[Bug 1773859] Re: upgrades to 18.04 fail

2020-01-24 Thread unsound
I had this exact error when upgrading a 16.04 (amd64) with HWE (all
packages up-to-date) to 18.04 today. So I wouldn't say this is fixed.
Now trying to salvage it by moving the relevant file while the upgrade
is going on...

[Bug 1331047] [NEW] Unable to upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04

2014-06-17 Thread unsound
Public bug reported:

When attempting to upgrade from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04 I encounted the
issue described by the attachments. It is never able to calculate the
package setup for the resulting upgraded system and exits without
performing an upgrade.

the upgrade.

[Bug 1227076] [NEW] package grub-efi-amd64 2.00-7ubuntu11 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2013-09-18 Thread unsound
Public bug reported:

The package grub-efi-amd64 fails to configure itself. The root cause is
'update-grub', which fails with exit code 1.
However it only fails when my external drive is connected, a WD My Book 1130 (3
TB pure-4k drive, i.e. no 512 B sector emulation).

I researched further and found that it only fails when my OS X 10.9
(currently at Developer Preview 8) system partition (HFS+) is mounted.
If I unmount this HFS+ partition, update-grub finishes successfully.

Output with OS X Mavericks partition on pure 4k drive mounted:

drive is still connected):

There is an additional error message when the OS X 10.9 partition is unmounted:
'grub-probe: fel: okänt filsystem' (means: grub-probe: error: unknown

I don't know how to get more debug output from update-grub.

[Bug 1006427] Re: (PowerBookG4) Live image won't boot, stuck on stdin: Not a typewriter

2012-11-04 Thread unsound
I have the very same issue on the 20121017.5 live image, downloaded from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20121017.5 (MD5 sum was verified
after download).

My system is a PowerMac G5 Quad. So it doesn't appear to be specific to the
PowerBook G4's hardware.
After booting the console is slowly filled with the following messages:
---
unable to open '/dev/sdb'
stdin: not a typewriter
stdin: not a typewriter
unable to open '/dev/sdb'
stdin: not a typewriter
stdin: not a typewriter

---
There is no further progress... it just loops over and over again.
It appears that there is disk activity going on before each message is printed
to the console.

I noticed that the image that I downloaded is not available anymore on
cdimage.ubuntu.com. Now there's no powerpc image at all... Where can I
find an archive of images for the ports, so I can for example try out
the previous release (precise)?

I can verify that I cannot reproduce the problem in the version currently in
'proposed', 2.6.38-13.52.
So the bug appears to be fixed in this kernel version. Thanks.

[Bug 857170] [NEW] Kernel oops when mounting UDF volume

2011-09-23 Thread unsound
Public bug reported:

After installing kernel version 2.6.38-11-powerpc64-smp to my PowerMac
G5 Quad I noticed that upon logging in with a CD inserted, the system
would throw an error during login and while it doesn't seem like an
actual panic, the system was unusable after this error.

I investigated some more and realized that it was upon attempting to
mount the inserted CD (with UDF) that the error was thrown.

I can reproduce this error manually with the following recipe:
- Start the computer, boot Linux with kernel 2.6.38-11-powerpc64-smp.
- Skip graphical login and VT-switch to console one and log in.
- Attempt to mount /dev/hda (which the device assigned to the built-in DVD-RW)
as UDF as in the following example:
---
$ sudo mount -t udf /dev/hda mountpoint

[Bug 672873] Re: Installed GSettings schemas not detected on PowerPC

2010-12-29 Thread unsound
Well, it wasn't meant to be a final permanent solution anyway. I just wanted to
demontrate that the patch does fix the problem.
I was hoping that these changes could make it into an updated maverick package
without much delay.

I can update the package with a new version number to fix this problem,
if you think it's worth it. However, I think any effort should be
focused on publishing an official update with this patch applied. It's
almost three months overdue... how do we accelerate the process?

[Bug 672873] Re: Installed GSettings schemas not detected on PowerPC

2010-12-27 Thread unsound
For eveyone's convenience, I uploaded an 'endian-fixed' version of libglib to
my web site:
http://www.catacombae.org/glibfix-ppc/libglib2.0-0_2.26.0-0ubuntu1_powerpc.deb

I only applied the patch specific to endianness
(fe225e7e7c7424fbfbdeb63c41db63c21f8f7751) to produce this build.
However I think it would make a lot of sense to completely forward to
upstream version 2.26.1 as there are more fixes in there.

** Patch added: Patch that fixes the endianness issues in libglib 2.26.

[Bug 672873] Re: Installed GSettings schemas not detected on PowerPC

glib 2.26.1 fixes this issue as well (see release notes:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/glib/commit/?id=5ae9936f267f14c296182cbf1786d8a96f2c7f41
).

It would be great if we could get these changes into the Ubuntu maverick
package.

I think the specific commit in the 2.26 branch that fixes the big-endian issues
is this one:

[Bug 391224] Re: open-vm-tools should recommend open-vm-toolbox

2010-04-04 Thread unsound
This bugfix totally annoys me, because when I attempt to install open-
vm-tools on an Ubuntu Server machine with no X11, I suddently get the
entire X server and tons of libraries as dependencies. I have to turn of
automatic resolution of 'recommends' and sit and manually pick out which
recommends I need.

I disagree on the main point of this bug. If you choose to install open-
vm-tools, you do _not_ want the toolbox and all its GUI dependencies. I
think people can make this choice themselves.

Perhaps the sane thing to do would be to rename the packages like for
instance OpenJDK which has openjdk-jre-headless for when you don't run a
GUI system and don't want those dependencies, and openjdk-jre for the
common case where there is a GUI available. open-vm-tools-headless vs.
open-vm-tools (full GUI)?
