04? It is an LTS version and you forget about
all those people that have production machines running using the KDE 3.5

ready for prime time and will not be for at least another year.

Can this bug not be retargeted at Hardy Heron 8.04?

Re: [Bug 25896] Re: After hibernate, sound doesn't work

2008-07-03 Thread tuxo
The previous guide worked fine for me! Thanks!
I am happy to hear this!

Actually, later on I found out that with the 3stack-dig driver the headphone
was not working anymore. Hence, I tried the 6stack-dig driver. All of a sudden
I had more controls in the audio mixer applet (KMix under Kubuntu but I guess
this should be the same in Ubuntu). Surprisingly, there was no volume slider
for the headphone and via alsamixer I could not activate the headphone slider
either. However, I have a surround slider now and strangely this one regulates
the headphone output. So both the speackers and the headphone work now, also
after suspend.

As mentioned beforehand, I have a Littlebit Sepia X35 (equivalent to an Asus
Z37E) notebook computer.

[Bug 25896] Re: After hibernate, sound doesn't work

2008-07-02 Thread tuxo
I was able to fix my sound problem in up-to-date Hardy Heron following a
guide from the German magazine FreiesMagazin
(http://www.freiesmagazin.de), June 2008, on page 19:

1) Create the following file: /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.modprobe
2) Append at the end of the file following entry: options snd-hda-intel
model=3stack-dig
3) Append at the end of the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base following entry:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig
4) Edit following file: /etc/default/acpi-support and change the following
entry:

# Add services to this list to stop
# them before suspend and restart
# them in the resume process.
STOP_SERVICES=alsa

5) Reboot your computer

After this, sound worked for me after suspend to ram and hibernation.
Note that the model in the above entry has to match the sound chip in your
computer. Intel high definition audio (HDA) allows for different chips to be
used. Your chip can be found via following command:

$ aplay -l

A list of drivers can be found in following file:

$ zless /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz

There are usually several options, try them all to find your matching
driver.

OS: Kubuntu / Ubuntu Hardy Heron
Hardware: Core2 Duo T7300, Intel Santa Rosa, i965 graphics chipset
Laptop: Littlebit Sepia X35 (Asus Z37E)

I tested this update first with a Hardy Heron 8.04 live CD and then on
my existing Hardy Heron 8.04 installation (in order to do so I removed
my previous xorg.conf file). It worked perfectly in both cases! This
update fixes the bug for me, thanks a lot!

[Bug 201257] Re: i965 TVout quirk needed [1043,8265]

2008-05-01 Thread tuxo
The Hard Heron 8.04 Live CD still has this bug and the panels in Gnome
do not span the whole desktop. All my reported assessment so far have
been done using Live CDs.

Ok, now I upgraded my installed Gutys Gibbon version to Hardy Heron. As
I still used the vesa driver, things were looking normal. In a next step
I moved the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file away and did a sudo dpkg-reconfigure
-phigh xserver-xorg to regenerate a new xorg.conf file with the native
intel driver and rebooted the computer. KDM appeared and I logged in.
The screen turned black and stayed black. I heard that the desktop was
being loaded while the harddrive was busy (I am using the KDE dekstop
here but the same is true for the Gnome desktop).

So what happened is that the display was apparently shown on my non-
existing TV out output while my screen stayed black. Not good. What I
did next is to generate by hand a new xorg.conf file, adding the
workaround proposed by wjl and rebooted. Now everything works fine. I
attach my xorg.conf file for those being interested.

I still hope that this bug will be fixed during the live time of Hardy
Heron.

Thanks for reporting. According to Bug #152416 this issue was fixed
after release of Hardy Alpha 6 so if you have tested only the Live CD it
is possible that your issue is already fixed. You can update the Intel
driver package on the LiveCD with the command sudo apt-get update and
then sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel and an X restart
with ctrl + alt + backspace.

[Bug 131646] Re: TVout is interfering with screen resolution on Intel graphics

2008-02-25 Thread tuxo
Unfortunately, this bug is still there in Ubuntu Hardy Heron Alpha 5.
Both the login screen (gdm) and the desktop panels do not show up
correctly. Regarding the latter, see the attached screenshot.

My laptop contains the Santa Rosa Platform with the intel i965 graphics
chipset. The problem seems to be the interfering TV output as can seen
by the output of xrandr:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 1280
VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 286mm x
179mm
   1280x800 59.9*+ 60.0
   1280x768 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x60060.3
   640x48059.9
TV connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 30.0*
   800x60030.0
   848x48030.0
   640x48030.0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

As can be seen, the native resolution of the screen is 1280x800 while
the TV ouput is at 1024x768. As can be seen on the screenshot, the
panels are confined to the latter resolution, while the wallpaper spans
the native resolution. The funny thing is that this laptop does not even
have a TV output.

[Bug 77059] Re: MP3 Support is Broken In Feisty

2008-01-15 Thread tuxo
Maybe it is time to close this bug, if nobody else complains about it.
It seemed to appear only in ubuntu 6.10 and/or 7.04
Deleting the .xine folder solved the problem

Well yes, deleting the .xine folder solved the problem. However, does
the .xine folder get deleted automatically by somebody upgrading to a
newer version of Ubuntu? It was surely not the case with the upgrade
from Dapper-Edgy. The hint that one has to delete a hidden folder will
only be useful for those finding this bug entry. Don't expect normal
computer users to be able to do that. They will give up before and
declare that Ubuntu does not work on their machine.

[Bug 155490] Re: [gutsy] Screensavers don't start automatically in Kubuntu

2007-11-25 Thread tuxo
I can confirm this bug as well. My laptop has been updated from Feisty

it with the vesa driver, as the native driver does not work for me

[Bug 160820] Re: frets on fire poor framerate

2007-11-17 Thread tuxo
My machine seems to be a bit underpowered for this game (Dual 933 MHz
PIII with 1 GB of RAM, ATI X1050 Graphics card). However, a newer
version downloaded from the official homepage allows to play this game.
However, the version of fretsonfire included with Gutsy is just
unbearably slow.

It would be nice, if a newer version of fretsonfire could be backported
for Gutsy.

[Bug 146191] Re: iwl4965 does not work after resume

2007-11-08 Thread tuxo
I have the same problem as the original poster. Up-to-date Gutsy Gibbon.

[Bug 146191] Re: iwl4965 does not work after resume

2007-11-08 Thread tuxo
I investigated unloading network modules prior and reloading after a
suspend operation. Hereby, I modified following file:

/etc/default/acpi-support

and added iwl4965 iwlwifi_mac80211 cfg80211 to the MODULES part:

MODULES=iwl4965 iwlwifi_mac80211 cfg80211

With this, I managed to get the wireless working after a suspend
operation. However, it worked only once. The many other times I tried,
the network was frozen after suspend anyway.

I hope that a solution can be found for this problem and updated driver
will be backported soon for Gutsy Gibbon.

For now I am back to using ndiswrapper that works mostly. However, it
gave me occasional freezes and often CPU softlocks during booting in
the past. So this is not a solution either.

[Bug 160309] Re: X crashes when idle

2007-11-07 Thread tuxo
I also get

(EE) intel(0): I830 Vblank Pipe Setup Failed 0

error messages in my Xorg log file. After a boot, X comes up and I can
log in via kdm or gdm [1]. However, after typing the password the screen
goes black. The desktops are being loaded (true for both KDE and GNOME
as I hear the login sound and mail notification sounds) but the screen
is completely black and stays black.

Hence, I am forced to using the vesa drivers that give me a correct
resolution (1280x800). My display controller is a GM 965 (Santa Rosa
platform).

[1] Here already I noticed that the the login manager window is not in
the center but shifted to the left. This is probably related to the bug
#140999, as with the Gutsy Live CD I also get the GNOME and KDE panels
shifted to the left, not taking up the whole desktop.

[Bug 19767] Re: Kde help search fails too quietly if htdig is not installed

2007-11-05 Thread tuxo
The KDE helpcenter (KDE version 3.5.8) still has no working search
facility after the release of Gutsy Gibbon.Apparently, the reason is
the missing htdig search system that is not installed as it is not
maintained anymore. As has been mentioned 9 months ago by another poster
in this bug report, Strigi might be an alternative to htdig, especially
that it is now included by default in Gutsy. I really hope that this bug
gets some attention. I have seen more than one new Kubuntu user that
tried to use the search facility of the KDE Helpcenter and becoming very
frustrated.

[Bug 38303] Re: no visible indication that a long-running fsck is taking place in background

2007-09-10 Thread tuxo
This bug is flagged as wishlist, however, it is serious regarding how
non-linux savy people react to it. When an fsck happens, most people
think the machine has frozen on them and press the reset button, just to
fall back to the black command prompt on the next startup. As a short
term solution, I would suggest to provide at least a feedback to the
user to be patient and showing a graphical progress bar in the same
style as the graphical boot screen. Like this the user knows that the
machine has not crashed but is doing maintenance work.

Ok, this bug can be closed. Rebooting the router and the cable modem

as my laptop, featuring another wireless card, never had problems with

[Bug 136860] Re: Wireless broken by recent update (1.9.2007)

2007-09-03 Thread tuxo
I have further investigated, whether the updated kernel is at fault for
my loss of wireless. Instead of the new 2.6.20-16-generic kernel, I
booted with following older kernels (via the grub menu list), that all
used to work:

2.6.20-15-generic
2.6.20-11-generic
2.6.20-10-generic

However, none of them brought my wireless connection back to life. I
remember that there were other incoming updates together with the newer
kernel, maybe one of these is at fault? See the attached dpkg.log file
for the updated packages prior to the hiatus.

[Bug 136860] Wireless broken by recent update (1.9.2007)

2007-09-02 Thread tuxo
Public bug reported:

Ever since I updated our two computers recently (1.9.2007) with the
usual security updates, wireless is broken. Both computers are running
Kubuntu Feisty Fawn and feature a Ralink RT 2500 wireless PCI card.

I have also tried to manually bring up the network as follows:

sudo iwconfig ra0 essid myessid
sudo dhclient ra0

with following result:

Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.0.4

No DHCPOFFERS received.
No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.

Both computers were capable to use the Ralink wireless cards, although
not in combination with the KNetworkManager. I had to add following
parameters in the /etc/network/interfaces files in order to make the
Ralink wireless cards work:

iface ra0 inet dhcp
wireless-essid myessid
auto ra0

Note that my wireless network is running fine, as I use it currently to
write this message from a laptop that runs also Feisty Fawn, but
features another wireless card (not Ralink based).

[Bug 67126] Re: events/0 uses all of cpu, causes big slowdown

2007-07-09 Thread tuxo
I have the same problem as of a few days ago (as of 8.7.2007). My laptop
is running Ubuntu Dapper and I have an external PCMCIA Belkin wirless
cards (Ralink rt2500). I can get wirless to work, but after a few
seconds spent on the internet, wirless stops working and the cpu load
goes up to 100%. Looking at the processes running, I see an events/0
process dominating the processor. I have never seen such a behavior
beforehand on this laptop, running for more than a year without changes
to the hardware. Unplugging the wirelsss card stops the events/0 process
from using 100% and everything is back to normal. When repluging the
wireless card the networks starts again, but using it for only a few
seconds brings up the events/0 process at 100% once more. These steps
can be repeated ad infinitum.

[Bug 99359] Re: planetpenguin-racer does not show text

2007-05-02 Thread tuxo
I can confirm that both planetpenguin-racer and stellarium feature
scrambled text. Graphics card: Radeon 8500 LE.

This bug seems to be a duplicate of bug #99158 (Text in (some) openGL
applications is scrambled).

[Bug 99359] Re: planetpenguin-racer does not show text

2007-04-24 Thread tuxo
I can confirm this bug as well. Today, I updated my machine from Edgy to
Feisty and instead of the text I see also only faint lines in ppracer.
The video card is an ATI Radeon 8500 LE running the open source driver
(ati).

[Bug 78037] Re: rt2500 in feisty: problem solution

Bug #99597 NetworkManager detects networks but does not connect
(RaLink 2500) seems to be a dublicate of this bug.

[Bug 78037] Re: rt2500 in feisty: problem solution

2007-04-02 Thread tuxo
I have been bitten by the Atheros wireless problems that appeared with
Dapper. Three computers of mine crashed constantly. After many months
passed by and the bug was still not fixed, I bought three new Ralink
cards because of the Free drivers. And now with the upcoming Feisty, the
wireless problems seem to resurface for me. I am really tired of this
situtation.

[Bug 34831] Re: Hardlock of entire system (Dapper Flight 5)

2007-02-14 Thread tuxo
I upgraded my computer to Edgy (where this bug has been fixed), so I
cannot test this anymore in Dapper. Question, has this bug also been
fixed in Dapper? It seems not as I find following alsa package via the
ubuntu package search facility (packages.ubuntu.com):

Source package alsa-driver
dapper (sound): 1.0.10-4ubuntu4
Binary packages: alsa-base, alsa-source, linux-sound-base

However, the fix provided by Daniel T Chen is contained in the version
alsa-driver_1.0.11-5ubuntu2.

I thought that the LTS in Dapper means Long Term Support?
