Public bug reported:

After upgrade to 18.04 my ASUS X556U stopped switching touchpad
enabled/disabled by using Fn+F9. There is a post

[Bug 1635376] Re: double-clicking on an executable created with gcc6 opens an error message

2017-12-29 Thread yurad
I believe current bug report describes only a particular case of this Nautilus
bug. As I noticed Nautilus just doesn't detect 64 bit binaries as programs.
Just boot (live session) 32 bit Ubuntu, go with Nautilus to /usr/bin . All 32
bit binaries are detected as executable binaries. Nautilus is using the program
icon for all 32 binaries, and double click on any binary will start this
program.
Now do the same with Ubuntu 64. Go to /usr/bin . All binaries are detected as
"shared library" files. Nautilus is using a generic icon for all 64 bit
binaries, and double click on any brings the above message:
Could not display "...program name...". There is no application installed for
"shared library" files. Do you want to search for an application to open this
file?
Ironically 32 bit binaries are detected as executable binaries even in 64 bit
Ubuntu. Nautilus is using program icons, and double click would start the
program ( if only we have 32 bit libraries, used in this program).
I didn't try to check sources, it could be something very simple. This problem
is also in Nautilus fork, Nemo. Nemo behaves in the same way: 32 bit binaries
are detected as executable binaries, when 64 bit are not. Nemo gives another
message:
A Unknown file type
The file "..program name..." has no known programs associated with it. If you
trust the source of this file, and have sufficient permissions, you can mark it
executable and launch it. Or, you can use the OpenWith dialog to pick a program
to associate it with.
So, Nemo behaves way better, we can run the program, just after this message
click the button "Make executable and run". But anyway Nemo has the same
Nautilus bug by not detecting 64 binaries. .
Of course, Dolphin doesn't have anything of this kind.
I am planning to test Nautilus on another 64 Linux distributions and I will
create another bug report, making it more generic.

There is a nouveau bug, when nouveau preventing shutdown after suspend-resume.
I found another report regarding this bug:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99889 , but I want to report to
Ubuntu.
I am getting error messages like this one:
"nouveau :01:00.0: Xorg[1039]: failed to idle channel 3[Xorg[1039]"
I cannot shutdown and have to turn off without shutdown that is unsafe. (The
proprietary NVIDIA driver is even worse. I cannot resume after suspend)

[Bug 1734595] Re: package sysstat 11.5.7-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2017-11-29 Thread yurad
My login problem is resolved.
I have four items in desktop environment selector:
Ubuntu
Ubunto on Xorg
Ubunto on Xorg (visually the same item appears two times)
Unity
The default was one of Ubuntu on Xorgs. I switched to Unity and it works! Thank
you so much.

Regarding sysstat, I did the following:
sudo apt update
"Reading state information... Done
3 packages can be upgraded. Run 'apt list --upgradable' to see them."
apt list --upgradable
"Listing... Done
firefox/artful-updates,artful-security 57.0+build4-0ubuntu0.17.10.6 amd64
[upgradable from: 57.0+build4-0ubuntu0.17.10.5]
firefox-locale-en/artful-updates,artful-security 57.0+build4-0ubuntu0.17.10.6

libxml-libxml-perl/artful-updates,artful-security 2.0128+dfsg-3ubuntu0.1 amd64
[upgradable from: 2.0128+dfsg-3]"
sudo apt -f install
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to
correct the problem.
sudo dpkg --configure -a
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded. (The same 3 as
above)
sudo apt -f install
I believe everything should be good.

Re: [Bug 316976] Re: LiveCD and the issue displaying time and date

2010-09-29 Thread yurad
Hello Clint,
Also I took time for me! My previous persistent USB drive was corrupted.
(BTW, 3 time my persistent USB was corrupted after I installed different
packages. :) )
finally I created another Live USB drive.
There is the version :
You are using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
- the Lucid Lynx - released in April 2010 and supported until April 2013.
There are 2 screen shots:
first is before I connected to internet, second is after. You might see, the
time was just jumped ahead from 17 PM to 21 PM without any notification.

Please, let me know if you need anything else.

  Thanks,
Yury.

Status in “casper” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
I think this issue is not new at all. I found many discussions related to
it. However, I want to put down my notes. I am particularly interested in
using Ubuntu/Kubuntu as Live CD Linux. All desktop managers, Gnome, KDE and
others, have nice panel clock. Ubuntu/Kubuntu is not very consistent
displaying the time on the panel clocks. The time that I see depends on
whether computer is connected to the Internet or not.
Case 1: My computer is connected to the Internet.
Let's say I boot at 11:00 AM. The panel clock displays 16:00 and the
 system time is set like:
 ubu...@ubuntu:~$ date
 Tue Jan 6 16:00:00 UTC 2009
It's clear what happened. I am in EST time zone. Ubuntu detected my time
zone and set correct UTC time 11:00 + 5 hours = 16:00. But my question is
after Ubuntu detected my time zone , why UTC time is set as the default time
zone and not currently detected real time zone, EST in my case? I am in
live session, that's not the installation process.
Case 2: my computer is not connected to the Web. The behavior is just
 weird!
Again, I boot at 11:00 AM. I see the correct BIOS time on the panel clock,
11:00. That sounds good and that I what to see on my panel: my real local
 time.
The system date is set to :
  ubu...@ubuntu:~$ date
 Tue Jan 6 11:00:00 UTC 2009
but I don't pay attention that the time zone is UTC until I connect to the
Web. Than my panel clock jumps forward and displays 16 hours insted of 11
 hours! The system time becomes:
  ubu...@ubuntu:~$ date
 Tue Jan 6 16:01:00 UTC 2009
Basically it is all the same as in the first case. Just in the first case
all settings were done in background during the boot and here all is done in
foreground with this weird jump of time .

I compared with Knoppix. Regardless whether the computer is connected or
not Knoppix displays the correct time on the panels and the system time is
 set as :
 knop...@0[knoppix]$ date
 Tue Jan 6 11:05:40 EST 2009
 knop...@0[knoppix]$ date -R
 Tue, 06 Jan 2009 11:05:44 -0500
 knop...@0[knoppix]$
BTW, I don't know how Knoppix detects the time zone when it is off line,
but for end-users prospective it is more important that the panel clock
displays correct time and date and not the time and date of London.

[Bug 220204] Re: in nm-applet enter doesn't connect in some security modes

2009-02-10 Thread yurad
In my report Bug 311448 I mention the following:

Ubuntu 8.04 provides in wireless connection settings the following choices for
WEP key:
WEP 128 bit passphrase
WEP 64/128 bit Hex
WEP 64/128 bit ASCII
However, Ubuntu 8.10 doesn't have ASCII choice, just Hex and Passphrase. I
don't know the difference between passphrase and ASCII and I am not very
interested in it. When I shifted from 8.04 to 8.10 I had real headache to
connect to the wireless access point. Finally I used 8.04 to find the
appropriate hexadecimal value for the known ASCII key and than I connected in
8.10 using this hexadecimal value. That's not very straightforward solution. :)

Than Chris Crisafulli marked it as the duplicate as the current bug.
