[Bug 1885452] Re: pc freezes and crashes during accountsservice upgrade on fresh ubuntu focal fossa install
As I recall, in the many ubuntu installations I did, it was one where I put accountsservice on hold and then upgraded the system. Then, I run an apt-get upgrade instead of apt, or something similar, so the hold was not taken account of. I was afraid the PC would crash, but it did not, it however did freeze the computer a little bit, which still does not seem normal. The nvidia drivers had been installed previously. The two bugs you mentioned are clearly related or probably duplicate and, I may assume, they have yet to be properly fixed. Please let me know if I can help you further. Perhaps I could try to replicate the weird freezes (without crashed) that happen when accountsservice is being upgraded as: -I first install LightDM, activate it and then sudo apt upgrade, or -hold accountsservice, sudo apt upgrade all system, then unhold and sudo apt upgrade again Maybe a solution could lie at the journalctl of these two situations? If you think it is worth it, please tell me about nvidia drivers, should they be installed or not, or should I just use my laptop which has no nvidia on it? Indeed, this seems like a bug that can be avoided with a little experience, but a new or inexperienced ubuntu user could find it all too annoying and disrupting. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1885452 Title: pc freezes and crashes during accountsservice upgrade on fresh ubuntu focal fossa install To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/1885452/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1885452] Re: pc freezes and crashes during accountsservice upgrade on fresh ubuntu focal fossa install
As I mentioned, I think the problem is not related to nvidia drivers. If I install nvidia drivers I have to do it by first disabling automatic log in at startup, otherwise I get a login loop after first reboot. If I disable automatic log in, then I do not get any crash when upgrading accountsservice. To sum up, accountsservice upgrade crashes only on 'GDM + login automatically'. On 'LightDM + login automatically', it stalls a bit but does not crash, while on 'GDM + disabled automatic login' it works perfectly. I installed ubuntu on an older laptop with no nvidia cards and the same problem appeared, otherwise I would not have reported this issue as it would have probably been related to a particular configuration, of my PC. Please let me know if you think I can try something else. [Bug 1885452] Re: pc freezes and crashes during accountsservice upgrade on fresh ubuntu focal fossa install
I just reinstalled focal ubuntu with "log in automatically" checked and I recorded the journalctl and timed the error at approximately 14:31:54. I am attaching the log. [Bug 1885452] Re: pc freezes and crashes during accountsservice upgrade on fresh ubuntu focal fossa install
The newest log has errors as you said at 14:54:52 and the last line of the log, probably when I saved it, reads 14:55:22. This means that between the time of errors and time of log saving 30 seconds passed, which seems correct as it is the amount of time it has taken me to ctrl- alt-f3, enter credentials and run command. I think it is fair to assume the errors that appeared at 14:54:52 are the ones that concern this bug. Please let me know if my line of reasoning seems correct. The errors indeed are related to gdm so they must be somehow linked to the crash.

Sorry for numerous messages, but I just did other things. First, I found that checking at install "request password at logins", I was able to also install Nvidia Drivers without any issue at all! This change basically solved all the problems. When installing Ubuntu focal and checking "log in automatically" a login loop was present after nvidia drivers got installed. LightDM fixed this as it disables automatic login. Second, I run another journalctl report, this time instantaneously at crash. Ctrl-alt-F worked by pressing it instantaneously. Hopefully this may help. I noticed users on askubuntu complaining about login loops after nvidia drivers install, but have not seen as a solution just to enable password request at login screen. LightDM partly solves the situations, but as I mentioned, when LightDM and automatic log in are activated and accountsservice is being upgraded, the screen still flickers weirdly. ** Attachment added: "instantjournal.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/+bug/1885452/+attachment/5388452/+files/instantjournal.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1885452 Title: pc freezes and crashes during accountsservice upgrade on fresh ubuntu focal fossa install To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/+bug/1885452/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1885452] Re: pc freezes and crashes during accountsservice upgrade on fresh ubuntu focal fossa install
I forgot to mention that, after the "Oh no! Something has gone wrong" I also get, in fact, logged out automatically and sent to login screen and after I login the "Oh no! Something has gone wrong" appears again. After pressing ctrl-alt-f3 and ctrl-alt-f2 repeatedly, the desktop appears eventually. However, I found another interesting fix! I reinstalled ubuntu and checked: "ask for password every time I sign in" and not as I previously selected, which was "log in automatically". I could sudo apt upgrade with no problem, on default GDM, no freezes, crash stalls etc. As I previously mentioned, using LightDM is also a fix. By installing and activating it before anything else, sudo apt upgrade runs well, but, I noticed that when accountsservice is getting set up (on GDM it is the point when computer crashes) the computer still freezes and flickers about 2-3 seconds, but no crash. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1885452 Title: pc freezes and crashes during accountsservice upgrade on fresh ubuntu focal fossa install To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/+bug/1885452/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Unfortunately, after the crash occurs and the 'something went wrong' screen appears I cannot enter the VT. ctrl-alt-F3 makes the screen go black and ctrl-alt-f2 reverts is to the 'something went wrong'.
