Adding the suggested bits to xorg.conf certainly cures the choppy playback, but I still get a crash upon exiting the recordings menu after watching a recording. Yesterday, the app didn't shut down porperly again, so I had to kill it again. But today it shut down well, but I guess this is due to the update of the kernel and the fglrx-modules from today. The crash seems to be related to the fglrx drivers. I tried using mythfrontend (remote) using the ati driver and everythings working fine. Then switched back to fglrx and mythfrontend will not shut down properly. I think this will be another bug, but with fglrx the sound of of tv is shoppy and video is not playing on after a few seconds.
