Try i8kutils 1.43 to see if it solves the problem.

Re: [Bug 1681942] Re: System hangs, when the fan is changing speed

2017-04-12 Thread vitorafsr
A freeze in changing fan speed is proper of some models of Dell notebooks
when a function call takes too much time in change fan speed. Up to now,
there is no solution to this problem.

[Bug 1349176] Re: i8kmon won't work on Dell Inspiron 7720 (causes lag)

2015-03-20 Thread vitorafsr
postadelmaga (postadelmaga),

it is going to be very clarifying if you can post the results of the
command ./probe_i8k_calls_time here.

It seems that changing fan speed in some models is a slow call under the
very basic call in i8k kernel module.

If so in your system, nothing can avoid the lag: the system will have to
change fan speed to control temp and the lag will appear, either using
i8kmon, sensors, sysfs whatever...

[Bug 1349176] Re: i8kmon won't work on Dell Inspiron 7720 (causes lag)

2014-12-22 Thread vitorafsr
I reopened this problem on Bug #1405003.

This bug number #1349176 was closed on released 1.42 as I considered
that some models would benefit from the improvements I made in the code
of i8kmon. But as some models still have the lag, the problem is not
solved.

2014-12-17 Thread vitorafsr
If the meaning of better is that the lag is sparser than before, I say
that it's the best where the software can reach, to the most of my
knowledge.

It is impossible to avoid the lag completely in some models as even
change fan speed is a slow call.

[Bug 1349176] Re: i8kmon won't work on Dell Inspiron 7720 (causes lag)

2014-12-07 Thread vitorafsr
i8kmon does not call, unnecessarily, i8k_set_fan() anymore. For sure, it
was one of the sources of the lag. But now it avoids that!

Perhaps, to somebody this bug is solved. We need some more tests here
from others models.

What is still present is querying temperature speed regularly but it
seems that, until now, this function is quicly enough in all Dell
systems.

As the freeze exist for setting fan speed, it is impossible to remove
it.

But at least now (with the last commit) i8kmon will only call
i8k_set_fan() when it needs change fan speed. This way, freeze will be
sparser.

Please try it as a preparation for release.

[Bug 1349176] Re: i8kmon won't work on Dell Inspiron 7720 (causes lag)

2014-12-03 Thread vitorafsr
In the last commit at lp:i8kutils I included a tool to measure the
time took by each function of i8kctl.

As the calls are the same as i8kmon's, we can identify which one is
slow, to properly correct this bug.

To compile and run, just checkout the last version, do a 'make', and
execute ./probe_i8k_calls_time.

Something like this must happen:

vitor:/tmp$ bzr branch lp:i8kutils
Branched 36 revisions.

vitor:/tmp$ cd i8kutils/
vitor:/tmp/i8kutils$ make
cc-c -o i8kctl.o i8kctl.c

Hello,

I think your kernel version have to have the module i8k. The error
ERROR: could not insert 'i8k' means the file i8k.ko does not exist.

Please, check if the file i8k.ko existe at
/lib/modules/3.13.0-39-generic/kernel/drivers/char/i8k.ko, or in any
other place. If not, the problem is that you does not have the module.

Yes, just write cat /proc/i8k, but first you need to load the kernel
module with the command sudo modprobe i8k.

[Bug 1349176] Re: i8kmon won't work on Dell Inspiron 7720 (causes lag)

2014-10-22 Thread vitorafsr
A freeze problem was solved at version 1.39. It was to be right at
version 1.41 for @marcelhb.

But there might be another problem as just a cat /proc/i8k causes a
freeze. The solution for 1.39 was at i8kmon and not in the kernel
module.

To isolate the problem, please see if the system freezes when just
changing fan state with i8kfan.

If the freeze is caused by the i8k kernel module, it is reproducible
issuing

   $ cat /proc/i8k

This information helps to find the cause of the problem.

[Bug 200449] Re: i8k fan speed values are wrong

2014-04-22 Thread vitorafsr
There is no solution to this bug at the moment as there is no doc that
describes how to interpret the values that the module 'i8k' reads.

There is the possibility of multiplying the result of 'i8k' reads by a
fixed value, but whether it will function or not is a guess. Some people
experience good results with this approach but the values might not be
correct. Perhaps they are acceptable.

To the available docs over the internet, I could not find any one that
is related to this subject about Dell hardware. If someone has any
guindance, please share.

So, now, I consider this bug as 'won't fix' for the moment.

But I'd like to add that, although the speed values are wrong, the
temperature values are totally right, and this package fulfill all
necessities of many Dell laptop models.

[Bug 1248254] Re: dependancy of i8kutils (tk version)

2013-11-07 Thread vitorafsr
Hi,

this seems your systems has tcl 8.5 installed, as default, but not tk
8.5, and 'i8kmon' complains about the inexistence of this required
package. Please install tk8.5, and that might solve. And also check for
the installation of tcl8.4 and tk8.4.

[Bug 1248254] Re: dependancy of i8kutils (tk version)

2013-11-07 Thread vitorafsr
For sure, one option is to change depency in package, but it will not
solve the problem globally. It was a solution for you, and that is ok.

The point is: in this specific case, tcl8.5 is in the system and is the
default tcl. And, i8kmon is executed by the default tcl. So, it asks for
the same tk version as tcl. And install tk8.5 is a solution to this
problem.

But if the version are updated in package (to 8.5), and there is a
system with tcl8.4 as default (or tcl8.6), the same problem will arise.

The problem here is a system with a tcl version without the tk
counterpart. This is the bug.

One possible solution is to require i8kmon to be executed directly by
the tcl/tk version of dependency.

[Bug 225442] Re: Dell XPS Gen 2 Laptop Fans running slow

2013-05-30 Thread vitorafsr
As some people could solve the problem running a python script, and what
the script does is to use 'i8kfan' regularly, I consider that i8kmon is
not properly configured. 'i8kmon' is a utility inside i8kutils.

What i8kmon is meant to do is what the script reported by someone do.

So, I'd like to ask for those who still have this problem to post here
if the system reboot while i8kmon is alive.
