@Steve - Thankyou for the 'nomodeset' option, this works well @Guido - I appreciate what you are saying, however as an end user. This 'bug in the MSI bios' does not seem to be a problem on XP, Vista, Windows 7, or for that matter Ubuntu 9.04. Therefore, as an end user, when I install Ubuntu 9.10 and the problem occurs, whether it is a 'bug in the MSI bios' or not, the perception is that it is a problem with 9.10, and it seems hard to convince someone that it is not, when it works fine with the othe o/s's. -- brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415023 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase-workspace in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 415023] Re: brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100
My 'workaround' is to set the brightness level in 'System-Preferences-Power Management' to '0 %'. I also have turned off all options in there for Dimming the display or reducing brightness. This stops the flashing at startup, or when coming out of suspend. Then add the 'brightness applet' to the panel, and adjust the brightness level with this. If you use the brightness applet to adjust the brightness level, it does not do the flashing thing. However. I don't really think that this 'workaround' is an acceptable solution for the average user. If an average user installs the system and it starts flashing crazily at them, that is a bad impression, and not one that encourages them to keep using the operating system. -- brightness is broken on MSI WIND U100 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415023 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase-workspace in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 451152] [NEW] Copy and paste of XP remote desktop files on XP machine cause local Ubuntu to lock
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rdesktop OK, this is a little weird, so bear with me (was also doing my head in as to what was happening). If I rdesktop into an XP machine (currently using Gnome-RDP to set up, but am pretty sure that it does not matter), and have Explorer open on the remote XP machine, then highlight a few large files (avi in this case) and use the command to cut (or copy) them from one folder on the remote XP machine to another folder on the remote XP machine, the local Ubuntu machine comes to a standstill. After a while my fan on the Ubuntu notebook starts running flat out, and I get some very limited response (i.e. things work but very slow). I can open a terminal window and type 'top' and see that Nautilus is using most of the CPU (i.e. anywhere between say 70 and 95%). This is interesting, as Nautilus is not even running (on the screen - if you know what I mean). I can run a sudo kill PID (whatever the pid for Nautilus is) and usually system response comes right back and the fan quietens down. Sometimes it then opens another Nautilus instance that is equally as greedy for the CPU time an I have to kill it as well. [Bug 447764] [NEW] MSI Wind U100 - brightness adjustment problem
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pm-utils On the MSI Wind U100, if brightness is adjusted with either the brightness function keys or Ubuntu itself it gets itself stuck in a continuous loop whereby the brightness applet(? - the pop up window) stays continuously on the screen, and the brightness level toggles between the current setting and the next brightness setting up (e.g. say 10% and 20% or 50% and 60% etc). This also results in the brightness of the screen actually continuously changing as well, making it very difficult to use. This also occurs at startup, so from boot time onwards the brightness of the backlight for the screen is flashing constantly. A work around at the moment, is to set the brightness level in the System-Preferences-Power Management to the lowest level. This stops the screen from flashing continuously (unless you try and adjust the screen brightness). Thankfully the lowest level on the Wind is quite usable in most lighting conditions. [Bug 446175] [NEW] MSI Wind U100 Suspend - hibernate not working
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pm-utils Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) Have tried fresh install. MSI Wind (U100) both suspend and hibernate do nothing other than disconnect wifi for approx 30 seconds. (then it automatically reconnects) On 9.04 both work perfectly on the same machine.
