Seeing 'timidity' in the data collected by apport I have just
uninstalled timidity. This has immediately restored the availability of
the sound output. Also after rebooting, sound output is working again (I
have since rebooted twice).

I had thought that appending
options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0
to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
had fixed the problem. But the problem has since reappeared.
