how to know if this setup is using a custom gcrypt for HW acceleration? Or
because of the kernel?
A quick check of the test history for this ibm-gt kernel:
4.15.0-1053.59 - this test was not tested

Correction for comment #1, this CANNOT be reproduced in Bionic 4.15 P8.
This is only affecting B-4.15-ibm-gt.
Looks like the qemu-img command has failed here:
