This seems to be the same problem we are having on real hardware, in my case the Dell Latitude D630. I get the issue on Ubuntu 8.04 AMD64 Desktop Beta 1. The first issue, in your case, is not detecting the QEMU graphics card/monitor. But the issue that stops you from continuing is the low- graphics dialog, which is reported in case #194187. Is the issue that you wish to report, about not detecting the hardware, or not being able to boot after the log-graphics dialog.
